Star Shadow #1

Terrible Things

Rate this book
When Caleb Chance walked out in Detroit five years ago, leaving his band, millions of his fans and his lover behind, Leo knew he could never forgive.

Some things, no matter what the cause, are unforgivable.

But Leo never expected Caleb to show up again, clean and sober and wanting to get their band, Star Shadow, back together. He definitely never expected to agree to Caleb’s plan.

He never expected to confront the love of his life again—or the disaster of his past, the hopelessness of his future, and every terrible thing he’s been carrying inside him.

But maybe some things aren’t so terrible after all.

I'm calling it...dnf @ 60%

I was sure it was a mood thing or the slump knocking at my door but it's not. The story is just not working for me. I'm bored and find my mind wandering.

The story is told only from Leo's point of view. When Caleb comes back, I found their reunion anticlimactic. The very slowwwwww rebuilding of their relationship has me at a loss for patience. So, I'm done.

I cried. Like an actual tear rolling down my face cried, that doesn't happen often to me but this book, oh my word this book - so many feels!

It's difficult to review it without spoiling the journey so I'll just say it's nothing like your usual "rock god/musicians" romance, it's sort of just out of young adult/new adult feel in tone with characters in their mid 20s but sometimes sounding a bit younger due to the emotional hit they all took five years earlier - and don't get me wrong, it completely works and feels utterly relatable.

Leo and Caleb, what a pair. There are a couple of what are essentially flashbacks to the first time they met and then the final couple of days five years earlier before everything imploded, and they work to bring some serious depth to the narrative.

This book was utterly absorbing to me, I was drawn deeply into it and was invested 100% in the lives of this former boy band and the journey each had to take to be able to move on into a new future.

There's great exploration of the pressures of a life in the public gaze, the lengths those behind the scenes are willing to go to when they have a cash generator on tap as it were, and my heart broke for Leo and Caleb many times when reading.

This is a serious slow burn, but please don't be put off by that because, believe me, the eventual payout is more than worth it.

Now, Benji and Diago next please Beth yes? (And Max and Felix right after!)

Angsty Second Chance

🎵Narrated by: Kirt Graves

So, I had previously listened to Kirt Graves on Neve Wilder’s Try Me and wrote him off because I hated the way he made Chet sound. However, I decided to start listening to narrators I had written off in hopes it was just the book that had been the issue and in this case it was. I have read Try Me so many times that no narrator was going to match what was in my mind and I’m really glad I tried Kirt again because what an angsty ride he took me on. Trying to cook dinner while tearing up is a tad dangerous lemme tell you. It was the onions I swear! 😂

So, Leo and Caleb met in high school, fell in love and together with their friends formed the boyband Star Shadow and became famous. They had the lives they’d always dreamed of, yet it came with conditions that ultimately broke up the band and their relationship. 5 years later Caleb returns to town and while Leo wants nothing to do with the man who broke his heart, the music contract they signed years ago is still in effect and the band has to get back together or face legal trouble. But Leo doesn’t know how to do that. How can he be around his ex 24/7 who disappeared without a word and stayed away for 5 years? Leo is so incredibly angry at Caleb but Leo has always loved Caleb, doesn’t know how to not love Caleb, but he doesn’t like him right now and can’t forgive him for the past yet despite how much he can tell Caleb has changed for the better thus making this an angsty read. I completely understood why Leo couldn’t forgive Caleb for the majority of the book because I’m the Caleb in this scenario and know the vast number of things I did to others that I needed to atone for after getting sober. Some were definitely easier than others and thankfully I never had a situation like this because all my relationships back then were train wrecks due to being one myself but it did take a long time for even close family members to trust me. 😕

This is a slowwww fucking burn and I enjoyed the hell out of it because it’s my favorite fucking trope. I love books where they are together when they are younger but something happens and they reunite after a few years apart and get a second chance. This one is a hard fought second chance and they don’t just give into each other right away which is why it’s such a slow burn because they actually try to fix their problems before getting physical and it made this book special. I didn’t mind not having sex scenes until chapter 18 of 20 because the connection between them was beautiful and it made the unresolved sexual tension between them so incredibly divine. By the time the physical part came into it they had gotten to know each other again and solidified their connection and I just loved how real it felt. As much as I love sex scenes in my books, this one didn’t need them because their journey from exes to everything was so enjoyable for me. That being said, once they appeared, I loved them especially because by then it wasn’t just meaningless sex but another expression of their love for one another. It’s just been such a long time since I’ve read a book like this and loved it and I think Kirt Graves’ voice had a lot to do with that because of the emotion put into Leo’s voice. The entire book is from Leo’s POV and while I usually prefer dual, it just worked and I didn’t feel like I missed anything not having Caleb’s. There was a desperation throughout this book, a longing and yearning I could feel from not just Caleb and Leo but other members of the band that made me interested in listening to more books in this series especially if they are narrated by Kirt. Despite all the angst I really enjoyed listening to this book and I can’t remember the last time I read two 5 star books back to back. (That review will be up later) 💗

