YES! To girls being inspired by strong women! YES! To girls befriending each other! YES! To girls participating in liking and playing sports! YES! To girls trying new things in the face of adversity and haters telling them they can't. YES! To friggin supportive and cheerleading parents!
There's so much to love about Kicking Ice! The enthusiasm for hockey is, of course, part of it, but you don't have to love hockey to love this book. I like watching hockey, but I love girl power. I also maybe loved the throwaway Batman line a lot too lol.
I loved that the coach and other boys didn't seem to mind that they were playing with two girls. I loved that the girls got to meet and were encouraged by real NWHL players. I loved P.P.W. (Prove People Wrong). I loved Skye's mom & Bella's parents (especially Bella's mom & her reaction to hearing that Derek says that girls don't play hockey lol).
I sped through this & would love to read more!
The back of this book is chockful of hockey history, sketches, and info from professional hockey/sports writers.

This was such a fun read - it was so exciting to see women's hockey at the center of a story, with a league and real-life characters that I recognized! Also, a fun flex for my first "official" published work in a real book - I was one of the writers who added some blurbs about women's hockey history at the end of the graphic novel.
