Immortal Dragon #1

The Dragon's Psychic

Rate this book
New from USA TODAY bestselling author Linzi Baxter, the first book in her exciting new paranormal romance series.

She was supposed to be just a job. A paycheck. Now she’s his destiny.

Talia hadn’t planned on dying today. But accidentally defying the Supernatural Council isn’t exactly a wise life plan. When she did her duty and touched a bloody knife to determine guilt or innocence, her vision seemed…off. So was Councilman Gideon’s rush to declare a shivering child guilty of murder.

Now Talia’s trying to lose herself in the West Virginia mountains with the child in tow. And the mercenary on their tail has an uncanny ability to find them, no matter how far they run.

Kirin’s dragon-shifter senses make him the most sought-after bounty hunter in these parts. But something about this job smells…wrong. And when he finally gets his hands on the fugitive, he gets the surprise of his nearly three-hundred-year life. The fragile, determined woman in his arms is the mate he’d given up all hope of finding.

Now instead of breathing down her neck, he’s bound to protect her at all costs. But if they can’t figure out who wants this child dead—and why—they could all wind up sharing the same grave.

Note: The Dragon’s Psychic is the first of a three-book series. Each book will have a complete HEA romance, connected with a continuing plot that will conclude with book 3.

This was my first book by Linzi Baxter but it certainly won't be the last.
This book pulled me in from the very start, and didn't let up. I still feel like I want more, and I was disappointed to get to the end!
Action packed, dramatic and steamy.
I genuinely couldn't get enough.

This is the first time that I have ever read or heard of Linzi Baxter. When you are reading or listening to a new author you have no idea what you're going to get in to. On like bigger name authors, or authors that have a strong social media presence the indie authors are a wild card. For me the indie authors are the ones that I am most intrested in, only because they tend to be hidden gems. Linzi is just that.

Kirin and Talia are a great pair. Their whole entire first encounter was cute. Kirin was just trying to find Talia and Alida but she just refuses to be found. When he does catch up to them little does he know what he is in store for. Not only does he find his mate but he also realizes that there is more to Alida then he was originally told.

Someone is doing some shady things at The Council and is setting up people to take the fall. I don't know what's going on there but it seems as though people are being killed left and right and people are being kidnapped as well. I am really interested to see where Linzi takes this series because there are a lot of loose ends but also this book was complete. I am just trying to figure out who the shadow person is and why he decided to kill.

I enjoyed the two narrators as well. This is the first time that I've ever listened to them. I have to say that I enjoyed it tremendously. I hope that they continue the series and that we get a book two soon in audiobook format because that format brings the characters to life.

Paranormal Romance & Suspense fans, this is the book for you. I'll be honest, I've never been big on the dragon shifter books. Well this book changed my mind! This book was really cool. It probably has to do with the story as well. Kirin is a bounty hunter who never thought or cared what happened to the people he collected. He just cared about the pay. That was until he found Talia. She is on the run with a special child. Suddenly he questions all the orders he was ever given. And for the first time, he goes against orders to help keep them safe. As if that wasn't a big enough surprise for him, falling in love with Talia blew him away too. Talia has always helped the supernatural council when they needed her without question. She is a psychic. But this time, she questions them and puts herself in danger. She is on the run with a dragon shifter and a child with special powers. She can't explain the need to protect the child and the attraction to Kirin. But they are in it deep fighting for justice and their lives. This was such a cool story and I love that it's a series. These narrators were Talia & Kirin! Their voices were what I would hear as a reader. This is a fast paced paranormal romance with tons of action and suspense. I'm excited it's a series. I will definitely be continuing on!

Interesting world building and characters. The love story is a fated mates one so everything arrives super quickly and the couple has no time to learn to know each other. The little girl is intriguing and her powers seem infinite.
The end felt rushed: I suspected there would be no ending concerning the bad guy as the story goes on in the rest of the series, but the heroine's problem was solved with a show of hands of the council members and a veiled threat of the bad guy. Very frustrating.

Good news is I already purchased volume 2. Bad news is volume 3 has not been published yet.

