As part of the discovery of cognitive science, teachers are waking up to the powers of dual coding - combining words with visuals in your teaching. But cognitive scientists aren't graphic designers, and so their books don't show teachers how to be competent in producing effective visuals. Until now. Dual Coding With Teachers is a truly groundbreaking educational book. No other book has been designed with both cognitive science and graphic principles in mind. Every page contains diagrams, infographics, illustrations and graphic organisers. It has been designed to cater for both the busy teacher in a rush, as well as the research-hungry colleague. Over 35 teachers, teacher developers, psychologists and information designers are profiled, each with a double-page spread, highlighting their dual coding practice.
This book gave me a useable framework for thinking about visuals. And I can give this book the highest praise possible, it will change my teaching. Through reading it, I decided to buy an app and try my hand at creating my own diagrams (instead of spending ages searching for a workable one on the internet). I am sure it will be a rough start (I’m no artist) but I will refer to the book for pointers and give it a go.
A really clear guide of how to practically use Dual coding theory to help learners - or even just to ensure you do not confuse the general public by talking over unrelated image... Interesting layout for a book, landscape and using dual coding itself throughout. The book basically does the 4 W's of the theory from what through to specific uses. There are also connections to each of the suggested techniques and further reading which can be undertaken in these areas. If you are wanting to use Dual Coding in teaching, this is a pretty good place to start!
Was really looking forward to reading this as reviews were excellent. I found it interesting and instructional but a little repetitive. As someone who likes to explain using drawing anyway, I took away around 5 key new points / ideas which I intend to use and I will definitely be evaluating the clarity of my resources overall. I particularly liked the examples from teachers and think that a nice follow-on would be more practical ideas, organised by subject. Overall helpful and easy to read.
