I just am so disappointed RN

Ranting review -

so it’s the second book and we are learning more about the political background, intrigues in court and how Fallon is trying to change his country by using Novi as a spearhead etc etc. but can I just say that I am super frustrated from start to finish of this book? Like to the point where I wanted to drop this series and never pick it up again?

First is the relationship between Novi and Fallon. It had become very repetitive and strung out to the point where I wanted to scream. Either stay with him and be sad or leave. Stop crying and stop feeling sad for yourself ALL THE TIME. I wanted to see a spark of Novi’s character from the first book who was snarky and stood up for herself not this broken shell in book two who bends her will to anyone with authority and doesn’t speak her mind. Yes we get that she spent a horrid amount of time in the temple but she has seen her mom die, she was kicked out of the place she grew up in to fend for herself, she had been working for a slumlord who treated her like garbage and had faced down the lords and ladies in the court that are mixed with DEMONS; this solitude should be a walk in the park at this point for her to deal with. But it just didn’t give her any backbone to grow as a character. I felt like it set her back. Hopefully in book three we find some of her old self coming back to make a debut.

Also the whole baby thing.. it was just impossible to imagine someone wanting to bring an innocent baby into this entire situation where Novi is literally surrounded by enemies at every turn. What type of person would put their child to go through what Novi had seen Fallon and Tristan go through? And have Laena as a grandparent? Nope, no way. Sure Novi loves Fallon but it was so hard to like her in this book when honestly she was using this could-be-pregnancy as a safeguard against being sent back to the temple. It was kinda inconceivable for me to understand her choosing this path because no one would want to bring a life in the world with the possibility that it would be taken away from them at any time. Idk it bugged the h*ll out of me how she thought she could protect this babe when she can’t even protect herself.

And the last biggest part I was heartbroken about was how absolutely SELFISH Novi was about leaving poor baby Kai. She abandoned him in that temple the first chance she got at freedom and we HEARD NOTHING ELSE about him from Novi in all the months she spent in Fallons bedroom trying to get knocked up. It was awful. And then she returns to the temple and has the audacity to say she missed him. GIRL YOU DIDN’T EVEN SAY ONE WORD ABOUT THE TREATMENT OF THESE CREATURES to Fallon in all the months you spent with him. How was Kai’s last words not burned in her memory of when he screamed out after trying to save her? Kai was a baby who literally cuddled her and helped her get through living at the temple by giving her images of freedom and she dropped him like it was nothing until she was sent back to the temple. I just felt like she used him the same way she uses Fallon and books, to escape reality in something or someone. Honestly at the end she probably didn’t rescue Kai either and left him at the temple again to think she died 😒 Novi doesn’t deserve Kai

So to say the least I wasn’t impressed at all with this book like I had been with the first one. I expected more out of our heroine however she didn’t do anything to help the humans find equal ground like she was gunning for in book 1. Like at the end of reading this I had to ask myself what was even Novi’s purpose in this book?

Loved this book. Not only was it a good work of fiction, with complex characters and a HEA love story, it was an excellent filler for the Annika Brisby series. Emigh Cannaday's writing is lovely as always!

I loved how it built up the world from the dark elve's side, and lets the reader get to know a bit about their politics and history. Also, Crown of Contempt continued the portal story arc from the other series, even though this series could be completely stand-alone.

Old villains play a small part, but new very interesting ones are also pulled into the story. I'm very curious how much these particular story arcs and characters will crossover into the other.

My favorite part was the end, of coarse. And the very last sentence in the epilogue! That part gave me a shit-eating grin! So excited for the next books!

I recieved an ARC and voluntarily have left an honest review.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author to give a voluntary honest review. This review contains only my own thoughts and opinions of this book. First and foremost, thank you Emigh Cannaday for the opportunity and generosity.

I do not like admitting this because it makes me feel kind of stupid, but reading Crown of Contempt made me feel a bit lost. It felt like there was a second book before this that I missed or something. I don’t mean that this book followed Prince of Persuasion poorly or anything, but the characters feelings, reactions, actions and just some general information in the book didn’t fully make sense to me. It constantly felt like I had missed something big and had to go back to make sure I hadn’t accidentally skipped a chapter.