This was what it was. I didn't find anything especially impressive about it, but I also didn't think it a bad version of a basic dragon shifter-find-his-mate story. I liked the characters and thought the inclusion of a child interesting. However, I also thought the child got over losing her parents too easily and the conclusion was too swift (rushed). The narrators did a fine job and I'd be willing to both read another Baxter book and listen to another of Costa and Kafer's readings.

Audiobook review: The Dragon’s Psychic was a nice mystery romance story involving a young girl accused of murder and a psychic’s desperate need to make sure the right person his held responsible. The characters are likable and believable and the storyline is interesting and entertaining. There are a few intimate scenes but nothing to explicit. The narrator did a great job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene. Talia has been summoned by the Supernatural Council. Since they found out she had visions of events when she touched an object and could help them solve cases, they called her at least once a month. But the visions were tough on her, making her experience the pain and emotions caused by the violent act. It drained her energy and she couldn’t forget the bad ones which gave her nightmares. This time, she felt very uncomfortable and her mind turned to the criminals she heard they kept in their labs in the basement to experiment on. She felt that if she walked into the building today, her life would change.

In the interrogation room, Talia saw an 8-year-old little girl, Alida, with blood on her hands, tears running down her face and a blank look in her eyes. Nearby was a bloody serrated kitchen knife. They said she murdered her parents who were Council members. It made no sense that a little girl could overpower her parents who had powers of their own! Kael, who let her into the room, tried to not answer any of her obvious questions. The room was freezing inside to the point that Talia saw her own breath fog out when she whispered a bad word at the scowling man.

Talia touched the knife, but this time, the vision was blurry. She saw Alida standing there, felt her enormous powers, and the child looked right at her and said, “I didn’t do it.” That had never happened before. She knew the girl didn’t murder her parents and, as she looked to the side, she saw a black figure just as she was forcefully pulled out of the vision and back to the interrogation room. The enforcer, Arrow, had taken the knife from her hand. They told her the girl had no powers. She reached for the knife again but Arrow moved away and an angry Gideon came into the room, demanding to talk to her. She was afraid they would send her to the labs or kill her outright.

Touching the girl to comfort her, they both disappeared and were relocated elsewhere! Kirin, a dragon and expert tracker, was brought in to find them. He had been having dreams about a woman calling for him, needing his help, and his dragon went wild trying to get to her. Talia also knew something was wrong with the Council, as someone was manipulating things to get at the child. Who or for what reason, she didn’t know. But her adventure had just begun and would indeed change her life! Would she and Alida survive? Would the person responsible for the murder and corruption be discovered?

This was an awesome book that I thoroughly enjoyed! The story line started the reader’s tension as we heard about the Council and Talia’s discomfort this time. Things were not as they seemed and someone was interfering with the truth. The characters were depicted very well, and we meet a few of Kirin’s family members along the way. The mystery of Alida’s powers and why she was being targeted keeps the story intriguing for the reader as it races along! Don’t miss the start of what looks to be an incredibly good series!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review. As I’ve said before, I always give honest reviews whether people appreciate them or not.

This is the first book in the Immortal Dragon Series from Linzi Baxter. So while the beginning is also somewhat ‘Universe’ building, it’s non-stop all the way. The story begins with Talia who had been called to an investigation at the Supernatural Council’s headquarters for her region in West Virginia. Talia is a psychic, not the kind that read tarot cards, but the kind that can ‘read’ objects. For instance, if she touches an object that was used by an old grandmother to make cookies, then that’s what she reads. In this case, she was asked to read a knife allegedly used for a murder. The alleged murderer? An eight year old girl. The murder victims? The girl’s parents. And no, this is not some twisted true crime story with a movie on Lifetime. Gah! Gideon is the high council person that called her in. He is a man that doesn’t play any games. Everyone seems to be afraid of him in one way or another. The council member we meet in the beginning is Kael, a very powerful man, also somewhat fearsome.

Talia knows the girl, Alida, didn’t commit the crime. She is, however, terrified of Gideon since he swears she did kill them. At what seems like the very last second, Alida grabs her and they teleport somewhere! This of course, freaks out the two council members that were there so Gideon calls in his best mercenary hunter to go after them. Kirin is said hunter. He’s a dragon shifter, the oldest of three brothers. Kia is the middle brother and Conley the youngest, and they are all waiting for Kirin to show up to celebrate Conley’s birthday. Obviously Kirin’s going to be late.

