5☆ A Chilling, Highly Compelling Psychological Thriller, I Couldn't Put Down!
What She Did is a chilling, psychological thriller that got under my skin and I loved it!!
This is my second book I have read by Alex Kane and her books keep getting better and better!
This is a story of three very different women. All hurt in their past, yet things spiral as the story weaves between them, from past to present and things start to become dark and a lil sinister! Who can you Trust?
The three women are Beth, Victoria and Lydia. All three are very very Complex Characters, bound together unknowingly.
Eek I so want to write about the plot, but if I do it might give things away and it's just way to good!
There are some sensitive subjects such as domestic violence, manipulation, grief, suicidal thoughts and adultry but Kane handles them with the right amount of sensitivity to still make an impact which is keeping in relevant to the story.
The chapters go from past to present each chapter in a different characters Point of View, but it flows perfectly.
What She Did is a dark and perfectly twisty and thrilling psychological thriller, that I devoured in one night I just couldn't put it down! All the cleverly plotted connections/links are perfect some I really didn't see coming!, the back stories are chilling and at times a little disturbing. I loved each Character in their own way, they were twisted, complex, desperately flawed and really well written.
Overall another Gem of a book by Alex Kane!
Would I recommend reading this Highly Compelling book..... Without a Doubt.... 100%..... Yes!
Alex Kane has become one of my favourite Authors!
Thank you to Book On The Bright Side Tours for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
What She Did is Alex Kane's second novel and whilst it is targeted at the thriller market I feel it's very close to crossing into the women's fiction/chick lit genre, so if you enjoy both this should fit you to a T. It centres around three strong women, Beth, Lydia and Victoria, who each have troubled pasts they are desperate to escape from. Beth is trying to escape the tragedy surrounding her ex-boyfriend's death, Victoria is in an increasingly loveless marriage with husband Greg. When she stumbles upon some dodgy texts on his phone her worst suspicions are just about confirmed. This leads to her contacting Lydia and the two plotting revenge, but there is much more going on than you initially realise.
This is a solid, captivating read with relatable characters living very ordinary lives and dealing with believable problems. What takes the book to the next level for me is how emotionally involving it is; Ms Kane's portrayal of each of the characters' situations felt authentic with some truly heart-wrenching moments. Packed with twists, tension and emotion this is an absorbing, lifelike tale and the fact that it is told in dual timelines (past and present) and switches between Beth, Lydia and Victoria's perspectives makes it well-rounded and engaging. An easy, fast-paced novel which rapidly gets quite sinister and intense. Many thanks to Hera for an ARC.
There are some thriller books which follow the norm beginning, mid, and an explosive end. Then there are those like this book which had me scrambling all over the pages, trying to get to the truth. How did I miss the clues? How did the author Alex Kane pull the wool over my eyes? The book was so deliciously cunning!!
Alex Kane had crafted her plot so wickedly that I had to go back and re-read a few scenes. The chapters were melded so well that it had me searching minutely for the seam to see the disjointed jagged ends. But no such luck. I could have never guessed the massive reveal of the last few chapters. Quite an innovative plot in recent times.
2 women, Beth and Victoria were in abusive relationships, and soon a friend common to both, Lydia, decided to help them. But they were linked by a secret so horrifying that I had a hard time believing that I was duped so well by the story.
I did have a tiny niggle popping up, the story was a bit slow for me as the chapters kept moving from past to present of the same 3 characters. Somehow, that confused my brain.
Overall, this was certainly a different psychological thriller, quite unexpected. You have to read it to believe it. But be warned— you have to believe what you are reading where what you read is not what you should believe and what you should believe is what you read between the lines. Go figure this out!! FANTASTIC!!
From the opening of the book it drew me straight in. It promised something very dark and boy did the author deliver.
The story alternates between three women flicking between past and present. The author skilfully plays with her readers minds, feeding us bits of information and glimpses of what is to come but not just quite what and I sure was not ready for how it all comes together at the end.
Beth and Victoria are women that due to their past have issues in their present life. They are both trying to move on with their lives and overcome their past fears but as we all know, life sure does throw a curve ball and wow what a curve ball.
As the story moves a long, it just gets darker and almost eerie. I had a feeling of trepidation that I just couldn’t shift and didn’t no why. When all become clear, well you could have knocked me over with a feather. I even had to go back and read a part again as my brain couldn’t quite comprehend what I had just read as I just hadn’t seen what was before my eyes, coming.
