Rate this book

A Warhammer 40,000 story

Khârn the Betrayer leads an assault on a Slaanesh temple as internecine war rages between the servants of Chaos. But has he met his match in the insidious servants of the god of excess?

READ IT BECAUSE
This classic story by William King gets into Khârn's head and shows how he gets swept up in the tide of slaughter – and just why he is the Blood God's favoured son.

THE STORY
Of all the enemies that the Berzerkers of Khorne wage war against in the 41st Millennium, none are so hated by their blood-soaked god as the servants of his rival, Slaanesh. As Khârn, champion of the Blood God and renowned across the galaxy as 'the Betrayer', leads an assault on the Slaaneshi Temple of Superlative Indulgence, he knows his lord's blessing is with him – but will the insidious wiles of the servants of the god of excess prove a match for the Betrayer's fury?

I read this after reading a tumblr post about it. My god, James Workshop, just let your authors write 40k erotica, it will be okay.

This line had me cackling: "The insinuating voice drove Khârn’s fury from him and left him feeling tired and spent."

Oh word??? You're telling me the Slaanesh priest did that? Love that for Khârn.

As well as having a pun-tastic title this is a bloody, all-action story showing Khârn where he’s most comfortable – in the thick of the fighting, claiming skulls for Khorne. It’s twenty years old (first published in White Dwarf issue 231 - March ‘99) and definitely a story of its time, but if you can get past the older style of storytelling it’s actually quite an entertaining story. It’s not complex or nuanced, but it’s good fun.

A hoot of a short. Gore, slashing madness set against the backdrop of a demonic faction clash. You'll find yourself more and more inclined to be lulled into a sense of complacency as Kharn makes work of opposing legions, to the beat of the warp's pulse.

2-stars for the writing, but it was having so much fun with the setting and inherent goofiness of 40K Chaos that it was an enjoyable read and worth a little extra. GW needs to let its writers cut a little looser like this and play around more.