It’s hard to explain what made me feel this way. I think the biggest issue was the jumps in time though. It didn’t leave a lot of room to the necessary details and development to take place and help me follow the story. From the moment Novi and Fallon was reunited it jumped from month to month recapping a lot. Suddenly they went from into each other, but reluctant to admit it, to heads over heels in love with each other. Then there was suddenly distance between them again and then, happiness and suddenly there is heartbreak and separation. I make it sound much sloppier than it was now, but my point is that since it jumped and recapped a lot, the bigger moments felt sudden and a bit out of place.

That’s not to say that the book was undeveloped or rushed. It developed a lot of things very well, like Navi’s miserable time at the temple of The chimeras, her relationship with Kai and also the intriguing yet mysterious characters that was Leana, the Prioress and even Tristan and Callie. I don’t believe the development or progress of the story was the main problem, but rather the focus on where the development should be. A lot of detail went into some important things but also smaller things, while the most exciting and compelling moments where brushed by. The entirety of Novi’s and Fallon’s relationship is beautiful and heartwarming, yet the impactful and intense moments were short and far between, if not missing, because of how much it jumped in time. What was a year for them was at most a month for me because of that and it was a bit out of nowhere when suddenly their deadline passed and they had to separate.

What made me even more confused was that Fallon did not keep to his promise to send her somewhere safe and that promise was not mentioned at all then, like it was completely forgotten. While I did enjoy the depth of despair and sorrow it brought out of them and made the later reunion the more sweeter, it also made me doubt his love for her since he let her go back to that miserable place when there was another option.

I am also a bit annoyed that I didn’t get to see the moment Novi and Fallon reunited after her “big change”. Considering how that was a big worry they both had since book one it was sure to be a really beautiful and toe curling moment. Instead the infamous jump in time made me miss it. Still, I can’t help but enjoy following their relationship and characters. They have their own unique charms and intrigue and I absolutely loved the last chapter so I am very much excited for the next book, whether it is Annika Brisby or Novi Navarro next.

After reading this book three times, I'm finally ready to review!

Before we go any further, let's get the fine print out of the way- I received a complimentary ARC of this book from the author for my voluntary and honest review. Okay, we may continue...

Emigh's writing is masterful and she has an incredible way of weaving a magical tale around you, reeling you in from the very first page, keeping you spellbound until the last, then holding your heart captive until the next book.

If you love an author that can make you imagine the story and feel like you're living it, and you love a bit of fantasy (with elves, vampires, witches, lycans, and humans, oh my!) plus some great love interests thrown in, I suggest you read Emigh's Annika Brisby series and Novi Navarro series (recommended reading order listed below).

~ Annika #1 The Flame and the Arrow
~ Annika #2 The Silver Thread
~ Annika #3 The Scarlet Tanager
~ Annika #4 The Darkest of Dreams
~ Novi  #1 Prince of Persuasion
~ Novi  #2 Crown of Contempt
~ Annika #5 Title TBA - Autumn 2019
~ Novi  #3 Title TBA - Winter 2019/2020

I love that in Crown of Contempt we get more insight into the past and actually see a different side of Queen Laena- hopefully in the next books we will find out exactly where she is from, who she is and why she has done such seemingly terrible things (I have a sneaking suspicion she is actually somehow an Estellian, working evil witchcraft for the greater good of both the empires, but that remains to be seen).

Fallon and Novi both go through so much heartache and turmoil in this book, and I found their emotional states and reactions to their circumstances to be really believable. I hated that Novi was treated so badly and that Fallon couldn't do anything to help (lest he be cast down from the Blackwood throne), but of course, like most great reads the characters needed some injustice to eventually triumph over, so no points deducted there.

Even though Kai didn't get much of a look-in this time, I can't wait to see what happens with with him in the next books- I think he's going to have a major role to play in uniting the people and really endearing them (even more) to Fallon and Novi.