What She Did is a dark, at times disturbing but riveting read that I couldn’t devour quick enough. It’s definitely one of those, just one more chapter kind of reads that you won’t be able to put down. The story line left me feeling like someone had walked over my grave as it certainly will give you chills. What a great novel by the author, really enjoyed it and has to be my personal favourite of her books.
My thanks to Hera Books and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
So, that prologue… Wham! What a fabulously powerful opening to draw you in to this intriguingly dark psychological thriller. Told from the points of view of Beth, Victoria and Lydia, and alternating between past and present, What She Did explores the lives of these three women, looking at the sensitive subjects of domestic abuse and misogyny, as well as betrayal when a person is at their most vulnerable, but gives us a clever slant on who really has control in their relationships. With each chapter the tension builds, pausing perfectly at a place where you are desperate to find out what comes next. Oh, that bathroom scene. No spoilers, but I swear to God my heart skipped a beat. There was a point (the phone!) where I said – as in actually said out loud – Oh, no, and closed my eyes. Definitely as slow swallow down the throat moment. I lived it, I swear. Superbly written.
The resolution is jaw-dropping. If you love your psych thriller edgy, chilling and brilliantly twisty, I highly recommend What She Did.
What a prologue!!!!!! I love a good prologue to kick off a psychological thriller and Ms Kane has written one that ticks that box big style!! And rereading it after finishing the book….oh my…..
What She Did is a tale of toxic relationships. This theme bubbles away all the way through, showing how friendships and relationships can start off so well but rapidly turn sour with the alpha in the pair taking control. I found it unnerving and thought-provoking; I had a think about my relationships (thankfully all mine are healthy, well I think they are).
I read late into the night, following this dark twisted Scottish soap opera on my kindle like an addict. This is a lot darker than Kane’s previous book, No Looking Back. I was wrapped up in the lives of these three women trying to find some sort of happiness in life. The writing kept my eyes glued to my kindle wondering how far Lydia would go for Victoria.
And OMG what a startling ending!!!! That I did not see coming at all!! Bravo Ms Kane
Alex Kane is a new author to me, so I didn’t have any idea what to expect. I am very happy to have been given the chance by NetGalley to discover a fantastic author. It’s difficult to describe the story without giving too much away but it’s an excellent suspense thriller with a great plot. The last few chapters are amazing and so well written. At first I didn’t enjoy how the chapters were jumping between characters and past & present, but as the story unfolded it actually worked really well. What She Did is a great read and one of my favourites this year
This took way too long to get to the point and I grew frustrated and confused along the way.
The thing is that the writing is decent as are the characters. The suspense exists almost from the start and doesn’t wane (at least for me). There is something that niggled in me that things weren’t as they seemed but I wasn’t sure why.
The reveal has me a bit muddled in my feelings on this one. I have read something with a similar reveal recently and that is tainting this a bit (which I know is unfair). But also it leaves me feeling a bit cheated. Maybe if it gave up the reveal a bit sooner I would have been able to appreciate it more?? I think if it’s new to you then you will find it clever and go back and see connections and whatnot but I’m not inspired to do so.
Overall, I liked the writing style I urge you to give it a shot if it sounds appealing. I would read more by this author. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Hera Books for a copy in exchange for a review.
What She Did by Alex Kane is a gripping, psychological thriller about three women, Beth, Victoria and Lydia…
Beth, escapes from an abusive relationship and trying to make a new life. Victoria believes her husband is cheating on her and turns to her old friend, Lydia, to find out if he is.
I have to admit to getting a little confused at times by the many twists and turns in the story, it was a bit hard to keep up. But as the story progresses, they stories all link and the final gasp inducing twist is just brilliant….
A dark, thought provoking tale of domestic violence and the struggles women have in a male world.
Thank you to Sarah at Book On The Bright Side for the opportunity to participate in this blog tour and for the promotional materials and a free copy of the ebook. This is my honest, unbiased review.
Alex Kane's third novel is a dark psychological thriller, packed with a flourish of twists and turns both high and low, the opening scene really will grab your attention, and as for the rest of the book there will be moments that will really stop you in your tracks because you just won't see them coming!
It is told from 3 women's lives (Beth, Victoria and Lydia's) between past and present point of views, which sometimes I found a little overwhelming to try to keep up but then when all the lives become intertwined it became more a fluid read.
The REAL heart-stopping twist of them all was the very end one, brilliantly done Alex I must say!
