The day had been awesome. Alabama didn’t think she’d ever smiled so much in her entire life. Christopher had first driven them to the beach. Riverton was a suburb of San Diego and Alabama hadn’t had a lot of time to spend at the beach. Alabama loved the water, but this was the first time she’d experienced a picnic in the sand. The beach wasn’t one of the touristy ones. In fact, she’d only seen a handful of people the entire time they’d been there.
“Christopher, I…”
“Shut up, Alabama, I don’t really want to hear your excuses right now.”
Alabama hadn’t said a word since Christopher left. There was no point. She had nothing. No one. The officers tried to get her to talk, but she sat stonily in front of them staring off into space.
He knew what he was doing when he’d said it, and that made him even more of a bastard. Abe knew he’d marked Alabama when he saw the shield fall down over her eyes. It as if one minute she was there, and the next she wasn’t.
Alabama turned around and sat in the chair she’d so eagerly vacated at his entrance into the room. She calmly pulled the chair up to the table, clasped her hands in her lap and stared at the wall on the far side of the room blankly. Christopher’s voice morphed into her mama’s. Shut up. Shut up. Shut up. She cringed, remembering the feel of Mama’s fists and feet as she hit her over and over.
“I don’t like that you look around the room to see who’s there before you speak. And I hope you’ll tell me about it someday. But rest assured, I won’t hold it against you. Okay?”
”I won’t let you down. I won’t tell you to shut up now that I know it’s a trigger for you. I’ve told this before, but you’re safe with me. I promise.”
”He’d never forget the look in her eyes when he told her to shut up!” if he lived to be a hundred. He knew what he was doing when he’d said it and that made him even more of a bastard.”
