3 1/2 stars. Kana is a bit like Sydney Fox, from Relic Hunter, including an aide who is in love with her. She is different enough that it doesn't feel a clone, particularly her ethnicity (hey, the book mentions it numerous times so it is ok to mention it). Kana is not perfect: she drinks too much, has bad taste in men, a bit arrogant, and isn't a great shot against moving targets. She is feisty, and has loads of courage but that gets her into big trouble sometimes.

Plenty of action, some surprises and paranormal artifacts. It a recipe for a good book.

Great adventure with paranormal elements and a lot of action. I loved the book and look forward to read the second on its release.

I like snarky heroines and Kana Cold was definitely a great one. She is possessed by a demon that comes out and for now she is able to keep it at bay. Will things change now that her name is within the underworld of the paranormal? Only another book in the series will answer this question. I have many more questions about Kana. Like: what happened in her childhood that put her and A.J. together? Why are her parents only quickly mentioned? Can the Shinigami be driven out or will she have to work with the demon? I am an avid reader of the paranormal and this book delivered the experience that I was looking for. I would recommend this book to those who like paranormal and great heroines!

I felt like the pacing was a bit off... there was a long build up, and then everything seemed to come together in the last few pages, and I'm still not entirely sure who figured out what, when, and how.

I think this author has a lot of good ideas, which is why this got a three star instead of a two star, but they really need another edit. Pacing, characterization (I struggle to buy the presentation of the main characters as both insanely young and insanely experienced in life, but I'd be willing to consider it if we had some real hints as to why), spelling/grammar; there's a good story hidden under the structural missteps.

Also, a new pet peeve that I didn't know I had... If you're going to include bits of other languages, make sure that you have them correct. Herr, nor Heir, and Fuhrer, not Furor.

Kana Cold: The Reaping of the Black Grimoires by KC Hunter is a wonderful story that I read writen by a brand new author I never read before this story. This is a wonderful start to a brand new series and I loved reading this story. I highly recommend this story to everyone.

The book had promise but didn't deliver. Great premise but characters were not fleshed out and relationships, story, and situations were rushed and in a lot of way unbelievable. Dialog needs work. Not sure if I will continue to read the series.

Preface: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The idea behind this series is explained by the author in the beginning - essentially a paranormal Indiana Jones. That idea is genuinely interesting, but unfortunately the book itself can't quite live up to the set-up. The characters are mostly bland and flat. Kana has a lot of potential, but there's not very much to make you root for her - she is cold (duh), aloof, and generally uncaring. She has that gooey center, supposedly, but that doesn't really show up here, we just hear about it. It sounds like it was important in another book in the series (despite this being the "first" book, there is apparently a prequel novella) but the events from that book are baaarely touched on in a scene that ends up introducing a big bad evil force that doesn't pay off in the context of this particular novel.

The other characters are also pretty bland, though they have the /potential/ to be interesting. AJ is probably unsalvageable, but Stefan's concern for his brother and Anastasia's departure from typical stacked blonde tropes have a lot of potential. They just weren't particularly capitalized upon here.

The plot itself is very boring. Kana and AJ are trying to find three evil grimoires for the Vatican, and they do a lot of globe-trotting to accomplish this. Unfortunately, none of these settings/scenes are really all that interesting, and any sense of urgency is dispelled by the ridiculousness of the villain, a secret organization that wants to do typical supervillain things. If we had an interesting rival to compete with, that would be one thing, but it's just the typical goons and masterminds. The bit in Japan had the most potential, but instead of capitalizing on the witch character (who was cool!), it swerves into another cliche that I won't get into (because spoilers).

Ultimately, the story is pretty lack-luster and not terribly different from any other collect-the-McGuffins romp. It also has the unforgivable sin of lumping the SCP wiki into its canon, which would have made me groan aloud if I weren't in public. I would not recommend this book, but I think the author has the grounds to do something interesting with the series as she grows as a writer.

Let me start off by saying I did give the prequel to this book the Case of the Shinigami 3 stars, so going into this book I figured it would be at least a 3 star book minimum. I was sadly mistaken.

Kana and her partner AJ are sent on a new mission by the Vatican to find three grimoires over in Europe. Along the way they meet a man named Stefan who offers to help them and a host of unsavory characters. I had so many issues with this book and honestly wanted to DNF it multiple times.