I absolutely LOVED this book. Based around three women Beth, Lydia and Victoria all of whom have their own pasts and all of them trying to move on with their life. I didn’t favour one character over another and at first they are all very separate as you learn about each of their lives.
Before long their stories intertwine and slowly things begin to emerge. As the book progresses I found myself more and more drawn into the story and I ended up reading the last three quarters of the book in one sitting. There was a particular part of the story I totally didn’t see coming which threw me. This also had a quite dark side to it and made it seem quite sinister but I truth it just made the book even more engaging. A truly fantastic read and one of highly recommend
WOW! Full of twists with an ending you will never see coming!!!
They say that best friends can go long periods of time without talking or seeing each other and never question the friendship. The friends just pick up where they left off like no time has passed. This can be said for Lydia and Victoria. They met while Victoria was at her lowest and the two developed a very intense bond but when victoria decides to choose her now husband Greg over the friendship, the two part ways until four years later when Victoria begins to suspect the worst about her husband. As her world slowly begins to crumble like it had all those years before, Lydia comes back into her life but put Victoria life right again starting with Beth. Beth just escaped the tragedy that ended with the death of her ex-boyfriend but everywhere she looks she is reminded of him. While trying to find new love, it seems something sinister has found her. As these three lives collide, no one is safe. This book pulled me in right from the first page. Told from alternating points of view, going back and forth from past to present, this story kept me fully engaged. I really found myself sympathizing with Ethan's Victoria and I had a love/hate relationship with Lydia. I also loved the way the characters stories were brought together. there were plenty of twists and turns in this one to keep me on the edge of my seat throughout. It was definitely a great psychological thriller. And that ending! I didn't not see that coming at all! It took me by completely surprise. Overall I loved this one!
I want to thank netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The book kept me guessing what was going to happen, the only thing I did not like was the now and then on the 3 characters sometimes was confusing has who was who.
I so enjoyed this book this author gets better with each book and I cried book is very twisty and addictive and I never seen that coming Beth thinks she has meet the man of her dreams or so she thinks Victoria has got loads of problems and Lydia likes to take control I wont say no more spoils for readers but a brilliant read with a twist you wont see coming book draws you in from start
As the blurb says above this story focuses on three women. Beth, Victoria and Lydia all different ladies, different lives… Or are they? All have had their fair share or trouble with men. The story flicks between the past and the present for each character throughout but this is clearly stated at the start of each chapter so there is no confusion. With the ladies come the men ofcourse… Greg and Lawrence. Now I must say Lawrences character what a horrible excuse for a man, one of those characters that get under your skin and is controlling. I felt sorry for Beth but she is surrounded by some brilliant and supportive friends. I was more drawn to Beths story personally over Victorias. What she did is an eye opening read and brilliantly written. With this story I learnt that everything links. A brilliant read, contains short chapters which I prefer and is a page turner of a read. A well deserved four stars. Highly recommend. I enjoyed reading this one.
What She Did is a tense psychological thriller that gripped me from the very first chapter. It's a dark, disturbing and honest portrayal of mysogony, domestic violence and that women are often found struggling in a world dominated by men.
This book features three very strong women. All with flaws, insecurities and all very relatable. Beth is fleeing from an abusive past while trying to build a new life for herself. I really engaged with Beth. I liked her as a character. We then have Victoria who is trapped within a failing marriage. She suspects her husband of cheating and seeks the advice of an estranged and once best friend, Lydia, to help her unearth the truth.
As the story progresses, the three separate lives become entwined and what you get is a gripping, hold your breath type of a read as you honestly don't know what is coming next. It's also one of those books that is incredibly hard to put down. I began to care about these characters and the fate that awaited them.
The real joy in this book are the many twists and turns along the way, plus the huge twist at the end. It's an engaging read that has you rooting for these women , all of whom have faced some difficulties in life and who have been bullied and betrayed by men.
What She Did is a thought provoking read that makes you question what is right and what is wrong. The lines become very blurred with the stories these women live through, and you do find yourself asking, what would I do?
Ultimately, What She Did is a psychological thriller that gets the blood pumping. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Oh wow!! Alex Kane is a completely new writer to me, but when I saw that What She Did was set in my hometown of Glasgow I just jumped at the chance to read it, and boy am I happy that I did!! Alternating between three women, Beth, Victoria and Lydia, What She Did is a suspenseful tale of abuse, betrayal, fear and friendships.
