The Elite Guards #3

The Winter Court

Rate this book
Icelyn was given to the Horde to pay a tithe owed to them by her court. She had no plan of letting them claim her or enter her court. One arrow should have ended it, only it didn’t stop anything.
Instead, she’s now prisoner to the broody, cocky, self-absorbed prince that makes her want things she’s never thought possible. Will she be able to resist him and save her court from the horrors that the Horde has planned? Sinjinn had a mission: Get Cailean to the Winter Court to claim his bride.
It should have been simple. Instead, he gets taken down by a wisp of a woman who stares at him through the clearest blue eyes he’s ever seen before. The taste of her lips sends his world teetering on devastation. She’s his prisoner, so why shouldn’t he claim her as his?
Because she’s his brother’s bride.
Because it wasn’t complicated enough, right?
One arrow will change the destiny of three lives forever. Will they be able to escape the blood oath, or will he lose her to a brother who doesn’t even want her? New allies are being forged, new enemies emerge, and no one is safe within the realm of Faery anymore.
Not a reverse harem, or a love triangle.

DNF@45%!
I tried really hard to get into this book but I can’t take it! I tried skimming but It’s filled and filled with sex! Not even hot sex IMO! I am not against sex in my books! I LOVE some hot steamy panting dripping sex but when it’s every other page it has me rolling my eyeballs! This one right here started with zero tension between these two and bam you got his thickening cock and her dripping wet cunt and bla bla bla fucking bla!!! It is so fucking annoying I’m not going any further! It’s taking away from the story and I find myself putting the book down more and more and not caring one damn bit how it ends. I loved other books by Amelia but not this one. I’m really sad that her books have come to this:(

damn, this was very, very good...
but that's exactly what I expect from Amelia Hutchins

She created Ryder the Horde king, the ultimate alpha Fae, for fuck's sake LOL

and even though, nothing and no one can top that, really, but all these hardcore alphas can certainly try *smirks* and I'll welcome this attempt with open arms...

This story...shortly, it could be summed up with just two words: Fire and Ice and you can image the rest that unravels...or don't, LOL, just read the book! *wink*

The Winter Court was a step up from the last book. Sort of.

In it, you will meet Sinjinn and Icelyn. Sinjinn is probably my favorite in this book just because of his sarcasm. Yet, he definitely gets himself into a really hot mess. This train wreck was hard to look away from but at the same time I enjoyed it somewhat. I mean.. it's not often that you sleep with a girl thinking she's not royalty and then finding out she is betrothed to your brother 2 seconds later.

Talk about awkward.

On top of that, she's pregnant.. with twins. So, yeah, things get awkward and messy real quick throughout this book. Plus, it gave me someone to really hate - her stepfather. He just gave me psycho vibes and I cringed when he was talking about wanting to sleep with her. Ew. NO thanks to that idea buddy.

In the end, it wasn't a completely horrible book.

Drama, drama, drama. What would you do if you fell for the wrong brother?
Icelynn and Sinjinn's book is fantastic. Fun, action packed and intriguing. Icelynn is a kickass heroine, props to Hutchins. And Sinjinn finally gets his moment to shine. The Winter Court is a next chapter in the Elite guards series and is just as much or not more spectacular then the previous books. If you are not already a fan of Amelia Hutchins then be sure to not start with this book. Please start at the beginning with the Fae Chronicles or you will not fully appreciate the full brilliance of this world.
This book is a wonderful addition to the series and I definitely recommend you add it to your TBR list.

“The most beautiful creatures are not those who shine from the outside. They shine from within, their minds are a thing of purity and beauty, and you are that.”

