What a great read! G.J. Ogden has written a wonderful box set full of action and adventure. This is trilogy has it all. Good guys, bad guys, monsters, heroes and just maybe the guy gets the girl, as tough as she may be.
The Planetsider is the first novel of the wonderful trilogy. This Young Adult novel is a bit of a misnomer. It certainly has all of the common elements of a good YA, but it is a bit more in depth than you normally find. Full of action, but also introspective. Ethan, the protagonist is on the classic hero's journey, living through his trials and tribulations. Learning that ignorance is sometimes bliss. This is about a young man coming of age in a Post-Apocalyptic world and his desire to stretch beyond what is expected of him. A young man looking for the truth and finding it cost him his innocence. One of my favorite sub-plots is that he is clueless when it comes to women as all young men are of a certain age. It is hysterically funny without trying to be and that is a hard trick to pull off.
The Second Fall is a pure home-run of Space Opera. G.J. Ogden wrote a truly fun read with very serious undertones. The good guys are the best and the bad guys are the worst, it is all here. War, romance, sacrifice, roads not taken, a boy becomes a man, and petty jealousies all are studied in this excellent novel.
The reader returns five years after the end of The Planetsider and peace is imminent. Treachery raises its ugly head and the heroine Maria must return to planet side for help. In the meantime, the hero Ethan has become a man with all of the responsibilities and must balance his desire to help Maria with his responsibilities to his people.
This is a wonderful read for the story alone. Full of action and and battles. There is plenty for the reader to enjoy just on the surface story. Yet, this is a very contemplative look at the nature of society and human emotions. Ethan, has completed his heroes journey and is now a man. He now experiences the longing of first love returning and realization of the road not taken. It is a moment of ennui that leaves him a bit confused as the boy of the past and the current man now grapples. It is a moment that anyone with a first love briefly returning can understand and it is both understated and perfect.
There is commentary on the environment and what happens when a catastrophe is caused by war. There is a great contrast between the "simple" and the "complex" society with a third introduced and is compared to the first two. It is throughout the novel, but never gets in the way of the story. A true gem of this series is how strong female leads run throughout. It is also so well done that you may miss the larger point that it is the nature of leadership and not gender that matters. They are human with all of the strengths and foibles. Petty arguments get in the way of the mission and grudges are held.
The Last of the Firsts is the final installment of the The Planetsider Trilogy Boxed Set and it does not disappoint. This wonderful novel is closer to adventure than Space Opera and it works on different levels again. This is a race against time to save the planet and loved ones. The key is an enigmatic old man, but he is nowhere to be found.
G.J. Ogden writes another action filled novel with serious undertones. This is a mature work without much of the angst of the first two novels. Yet, this novel is all about hope and keeping the faith in impossible odds. This is also a true study about the nature of teamwork and facing ones personal past. This is about rectifying the choices that led all down the path and trying to right the wrongs. The antagonist is no one, but the entire planet itself dealing with one death blow after another. It has become hostile to life and deals harsh realities to the survivors. Life goes on, but maybe not for those that are the cause. Once again, G.J. Ogden comments on man's treatment of the environment without beating the proverbial dead horse.
As contemplative as this novel is, there is more than enough action to satisfy the worse adrenaline junkies. The Last of the Firsts keeps the reader on their toes holding their breath as the novel requires the price for their characters and the price will be paid.
The The Planetsider Trilogy Boxed Set completes the arc from an idealistic young man to a battle tested adult. It is about the nature of family, how it is defined and the sacrifice required for it. Perhaps the greatest lesson from the novels are the learning to live with past decisions that cannot be taken back. It is both a warning and admission that forgiveness is essential.
G.J. Ogden inserts into this world all sorts of fun tidbits to be studied and he meshes them incredibly well. There is societal studies on religion, relationships, the end of childhood, truth, as well as war. He blends his elements within the weaving of his tale and you never notice because the story flows so smoothly. I was surprised the story ended so fast because it felt like I just started and it left me wanting more.
I have listen and read this trilogy and the audible was the best due to the narrator also the story has many storylines that are so well written that it creates the most perfect tapestry of adventure. The basic is a story of greed, destruction nonstop war and the earth left as a dead planet. In the near future companies almost rules and one company builds a moon station and other builds a space station. At first these two companies are friendly toward each other and producing power source they found on the moon and the space station purfy it and sends it to the mega cities on earth. Then one day the two companies start to fight each for power, control and money but what happen destroyed all the mega cities and parts of the two stations in space. When the war caused the explosion it covered the earth with radiation that effected the human and turning them into monsters or if they were lucky they died. A few years later and you meet human survivors who are not effected by the radiation but they now fight to survive the humans who had turned into monster. As the story continues you live the lives of many people who live on the earth, moon station or space station and the years from the explosion to the a new possible beginning.