Talia and Alida were in, they were out, they were scared and they were safe but not at the same time. Regardless of other mercenaries coming after them, once they convince Kirin that they are innocent, it becomes a race to safety and to prove to the full council that they are innocent. All the dragons fall in love with Alida, who turns out to be a really incredible little girl. Kirin and Talia also seem to be connected, and it’s a great relationship they start with! I SO want to know who killed Alida’s parents. Ms. Baxter made both Gideon and Kael seem a bit evil and smarmy. I have never read anything from Ms. Baxter, but with this book being the first, I can’t wait to read more! I enjoyed this book tremendously, and want to read the rest of the series!

A New Dragon Series!

Great characters and world building. For a first in series book, the balance of new info to story was excellent. There is a lot of action, a little steam, a few laughs, and even a tear or two. The main characters get a HEA/HFN ending as this has an over arcing theme that will carry through for the next two books. This is a trilogy, but I could see room to add more stories after this set is complete. 🤞

This is a shifter story so there is insta-love and mate claiming, but it all just works. There is some violence and memories of violence, as that is part of the heroine’s main gift.

This is my first time with author Linzi Baxter. She has put her own spin on this new shifter series and her characters will pull you in from the start. I’m excited to listen to more. Hopefully the rest of this series will make it to audio soon!

This story is performed in dual POV of the two main characters Talia and Kirin. Heather Costa is new to me but I feel she did a good job, especially being paired with veteran, Jeffrey Kafer. If you listen to a lot of Sci-Fi & Fantasy like I do, Jeffrey should not be be a new narrator to you. As always, he is excellent.

I find that by adjusting the playback speed greatly improves the production. Heather played best at 0.95x and Jeffrey at 0.90x speeds. I ultimately settled for 0.90x as constant adjustments proves taxing.

Obtained at my request and I am voluntarily leaving this unbiased review.

This story has a lot of really good world-building, there are certainly some questions left open, but I leave that to this being the first book in the series and expect that subsequent books will help to fill-in any of the blanks. Although the romance is very quick (insta-love/fated-mates) it ended up working well within the plot. Talia knows something is off on the case the council has called you in to consult, she knows the young girl isn't a murderer, but she isn't sure who to trust to help her prove it. Kirin has been focused on increasing is hoard, on just completing his missions for the council and getting paid. Only together can they figure out what is going on with the council and who wants to target this young girl they need to protect. I thought the chemistry was great between Talia and Kirin, for all that it's a quick romance, I think the drama helped add some dimension to it. I also liked pacing for the plot, a good bit of twists in the story to keep it moving and interesting but still easy enough to follow. There are a few plot points that will be continued in the future books, but still a complete story in this book.

I'm looking forward to seeing Kirin's brothers find their mates. I think those boys are going to fall hard and fast, and it should be quite the adventure.

This was a dollar deal on Amazon. An odd thing - on Amazon they list 2 authors for this book. Here on Goodreads one. I'm wondering if they gave LB's editor credit for half of this? This is another USA Today bestselling author. Whatever...

So, this story had some good ideas. It's too bad the author is so bad at writing. Dialogue is clunky. People don't talk like that. The author uses contractions sometimes, but then doesn't. Sometimes in the same sentence.
An 8 year old talks like an adult. She loses both parents & is accused of killing them, but gets over it quickly. The H/h mate & fall in love within hours & fall in bed for some hot sex. The villain is 2 dimensional & we never get why after 1000 years of living he goes off the rails.
This book also doesn't resolve this at the end. So, this will be an ongoing theme throughout this series I'm guessing. Resolve the immediate conflict, but keep the underlying one going to milk more books out of it. In a talented author, such as Nalini Singh, Patricia Biggs or Ilona Andrews, this would be entertaining. With this author, I'm done.

