This is the other book mentioned in my review of Dolley Madison Saves George Washington, the less-damp dampened book. So, like that book, I read this in the process of blow-drying it out, rather than because I specifically chose to read it.

The "song" reminds me of Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?, in that the first part of each rhyme is just rhymed with onomatopoeia. It's probably good if properly "sung" to a younger reader, but it feels a bit empty, just reading it. I can't really gauge that well, since I don't have a younger reader to sing to and get their verdict.

The art is lovely, though.

Experience a storm that starts as a little rain and then increases until it knocks out the power. What do you do with no power? Sing, play games, eat popcorn, take a nap. You wake up and the storm is over.

Storm Song is a picturebook written by Nancy Viau and Illustrated by Gynux. This book explores the sounds and sights of a storm. Children and their dog are safe in a warm, loving home as they witness a rainy, windy day. Large and colorful use of pictures and words come together to capture the nature of a storm that might seem exciting or scary to younger children.

I think that Storm Song does a wonderful job of capturing a stormy day. The noise and sights, combined with the idea of being trapped inside for a day can make any child scared, frustrated, or restless. This story addresses all of these issues in a way that is fun and in a way that makes young readers more aware of the rhythm and logic of the words chosen. A great book choice for beginning readers looking to read to you for a change.

I recommend Storm Song for school, personal, and public library collections. The illustrations and text come together perfectly and can start a number of discussions with young readers. Conversations about storms, boredom, rainy days, and nature in general. It could certainly sooth the fears of a young child facing their first storms.

Synopsis: "Thunder claps outside the door—Boom. Boom. Bang! Rumble, rap, roar!
Follow the beginning, middle, and end of thunderstorm with children and their dog who find comfort in a cozy home filled with fun and love. With lyrical text and vibrant illustration, STORM SONG captures the essence of a rainy day from that first whisk of a wet leaf to the final spit of a single raindrop."

My Review: This is a great book to lessen any fears of storms. It allows for the introduction of the noises and things that could happen during the storm and that it will all come to an end. I happened to pick the perfect night to read this book as we ended up with a big storm and Munchkin told me it was just the storm noises and he didn't have any fear the entire night.

Nancy Viau has written a short (that's very definitely) read-aloud book that Gynux has illustrated with whimsically elegance. But Storm Song is yet another visually exceptional book with rhyming text that doesn't have enough literary (I know, it's for young kids) substance to remember and to grow with. However, it's also cool that anyone who has or hasn't read the words in the book could tell the story to themselves simply by paging through and examining illustrations. When Storm Song is out in paperback, it would be a nice volume for your kids' or grandkids' bookshelves, but it's not the type of keeper that's worth $12.99 US for hardbound.

This book is beautifully crafted. Bursting with onomatopoeic fun this book makes a great read aloud. As a bonus, it features diversity in it's characters features, without making diversity the driving force of the book. This is a simple story about children, a storm and the mom who eases them through it.

Storm Strong is about 3 young kids experiencing a thunderstorm and their mother who provides a bit of fun inside the house before everyone falls asleep and the storm passes. It has beautiful illustrations by Gynux but that is about all I liked about it. I suppose it can teach kids about sounds and alliteration, bit overall I found the story lacking and boring.

This is a great book for ECE level readers who are encountering some of their first big rainstorms. It is full of opportunities for phonologic awareness, print awareness, and print motivation. The pictures are large and colorful. Excellent for very young readers.

6 year old granddaughter likes it

Liked reading all the words for the different noises that are made during a storm.

Likes to read, and be read to and helps not be afraid of noises during a storm.

It's cute, but not great

The story is very cryptic, but the pictures are cute. My daughter liked the dog jumping in puddles at the end, but couldn't care less about the rest.