I’m really happy that we get to have another story for Ryder’s brother. This time we have Sinjinn and Icelyn from the Winter Court. I really love the build up of their story. New characters were also introduced and hopefully we get to see more of them. Especially Asher🥰, I really hope that Amelia won’t kill him😂. I also can’t wait for more of Zahruk, we’ve been waiting like forever for his story 😊.
If you’ve been following the Fae Chronicles, all the books in the Elite Guards Series, Playing with Monsters & Wicked Knights are a must read. The world building is brilliant and you will surely be hooked 🥰

Sinjinn and Icelyn’s story. These two did not have an easy journey… She shoots him with an arrow, he makes her his sex prisoner, and then finds out she’s his brother’s betrothed…. Awkward…

I enjoyed this. It reminded me of the original books that were formulaic (angry, semi-badass h that hates the fae with a bonehead, bossy alpha-male), but those are the books (1-4) that hooked me on the series. It’s more streamlined with a smaller cast to keep track of and a more contained storyline. There’re no extremely long, drawn-out, repetitive conversations where they discuss the same topic. There’re no wordy, heroic speeches repeated over and over again. It was refreshing… I was entertained.

Without giving details, this one is darker pertaining to abuse than the other ones. There’s also more “sampling” going around that isn’t bad… just different. I liked Icelyn a lot; she reminded me of early Syn but more mature. I can’t say I was overly impressed with Sinjinn; we don’t know much about him. He’s been around since the beginning, but most of his page time has been responding to orders. He wasn’t bad, just rather bland. I never really felt like his character was developed.

I usually complain when we get more characters/creatures/subplots dumped into the Fae Universe, but I am interested in Asher and the Seelie. I always thought the Seelie were the “good guys,” and it feels like this will be opposite. I hope we get clarification and some background.

One of my ongoing grumps is the lack of backstory/explanation/worldbuilding supplied. Typically, a new court, character, species just shows up and become part of storyline with no details. We did get some information on the lesser courts that was helpful.

💠They aren’t as powerful and most need to be near their kingdoms to draw power.
💠They don’t go through Transition. I think this means they don’t need to “fuck to feed” and they eat real food.
💠It appears they can’t sift. Lilith needed Asrian to sift, and Icelyn ran away from the bad guys.
💠They maintain their virginity for marriages. (also, why I don’t think they “fuck to feed” since this was a HUGE deal with Ciara being one.

Bottom Line- I liked it. You might be mildly confused a few times if you read this as a standalone, but not a ton.

SPOILERS
Random things that confuse or distress me- and won’t fit in the notes

🤯 Sinjinn is ½ Horde (Alazander) & ½ mix of Ifrit and Djinn. This explains the fire power, where does the wolf come from?

🤯 Zahruk is the alpha wolf but can take any shape (only one that can) He also can project memories wearing Assassin’s Creed robes. States that they don’t know who his mother was, but there has been mention in previous books that the Assassin’s Creed/mind reader gift was from his mother. Do they not know what breed/type of Fae he is? Aren’t there other Assassin’s Creed/mind readers out there?

🤯 They mention at the end that the marriage wasn’t official until they destroyed the oath. Since they already settled Iceyln’s with Cailean, I’m assuming this is the oath for Sinjinn being engaged to someone at the Court of Nightmares.

🤯 This is a repeat, but Cailean is being written as a Horde Prince when he’s a protector from the Blood Kingdon in the FC Chronicles. Also, he’s ½ Incubus now (mom was succubus) which would make him ½ demon.

I liked this book, but I have some problems with it.

Warning HUGE-ASSED SPOILERS

1. There was way too much sex in place of a plot. At least 50% of the book is sex. After a while it gets tedious.

2. The hero's way of manipulating the heroine by saying cruel things to her so that she would be "more receptive" to going along with the hard choices she faced sucked. He did it all the time. He would be in love with her, treating her right, then after another sex scene he basically zips up and turns mean because he knows the heroine needs to do this or that and it would be "easier" for her if she were under the impression that he didn't want her. This was also seen and not appreciated in the previous book Claiming the Dragon King.

3. The majorly anti-climatic ending of the 2 seiries, 10 book big baddies - The Mages. I am not sure if they are "dead" or if the ending meant that they were held off for a while. According to this book the King of the Mages was with the army that was amassed and subsequently killed in a paragraph in the final chapter of the book. Are they done? Did the major enemies of the series just get killed off by being drowned in a frozen lake? I was left with more questions than resolution.

