The New Camel Day Fair is a fun-filled event for residents of this upstate New York town. Kailyn Wilde, a modern-day witch of ancient lineage, leaves her potion shop, Abracadabra—and her feline familiar, Sashkatu—to attend with her fortune-telling Aunt Tilly. Joining them is legendary wizard Merlin, who’s discovering new pleasures of time-traveling to the modern world, including curly fries and kettle corn—but the appeal of the Tilt-a-Wheel is beyond his mystical imagination.

The real wild ride begins later, when neighboring sweet shop owner Lolly rushes into Abracadabra with news about a dead body. The victim has one of Lolly’s fudge knives stuck in her back, but in spite of the sticky evidence, Lolly is only one of several suspects with ample motive and opportunity. Meanwhile, Merlin’s research into old family scrolls and electromagnetic ley lines is causing some unusual mix-ups. As the two investigations collide, Kailyn will have to do everything in her power to prevent disaster...

I started writing stories as soon as I learned how to put letters together to form words. From that day forward, writing has been a part of my life whether it was my first attempt at a novel in seventh grade or the little plays I wrote for my friends to perform for neighbors and family. After college, when I was busy teaching French and Spanish to high school students, I was also writing poetry -- often in French.

After several years, I left teaching to be a full time mom, and when my two children started school, I went back to writing. To my delight I found that the muse was still there, still waiting patiently for me to come around. My first novel, Ghostfire, was published at that time. It went on to be condensed in Redbook magazine (the first paperback original the magazine had ever condensed.) Then came The God Children and The Portal. Redbook also published my first short story, which was subsequently sold to several foreign magazines. With two great kids, a golden retriever and a loving, supportive husband (whom I'd met at the beach when I was fourteen -- but that's a story for another day), I felt like I was exactly where I was meant to be in my life. But fate had another plan for me, and it went by the name of "breast cancer."

Looking back, I realize how fortunate I was that the cancer was discovered at such an early stage, but at the time it was all very overwhelming. Once I was back on my feet, I wanted to help other women who were newly diagnosed, worried and afraid. I became a Reach to Recovery volunteer for the American Cancer Society and went on to run the program for Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island. A number of years later, with the help of my surgical oncologist and two other volunteers, I started Lean On Me, a nonprofit organization that provides peer support and information to breast cancer patients. When Lean On Me celebrated its tenth anniversary it no longer required as much of my time, and I once again found myself free to pursue my first love -- writing.

Magickal Mystery Lore by Sharon Pape is the fourth installment of the cozy An Abracadabra Mystery series. The series is a mix of cozy mystery with urban fantasy with the main character being a witch who runs a magic shop, Abracadabra, talks to the ghosts of her relatives that have passed and had conjured Merlin who is now also a character in the series.

In the first book readers were introduced to Kailyn Wilde who had inherited her mother and grandmother’s centuries old shop, Abracadabra, when they were unfortunately involved in an accident. Coming from a long line of those with magical abilities in the small town of New Camel Kailyn does her best to keep the magic flowing in the shop while keeping the witchcraft under wraps.

As with most cozy mystery series each book is centered around a new case for the characters to solve so the mystery side could be understood without having read all the books. However, the characters and their personal lives have carried their story over from book to book so to get the most enjoyment and understanding it’s always nice to start at the beginning.

The Abracadabra Mystery series has continued to be one of my favorites with it’s mix of genres and cast of crazy characters. All of the books have been full of laughs with this fourth being no exception. Along with all of the crazy hi-jinx there’s always a solid mystery to solve with plenty of suspects along the way. Again I’ll be looking forward to the next book in the series to continue on with the fun.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Kailyn, Tilly, Merlin, and Sashkatu are back and it’s time for the New Camel Day Fair. Kailyn and Tilly hope Merlin will be on his best behavior now that they are giving him a little more freedom. He is still pushing for a town name change but the Tilt-a-Wheel and all the tasty treats at the fair are keeping him occupied except for all my one little magical slip.

Kailyn agreed to open Abracadabra for just a couple of hours so customers in town for the fair could do a little shopping. Buy she barely arrives back to the shop when Lolly, owner of the nearby sweet shop, drags her out to show her the dead body. The dead body in the backyard of Lolly’s shop with one of Lolly’s fudge knives stabbed into it’s back. Kailyn will do her best to help Lolly but she also has to help Tilly keep track of Merlin. Through his research, he has found information about electromagnetic ley lines and he thinks that may be what is messing with Kailyn and Tilly’s powers. Soon both problems connect and attract deadly attention.