Not a book without faults but I loved it anyway. A tad repetitive at times (I think another round of editing and some tightening up would have benefited the story) and I could have used a little more steam but so.many.FEELS. The pacing was excellent too. Recommended for fans of second chance romance. The trope was executed pretty much perfectly here.

I am beginning to think that editing for pace is this author's Kryptonite.

Once again, this book was approx. 100 pages longer than it needed to be. Because of that, a book that started with an emotional gut punch and me right there with the characters emotionally in the opening chapters, dragged along on the same emotional note for about 70% of the book and ended up faaaaaaar exceeding my patience for it. By the time the characters fixed their shit, I barely cared anymore.

I liked the characters and the 1D fanfic of it all, but good god, woman! You are not writing War & Peace; editing is GOOD.

Un libro de músicos de una banda de rock centrado en sentimientos y relaciones. Realmente romántico, aunque necesita un mejor editado, la autora repite mucho las mismas expresiones e ideas. Pero, recomendable, muy agradable de leer.

Honestly, I should have read the story blurb more carefully since I really don't care for boy- band stories no matter what genera they may be...so I'm going to blame myself for not paying more attention...plus I never just leave a book, in any form, unfinished...and I've always like the narrator, Kirt Graves...who did a fantastic job with all the voices. Not to mention that I know writing something, big or small for publication is anything but simple. This author had to have put a great deal of time and effort into producing it.

I found the characters all very difficult to feel anything for or to choose one to root for. If you are more than 12-years old you will see that all the problems, they had had as a band and with one another in the past was their own darn faults. The story is, as the blurb stated, mostly about addiction, love, and second chances. The chemistry between Leo and Caleb was absolutely undeniable. I was happy to see that they got their "Happy Ever After"....5-years is a heck of a long time to wait for it. If you happen to be a fan of boy-band stories that are loaded with angst, then you will certainly like this one.

Overall: Most of you know that 75% or more of my reading is M/M Romances and I have to say that this one was very good on that score...that is, when Leo and Caleb finally got their heads out of the sand and actually had an adult conversation with one another. It took them a bit too long... but better late than never. I didn't hate the story...I think Caleb was my "something" that I was searching for to really bring the story to life...I wish it had been sooner. It just boils down to the truth that this one just wasn't for me.

I am afraid I am not a very forgiving person, especially in certain situations. Which I guess it was the main reason I couldn't connect with the characters.

I liked the idea this book gave and I was sure I was going to love it. It didn't happen that way, sadly. I liked everyone but Caleb and Leo. The first came back expecting, even if deep inside, to get everything back after his screwed up. The latter acted like he was right all the time, I understand he was hurt and I hate the forgive-and-forget but too much self-pity got on my nerves.

Even if their stories were confusing sometimes, I enjoyed knowing more about the other characters. I also liked (not at first) they were there for the main characters.

Their journey is was slow, angsty, very rocky but at least they got each other in the end so overall, it was a nice read.

There’s not much that’s better than trying a new-to-me author and being thrilled by what you just got to read. Rock star/musician stories are a favorite and Beth Bolden has penned a fresh, original theme in the sub-genre. Leo and Caleb were teen lovers, each other’s firsts for everything, including the experience of becoming a famous boy-band along with their friends. They were deeply in love but unprepared for the pressures of fame and the demands of the industry. The story is told entirely from Leo’s viewpoint with a few flashbacks added to show the beginning and the crushing end of their early relationship. Max, Diego and Benji are the other band members and friends who provide a buffer and lend support for Leo when Caleb returns and the band re-forms.

The narrative flows wonderfully as they all work to regain their dynamic as a band. There is angst and drama but it’s reasonable and logical, not overblown. Both Leo and Caleb are still quite young, 25 and 26 so it made it easy to understand the forces that drove Caleb, a 19 year old boy, to nearly destroy himself. The long, long, slow burn is as frustrating to the characters as it was to me as the reader but it fit the pace that was needed as Leo and Caleb worked to find a new balance. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. Details about Diego, Benji, Max and Leo’s brother Felix are mixed faultlessly into the plot as couples for the future sequels and driving my interest in reading them. If you enjoy musicians and stardom novels, this is a great one to pick up.