4. Characters or plot points brought up that read like they should be already known but haven't had a proper introduction. Unless you read all the books of all the different series - The Fae Chronicles, The Elite Guards, and Sleeping with Monsters - you miss out on a minor character's introduction.

I read " A Demon's Dark Embrace" only once when it came out. I think that this is the book that introduced "Erie" whom is written as being the only female druid. She is brought out in this book and again in another book in another series "Becoming His Monster", but there was no mention as to where she came from. Also, there is no hint as to where this character can be found. Erie is talked about like she has been around for ages and has had all kinds of back story.

Perhaps a memory refresher instead of treating the character like they have been in the series for many books would be helpful. This is seen in other books with other characters. Its like showing up for Thanksgiving and seeing a new face but being told they have been around for years, but since you never showed up to the Halloween party two years ago you missed meeting them for the first time. Also, plot points that seem like a reader should be aware of are brought up. Adam has been talked about a lot in the series, but he hasn't been around. He seems to be getting into all kinds of Shenanigans, but the readers are not privy to them.

Why is this book - or this series - called The Elite Guards when there is only one other book that is actually about "The Elite Guards". Claiming the Dragon King was about Ryder's sister, not an Elite Guard, and A Demon's Plaything is a part of an anthology and since I haven't read it I can only guess by the blurb that it is about characters never before mentioned in any of the other books.

Things I did like about this book..

The introduction of a new cast for a new possible series. Really looking forward to reading about the Seelie.

Another decent edition to the Fae Chronicles series this is about another of Ryder's brothers entering into an arranged marriage this time with the winter court. It's actually Cailean who is the groom but in a case of mistaken identity, the princess of the winter court Icelyn ends up the Prisoner of his brother Sinjinn when she attempts to thwart the upcoming nuptials targeting him after mistaking him for the groom.

The brothers have no idea of who she really is so Sinjinn now finds himself unwittingly mated to his brother's intended. There's also the problem of a blood oath that hasn't been fulfilled with Icelyn being with the incorrect sibling and a murderous father hotly in pursuit and he has Ill intentions towards his daughter.

This was action-packed and a real page-turner it's not a love triangle which I was pleased about not my favourite trope if I'm honest. It was super spicy and edge-of-your-seat stuff and included some delicious darker themes. We also get to catch up with plenty of regular familiar characters from the main series. This is a great read that I managed to devour in one sitting and as expected the writing was top-notch.

Amelia did it again! This spin off takes Sinjinn, Ryder's brother and a member of his Elite Guard off to the winter court. He is sent to collect the tithe or in this case the bride offering for his brother Cailen. Icelyn is a warrior princes, determined to thwart her father's plans to offer her up like some meek subservient gift to the horde that destroyed their family. Her mission to buy her freedom by capturing her intended crumbles when arrow finds the wrong prince. These two fierce warriors collide in an explosion of fire and ice that will leave you panting for more. While surmounting the obstacles of the tithe they learn who their true enemies are, and who has allowed the mages to infiltrate faery yet again. Don't miss this epic installment to the Elite Guard series, you won't be disappointed! 🔥❄🔥❄🔥❄🔥

Another great story in the world of The Fae Chronicles! Loved Sinjinn and Icelyn’s story!

Amelia has a knack for writing strong female leads and she didn’t disappoint with Icelyn! I found Icelyn’s back story to be horrific and heartbreaking and loved that she found strength within herself to pull herself up and to never stop fighting for what she believes in.

Sinjinn...I’ve loved Sinjinn since the beginning of The Fae Chronicles and I was glad to see how his story unfolded.

It was exciting to see a new cast of characters introduced, as Asher and is many brothers\siblings made their appearance. I can’t wait to read more about Asher!

I am anxiously awaiting the next book!

Meh.

Not one of Hutchins' better works. Her characters and her storytelling are the best things in her books and The Winter Court had more sex than any plot or character development. The plot, when it did exist, was unoriginal and chaotic and sadly not that interesting.

I recommend her Fae Chronicles, which I loved, and even her Playing With Monsters series which I love/hate.