I absolutely love Merlin! His experiences at the fair were funny and heartwarming. Do you remember your first ride on the Tilt-a-Wheel? or the first time you had carnival food? Or the waiting in lines for samples? The way Merlin handled a stressful situation just cracked me up and was so unexpected. I know Kailyn and Tilly should own gold medals for taking care of him but he has become special to me, plus there could be no Abracadabra Mysteries without him. He sometimes steals the story 🙂

All the characters Ms. Pape has created for this series are terrific. I love that Kailyn’s deceased mother and grandmother “pop in” often and not always at the perfect time. They are there to encourage and remind her to hone all her powers so they are available when she needs them. And she is going to need them. I enjoy the relationship between Tilly and Kailyn. I also am so happy that Travis knows her secret and has met all of her family. In fact, he thinks it is time she meets his parents. I can’t forget the furry characters, Sashkatu, and a dog that Merlin introduces to the family, along with several others visit within these pages. They are all cleverly written.

The mystery was hard to solve and had some darker moments. The pace was quick but I had to slow down in some places to totally grasp how the pieces were fitting together. As everything fell into place it was quite exciting and had elements that would fit an investigative television show, without the magic, of course.

This was a very entertaining book. I love the way the author inserts the humor in the right amounts and in all the proper places never taking away from the feast of the mystery. Without that the story would be overly intense. Sharon Pape knows how to walk the like between cozy and thriller so well. A real mystery to sink our teeth into with characters that make us smile and sometimes laugh out loud. They are characters I am always excited to read and see what the author has in store for them.

This book can stand on its own, but reading them in order is a great way to spend a weekend.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book.

This was my first foray into this series, and I really did enjoy parts of it. I LOVED Merlin, and i can understand the other character's frustrations with him. There are so many delicious food scenes, and he usually features by eating them all, so I can totally relate. I felt like Merlin in what is essentially a cozy was a great addition, and just added a different dimension to an already fun book.

The only thing I disliked about this one was the slightly heavier undertones that a cozy normally doesn't have. I don't want to give away the ending, but I disliked that as well because it's not your usual whodunnit. I don't know if the rest of the series is like that either, but it makes me hesitant to try them.

I did have fun with the light elements, and I ADORE that cover. Three stars.

Review:

While reading this book I realized that the cozies I like the best have characters that I adore. I would not care if there was a mystery to solve or not, I just love spending time with the characters. They become like family to me.

The characters are well developed and well rounded. I really enjoy the interactions between Kailyn and her Aunt Tilly, you could tell how close they were and how much they loved each other. Merlin just makes me laugh and I really enjoy reading about all of the trouble he gets in to, much to the dismay of Kailyn and Aunt Tilly. Travis, Kailyn’s boyfriend, seems like a great guy and their relationship is moving along nicely.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the first page. I can picture in my mind’s eye all the trouble that Merlin creates and the difficulties that follow, trying to fix the messes that he makes.

The mystery was well plotted and carried on well throughout the entire book. There are plenty of suspects to consider and clues to sift through and decipher and it was not easily solved. I was not entirely sure of who the culprit was until the reveal at the end.

I would highly recommend this book (and series) to anyone that enjoys a well crafted cozy. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the books that this author has written, and I have read them all (even her earlier Portrait of Crime series). Check them all out, you will not be sorry.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

I had forgotten how much fun the books in this series are. Kaitlyn is still running the shop with occasional help from her aunt as well as the quirky Merlin. His fiascos alone are enough to make a great book such as the invisible dog but add a murder on top of that and it really gets good. The mix of magic and mystery is perfect making the story unfolds in a captivating fashion. Perfect for fans of magical cozy mysteries. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Great Escapes Book Tours. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Lolly and Danielle didn't kill anyone, right?
Magickal Mystery Lore by Sharon Pape is an exciting book. I was mesmerized even, without having read the first three books which isn't an issue as the main character Kailyn tells you enough information throughout the book that it isn't relevant to enjoying this book. We follow Kailyn through solving a mystery, dealing with romance issues, and trying to get her aunt Tilly from harming Merlin.
Kailyn
Kailyn is our main character and the person that we follow throughout the story. She, like every single member of her family, is a witch and has to keep that a secret except for the around the people that she really trusts. Like her boyfriend and best friend. Kailyn is a twenty-something-year-old. She is trying to run her business while doing a lot like keeping up with Merlin, yup the one from King Arthur that she accidentally summoned to our time, away from trouble. That isn't an easy task to do at all.