Binge read an awesome series. This is action-packed with wonderful characters and a great story that is so difficult to put down. So this box set is an awesome way to read it! Binge!
This was a Prime Reads selection. Thought why not?
I am not the target audience. Well, I should say it was not to my liking. It came across to me as aimed at the Young Adult. I am very much a hard science fiction person. Not much hard science for me to wrap my head around. What science was there was not very scientific. Much more about emotions. Characters seemed too naive, hence why I assume it is a YA targeted book.
This is part of a trilogy and I have all of the parts available to me, but alas I think I will not continue the series beyond book #1.
I've had this for a long time and just got around to reading it. All I can say is I'm sorry for not reading it sooner! It is great!
The Planetsider book one SciFi and dystopian, two of my favorite genres, and this book is definitely among the best. Engaging from the first page.
The Second Fall book 2 Two factions in space, one on the moon the other on a space station have been at war for more than a hundred years. That war is about to end, not in peace but genocide. How will that affect the few people that have managed to eke out an existence on Earth’s surface since the apocalypse that began the war? Equally as engaging as the first volume of the trilogy!
The Last of the Firsts book 3 What a wonderful ending to this trilogy! The whole series is great.
Maria and Page have gone back to the moon base to put an end to the coup. Surely there are supporters they can enlist in their cause. But first they have to make it back undetected and hide from the blue boots and the corrupt officials.
Ethan has set out to rebuild his home in Forest Gate. Enlisting the scientists from the mountain city, things will go much faster and changes for better fortification abound. Still he can’t seem to get through to Summer. Even the thought of their future child doesn’t enliven her.
But Summer and Maria have much more in common than Ethan. Both are suffering from early stages of genetic degeneration from the radiation of the planet. Ethan’s blood didn’t unlock the secret to treating this abnormality as the scientists had hoped.
But Ethan will not give up on Summer. He is convinced that the old hermit holds the key to this problem. But first Ethan must find him and convince him to help.
( Format : Audiobook ) "Temper, temper, Red Hair." A collection of the three books comprising the Planetsider Trilogy: Planetsider, The Second Call (chapter 32) and The Last of the Firsts (chapter 72).. Together the form both a post apocalyptic and an apocalyptic tale, but one still with hope. Unusual and well written stories with fully developed characters - Perhaps too much so as I took such a dislike to one of the central (goodie) players that I have been forced to downgrade the star rating to four.
Narration by J.S.Arquin was superb. With fully individual and appropriate voicings for every protagonist, be their part large or small, he also captured their emotions, despair, temper tantrums, wonder and love, and the text reading between speech was beautifully paced, we!l cadenced and delightfully easy on the ear. An outstanding performance and one which helped carry this reader pleasurable through from the immediately captivating start to the conclusion over 32 hours later.
I was extremely fortunate in being freely gifted with a complimentary copy of The Planetsider Trilogy, at my request, by the rights holder via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. I very much enjoyed being transported to another, albeit devastated, world to spend time with the inhabitants of Forest Gate Settlement, and Ethan, in particular and accompany both him and Maria, together with their various companions, on their turbulent and emotional journeys of hope, love, betrayal, fear and fighting. At times thought provoking, always edgy, yet simple, I commend this trilogy to all who enjoy military action thrillers, science fiction or are simply interested in people interacting with each other.
This book was my go-to book to read when I was ready to go to bed and read until I was ready to go to sleep or my husband told me to turn off my book (my Kindle.) I usually ended up reading for at least two hours until I found a place I felt I could safely leave the characters out of harm's way until the next night. And then there were nights that I had to get up and read more because I could not leave anyone stuck in harm's way. Ethan asks questions about the blue lights in the sky, the ruins in the valley, and of the roamers and the maddened. There's a great cast of characters to keep this story going. And it's not just against the roamers and the maddened that Ethan and his companions have to fight. I am so glad I bought all three books together as the story flowed very well without any interruption.
What does orrum radiation poisoning do to a planet?
The answer is to bring it to the brink of extinction.
That’s the future that faces Ethan, Summer and the inhabitants planetside. However the people of the UEC have other plans.
