War God's Mantle: Underworld

Rate this book
A Marine turned Greek God. An Army of Beautiful Amazons. One Final Battle against Death Itself.

Jacob Merely has secured the ultimate weapon against evil, the Crystal Scythe, and now it’s time for him to bring the fight to Hades himself.

Unfortunately, Earl Necro Earl and his undead forces stand in the way, so if Jacob is going to defeat the god of death, he’s going to have to take out Earl first. Knocking Earl’s teeth into the back of his throat? Yeah, Jacob is totally okay with that.

And when a mysterious new woman arrives unexpectedly at their gates with no memory of who she is—but seems to know of a secret passageway into the heart of the Temple of Hades—Jacob finally has the last piece of the puzzle. But with every new battle won, Jacob is tempted to give into the rage and arrogance that consumed Ares.

Can Jacob resist the temptation to become a total douchebag? Can he and his Amazons unravel the mystery behind the ancient Olympian War and finish a battle as old as time itself? And what new demons does Hades have to throw against the War God?

When Jacob Merely took on the mantle of the God of War, Ares, he never imagined the repercussions of his doing so. Granted, he's got an army of Amazons at his beck and call. It doesn't lessen the fact, however, that he'll need to set all wrongs to right before Hades ends up freeing himself from the depths of the Underworld. To do that, he'll need to employ everything he's got in his arsenal, while dealing with the adversities coming at him from every corner.

While I've come into this series via the third book, I must say I enjoyed the book itself. Aaron Crash and James A. Hunter have taken the Greek gods and given them an entirely different lore. Some of it does follow the tropes we've come to know and love of the Greek gods, but the authors' creative license have molded the gods and goddesses something new, refreshing, and definitely intriguing.

The story's main protagonist is dealing with the fact that he's the reincarnated God of War. To some extent, anyway. He wants to retain his own self, yet Ares refuses to let him do so. Ares wants what he had before. He doesn't accept the fact that he died so long ago. Thus, he'll do anything to break free of the chains that bind him to Jacob's godstone.

Jacob, on the other hand, is intent on retaining everything he is. It was interesting to see how he asserts himself whenever the God of War tries to overcome him. He's got a lot on his plate, yet he refuses to back down from what he knows is right. The authors have done a lovely job in setting up what's coming soon enough. Whether Jacob achieves an ends to his means remains to be seen. Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing him get there when the time comes.

Jacob an ex-marine turned war God and his amazons get fed up of fighting Earl necro Earl and Antiope in their own city especially as these have necromantic powers, so killing them once or even twice will not cut it, so they decide to take the fight to them especially when Persephone appears in Lycastia City. She is Hades' wife and she hates him, and Earl is Hades' bitch doing his work for him so the war is now full on, the plan being to first take out Earl and then go on to kill the God of death himself in the underworld. Both Jacob and his amazons hoped that once they won the war, removed the threat, sealed the rift and ended things they could enjoy life together as they all imagined this could be! Nowadays jacob could not imagine going back to his real life without his amazons who would be a real no no IRL so he was in it for the long haul. He needed to do this to save the rest of humanity, so they faced hell, its God and its fire with love, loyalty and belief in one another, all for one and one for all. They get to fight Titans, Kraken, Nagas, Harpies, Sea centaurs, Werewolves and all of them were enormous however Jacob and his amazons had their own tricks and magical weapons to turn onto these and so the fun begins. One thing I liked about Jacob and which made him different to Ares, is that he was not in it for the power, in fact he shared his power with his amazons and it was the group effort which made the difference. This is a book which is full of action on a gargantuan scale from start to finish and at the end Jacob realises that there is no rest for the God of War so we can look forward to more books in this series!

Say that this is not the end!

Jacob and company are being deluged with monsters every eight hours and are fighting to maintain their city. An unexpected goddess, who suffers from amnesia, comes to Jacob to plea for help. However, she inadvertently widens the rift the sigil is protecting. The decisions that he makes after this discovery could make or break not only his fate, but that of the world. The action in this book starts and does not stop. Minimal editing issues - so appreciated- and so many questions answered. Would have liked a little more information on what Jacob discovers with the goddess, but that could be in future books. Kudos, James and Aaron! Let this not be the end.

(This reviews for the audiobook) This book is so good I found myself laughing my butt off more times than not in this book. The other two books in the series were good no doubt about but this one completely takes the Cake. Without adding any heavy spoilers it was such a good decision by the author to make one character lose their mind it added a bunch of Comedy to it and hats off to the amazing narrator he did such a good job with vocalizing the depiction of Madness it was soo good. The section where you meet Daedalus is also absolutely phenomenal.

Everyone do your self's a favor and read this book.

Action, Action, Action

Jacob and his Amazons are caught in a repeating cycle of attacks on their city. How can they go on the offensive to break the cycle and stop Hades from decimating the world? I like the action, humor, and love. Will Jacob, War God, take the ultimate risk for the love of his Amazons? Or, will he succumb to Ares's personality and eschew humility and concern for others? I hope there will be more books in the series, as it would be fun to see Jacob and his Amazons protect the Universe.

Very Nice!

A great conclusion (?) to the series, this action-packed story pulls out the stops and gives you everything you wanted to see in the wrap-up, along with some drama, humor, and of course Battles. It also introduces you to a hellish Rockford Illinois, but that just adds to the fun. Definitely recommended, especially for fans.

The final battle is upon us as an unexpected visiting goddess who has lost her memory offers a dangerous solution to defeatjbg the forces of Hades.
The best one yet as i love how the solution and the tools came into the story and how this series was closed off as it kept me guessing till the end and left this open to further adventures.
Narration again was great as Armen does his usual.

A bit of a letdown compared to Book 1 & 2. The characters themselves were a little "jumbled" compared to how they had been portrayed in the previous novels. The MC didn't seem to grow much as a person and the antagonist Earl-Echo-Earl seems to magically always be one step ahead of the MC in terms of power. Decently written but a bit frustrating to read.

Satisfying finish to the trilogy

Stayed pretty consistent with the previous 2 books. The final battle in the underworld did strain my credulity a bit, but it was fun. I enjoyed the book and the series. A few cultural references eluded me. Was well worth reading.

Insulting

I dislike that chose that you chose to paint as Gillian's, a god of a pantheon you know little about. because the people who worship them are far away. It is unnecessary and offensive.

Thrilling conclusion

Man, what a ride. I stayed up after work to finish this, and I’m glad I did. My only regret is not having more to read! Seriously, it’s a great story and I hope enough readers agree to convince the authors to keep going.

Just Brilliant , Just Brilliant

I really enjoyed this as the speed of this jumped up a few notches and rather than the grind we expect , Hunter uses his usually curveball writing style to throw us a surprise and also great new story arc at the same time.
Hunter and Crash working together always does well so I just have to grab any collaborations they do as its always a win for the reader.
An easy 5 stars given well deservedly.