My absolute favourite part of the book would have to be the very last line, it made me have a huge silly grin plastered on my face for ages...they don't know what they're in for, but I can tell you it's going to be fabulous!

Bring on the next books...

Wow! This was unexpected.

There is so much left to wonder about at the end. But things finally do seem to be looking up.

Although the ending is a bit of a deus ex machina, it didn’t come about as easily as all that. Not for anybody. It’s taken the hard work of a lot of people to get Fallon and Novi out of the tangle of danger and intrigue they have been caught in – if they are clear of it even yet.

Novi begins and almost ends, in the Temple of the Chimera, where she was sentenced for her supposed crimes at the end of the previous book. She has befriended the little chimera who hatched from the egg Fallon found on the chimera hunt. She has named him Kai. (Love Kai – I hope he gets free by the next book). And she is attempting to deal with everything.

Quite unexpectedly, King Balerin snaps out of the daze he has been in since news of Dillon’s death reached him a hundred years before. He threatens Fallon and reveals himself to be a mean, bloodthirsty bully. But he authorizes a brief reprieve for Novi. Fallon can have her back for a year to try to get her pregnant and prove he is capable of siring children.

So now, Novi and Fallon actually become lovers. But at the same time, Fallon is busy trying to establish some elected representation for the non-Nakki members of Ellunian society, including humans, werewolves, vampires, and people of witch descent. His busy schedule, the too many things they don’t want to tell each other, and the limited time table serve to push them away from each other, and it doesn’t happen for them. Eventually, they take her back to the Temple of the Chimera, and she is abused worse than ever before.

Meanwhile, we get some unsettling hints about Queen Laena. But what is it she is really up to? Why does she need a pet witch to keep her looking young? Aren’t the Nakki supposed to be nearly ageless? And what exactly is it that she is doing with and to Callie?

And what is the significance of all the dead humans that Fallon’s former werewolf guard, Halen, discovers once he leaves Fallon’s service and returns to the city guard (apparently sort of like the police)?

Thanks to the author for a free review copy. I also read part of this book on Kindle Unlimited.

I rarely give 5-star reviews to 2nd books in the series. In my experience, these books are fillers. There is no real plot progression—the characters flounder. But, in Crown of Contempt, none of this happened. I was happy to have my expectations blown away by this book.

I hated seeing Novi broken. She wasn’t the same person that she was before going into the temple. She still had a sharp tongue and a more intelligent mind. But her humor, which is what made me love her, wasn’t there.

I felt bad for Fallon. The stress that he was under came off the pages. He was trying to install a new government, save Novi, and fend off his mother. I was surprised that he didn’t snap sooner.

I felt bad for Callie, too. The things she was forced to do and see. The abuse she put up with. My heart broke for her every single time she appeared in the book.

I want to see more Kai!! I thought his character was adorable. He had unconditional love for Novi and protected her the best he could.

If I didn’t think that Fallon’s family was dysfunctional in Prince of Persuasion, I think it now. That family makes me shake my head. The mind games that are played between parents and children sicken me. No wonder Tristan turned out the way he did.

I wasn’t surprised by what was revealed about Queen Laena. I was expecting something like that. I also wasn’t surprised at how cruel she was to Callie. Nothing about that woman surprised me. I am curious to see what will happen in the next book. I wonder how everything will work out for her.

Tristan bothered me in the book. I was prepared not to like him. I mean, he did shoot Novi with an arrow. But, there was another side to him that was shown in the book. He was the same abusive jerk to Callie and Novi. But, there were scenes where he acted like a hurt child. I am wondering what he will be like in the next book.

There is dual main plotline in Crown of Contempt. The first plotline centers around Novi. It shows what she has overcome and what she has to overcome. I did feel that the decree the king threw down was unfair. The second storyline centered around Fallon and his work to make the country equal. I found it fascinating.

The end of Crown of Contempt was satisfying. I am not going to say much. But I will say that I was right about the character from The Darkest of Dreams. I did a fist pump when it was revealed. It is going to make the next book enjoyable.