I have read Linzi's romantic thriller books but this is a first for me with paranormal for her but I have to say she knocked it out of the park and I will admit I only requested the book because it carried her name and now I am desperate for the rest of the books in the series

Kirin is a dragon shifter and the most sought after assassin around so when he is employed to terminate a child he thinks nothing of it Until he meets her and the woman that has gone on the run with her. Talia knew somethig was wrong when she touched the murder weapon and things didn't seem right so now she is on the run from the council with a child accused of murder and why can't they lose the dragon mercenary chasing them it is like he has radar where they are concerned. When Kirin finally catches up with them he realises why he has had no trouble finding them Talia is his mate and he is sworn to protect her Why does someone want this child dead what is her secret and will they be able to solve it before they all are killed. Will they survive and will they form a family You will have to read to see

Your standard fated mates shifter story. Nothing that makes it stand out. We have the big badass dragon who is immortal and can’t be killed by regular means but a bunch of shifters with magic to block his shift are able to kick his ass. We have the good girl who is psychic and part of the supernatural world but has no idea how shifters and mates work. We have a little girl with a boatload of powers who knows it all and nothing fazes her. We have the bad guy who is this powerful council head and no one does anything about him. There is no mystery. We know who the bad guy is. The whole story is around proving the little girl is innocent, not taking the bad guy down. Lots of people say the story resolved too quickly but I think the plot extend over the next books in the series so this is not an issue for me. It’s just too cliché for my liking.
Another thing I don’t understand is the MC brother’s name change. In this book his name is Kia and in the next one is Kai. There’s no explanation for it and I didn’t see any review pointing this out.

When, you can't run anylonger, turn around and say HI! Talia, psychic can read objects. When asked to read a knife by the Supernational Council allegedly used by an 8 year old girl, Alida to kill her parents, she could not ascertain the girl was guilty, but she felt something was wrong with the story and with the Council who she felt was manipulating the situation. When she touched the girl in comfort, she found herself translocated. Kirin, dragon bounty hounter who gets results hunting is brought in to find Talia. He had been having dreams of a woman calling out to him. Coincidence? Can Talia protect Alida and find the truth? Will Kirin find Talia? Is she the woman in his dreams? Is that prophetic? Does Alida have powers? Can Talia solve the mystery of the Council? Good story. Keeps you stuck to your kindle. Literally! You won't be able to put it down to do anything! Nicely done. This is my first book by this author and I it won't be the last. Talia is a psychic (by touch) for The Council overseeing supernaturals. Kirin is the best there is when it comes to bringing fugitive supernaturals to justice. Both are a bit jaded about their jobs with the Council but never question it. Until Gideon, the head of the region, insists an 8-yr old child murdered her parents and wants Talia to say that's what the knife showed her. When she refuses, she becomes a fugitive with the child. Now Kirin is called in to collect them both. There were parts in this book that I was holding my breath and parts that made me just laugh. Alida, the 8-yr old, was so mature and brave for being so young. One of my favorite parts is when Kirin's brother complains about not having any foil to protect his thoughts. This was a winner for me all the way. I requested an advanced reader copy from Booksprout and am under no obligation to leave this review.

The Dragons Psychic is a whirlwind of unexpected activities and surprising events catapults those stormy emotions, coiling tightly, bursting to life brilliantly. Drama, adversity and suspense engage all of your senses while a plethora of twists and turns run rampant. One exhilarating storyline and gripping plot propels this bad boy to life flawlessly. Struggling through all the trials and tribulations along with a few bumps and bruises sending this bad boy skyrocketing. The characters are authentic, relatable and realistic with such depth and individuality it feels as though you can just reach out and touch them. loved it

Loved this story. It was fast paced with a lot of action. Talia and Kirin are both paranormals that work for the council that oversees supernaturals, they do their jobs, no questions asked. But when Talia is called in to help with a case involving an 8yr old girl suspected of murdering her parents she knows everything is way off, even her vision of the murder has somehow been tampered with. When Kirin is called in to apprehend Talia and Alida after they escape custody he also sees nothing but inconsistencies in the case. He is determined to bring them in, But when he meets Talia face to face his loyalties quickly and permanently switch when he discovered she is his mate. Together they work to clear Alida’s name and keep the extraordinarily gifted little girl safe.