What I like about Kailyn is that she is different from the other amateur sleuths that I have read, and that is one close to my own age. Her shop is really cool, and I especially like her magic. The one thing that I didn't like about her is that she apparently pulled the same thing that Travis did to her about going out for a simple meal between friends with Paul Curtis.
Travis
Travis is a reporter for the news stations and an anchorman for the evening news as well. He is Kailyn's boyfriend, and they have been solving crimes together which is fantastic. Travis knows about Kailyn, Aunt Tilly, and Merlin being magical and doesn't seem to care. They go through some rough patches throughout the book, but they get through it at the end and are a bit better after the whole ordeal. I think it's sweet with how worried he is for Kailyn, even if he does know about her magic because that is what you do for a loved one.

What I like about him is that he doesn't try to stop her from doing something that he thinks is dangerous; instead, he tries to be there with her while she is doing it. He is a very supportive boyfriend even if he does something stupid and doesn't think that she would hear about it later. That leads us to the one thing that I dislike about him is that he didn't tell her about meeting up with an old girlfriend for lunch one day.
The Crime
The victim is named Ava Duncan and was found behind Lolly's chocolate candy shop. From there Kailyn and Travis uncover a lot of secrets that a lot of people have been hiding. Especially Lolly and her daughter Danielle and about what they know about Ava. Ava was found stabbed in the back behind Lolly's store. Lolly didn't kill her since she is a nice sweet little old lady. Or is she?

Kailyn and Travis uncovered a lot about Ava's work relationships, her personal relationships, and the way she is with her family. Everyone said that she was a nice girl but if so then why was she stabbed in the back? The reason for that is as shocking as the whodunit. I won't spoil it for you other curious readers know that nothing is as it seems in New Camel, New York.
Five Stars
Magickal Mystery Lore by Sharon Pape is a gripping tale that sucks you in from the very beginning and doesn't spit you out until the very end. I love a good mystery that makes you think and want to take notes on the crime and all the suspects so that you can work it through with the characters. If I could have put the book down, I may have had my crime board. These engaging stories like this make me love cozy mysteries and try to figure it out before the main character does. I had a feeling about this one, but I just wasn't sure until the very end after it made sense.

I am giving this book a five-star rating and recommending to all paranormal cozy mystery lovers out there. Who knows maybe you will find any of the three other books reviewed on my site in the future.

*received for free from netgalley for honest review* This was a really cute little magical mystery book, I've never read any of the other books in the series (but would now like to!) but I didn't feel like I missed too much. I also liked the characters, they were cute and not annoying, also not overly romantic always a plus for me!

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Magickal Mystery Lore is a new cozy mystery by Sharon Pape and the 4th Abracadabra mystery. Released 16th April 2019 by Kensington on their Lyrical Underground imprint, it's 246 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.

This is a completely escapist cozy mystery with some over the top paranormal plot devices. The returning main characters - the trio of magic shop owner and telekinetic powerhouse Kailyn, her slightly dithery-but-sweet Aunt Tilly, and Merlin (yes, that Merlin) are back solving another murder and taking on a shadow corporation in their spare time.

I will say that for the paranormal cozy mystery subgenre, this one is well written. It's silly and somewhat humorous. It is well plotted and the dialogue is well written. Despite being the 4th book in the series, it does work as a standalone, and all the necessary backstory is written in.

I enjoyed the book a lot, but must admit that my suspension of disbelief suffered more than a few dings every time Kailyn's mother and grandmother showed up (as clouds whose color changes reminded me of some sort of afterlife mood rings). Readers in search of pure escapist fantasy could find a nice read here. The physics involved (or counfounded) over the paranormal parts of the plot (Kailyn is a telekinetic who can teleport), will require some mental gymnastics to get around.

The language and plot are fairly clean (a few 'hells' and 'damns' but nothing worse), and there's only implied consensual (off scene) sex, nothing that would scandalize anyone's auntie.

Three and a half stars, rounded up because the author is quite adept and it's a fun read (and I love Merlin).

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

*I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Edit: I am fickle and I checked out the first in the series and I'm also torn between a rating of 2.5 and 3 for that. There's definitely some editorial issues in the books, with character names suddenly changing and things to that variety.

Magick. Mystery. Murder. Merlin. Moggies. All the ingredients to make me say “SIGN ME THE HECK UP, I MUST READ THIS IMMEDIATELY.” Plus, the cover. That is a stunning cover, my friends.