This book is a step up from soft core porn... with a twist.....
I mean, there is so much of the sex between these supposed enemies which, I must say was way too obvious from the get go. Major reasons why I disliked it this much:
1. I avoided reading blurbs and excerpts so I would go in fresh without any idea of what would unfold and yet, from the first chapter, I knew Cailean wasn't going to be the one for this princess.
2. Aside from Olivia, all the female characters are alpha females, who always clash grandly with their alpha mates, who inspite of wanting to be in control can't help but fall madly in love with the challenging Alphaness in the females? Highly unrealistic that all the brothers, regardless of their different mothers all prefer the same kind of woman characteristically speaking. And all of them, initially wouldn't have minded being with one of their brothers' mates.
It's really getting old. Same story at the heart of it, just different faces and geographic areas.
3. More sex than the story of how Sinjinn and Ice actually fall in love. I know all of Amelia's stories have sex in them but this one had way too much I had to flip through them and get to the actual story and started wondering if at all there was one....
4. Meet the new Seelie/Unseelie King Asher, who, speaks just like Ryder and his brothers ".... I will fuck you over ... I'm a selfish asshole..." yada fucking yada #Yawn. Why are all these males the same fundamentally? I mean aside from their origins their characters at the core are the same! It's BORING!!!!
5. How is it that, again, all the females have fathers that ditched them? I mean, this is an ENTIRE universe, TWO worlds actually and yet, wait for it... every female no matter the realm had her own people toss her to the wolves, daddy abandoned her, mistreated her Blah blah freaking blah #Major_YAWN. Again, BORING!!!
6. The twisted way all the females finally cave for their alpha males ... "I'm in control, no man can control me... but wait, he's all cave manly killing any other man who dares touch me so I'm in love with him, he can boss me around sometimes... I'll throw a tantrum say I don't like it but when he touches me I'm putty in his hands."
REALLY??!!!
For once I'd love to see a real dominatrix with a submissive partner, just to add a DIFFERENT flavour to this now boring cocktail of identical alpha males and females.

7.War zone or not, not everyone ponies up and becomes a warrior, how about those kinds of people? Are their stories not worth salt? Are such characters not worth being part of this Fae universe?
I've been a devout follower but after Seducing destiny I'm getting more and more dissatisfied and disappointed.
Perhaps I've outgrown this series too.....
It's almost a decade after all... it's bound to happen I suppose.

Things I liked....
1. The introduction of Asher, just having a new character was also kinda nice in spite of me not really liking his similarities to his half brothers.
2. Sebastian helping Ice in the cells... not all mages are evil yay..
3. Frost showing some backbone when she dared to sneak into the cells and give Ice some food. It's always nice when the seemingly spineless show some bravado.

And...well I honestly can't think of anything else that I liked.

Note: This is the third book in the Elite Guard series and 13th overall book within the Fae Chronicles universe. This book should be read after Demon’s Plaything (The Elite Guards #2.5)

🔥❄️🔥❄️🔥❄️

Holy fire and ice!

Icelyn is not your typical Winter Court Princess - she wants to be in charge of her own fate.

So when Horde Princes Sinjinn, Cailean and others travel to the Court to collect Icelyn as a tithe to the Horde - as Cailean’s bride - Icelyn decides she has something else in mind. She wants vengeance for what the old Horde king did when he destroyEd her family.

To protect itself, the Winter Court changes locations often within the permafrost. It’s a harsh, brutal existence for any not native to the Court, which puts the Princes and company in a foul temper when they have a hard time finding it.

But when Icelyn looses an iron-tipped arrow into Sinjinn and takes him prisoner, the tables are turned, because Icelyn isn’t keen to be any Prince’s plaything. The tides are turned yet again when Sinjinn and his wolf claim Icelyn and they return to the Horde stronghold, now with Icelyn as prisoner.

Now Icelyn is bound to marry Cailean, Sinjinn has claimed her as Mate, and another war is brewing right outside the gates.

This was a winter wonderland adventure ride through the harsh terrain of the Winter Court! Icelyn and Sinjinn are pretty much Fated mates, despite the fact she stuck him with an iron arrow, thinking he was her intended Cailean.