I understand that I received a review copy, but let me be clear, this needs a lot of review still. From several grammar mistakes, spelling mistakes and mixing up characters names was just a disaster. There were several times when they were referring to a character and it made no sense until I reread the passage several times and realized they meant to use a different characters name.

Also for this being a paranormal story, there was hardly anything paranormal about it. There were some booby traps, a magical display and of course the ending with the grimoires but it was all more just an action story.

I was disappointed that we really learned nothing more about AJ or Kana's past which could use a lot more character building. Kana comes off as this hard-ass, cold, uncaring 22 year old, but it's never mentioned what made her this way, we are just supposed to accept that this is how she is. We know almost nothing about AJ, how he became so involved in electronics and computers or how he became involved with Kana to begin with. We do meet a new character Stefan, and we learn a lot more about him then we know of our main characters. The one thing that really bugged me about him was that he was clearly meant to play a love interest for Kana, and while I was all on board for her hard core use'em and lose'em attitude, to find out that she actually falls for this guy just ruined my impression of her.

There was a good chuck of this story that I feel could have been left our or minimized. It seems the author likes to world/character build on irrelevant things more than the important aspects. All in all this story was a major miss for me.

I received an advanced review copy from Hidden Gems in exchange for an honest review.

Let me say this first, I like Indiana Jones and if this book were a movie, I am sure I would love it. Even as an audiobook I think I would like it more, but it seemed to drag on for me. Sometimes it was hard to not be frustrated with Kana and A.J. They were operating their own business and convinced they could handle more serious cases (or at least Kana was), but when they came upon a real case, they fumbled around, didn’t do any really research, and mooched off of a complete stranger - how did they even know they could trust Stephen? I really liked AJ and Kana’s characters, or at least I could see myself liking them more if there were a few more interactions between the two of them before Stephen entered the picture. Stephen was a bit off-putting to me. I think he wasn’t quite charming or kind enough to gain my trust, but he was Kana’s type so that makes sense. This is just my opinion, though. So if you liked The Librarian movies or Indiana Jones, give this book a try!

My constructive criticism is that some of it was naive but not quite funny enough to pull off the “This is totally unrealistic, but cute and funny” vibe that I think the author was going for. It dragged on in the middle, which made it hard to get to but as an audiobook it would have been fine. The most confusing part for me was when it would change the point of view, especially when it was two people of the same gender. When Kana was with Anastasia, I had to re-read a lot to figure out what was happening because it would switch to go from Anastasia’s point of view. I can handle that if it changes at a new chapter, but from paragraph to paragraph is too much for me.

Kana Cold: The Reaping of the Black Grimoires is a very entertaining read. With a thrilling, Indiana Jones-style plot and an interesting cast of characters, this paranormal thriller will keep you reading from cover to cover.

Having first read the prequel to this book, Kana Cold: The Case of the Shinigami, I fully expected something similar from The Reaping of the Black Grimoires: paranormal investigators saving people from deadly ghosts. Kana was destined for more than that, it seems, as she embarks on an exciting paranormal relic chase across the world. I won’t say that I wasn’t a little bit disappointed by the change in genre, because I was hoping for a little more horror than mystery/thriller, but the end result was actually a very fun read so I’m not that mad about it.

I thought the plot flowed extremely well; it had good pacing and excellent ups and downs. There was a good amount of tension where tension was needed, and a good amount of palpable emotion from the characters and the settings. I enjoyed the twist, which was not altogether unpredictable but still surprised me (though I’m easy to dupe), and from beginning to end I found the story very entertaining, though not necessarily intriguing, but that could be because this genre isn’t really my thing (I hated the movie National Treasure, for example).

I thought the characters were real and believable, and decently well fleshed out, especially compared to the prequal, although on occasion I did find them just a little juvenile. They are young, though, so that’s to be expected, I suppose. It wasn’t enough to really annoy me.

There were, however, a couple of things that did bother me about the story. Since the Shinigami of the prequal is the pinnacle to Kana’s backstory, I expected it to play a much bigger role in all of her tales, but it barely made an appearance in this book, which was slightly disappointing. Considering it wasn’t given its due diligence in the prequal either—despite being the main antagonist—I had hope for more drama in that regard.

I also felt that the dialogue was a little clunky at times, and the writing a little bit less “show” and more “tell”. It wasn’t too bad, and I think the writer will improve with time (and maybe better beta readers/editors), but it did bother me a little bit sometimes. It wasn’t enough for me to bump the score down to a three.