A complimentary audio was provided in exchange for an honest review.

I selected this because it was narrated by Kirt Graves. This is a new to me author and the blurb plus Kurt told me to go for it.

The was a 3 star story for me. The pacing was extremely slow and the timeline, for me, didn't work. I would have preferred a present day prologue followed by a chronological story showing the history of Leo and Caleb and their romance then downfall. Instead time jumped around and I was not able to connect with the characters.

On a brighter note I will say when I was in to the story I was interested to see how they reacted to each other and liked the flashbacks to happier times. They really seemed to love each other but were not able to hold on to it the first time.

Kirt as always did an amazing job and I am doubly glad I listened to this because I was able to meet Kirt the other day and he is totally cool! 4.5 stars for Kirt. 😊

Terrible Things was an interesting story. While I was reading it, the story felt familiar to me and realized that it was very similar to a true story, with some different twists and turns. Then I told myself that, as long as it wasn't a biography and there is an HEA, I was good with that.

I appreciated getting to know all the members of Star Shadow throughout the story. Unfortunately, I felt that some of the sub-characters brought the story down and made it a little bit confusing. They were all instrumental to the story but did take away from the main characters. This was the only downer in the story. I loved Caleb and Leo, Caleb's new philosophy on love and life was was totally on point. Leo's frustration with him and his feelings were absolutely justified. Once Leo truly looked inside himself, questioned Caleb's reasoning and truly saw why he walked away and understood it, you knew that all would be forgiven and that they could have a future together. It was an interesting journey for both of them.

Other than being confused by the sub-stories, I enjoyed the premise of the story. I enjoyed the journey with Leo and Caleb but could have done without the back-ground drama. I understand that it's probably there to set up future stories but, I felt that it took away from the main characters. And, believe me, there was enough drama between the two of them to not include the other characters drama.

Chase and Leo are soulmates, but 5 years ago Chase disappeared without a trace.

When he comes back, will Leo be able to forgive him and move on?

I really enjoyed this this. I like that there were little interlude chapters that gave the background story without resorting to flashbacks.

I like that they took things slowly, essentially starting over, getting to know each other again before jumping back into a relationship.

This was one angsty ride. And I loved it. Angst is not usually my thing but Beth Bolden wrote angst in the right way. A fantastic slow burn, second chance romance. I could feel it in my bones. Told from Leo's point of view only I could feel everything he was feeling. And while I wanted him to put his foot down at times and just say no to both his band members and Caleb, there wouldn't be much of a book if he did. Maybe it was Kirt Graves fantastic narration that did it for me, but I really felt for both Leo and Caleb even though it took me a long time to warm up to Caleb.

2.5 - Let me just start out by saying I didn't like Caleb and found him to be a self centered douche. This book irritated me the whole way through. It does have a lot of the feels everyone else commented on, but I didn't see them as the good kind. This whole book seemed to be about how everyone can make Caleb happy especially Leo and at the expense of his own feelings. I kept waiting for Leo to standup for himself and win, but that never happened.

Leo thought Caleb was his soulmate and Caleb left that behind without saying goodbye for five years. That is going to take a toll on your self esteem and the put into doubt your ability to read people and feel like you can believe in yourself. Additionally it is going to fuel a fear of always being left by everyone around you. These things just seemed to be brushed aside to make Caleb happy.

This whole book has Leo getting steamrolled over and over his and having his feelings disregarded by his "friends". He says no, and everyone just rolls over him like his feelings don't matter. When you have panic attacks so sever that you can't breath it MATTERS. In the long run Leo is happy about other people not listening which makes it even harder to accept. I'm all for outside your comfort zone, but sometimes moving slower to take the sting out would be nice and no one did that for him.

Everyone bends over backwards to help Caleb cause he's been through so much, but what about Leo. Shoving his fingers down his ex's throat so he doesn't die of alcohol poisoning, cleaning up vomit and other bodily functions cause he's too out of it to do it himself. That is huge and I don't feel like anyone takes that into account.

Throughout the book it was always Leo doing everything for Caleb and I had a real problem with that since that was what he was doing when Caleb was in the throws of addiction. This book makes Leo look like a complete doormat. If Caleb doesn't get what he wants he just pushes him and his feelings around until he get what he wants. Leo does everything for Caleb to make him smile and ends up doing lots of things he doesn't want to do. This seemed like a horrible codependent unhealthy relationship. This book was told from only one MC's point of view (Leo) and perhaps that was where the problem lied for me.