In the second book in the Novi Navarro Chronicles, Novi is still imprisoned in the Temple of the Chimera. Although everything seems to be against her, she develops a friendship with the chimera Kai, whose egg was stolen in the previous book. Kai and Novi bond, becoming close friends and helping Novi keep sane.

In the meantime, Prince Fallon is trying to get Novi free but also working on creating a more inclusive world for those who are not dark elves (the rulers of the kingdom). His family continues to frustrate him, and now his father has returned to lucidity after one hundred years.

In the Annika Brisby series, there are comments about the dark elves so although this series stands on it own, I really enjoyed getting to know the dark elves’ world. I love these books by Emigh Cannaday, the care she takes building worlds, the politics, the traditions, the history and the interpersonal relationships; there is so much detail.

There were some totally unexpected twists at the end of the book, which leads into the next book and more closely ties these two series together.

What I liked in this book: The love Prince Fallon has for Novi, a never-ending love no matter what the obstacles; Novi’s intelligence, independence, and strength of character. And Kai, I really want to see more of this adorable chimera.

What I didn’t like: the epilogue jumped ahead while I wanted to know more about some of the pressing issues that were brought up. Maybe the next book will answer some of the questions I have.

Decent Continuation

*****Spoilers*****

Much of this book was despondent and sad which I guess is fair since Novi spends so much time at the Chimera prison. However, the thoughts and actions of both Fallon and Novi mirror that nature as well. I hoped Novi would express her feelings for Fallon and she finally did thankfully. He was willing to and wanted to give up much for Novi, I thought it was the least she could do to tell Fallon that his feelings for her were returned. My hope is that they'll be able to build more together and as Novi's pregnancy progresses and her demon blessing nears, it's anyone's guess as to what will happen next.

Kai, sweet chimera Kai is trapped and I can't help but feel for him remaining at the prison. When he took flight with Novi, I hoped it would be to leave with her. The Prioress at the prison isn't a likeable character and it pains me to know Kai grows there under her authority. I think that should be a focus for Novi in the next book.

I was also saddened by the outcomes for Tristan and the King, particularly since the Queen has her own agenda, whatever that might be. It's disappointing that she and the witch weren't discovered in this book. I'd like to see them both punished for what they did to Callie.

Speaking of, I'm glad she's no longer enthralled. It was hard to read about her being a captive in her own body.

I wanted to give less than 4 just because of the angst. But I cant mark it down for that. The struggle was real. Right from the get go. So so different from the first book. I spent most of the book furrowing my brows and occasionally biting my nails. Having said that, I like the writing style of this author and the story is a good one. However, I didnt warm to the characters the way I did in the first book. Something was missing. As I've literally just finished it, the reason might come to me later on reflection.

Boy, did the h suffer! Would've liked to have seen her rage against the injustice a bit more. I dont like all the suffering. It's personal. I read cos I want to feel good. I know there's gotta be a bit of angst to make it real. But, I'd like to feel good at least half of the time. Not suffer 95% and only get the goodness right at the end!

The ending was rushed in my opinion. There needed to be more explanation for some of the developments. Big occurrences with some major characters that happen on the turn of a page. It felt like I'd missed a chapter or something. It was a bit too much of a jump.

I'm still invested in the story and look forward to the next book. I'm just crossing my fingers that it goes softer on the h.

Regrettably Nonsensical & Dull

I read this thru KU. I largely disliked book 1 but have this weird need to finish the series out, as far as it's available anyhow. Also I must be an optimist because I kept hoping it would get better.

*****SPOILERS*****

This book can be summed up as follows: ML oh woe is me, woulda shoulda coulda. FL I am a human thus I am nothing. Laeria is bad. Alloria is bad. Baelerin is bad. Triston is bad. ML has no motivation to act beyond his bedroom & makes promises he never keeps. ML oh woe is me, woulda shoulda coulda. Sex. ML oh woe is me, woulda shoulda coulda. FL I am a human thus I am nothing. Sex, sex & more sex. So many skimmed pages of sex. ML oh woe is me, woulda shoulda coulda. Sex. ML oh woe is me, woulda shoulda coulda. FL I am a human thus I am nothing. I forgot about my chimera again, but oh, sex is the solution. Magical sex gave me super powers.