This is the first pnr book that I have read from Linzi, although I have read the Hacker series and enjoyed them immensely. This one did not disappoint. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay up past 2 am to finish it, but I read it to the end this morning!
There is a villain who seems to be up to no good and he will probably unravel in future books. He sends a dragon shifter mercenary to capture a psychic and an eight year old girl accused of murdering her parents, whose powers keep growing. He joins them on the run when things just don’t feel right. Well written and kept my attention from the first page. Minimum of actual violence and some steamy stuff. Very enjoyable read!

Alina, the girl with mysterious power is being targeted for killing her parents. The story is intriguing and kept me turning pages.
Talia, she has visions from the future and from the past. Lately the story from the past bringing discomfort and pain.
Things were not as they seemed and someone was interfering with the truth. She had to run and protect child.
Kirin, the Dragon knows that this woman needs his help, but doesn’t know why. When finally he get her is more surprise than before. Talia is his Mate.

Talia can read objects when she touches them and she’s asked by the supernatural council to read a knife that was involved in a murder, the murderer an 8 year old girl who is accused of killing her parents but Talia knows that the girl didn’t do it but Gideon who is on the council says that she is guilty and it scares Talia so she takes the girl Alida and ends up on the run with her. The council sends a mercenary dragon Kirin and when he catches up with Talia and the girl he knows that she is innocent and Talia is his mate. Kirin knows that the council is corrupt and it’s up to the 3 of them to find the rotten core in the council and find proof. Fantastic story I loved it and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

As I'm headed for a book convention this weekend, I've been trying to read a few works by other unknown-to-me authors that I'll have a chance to meet. The synopsis for The Dragon's Psychic looked interesting, and as I'm always in for a good dragon shifter story, I dived in.

Aside from the fact that the book does need a good proofreading, I did enjoy it, but wanted more of, well... everything. Everything was instant - insta-action, insta-love, insta-family - but seeing as how these characters were actually rather interesting on the page, I would have liked to have seen a bit more developed from it all.

While the main conflict of the book was quickly tied up at the end, it's obviously part of a much larger puzzle, and I'm curious to see how that all unfolds.

A fantastic story to start what I hope is going to be a long and brilliant series. A lonely dragon ( who doesn't really know he is lonely yet ) a psychic who wants to know the truth and the cutest and possibly most powerful child ever. Add in a despot, some rebellious wolves and a suspicious dragon brother and you get an explosive story line that will keep you reading from start to finish and still wanting more ( PLEASE ) Don't miss this one or you will regret it

A new paranormal romance with a dragon shifter hunter and the psychic human he discovers is his long awaited mate. Kirin was hired to retrieve Talia, the council psychic, and the eight year old girl Alida who is wanted for murdering her parents. But things are not what they seem. So Kirin and Talia along with Kirin's two sexy younger brothers and a few more trusted friends and family, are scrambling to prove Alida's innocence. Great storytelling and an entertaining story with some cute family bonding moments and some steamy dragon shifter loving. Nice!

A great book to start a new series with strong characters in Talia , a psychic and Kirin , a dragon shifter and Alida , the innocent little girl accused of killing her parents. The author does a great job building the story and pulling you in with her descriptive writing. Her scenes are described in vivid detail and the story flows fluidly. The supporting characters play a huge part in bringing the story around and you get to meet his brothers and get a peek into their lives. I'm looking forward to reading their stories.

The Dragon’s Psychic by Linzi Baxter is the first book in the Immortal Dragon series. This book begins with a mystery when psychic Talia is called in on a case for the supernatural council in the state of West Virginia. Once she discovers that a child is being wrongly accused of murder she and the child escape with a dragon named Kirin who is sent to capture them, hot on their heels. This story is full of suspense, mystery, magic, and romance. I loved the way the story and its characters developed. This was a very entertaining dragon mate tale that ended with a wonderful happy ever after ending. I loved it! The Dragon’s Psychic is a mysterious and surprising romance.

Well written fast paced story

This is an exciting intro, both to the series and the author, for me. I loved how the story jumped right in with tension and the mystery of the death of two supernatural people - and why their 8 year old daughter was being railroaded as the patsy. Things are obviously not as they seem and it was a wild ride getting it sorted out. Corruption, danger and drama abound while the sizzling chemistry between the two main characters sizzles into high heat. Loved all the side characters and I can't wait to see what comes next!