I didn't get to see any sacrifices that Caleb made for him, but to me it didn't seem like there were ANY. I'm all for forgiveness, but it seemed like Caleb needed to do A LOT more giving and making up for things instead of taking what he wanted. What we get is Leo bending over backward at every opportunity to make Caleb happy and why? Leo didn't do anything wrong. Obviously sometimes soulmates come in crappy packages, but I just didn't like anything about Caleb. Leo could have done better.

I will never be able to listen to Coldplay again without thinking about Leo and Caleb’s story. Read this book and you will understand why.

I must admit that the first few chapters of this book disappointed me. I didn’t like the fact that Caleb forced the group to reunite due to some kind of contractual clause and threat of legal action. I think this bordered extortion and the other band members bent too quickly to the request of Caleb. In addition to that only Leo seemed to be upset by the surprising return of his ex lover; his friends seemed to have issues playing and singing together just because they hadn’t done it for years and not because one of their band members had somehow betrayed them and they had lost the connection needed in order to sound like a group and not like separate individuals.

So yes it took me some time to grow fond of Caleb and I was very much a Leo supporter at the beginning. Probably because the book is written only from Leo’s POV and Caleb was always a little bit shy and hesitant to take control and make the first step, but it was difficult to understand Caleb’s point of view and you need to keep reading and letting the story build the emotional tension in order to appreciate Caleb’s character. Once Leo allows himself to be friend with Caleb again and to spend more time with his ex-lover, Caleb’s strength and determination finally shine and his character gains in emotional depth.

It is a slow-burn story, with a low heat level. Caleb and Leo might be always looking at each other, blushing and at some point flirting, but the hot side of their relationship explodes only after more than 87% of the book.

The side characters - like in all other Beth Bolden’s books - are very important for the development of the story and you may already guess who will be the couples of the next books in this series. I really hope Felix and Max get their book. I have the feeling that Benji and Diego’s story will have even more angst that Leo and Caleb’s.

My conclusion: This was a very nice read though it was at times tough. It was written in pure Beth Bolden style, focusing on the story and the feelings of the storytelling character. A second chance HEA that didn’t come easily but that proves that soulmates do exist and they may overcome the most difficult drawbacks life puts on their way, if they just trust each other and allow their love to govern their decisions.

I have to say that this book really got me in the feels. I wasn't sobbing uncontrollably, but I definitely had numerous times of tears leaking out of my eyes and a hurting heart.

Leo and Caleb were together for 4 years and were in a band together. Being forced to stay in the closet at the height of their fame caused Caleb to go into a downward spiral. He takes off and isn't seen for 5 years. Leo is devastated in a deep depression for the 5 years and pretty much gives up music. Caleb all of a sudden shows back up wanting the band to play together again. Leo and the band are angry, but they don't have much of an option according to contracts.

Caleb is still madly in love with Leo, and Leo still has feelings (as much as he wishes he didn't) for Caleb. We learn about why Caleb left and how he has tried to turn his life around. Just when you think you hate Caleb for making Leo hurt so much (and trust me...I cried for Leo), you start to feel for Caleb as well. The guys were in such a bad position and a downward spiral was inevitable.

Leo and Caleb getting back together was a very slow road. THANKFULLY! It wouldn't have been as good or real of a story if Leo and Caleb just jumped right back into everything and ignored the past. They worked through things. They communicated. They hurt. They loved. It was beautiful. Leo and Caleb really did have a soulmate type love story. I am glad to see this is a book 1 with Diego and Benji's story coming up next. There was a definite story there that I really want to see work out. I am also glad that I will be able to revisit with Leo and Caleb and see how they are doing together.

Too long. Too much cliched, unnecessary angst. A MC, Leo, who was so unlikable and such a complete and utter jerkoff to Caleb, the other MC. This book had almost 450 pages. And honestly, 250 of those pages contained so much over-describing of things, etc.
I just did not enjoy this one as much as I should have. And I'm not sure I'm going to proceed with the next book in this series. Apparently it's Diego and Benji's story. And I know I won't be able to stand the uber-angst of that one. This one was bad enough.
I will say this though, I adored Caleb. A lot. Leo though? Well, he can go suck a bag of rocks.

