I read the series mostly because of the (grim) world building and entertaining and/or interesting side characters, and in that regards this volume doesn't disappoint. It comes with some action for action sake, most notably the first 20 pages, and Tatsuya remains (purposely) a bit of a boring main character whose supposed weaknesses never really come into play in the story. Nothing new.

The main antagonist of the story is interesting, and the addition of the parasites at least on the Japanese side of the story adds some solid drama. It is the American side that I feel it is irritating. There is no need for a mind control reason to make the USNA the enemy of Tatsuya since the seeds for that were there anyway, so why remove agency only to bring back an already dealt with thing from the past? It feels more like the only reason the parasites are here is to provide a somewhat believable threat to Tatsuya which is a lost cause anyway.

Finally, for a non-numbered arc title I would expected a more finished arc, but it is anything but finished. It is a great start of an arc, and there is no real cliff hanger ending, but nothing is resolved.

Still, it fitted expectations, a solid addition to the series and a good read.

Yay Lina is back! The fights against Minoru were always very entertaining to read. I must say, though, that the whole parasyte thing is getting really old… I wonder who Tatsuya is developing strategic magic for?