Literally wishing I could erase my mind RN. Will not finish the series.

Hence, 1 star.

I loved how much Fallon loved Novi; he wouldn’t be deterred. Unfortunately, he doesn’t see how horrible his family is. This book moved too slowly at times; too much political stuff became boring. There’s a deep passion between Fallon and Novi, which pulled me into the story. I just wish Fallon and Novi would realize that there’s deception all around them; they seem to complacent, and focus on the wrong things. They underestimate the wickedness running rampant in the Kingdom. It’s sad what happens in this Kingdom. The story is still interesting and unique. I wasn’t happy with the ending, but I suppose there’s more story to be had. The evil still is out there. Novi has been accused of being a spy; she’s been sent to some temple to basically be a slave. Fallon is doing all he can to free her, but he’s unaware of all the deception going on. There’s some really disturbed people out to have their way. Hopefully, a way for good to win will be found. Looking forward to reading the next book!

I'm a big fan of Fae Books but its hard to find a Good storyline these days. I do feel like I wanted to poke my eye out in a few spots in this book but that had more to do with olden times of classes and treating women like craps... I must say by the end of the 1st book I was hooked.. 2nd book just as good and still frustrating at times and I was a little mad bc I thought it was a 2 book series and well its not...so now I have to wait for 3rd book to come out(which doesnt even have a release date yet🤦‍♀️) this is a big No No for me .I like to wait till the whole series is done being releases before I start the review/read.
All in all its a good series so far.

Fantastic continuation of the Novi Navarro Chronicles!
To say Novi has had it rough is an understatement. She is dragged through hell and back but she is far stronger than her enemies give her credit for.
And poor Fallon has no idea what what forces are working against him and I think he is in for a world of hurt once he finds out.
But it seems like their love for each other is enough to help them stand strong together against the evil that is working to tear them apart.

Cannaday's attention to detail truly brings her characters and their world to life and as always has left me eager for more. I really enjoyed this story and after that ending I can't wait to find out what happens next!
So in my opinion Crown of Contempt is definitely recommend.

Paints a wonderful picture

As with all of her books, Emigh paints a wonderful picture in your head and in your heart. This book, the continuation of Novi and Fallon's story, pulls at you heart strings numerous times throughout the course of the story. I love that her novels are not predictable and she is able to throw so many twists and turns. I feel the ending in this book is a bit rushed. There were key "going ons" in Fallon's world that I feel were glossed over and made insignificant. She may be saving it all for the next chapter but the ending really had me scratching my head. The last sentence, for those that have also read her Annika Brisby series, OMG!! I cant wait for the next chapter of each of these magical stories!

Keeps you on your toes!

I'm telling you Emigh's books just keep getting better and better and there is more mystery and drama to keep you on your toes...She has been able to create a world that we can go to to get away from the cares of ours....though not better than ours what with all the drama especially with our leaders she has managed to create two of the most interesting lovable characters I've read about; I love Novi and Fallon and I can't wait to see how their story continues! Thanks as always Emigh for an awesome getaway!

Emigh Cannaday does it again. You won't be disappointed with the second book of the Novi Navarro Chronicles. Cannaday's complex world building and the interwoven plot makes this book hard to let go of until the end. I admit the politics in spots slowed things down, but it's worth reading through. Novi's strength and her intelligence are a perfect match for Fallen who tries to create equality in his kingdom and overcome all the forces determined to see him fail. More than a romance, I can't wait for the next book and see how the Annika Brisby series ties in.

This is book two in the Novi Navaro series... This series is in the same world as the Annika Brisby series.

This book certainly kept me on my toes.... just when you think you had it figured out, things would change.... you certainly could not predict how things would turn out....

Kai is AWESOME.... and I would LOVE to see more of him....

Prince Fallon has his work cut out for him, but if he can keep Novi by his side, I think it should all work out for him....

But that ending... WOWZA!!!!