This is my first read by this author and it was pretty good, I’ve read some disappointing rockstar romances lately so I’ve really been hanging out for something with substance. I enjoyed the dramatic angsty storyline and the way things played out with the whole band/come back/tour thing but I didn’t feel much for the characters.

They didn’t have clear identities to me. Caleb at times is described as super sweet and lovely but then also legally forces everyone into reuniting in the first few chapters, the way he acts often doesn’t match how he is described, I never really felt him as a character. Similar with Leo. As an example, he is described as being so flamboyant that everyone in the music scene and the public would have known he was gay but then there isn’t evidence of him acting flamboyant at all that I noticed. In his speech, manner or his dress sense, as it is mentioned he lived in jeans and t-shirts and has to hunt down one of Caleb’s more glimmery shirts for a night out. Often little inconsistent things like that aren’t enough to bother me but I just didn’t get a solid feel for either character and didn’t find them to have a strong identity so I found myself drifting at times whilst reading this.

Overall though it was good to see them finally get their HEA and I’m interested in what book 2 has to offer.

I started out really loving this story and for the most part, I did enjoy it, but what didn’t work for me was the progression of Caleb and Leo’s rekindling love. It took way too long and by the time Leo and Caleb finally got back together, and Leo forgave Caleb, I was almost to the point of not caring anymore and was ready to throw in the towel. I was frustrated and aggravated with Leo by this point and wanted to tell Caleb to just walk away.

While I do wish Ms. Bolden had sped up the progression of them getting back together, once they did, they were explosive and hot together and the chemistry between them was electric

The story is well-written and I loved not only Leo and Caleb, but the secondary characters of their bandmates, Benji, Max and Diego as well as Leo’s brother, Felix. They were a great support system for each other and I’m really hoping this isn’t the last we’ve seen of them. Benji and Diego especially have a story I NEED to read and of course, I wouldn’t say no to Max and Felix’s story either. So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for more books surrounding the band Star Shadow.

Overall, while frustrating at times, this was still an enjoyable and recommendable read!

A second chance at love story that broke my heart. Leo and Caleb spent 4 years together starting as teenagers. Being part of a boyband with a management company that refused to acknowledge their relationship ultimately drove a wedge between the two until one day Caleb finally could not take it anymore. Now 5 years later Caleb shows back up in LA and asks Leo for something he does not know if he can provide. I loved every minute of this book and watching Leo and Caleb not only become friends again bit fall in love all over again. There are also side Characters and Bandmates that have their own love stories brewing and I can not wait for more from Beth Bolden.

I was a little nervous going into this book because I've been gutted by this author before and I wasn't wrong. Caleb and Leo were so explosive! I will admit that I wasn't sure I wanted Leo to forgive Caleb. It seemed like it would be too much. In the end, after I cried my tears right along with the characters, I feel like they got what they needed even if it took years. Remember, tears can be cleansing and a good book can make your soul sing. You get both of those things with this one.

Such an angsty second chance tale. There's quite an heavy emotional weight to this book and I loved that. The dark and complicated isn't shied away from. It's front and center and addressed and worked through. The couple, you feel their connection. You're not just told they have an unbreakable pull....you see it. It makes sense for them. I appreciate that what Caleb did, even though he had reasons, isn't brushed under the rug. Also appreciate that he's not endlessly punished for it either. The ground work is laid for the next couple of couples, and I'm interested based on the little hints and references in here.

DNF, though I skipped to the end. I wanted to and I really tried to like this book. I couldn't. I admit that I started it because I am a big fan of the audiobook narrator, Kirt Graves. But, even his skills couldn't save this book.

This is a second-chance romance trope + rock star trope done wrong. The author demonstrates in excruciatingly belabored detail that the two MCs had a toxic relationship and shouldn't be on the same continent, let alone be in a relationship. The vast majority of the text is just exposition about how miserable Leo is because of Caleb. It never ends: on and on and on we are told about Leo's misery with regard to Caleb. I didn't care about either of the two MCs and couldn't buy that they could salvage their toxic relationship. But somehow, we are to believe they lived HEA.

For a high-angst drama about rock stars, I think Amy Lane's Beneath the Stain is far better than this book.

Not my kind of book. I'm all for slow burn and second chances. But seriously, I didn't understand what was so special about Caleb and Leo. I don't know why Leo was so easily ready to give Caleb a new chance. There was no real reason for that beside the horniness between them. I didn't see the love between them. Nothing worth waiting for for 5 years. I skipped a lot and barely got through.

Still I was invested enough to not DNF. Barely but still. That's why I round up from 1.5 to 2.