It’s a shame however that for the first 10% or so of this book I loathed it. Genuinely. Reading it was giving me an intense headache and I couldn’t quite figure out why. My best guess is because this is my first foray into this series which leads to the pitfalls of how an author can introduce this setting and characters to new readers without needlessly repeating themselves to those already established in the series. Except there’s a lot of needless repetition that happens throughout this book alone that I kept stopping to flip back and see if what I was reading had been mentioned before. (Spoiler? It had).

That said, I continued on because I truly wanted to like this book, and I’m glad I did. The resolution was a bit underwhelming to me but I found the premise of magick really enjoyable. In fact, a lot of the magick seems based on what real practitioners do which I think helps the novel keep very grounded in reality without going overly fantastical. The characters themselves grew on me throughout the book when I started out very unsure on Kailyn. As for a final rating, I was very much torn between 2.5 and a 3 and I think I’ll have to go for a 3. I might check out the others in the series though it’s not high on my priority list as I’m hesitant some of the things I dislike will also be in the others. I think fans of the series will enjoy this, but for newcomers it’s maybe not the best book to start with.

The fourth book in the Abracadabra mysteries is set in the quirky small town of New Camel, in rural New York State. The fictional small town is somewhat of a tourist destination, and one of the main attractions is Abracadabra, a magic shop owned and operated by Kailyn Wilde. Abracadabra has been run by the Wilde family of witches since pre-Revolutionary times, dispensing natural beauty products and remedies-with a little added magic. Kailyn did not expect to be running the shop alone as a twenty-something until the untimely and accidental deaths of her mother and grandmother, Bronwen and Morgana. The two are not entirely "passed over" however, and pop in from time to time with sometimes unwanted advice. Kailyn is also aided by her psychic Aunt Tillie who runs an adjoining tea shop. Added to the mix is Merlin, the actual wizard Merlin, summoned from the past by Kailyn, who has been having problems with her magic. Until she can figure out how to send him back, he is an awkward houseguest with a penchant for getting into trouble.
New Camel has been plagued over the past year or so with a string of homicides, in all of which friends and family have been suspects. Kailyn jumps into investigating them, with successes in all. She does this very openly, causing chagrin among the local police. This time a young woman is murdered behind the local fudge shop whose owner is a longtime family friend, almost a second mother to Kailyn. With her reporter boyfriend, Kailyn sets out to save her friend and finds more intrigue than she expected.

I waffled a bit on the rating for Magickal Mystery Lore. While it is entertaining as a complete-escape-read, I found it hard to believe that anyone who professes to want to keep her abilities under wraps would be so open about them to perfect strangers. The magic seemed somewhat simplistic and the character development lacking, particularly that of the boyfriend, Travis. For me, it was just an "ok" read. It did keep me reading and amused. Thanks to NetGalley and Lyrical Underground for an advance digital copy. The opinion is my own.

This was such an enjoyable read. Though it is part of a series, the author does a wonderful job of explaining the prior important parts of the books throughout this book that you don't feel lost. There is romance, intrigue, mystery, and mischief. If your like me and haven't read any prior books in the series, don't let that stop you from getting started here and like me going back to the beginning because this series is just so much fun you need to read more. Or you can definitely heighten your anticipation by starting at the beginning and waiting to get here. Each way, I definitely recommend reading.

A delightful entry in the Abracadabra Mystery series finds Kailyn Wilde dividing her time between sleuthing, riding herd on Merlin, the wizard from Camelot, and investigating why magic spells sometimes go awry when cast in New Camel.

Kailyn is summoned by Lolly, a neighboring shop owner, and finds Ava Duncan, behind Lolly’s candy store, with a knife stuck in her back. Travis, a reporter and Kailyn’s boyfriend, and Kailyn begin brainstorming who might want Ava dead. Primary suspects are Lolly and her daughter Dani, whose husband Elliott is having an affair with Ava and Brock Davenport, Ava’s ex-boyfriend. The red herrings are plentiful as Kailyn and Travis move from lead to lead in search of real clues. And, as usual, more suspects emerge.

Merlin’s shenanigans keep the reader chuckling or laughing out loud in some instances. While reviewing old magick scrolls he inadvertently summons a huge dog that he then makes invisible when he tries to send him back. Now the huge animal is creating havoc as he moves around knocking over people and things because no one can see him. Next, Aunt Tilly finds Merlin gone and calls the police. Merlin is discovered sleepwalking down a residential street with three dozen local cats following him – and all seem to be in a trance. Finally, his obsession with food makes living with Tilly, a stress baker, both amusing and challenging.