Alex Kane presents a storyline carved out so intricately with a stream of twists and turns. They just keep coming. The eyes tend to deceive in this one. I mean, really deceive. The author haven’t just written a story, they have created a mind-bending, kaleidoscopic psychological suspense that will make you question everything you’ve read. Yes, it really is that good. I read so many psychological thrillers or mystery-suspense novels that my senses subconsciously pick up even the slightest of clues, I can normally tell how the book will end before the author does, but What She Did messed with my head so badly I was all over the place with this one.
The writing is solid and I sunk easily into the flow that moved along at a moderate pace. The characters were all well-developed and multi-layered, in fact they had so many layers they were like an onion, it took a lot of peeling to get to the mysterious heart of them. Short punchy chapters held my attention and made the storyline engrossing and addictive. What She Did was one of those books that once I started I refused to put down, and managed to read in one sitting.
Boing… The prologue was like being hit with a sledgehammer and I was hooked.
This is not a book you should read when you are tired and already half asleep. This story needs the full 100% of your attention. Well, to be honest every book deserves this of course, but here you really need to keep your eye on the ball. The author lets Beth, Victoria and Lydia do all the talking so we get three points of view and on top of that she allows the three ladies to take us to back to the past while keeping us entertained in the present at the same time. You absolutely must pay attention.
I must admit it was a bit confusing in the beginning, but every chapter has a title explaining which lady is speaking and whether we are in the past or the present. It was a very good workout for my brain. 😊
Now, about the story. It was great. I loved every bit of it. I was dying to find out what happened to each of the ladies, and I could not tear myself away from the book.
And then, at last. Those final chapters where everything becomes crystal clear. Let me tell you, I could not believe my eyes.
This author is an amazing storyteller. This is an amazing book. 5 stars
Beth is a woman running from her demons. Moving to Glasgow to escape the tragedy that had ended with the death of her ex-boyfriend, she is trying to build a new life. But her past is following her, and try as she might, she can't shake the feeling that someone is watching her every move.
Victoria is unhappily married to Greg. \on her wedding day he told her he would love her until they grew old, but now he's becoming secretive, staying out for "business meetings" and growing distant from his wife.
Lydia knows she is the only one who can help Victoria. Jumping straight back into their friendship, despite the four year absence from Victoria's life, she vows to stop at nothing to help her get revenge. Good friends will do anything for each other, right?
This story has a cleverly crafted plot. Beth and Victoria were in a business relationship. They also have a friend in common, Lydia. They are all linked to a terrifying secret.
The pace was on the slow side. The chapters jump from the present day to the past, and it's told from Beth, Victoria and Lydia's perspectives. This is a dark read.
Wow...my first book by this author and won’t be my last.
This book kept me turning the pages. I had my suspicions but I was not sure until the reveal. I did feel sorry for Matt, he did love her but she must have been very hard to live with. You only get to see a little bit of what his life was like with her after he left and they had that conversation. He felt so guilty and took to the bottle. My heart did break for him. He was sorry for what he did, he life was in ruins but he didn’t deserve what happened.
Grey also loved her but again she wasn’t a easy woman to live with.
Beth.....I honestly thought she was a bit stupid. Drinking to the extent she was having blackouts and swearing she would not drink again and then sneaking shots at the bar on her way the toilet. What the hell was she thinking?? If you wake up from a blackout covered in bruises and you don’t remember how you got them......STOP drinking. Laurence was right....she could have said no.....he didn’t force her. I kinda didn’t like her.
Alex Kane, this was a work of pure genius…. Any dark and tense psychological thriller with many twists and turns and a truly jaw dropping ending I did not see coming.
The story revolves around the lives of victoria Lydia and Beth, flicking from past to present tense for each of the characters. Beth has moved to Glasgow to move on from her past. Victoria has a troubled past but Lydia came to her rescue and states she will always be there for her, but then victoria falls for Greg and Lydia disappears from her life, But when Victoria becomes suspicious of Greg she is reunited with Lydia to try and find out what Greg is up to. This is just so amazingly good that I do not want to give any more of the plot away… Fantastic storyline with great characterisation this is one of the top books I have ever listened to. The audiobook narration was absolutely outstanding and really brought the characters to life.alex Kane you got me hooked, cannot recommend this highly enough from start to finish it had my full concentration.
