Somewhat more visceral than I remember the TV series being, but they share the same sense of lurking, isolated dread

This was adapted into a serial for the BBC ~1981 and at the time terrified me. I found the book some years later and reading it brought back that frisson of fear but sadly left me dissapoint in the end.
Not a bad book by any means, but somewhat dated in style and content now.