Finally, in his search to determine why magic doesn’t seem to be working properly, Merlin finds a local company that is developing large magnets may be altering the ley lines around New Camel which in turn affects the ability of magic to manifest.

There are a lot of twists in this story. Travis is re-united with an old flame and his behavior upsets Kailyn. Merlin, while delving into the ancient Wilde family scrolls, finds that Kailyn and Tilly are his descendants. Kailyn perfects her teletransportation ability when she is kidnapped by a couple of thugs and uses her ability to escape. Angie, Ava’s closest friend, disappears with her two children after warning Ava about strange things going on at the company that employs them both.

Sharon Pape crafts an enchanting story that is so engaging and easy to enjoy the reader may overlook the skill required to create this captivating read. As a character, Merlin is an ingenious fabrication that offers intriguing interaction with the book’s two sorceresses, Kailyn and Tilly. Ms. Pape makes New Camel a fascinating community to visit.

Kaitlyn manages Abracadabra, a shop with beauty potions and elixers made from botanicals with just a touch of magick to ensure they are the most effective. Of course things aren't easy when Merlin, yes that Merlin, gets called to the present time accidentally and has some issues with modern society. And a murder that needs to be solved. It's all in great fun and totally entertaining! Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Kailyn Wilde is a witch who owns a potion shop in the small town of New Camel, New York called Abracadabra. She sells everyday products with a little magic added. Following the death of her mother and grandmother Kailyn is left to run Abracadabra on her own. Her sole remaining relative is her Aunt Tilly who is a fortune-teller. Along with her news reporter love interest, Travis, Kailyn has been instrumental in solving some local murders. In this story a woman is found dead behind Kailyn's friend Lolly's candy shop with one of Lolly's fudge knives in her back. There are very few clues to go on in this case but Kailyn and Travis are determined to find the killer. They will be surprised at how dangerous this case will be.

Magickal Mystery Lore by Sharon Pape is the second book in her Abracadabra Mystery series. I didn't read any of the previous books in the series but I still managed to follow along with the characters and their interests. The storyline was complex enough to keep me guessing until the end. There are surprises throughout the story too. I really liked the characters and their interactions. There were plenty of interesting interludes and fun scenes. I was attracted to this book because it deals with witches and magic as well as a murder mystery and I was not disappointed by that. I'd like to find a potion shop like Abracadabra and experince some of Kailyn's magic. Now that would be fun!

I honestly wanted to like this book more than I actually did. I mean, look at that cover!
The mystery was engaging but felt a bit overstuffed.
I really did like the parts with Merlin and the way the book dealt with the concept of magick.

This is a delightfully funny witch cozy! Meet the Merlin of legend in modern day upper New York, and see what havoc he can wreak in the lives of a couple of modern witches.

As if running her family’s potion shop, Abracadabra, alongside her Aunt Tilly’s tea and fortune shop weren’t enough for Kailyn Wilde, the legendary wizard, Merlin accidentally dropped into the rear of her store almost a year ago. No matter what they have tried, nothing so far has been able to send him back to his own time.

Something has been causing the Wilde’s magic to go awry. Merlin is sure he can find the problem by studying the family’s scrolls. That is when he can pull himself away from Tilly’s cooking and the marvel of the modern television.

Kailyn has had other trouble on her hands as well. The murder rate in their small town of New Camel has definitely been on the rise. The local detective not only dislikes Kailyn, he actively doesn’t trust her. It can be a problem when Kailyn and her local anchorman boyfriend have a better solve rate on murder than the detective.

When murder strikes close to home, just outside a good friend’s candy shop, it is up to Kailyn to prove her friend and their family weren’t the culprits! Come along for the crazy adventure filled ride!

I was gifted a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

MAGICKAL MYSTERY LORE by Sharon Pape
The Fourth Abracadabra Mystery

Fudge maker Lolly is a beloved resident of New Camel, not only because of her delicious treats, but for her generous and caring personality. When she discovers a dead body by her garbage cans she runs to Kailyn Wilde for help. With no easy way into the locked backyard and one of her knives impaled in the victim, loveable Lolly becomes suspect number one. Keeping one eye on Merlin (yes, that Merlin), Kailyn and her reporter boyfriend team up to prove Lolly's innocence.

A simple murder in New Camel turns into much more as Kailyn discovers adultery, a stalker, a gambling addiction, and even a covert organization. There are several men behaving badly in this book and I include Kailyn's boyfriend Travis among them. I've had issues with his behavior in previous installments and this one has me believing he is not the right man for her. Another character that really made me angry was Tess, the owner of the ceramic shop and new resident to New Camel. She's the epitome of the bigot who hates and wants to destroy what she fears because she can't understand it. She also serves the lesson "no good deed goes unpunished".

