This is a book that I picked up from a communal shelf at work purely out of boredom. It was not something I thought I had any interest in, being in my early twenties, but from the very first page I was enthralled. I won't go into the why's but I will say that I have read this stunningly immersive escapade at least 5 times, every time from the first page to the climactic last pages. It's almost like an old friend, something I can pick up and lose myself in. I cannot recommend this book enough.
This book held me from the first page to the last sentence. I found myself wishing it were not fiction! In the midst of World War I, with Germany and England at war, Russian Revolutionaries kidnap Czar Nicolas of Russia and his family, and they are imprisoned on an estate in eastern Russia. King George V of England decides to appeal to his cousin Willy (Kaiser of Germany) with whom he is at war, to join forces in smuggling 'Dear Cousin Nicky" out of Russia to safety in England. He sends an American Naval Officer to seek out the Kaiser, enlist his aid and organize the rescue. It is a rip roaring rollicking story.
If you get a chance to read this by all means do so.
I have read several other of Justin Scott's books and enjoyed them all.
A fast-paced historical novel which takes place during the latter stages of WWI...the royal houses of England and Germany, though on opposing sides of the conflict, agree to a plan to attempt to rescue their cousin, Czar Nicholas, from Russia before he is taken by the Bolsheviks....very well-written...an interesting read for those who enjoy historical novels of this period.
This was a beautiful departure from the type of books I normally read. Set during WWII, there's plenty of action and intrigue and smart writing. Historical fiction that reads like a Bourne movie.