All in all, I had a good time reading this novel. This isn’t my usual genre, so I was fully expecting not to move on to the next book as I was finishing off this one, at least until the final twist, which the author expertly put in the very last page. In either case, if you’re a fan of movies like Indiana Jones and National Treasure or books like the Da Vinci Code, you will probably enjoy this story, which is just as fun as Indiana Jones, and almost as intriguing as the Da Vinci Code.

Kana Cold: The Reaping of the Black Grimoires starts out great. The concept is interesting and the characters are intriguing. However, the pace of the book slows down tremendously the further you get into it and I almost stopped reading due to how bored it was leaving me. Major plots in the story were predictable and the characters became incredibly obnoxious. I found this book to be disappointing, as I was expecting more supernatural occurrences/focus, but if you really like stories similar to Indiana Jones...this is the book for you.

Additional Note: The promotions/descriptions for this book mention several urban fantasy authors, including Patricia Briggs. This was the reason I decided to give this book a chance. While reading I found myself thinking of Clive Barker's Imajica only to find out after reading that the author lists him as one of his inspirations. However, do not be fooled. The only thing that qualifies this as urban fantasy or horror in any way is a few minor details. If you remove these you have just another adventure relic hunter story. I feel like that is a bit deceptive.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

Kana and her sometimes unlikely allies race across the world in search of 3 cursed religious relics that could spell big trouble in the wrong hands. Lots of action, a bit of a romance (with the steamy bits staying behind closed doors). Written with a cinematic eye, it was an exciting read.

I can see the influences the author claims. This book had a Indiana Jones meets Jessica Jones feel, except Kana is still very soft under her cold exterior. Hmm, maybe a bit more like Romancing the Stone. Where The Case of the Shinigami reminded me a bit of the Winchester brothers with the creepy paranormal monsters, The Reaping of the Black Grimoires was less about the paranormal and more about the treasure hunt. Kana is young, inexperienced and has just taken her first case in the big leagues. She has a lot to learn and a lot to prove.

This is book 1 in the series (not counting the prequel) so there is quite a bit of world building and character introductions. Lots of questions and possibilities are raised for future books. I think this has a lot of potential.

Supernatural fantasy set in Japan, Germany, Israel, Romania and the U.S.

Kana Cold and business partner AJ are paranormal investigators who accept a new job—one which requires money, knowledge, weapons, deviousness beyond their current skill set. It’s like Shawn and Gus of the TV dramedy “Psych” falling into an Indiana Jones movie.

Luckily, our duo has help from a handsome and too perfect Stefan—a mysterious man with connections too good to be true . . . or legitimate. With Stefan’s resources and timely assistance from a wealthy frenemy named Anastasia, our duo manage to fly around the world, hide in safe houses, acquire arms and electronics, defeat a powerful organization, and return home safely. Protagonists Kana and AJ had so much help that I docked a star.

I’m certain Kana and AJ will keep learning whilst working to solve cases and trying to stay alive.

Why did every character oozed arrogance? From 22 year-olds to... whatever?

Anyway, this is the first book in the series, telling the story of a ghost hunter type of girl going on a worldwide chase of a grimoire. Her partner AJ. seems to be the only normal one having reactions to things. At first I thought these two would be an item by the end, but the hot well connected mess of Stefan got in the way, however, this adventure has lots of surprise alliances and adoption of enemies.

It was difficult to end this book. Instead of reading in two days, I skipped two days. Then I skipped some more. And then, I finished. The only thing remotely interesting was the demonic possession of the main character, that was touched for maybe a paragraph or two, with a few weird convo... and then, poof. No more. The end was way better than the whole thing.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I had a couple of people recommend for me to read this so I got it. I have to say that I like Kana Cold and AJ. I am not all that sure about Stefan. There is still something about him that rubs me the wrong way. There is a lot going on in this book and a lot of different locations. I am not sure I would have been able to handle all of this, but seemed to me that it went a little to smoothly. I have a lot of thoughts but not sure what to share and what not to. I don't want to ruin if for anyone else would would read this book or series. Kana and AJ are going up against a secret and powerful society. That was intense and there is still more I want to in the books to come. Most cases to come.