New to me author , new book that i won’t forget very soon for sure as I really didn’t see the end coming. Going back and forward ,between the three women, we are taken in their present life and difficult past with each chapter. I must admit that I was a bit confused because I rarely read books with 3 different POV and the chapters told in their past or present. You know you’ve read a great book when the author manages to leave you speechless with the twists and turns that you just couldn’t see, no matter what you’ve done, no matter how many scenarios you’ve made in your head and thought you’ve got it sorted out. This book is one of those for sure. Overall, I enjoyed the story, great writing as well as good characters, different personalities and interesting minds to say at least, a bond and secrets hidden and revealed when less expected and the twists at the end is just priceless.
Thanks for the opportunity to read and review to the publishers and NetGalley .
OH WOW! I was into it from the start! All along wondering 'who did what?'
Great psychological thriller, well written, many twists, well developed characters and story. Good from start to finish!
I felt so many emotions, I was sad, anxious, angry... and wanted to hurt those awful men abusing their women, trying (succeeding) to control them, make them miserable and make them feel sorry and apologize ?!
When you think you have found the right partner and he's either abusive or cheating, or both...
The story felt close to reality.
At first I was a little confused about the different POVs, past/present but quickly got into it and couldn't stop turning the pages! I just had to find out what happened in the past, what's happening now...
Warning : deals with domestic abuse...
Thank you to NetGalley and Hera Books for the ARC of this book. This is my honest review. All opinions are my own.
What She Did by Alex Kane's was a brilliant. book. I just Loved it. I was hooked from the first few pages and OMG what an explosive ending to this book! Wow I had to pick myself off of the floor.......Just Brilliant!
This book is a gripping, tense psychological thriller about three strong women, Victoria, Beth and Lydia. It flicks between the past and the present of these characters and each chapter is clearly named with their names so you don't get confused. Plus, its very cleverly written with short chapters which I love.
It's a dark and can be disturbing read about domestic violence and women are often found struggling in a world dominated by men.
I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author Alex Kane and Hera Books for the ARC of this book. This is my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Best friend and worst enemy. I started this book as soon as I finished 'No Looking Back' As I finished that book I knew right away I needed to read more by this author. A great writing style and a story that you are drawn into. A story that keeps you wanting to read on. There were parts of the book I wasn't keen on and parts of the book that I loved and needed to keep going with it. Another good read overall and I look forward to reading more.
it's told from alternating points of view, going back and forth from past to present, and I have to be honest at times I got a little confuzzled and had to go back a bit. There are some great twists and in parts it really does hook you and keep you turning those pages.
Thanks for the chance to read and review this book.
I'm sad to say, I just couldn't get on with this book, it kept flipping backward and forwards between the years and characters making it very muddled to me. I didn't know if I was reading about Beth, Victoria or Lydia, it became very confusing. I did keep trying and read it till halfway through but frustration made me stop. It's a shame because her first book was outstanding.
Victoria thinks she has married the perfect man in Greg but she finds to her marriage unfolding he is a control freak.
Beth is trying to escape and recover from the death of her boyfriend
A really good read that had me hooked from the first few chapters. The book alternates chapters between three characters - Beth, Lydia and Victoria. We find out about their lives in the past and also the present and how their lives are all linked. It was a little confusing remembering who was who when it chopped and changed so much, but as the book went on, it all came together. We hear about the men who have been in their lives and learn the girls have all had a difficult past. I can’t say too much more without spoiling it but brace yourself for the final few chapters! Thanks to Hera Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Three and a half star rating. Three women, Beth, Victoria and Lydia, all with problematic histories, whose lives suddenly are on a collision course. It was engrossing from the start and for once I didn’t see what turned out to be the reveal. The ladies weren’t particularly enchanting, bossy, needy, naive and irritating in turns. Not a very long book, but works well that way. I liked how it was written and that the twist didn’t come too soon, which would have spoilt it, for me anyway. I was given this ARC by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Interesting story, had me pretty much hooked from the first few pages. I did struggle at times because the story jumped back and forth and sometimes I found myself losing track of what had happened to who. That had me thinking I would rate it with four stars, however I never saw the ending twist coming and having read plenty of novels, I still didn’t guess the outcome. That doesn’t happen too much, so I felt I had no other option other than giving it a five star review. Great writing throughout.
I received a digital arc of this from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first encounter with this author so I was unsure what to expect. I was a bit confused initially as the story switches between 3 different characters and past and present timelines. There's a lot to keep up with! However I really enjoyed the story and I loved the twist at the end. I should have expected it, looking back, but I didn't so it was a great surprise!