The UEC and GPS are still at war over a hundred years after the Fall that almost wiped out the planetsiders.
You know that you are reading a good book when you want to get to the end to find out what happens but you also dread reaching the end as you will feel lost without it to read. This is one such story.
I found that tissues were needed for the last chapter so be prepared.
Loved the trilogy. Great characters, good world building, great adventure. All that remains of the world is a few isolated communities after a catastrophe destroyed civilization a century earlier. Few folks want to know or even care about what came before and what really happened. Our hero wants to know though, and that knowledge will be more than he bargained for. Thank you GJ Ogden, great read.
Very good read.. Interesting, mostly believable,characters.. Novel concepts.. However I am a little tired of the zombie angle.. And disappointed in the anti-gun propaganda.. Armies/soldiers need to be ready to fire instantly.. An enemy could overwhelm a fighting unit while they are loading their weapons and removing the safety.. I do wish writers would stick to entertainment and avoid political correctness, really detracts from a good story..
A towering trilogy in the realm of sci-fi by author with great imagination, aware of foibles of human nature, greed, lust for power, desire for peace, duty, honor and truth. Story line built around several well developed characters on earth, colonies on the moon and a huge man made satellite in orbit around the earth. Problems originate from mining venture on the moon, and radiation poisoning, with technology and desire for peace to join forces to save humanity.
A brilliant trilogy of books. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure. I loved these books and I'm glad that the author imagined such a vivid world for us to enjoy. I look forward to more from this author.
An entertaining and well-written story in three parts, telling of the planetsider survivors of an apocalypse and some mysterious arrivals from the skies. The characters are, in the main part, really well developed and the story lines sufficiently interesting to keep your focus. The plot unfolds at a good pace and there are plenty of surprises and moments of relief along the way.
This trilogy has incredibly detailed characters which makes reading it an adventure in itself. The story of the series is of the highest quality as is the thoughtful and immersive experience guaranteed for anyone loving a brilliant action and adventure worthy of more than the 5 star rating system. It's like the characters come alive. I love it.
Pure amateur writing. Character have no depth,no plot, and the main male character only survived death many times is through authors bad writing and not to be Believed escapes. If this guy can make a living from writting this material then the world is surely in trouble. Dont waste your time or money
As with all apocalyptic earth stories I started reading with the potential for this just being a rehash of the common theme.
I was quickly surprised at the author's ability to engage me with the characters and the unusual plot. It was a series that made me want to know what was coming next.
This book(s) have interesting characters that maintain their personality and essence through all of the books. Also, the basic premise combining people caught at different levels of technology, depending on where they were when disaster struck, provides a lot of issues to ponder. What would I do in the same circumstances?
Some really good concepts in the storyline. Characters all seem to have the emotional capacity of a 3-year-old. A few surprises. Does not appear the author knows much about weapons. Overall I figured this was a decent first book, surprised to see he has written a number of books. It's an okay read.
I bought the first book separately, but when I saw the boxed set it was a no brained to get that that too. The authors has done an amazing job in upping the stakes in each one and the finale sees a couldn’t have guessed that ending, which I love.
I’m not much of a reviewer, but I thoroughly enjoyed this series. It was hard to put down and I couldn’t wait to pick it up again. Great story line and empathetic characters.
Great thought provoking story. A long time fan of the dystopian theme of science fiction this story will rang among the very best I’ve read over the last 50 years. My fondest hope is that you too future reader enjoy it as much as I have.
Very entertaining light reading. Well written with great character development. Satisfying ending. Shame the old hermit could make it to the end but a fitting ending to the last of the firsts.
An awesome read about how the ups and downs of life
Thus is the best Si-Fi series I have read in a long time and reminds me of the world we currently live in. My hope is that we will also have as happy and sober of an ending as this story did.
A lively romp from earth to the moon with a space station in between. More character development that typical sci-fi. The arc of Ethan’s personal development through the 3 book set mirrors the evolving nature of post-apocalyptic earth. Highly enjoyable
Another awesome series by G J Ogden. If you like sci fi then i suggest his book series. I have now read all the series and getting ready to start a new series that book one is now available.
Every action of every character seemed real and appropriate to their situation. The books didn't have as much science behind them as I would have liked.
A little disappointed with this series, I’ve read the other 7 and loved them this one is nothing like the others in the set. Still liked this but didn’t love it and missed the other elements from the other 7 in the set/series.