KC Hunter is a new author for me, but after reading Kana Cold: The Reaping of the Black Grimoires: (Kana Cold Paranormal Thriller Series Book 1), it’s clear that this is someone needing to be followed. I loved Kana, she’s just the kind of kick-a** heroine I adore, and this Jill with its secret societies, black magic grimoires, action, adventure and wild paranormal thrills, is just the kind of story I love. The publisher’s blurb promises that if you love Linsey Hall, Jim Butcher, Shayne Silvers, Patricia Briggs, Faith Hunter, or Steve McHugh then you’ll love this book. I’ve read just about everything written by those other authors and can happily verify that this is a promise that is kept. I’m happy to highly recommend the book.

The heroine Kana and her best bud AJ own and operate their own paranormal investigations detective agency. Mainly small stuff like minor ghost hauntings and exorcisms. But they have just been hired to investigate a break in at the Vatican and locate and obtain some ancient grimoire and the disappearance of Professor Granger, Kana and AJ's friend and teacher from their brief stint in college. Lots of intrigue and suspense and a deadly race to obtain the magical grimoires as other interested parties are in pursuit. A good storyline, highly entertaining.

How many societies can Kana make enemies with?

Interesting read. Kana, the main character, is a tough girl and not taken very seriously by most people. She has been recruited to find the black grimoires and she accepts the case because she was informed that Professor Granger had been looking into them when he disappeared.

This is a book for anyone into a little mystery and a little bit of the occult. The other characters help make it interesting. AJ is kinda nerdy, Stefan is confident and mysterious, then there is all the trouble they run into.

Seldom do you come upon a book series that you simply fall in love with the stories and the characters, but that is exactly what happened when I started reading the Kana Cold series. I love how real and palpable all the characters are in this book as if you are reading a biography rather than a fictional character. Plus the mix of the paranormal with James Bond-like action is just perfect. I get done reading one of these books and I can't wait to start the next one. This book series ranks up there with Twilight and Outlander for me.

DNF - The book simply fell too flat, in every way. The premise is pretty good, so two stars for that. Everything else was so thin, it was seethrough.

This is just too little and too rushed to suck you in, it's not fleshed out, it doesn't read as a story, actually. It's just a series snapshot of events.

They find the first book, which had been sought for centuries, in five seconds flat. The character interactions are sad. The villains even worse. So, no, I won't be finishing. Shame, this could have been good if the author had let the story fill out.

A young four year old girl (Melody)) is being haunted. Her father finds a young couple of paranormal researchers to try and help her. While trying to save Melody, Kana must face her fears and accept help from her investigative partner A.J.
I liked all of the characters except the mother. The story is creative and enjoyable . If you love learning about different mythologies, you will enjoy this series.

Convincing story!

I love your plot , the ghost hunting escalating into more dire threats is a fresh idea and opens up Kana's future! I also liked AJ's consistency in their relationship, and the danger involved during the book with the sexy stranger, and everything Anastasia does! Good job! I am obviously going to read the next book, and I'll see if it has evolved the way I hope it does....

Good book depending on your taste..

While this book keeps the reader's attention, it is highly predictable. If you enjoy reading about the paranormal, this book could easily be given a 5 star. It easily infuses action, mystery and magic that will keep you going back for more eventhough you may already have an idea about some of the characters. The ending of this story...well you must read it!

She is asked by rome to go and find three dark and dangerous books. It will not be easy as another group wants the books for a very different reason. Meanwhile a man is distracting her from her job. Will she get the books? Can she stay in front of the group? What about the man?.See if she can find and deliver the books back to Rome

Kana wanted to break into the big game of the paranormal and she gets what she wants in spades. Kana and AJ are in pursuit of the Black Grimoires and while they manage to find them, they also pick up new enemies. Her old professor, Dr. Granger, seems to have played some role but they are told he is dead but is her? it is action packed and interesting to read. I do wonder who has the Black Grimoires now because it wasn't the Vatican as Kana thinks.

I really like the idea behind this story and overall it was a pretty decent read but with a little bit of editing and proofreading this could be a 5 star read. The suspense and pacing starts out great but becomes a tad boring then picks up again at the end. I am glad I stuck with it and I would defintely give book 2 a try.

Lots of Action

This was a fun book. The action was good and the story better. I still have a little understanding of Kana though. She is young and tough. Yet also naive. She learns a hard lesson in this story. Hopefully she takes it to heart. Turned out to be a good read and left me wanting to read the next one.
