WOW! I could 't out this book down. It kept me on the edge of my seat. Please tell me there is another book that continues this story. I loved this book.
Wow, No you can't just stop there!!! I am only going to do a short review because I am off to start listening to the next book. As you probably can tell I really enjoyed this book, it is not my normal choice of listening material but the blurb sounded interesting and once I got past the tears I was hooked. It is a slow build up to the conclusion but what a build up it is. I listened to it all in one sitting as I wanted to find out what was happening next. I liked the main character and the author has a way of writing that had me feeling the emotions along with her, as well as the suspense and mystery. To lose someone is hard for anyone but when it is a thirteen year old girl and the person to die is her sister it is especially hard. When she withdrawals into herself her parents do the right thing by sending her to a shrink. But how can she tell the shrink her dead sister is writing to her when she doesn't believe it herself? Her dead sister's treasured dairy soon starts turning into a waking nightmare when previously blanks pages start turning up shaky handwriting that belong to her sister. With her two best friends Jacqueline must peace together the few clues her sister is leaving her to try and find out what her sister is so desperate to tell her that she is willing to let everyone believe her little sister has gone mad. I really liked the narrator and found her emotional voice tugging at the heart strings. In was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
The story begins dark. Neighbors of Jacky lose a teenage son to a fire. Jacky had been close to Chace and mourned his death. A few years later, at age twelve, Jacky's sister passes away in her bed. Her sister, Sandra, had complained of a stomach ache days before. Jacky feels surrounded by death. Jacky misses her sister and hangs out in her room. She finds her sister's diary. Once she opens the book, Jacky's life changes. Words appear on the blank pages. Her sister reaches out to her through her journal. Jacky's parents send her to a therapist to deal with her grief. However, the messages from her sister turn sinister. Sandra insists someone murdered her. Jacky is determined to help her solve the murder. This is an interesting take on a murder mystery. I read it in one sitting. I had to see who was the murderer. Surprises are in store for the reader.
Why why WHY does this book have over 4 stars on this site?
This book needs some serious editing. It reads like a first draft and is riddled with typos. The main character's name is misspelled twice. The word diary is misspelled as dairy multiple times.
The dialogue is super awkward, the plot is a mess. I would have DNF'd this if it wasn't for book club.
Fantastic book for young readers and the young at heart. The main character, Jacky is relatable for today's young reader. She is a little dark, witty and sarcastic but with an undertone of kindness that makes her a great role model. The story has great twists and turns and leaves you waiting for book two at the conclusion. I smell a book series here. Grisham meets Ghostbusters and a Nancy Drew for the modern age.
Jacqueline finds herself dealing with death much more intimately than most her age would ever be expected to do. First, it’s her childhood best friend, Chase who passes in a mysterious fire, and now it is her older sister, Sandra who is discovered dead in her bed. Family rifts and accusations follow her throughout the book until she discovers her sister’s death was much more than an illness … so much more!
Curtis Maynard develops the story vividly and realistically through dialog, character development, and plot twists. The author is meticulous in details, leaving nothing to chance. Every movement of each character is carefully choreographed to make the story realistic and accurate. The plot twists and supernatural occurrences resonate with many because of the simplistic approach used in the storyline. Maynard expertly communicated the story, emotions, and character relationships. I had a difficult time stopping the book until I was free to listen again. Maynard does not scratch the top of the story, but rather takes the listener deeper and reveals a much darker story. I enjoyed listening to the book and hearing the plot and twists evolve with each passing second. The cliff hanger at the end was a bit of a shock and well done but it makes me need to hear the 2nd book now.
The narrator, Jess Combs, performs the story with just the right amount of emotion. Her performance engages the listener to vividly see the book and each step of the mystery until the end. Her voice for the story was very well done – one would not believe she wasn’t 14 or 15 years of age!
There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook.
I highly recommend this book! A definite must read.
First person narrative during the first part of the book, which is well done; very descriptive writing.
Very well written. Rarely, if ever, have I listened to a full audiobook at one sitting (this is only 5 hours long, so that wasn't difficult), but this book had me enthralled from the start. Correction. The audio files I received are in two parts, each just over 5 hours.
I'm always reluctant to actually expose the plot of books I review. I personally dislike being spoiled with what is going to happen. Jaclyn's sister, Sandra, dies, and the family has to cope. The book is told from Jaclyn's point of view throughout as she tries to deal with the loss and her feelings.
It turns out that Sandra did not die a natural death. Jackie and her friends are drawn into looking for evidence of the events surrounding her death, leading to some very surprising twists. Part 2 of the book is told in the third person.
This is an excellent book. As I said, very well written and very well narrated.
This novel is part murder mystery, coming of age, paranormal with characters that are believable. A group of tweens are out to help solve the murder of one of their older sister. The premise is good with the youngsters helping the police instead of doing it all themselves. The end has a cliffhanger.
This held my interest from start to finish. Now listening to the second book.
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed.

OHH… I LIKE THIS ONE! What a well-paced murder mystery with just enough paranormal stuff to keep you quickly turning every page. And that the narrative is based around a girl who is in the challenging years of tween to teen makes it even more intriguing. At the end of the book, besides not knowing who the murderer is, I am left wondering what color the diary is – blue or rose (love the cover)!