4 stars for star-crossed lovers

So I'm tearing through this wonderful with it's star-crossed lovers, court politics and wicked villians and everything is going fine until I near the end. I'm definitely confused as it looked like things were resolved but never fully explained. The ending felt rushed with a somewhat HEA but then added more intrigue by dropping a bomb at the end taking on a new path for the main characters. I'm not sure if there is going to be a 3rd book. I do want more and hope so.

❤❤❤

I am really enjoying this series... although we've known Novi was special from the fact that she bonded with the Chimera, I want more details about why the Goddess blessed Novi, and I want confirmation on whether or not she was given a potion to prevent pregnancy.

I am really dying to see what happens when Dillon comes back, I'm praying he makes it before his father's passing.

And although we know who the witch is I am wondering how does the court figure it out and I cant wait to see the fireworks from that.

And Of Course I CANT WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT BOOK!

2⭐️

It could have been more stars but nothing was resolved in this book **AND** the 3rd book doesn't exist. My second biggest bookish frustration this year and we're still in May.

It's such a shame because the aurhor shows great skill in her prose that makes it flow around the reader seamlessly. Novi was just a loss potential this entire book, unlike in the first book where she was the story's driving force. The prince just fell flat consistently in both books so I was truly disappointed when my favorite character lost her spark.

Loved the continuing story of Novi Navarro. Her strength of character and tenacity for knowledge shines throughout this book. Novi and Fallon have a love which is rare to find, that’s also intertwined with family drama and magical intrigue.
The Chimera,Kai, is a welcome inclusion that shows Novi’s passionate and caring nature; hope Kai’s story continues.
I’m excited to read the next instalment of this series! Thank you Emigh for your fabulous story telling and brilliant mind!

Filled with Angst

This book had so much unnecessary drama and angst. It detoured from romance and became focused on how miserable can we make our heroine and hero. While long drawn out angst can work with satisfying heartfelt conclusion, this novel was summed up in a few pages by the magical HFN fairies. I kept waiting for the same steam I felt from the first novel to no avail.

This second book in the series is to say the least full of misery and tragedy. It is what I would call a book about troubling situations and trying desperately to overcome them and sort them out. It is complicated like a puzzle that needs the missing pieces found and slotted in to make the meaning clear. It is painful in parts but I am sure the reasons for everything will become clearer in time. Indeed this is a very good story, quite compulsive reading and I am really enjoying it.

Crown of Contempt is an absolute delight if your into Urban fantasy/paranormal romance books which I am! I loved the characters and twists I did and didn’t see coming. I would recommend any of the books by Emigh Cannaday, they each take you on an adventure that is written in such a way that you can actually imagine and see the story play out in your mind while reading. I can’t wait for what next! I am voluntarily leaving my honest review after reading this arc.

Evil is strong in the court of dark elves will love save them

Every time Novi gets out of her prison she seems to forget about Kai the dragon bird she needs to save him. Novi has finally got what she wanted but at what cost. Will Fallon be strong and smart enough to protect his family and the crown from the evil consuming it. Who knows when the next book comes out I probably forget the plot by then

Brilliant

Oh this one had me on tenterhooks. I love Novi and Fallon. I would have loved a chapter before the epilogue on Novi explaining what had happened and how. Love the link to Talvi 🥰🥰🥰 cannot wait for the next Annika brisby book and would also like more on the demon born. Maybe an encyclopedia of the two worlds and their cultures. That would be awesome

I really enjoyed this continuation of the Novi and Fallon story. I find this such an interesting story and world. I liked how Kai, the Chimera was such a part of this story. It was an interesting surprise at the end of the book. I am looking forward to what comes next. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and all opinions are my own.

Spells, secrets, and seduction

This was so good! If you’re an Annika Brisby fan this is an absolute must read! Novi goes through incredible trials as does Callie. I am elated at this ending though because it finally ties in with events from the Annika Brisby series. I can’t wait for the next book!

Though being a story of paranormal world, it undoubtedly reflects our own world: from the political plots to the insecurities that withhold everyone. New characters are introduced being the chimera names Kai, the turning point. This narrative also shows us how we long for equality and respect, how love could help restoring them. This is a Serie to be read more than once. Thanks Emigh for it.