The parts where Sinjinn gets possessive when others, including her intended Cailean, fight over Icelyn, are hilarious. Poor Ryder, as king, must adhere to the blood oath on pain on death, but also knows a wolf mates once, for life.

And what a great addition Icelyn is to the growing female presence within the Horde!

Wonderfully and sinfully delicious.

No spoilers for this book but mild spoilers for the Fae Chronicles.

This story was a little confusing to begin with.
Sinjinn has always felt like a background character in the Fae Chronicles, so I really enjoyed reading his story.

If anything, this book has only made me want a book for Zahruk even more - he is clearly the most dominant out of the Elite - and I think he would even go toe to toe with Ryder.

I wonder who his mother was?

Oh and hi Asher - like, there has to be MORE Asher right?!

I loved this book.there is all kinds of feelings. Was well done and the twists and turns made it suspense. When you though al lwas going to be alright some more horrible happened. Omg so much pain and sadness but in the end all went fine
The description of the scenario was like we were there so clear on our minds that we can see it and live ..... like a movie. Really recommend to someone who wants to embark on a journey and forget reality

Fantastic series

I absolutely loved this book. It's dark and kinda of twisted definitely not your typical PNR that's for sure. I mean they were some parts I wanted to punch Sinjinn in the balls and say MAN UP!!! I also felt like Icelyn was way too forgiving she need to make Sinjinn grovel a little for his douchey way but then again that just me. Overall a enjoyable and entertaining read looking forward to seeing what else is in store for the series.

Snow never looked this mighty!

Amelia’s done it again. Fantastic read where the princess isn’t prissy. A lady who knows her court and her enemy. Only, the enemy surprises her to be more then she expected. A strong female lead who goes through horrible times and finds comfort in the most unlikely person. It’s not a fairytale, more like a crazy roller coaster ride with emotions and heartstrings pulled.

“I’m not worth fighting for.” “You’re wrong; you’re worth killing for, Icelyn. That’s what scares me the most.”

You know how sometimes you just want to read a book with drama, steam and action? Well this will satisfy that craving!

The drama? What would you do if the woman you mated with and fell in love with was actually supposed to be betrothed to your brother? And not only that, turns out she’s the heir of a court that supposed to make her betrothed to a entirely different person! Haha yes it was the perfect dose of drama.

I actually liked Icelyn and I LOVED Sinjinn. It’s hard to not like one of Ryder’s brothers at this point. This book was great and kept me on the edge of my seat from the 60% through mark until the end of the book!

4/5 🌟’s

Great read!

As always, this was a great addition to Amelia’s series. Well written and the book flows nicely.
It was so cool and interesting to learn about Sinjinn and also see Icelyn and her powers. Her story was intriguing and added a lot to their story. The book, their journey keeps you interested throughout.
We get to meet Asher and his group in this book and I like him! I loved how he helped Icelyn.
I’m a little bothered by these oaths Ryder is making for his brothers, only bc this one caused big problems.
I love how we get to see other characters in these books. They are all fantastic and I cannot wait for more.

I'm a HUGE fan of Ameila's work and jump to read everything she publishes and this was no exception.
In order to keep up with the events of the overall story line starting with Fighting Destiny then you cannot not read this book but I do have to say this was the first one I found myself skimming pages or just thinking the plot was pretty much the same as A Demon's Plaything. Though I found A Demon's Plaything much better than The Winter Court. Don't get me wrong, I loved the character of Icelyn and found her a great addition to the girl squad and found the book was a bit funnier near the end once Ryder, Synthia, and the rest of the gang were involved but the quantity of sex scenes and the whole "your father sucked so you do too" scenerio is getting tired. Also wasn't a fan of Sinnjinn, but would love to learn more about Cailean, and Zahruk is always a fan-favorite!! Cailean seems like he had more to him that would be great to explore and he didn't come off as the totally a-hole alpha male right off the bat which did make you want to like him more cause you know he has that "dark" side to him.
Though I do have to say the ending did have me hyped up for the "great battle" to come!!! We also got a few little bits that we got left hanging on in Becoming His Monster.