There are so many things that make this a great book in a wonderful series. There's the main suspect, who is as sweet as the candy she makes in her shop, and the entire Wilde clan who make me want to visit New Camel and stock up on candy and the more healthful products at Abracadabra. These eccentric characters get into fantastical situations yet they still manage to be real and down to earth...even the clouds that are Kailyn's deceased mom and grandma. We also get to enjoy the legendary Merlin who never fails to make me laugh. The cats that also make up the Wilde family add joy...and sarcasm, at least from Sashkatu. In this fourth Abracadabra Mystery, we finally discover why the Wilde's magick has been wonky of late. I appreciated the discussion of ley lines, which really do exist in this part of New York. There is also plenty of action, including a kidnapping and teleportation!

MAGICKAL MYSTERY LORE is more than just a murder mystery. It's an exploration of being different in the modern world, yet still fitting in. It's about doing your best for others and being loyal to friends and family. It's a fun read that kept me emotionally engaged and open to the vast possibilities of the universe.

FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me a digital ARC provided through NetGalley, in the hopes I would review it.

Kailyn Wilde is a contemporary witch but her lineage goes way back. She owns an old family potion shop called Abracadabra (potions and creams of which she infuses with spells from time to time). Her aunt Tilly has a tea and fortune-telling business next door. Together, they've been invaded by Merlin, the magician of ancient times, who got stuck in one of Kailyn's spells gone awry and was pulled into the Wilde's world. He is still working on figuring out why, and at the same time discovering all the gleeful treats in today's world.

This is the fourth in the series and it seems coming in to this author and series at this point I've missed a number of character-building threads. So no, I wouldn't say it could function as a standalone and you may wish to begin back at Book 1. Kailyn's sweetie is Travis, a news reporter. He tends to participate with her in the sleuthing activities and is aware of her paranormal capabilities. There is enough going on with this well-plotted, unique narrative, and support characters to keep the reader engaged and turning pages.

New Camel (upstate New York) is holding their annual festival and both Kailyn and her aunt normally have a booth beside the other merchants in her small enclave of touristy shops. Unfortunately, one of their own, Lolly, a close friend and shop owner comes home to discover a body in her backyard. Of course, she'll be number one on the local police persons-of-interest and Kailyn and Travis will work to discover the whodunit.

I thoroughly enjoyed the author's obvious sense of humor, writing style, and observations of things that can go wrong with magic and relationships including the appearances of her mother and grandmother who had passed on (crossed the veil). Nothing is ever simple and the murder mystery twists and turns in the wind with new discoveries. Most threads are pulled in to a rather convoluted conclusion and one that left me somewhat frustrated.

Still, I enjoyed the storyline well enough to look for Book 5. I received this ebook download from the publisher and NetGalley and greatly appreciated the opportunity to read and review. Recommended to all who enjoy a different kind of cozy with a decidedly distinctive appeal.

Princess Fuzzypants here: This is one of my favourite series. I love the characters including our witchy heroine, her late mother;s familiar, Sashkatu, her fortune telling aunt and Merlin. Yes. Merlin of Camelot fame. The setting is the town of New Camel where Merlin who has been transported from his time to ours frequently reminds us is missing its “lot”. In spite of the fact that Kailyn’s family were the magical founders of the town, they know from experience they need to keep their special gifts under wraps.
In fact, this time a good deed Kailyn performs backfires when fear replaces gratitude. So as her powers increase and she uses more and more of them, she runs the risk of too many people knowing her secret and the secrets of her family. It’s a slippery slope as regular folk often have trouble with magic.
Throughout the series, the Wilde family has been experiencing difficulties with their magic, which is the reason Merlin landed in New Camel. He has been trying to figure out what is the cause of the problems and uncovers even more information. It is clearly going to be an interesting direction for the characters.
While all this is going on Kailyn is trying to figure out who killed a young woman and framed her friend, Lilly. It’s a good mystery that brings in corporate malfeasance and the dark web, which is far nastier than any spell Kailyn or her family might cast. The final resolution was both surprising and exciting, leaving me wanting more.
I can give this book and series a hearty five purrs and two paws up.

The combination of magic and a well crafted mystery make for an enjoyable read. My favorite kind. Kaitlyn Wilde is a witch, a shop owner and investigates murders. She is aided not only by her reporter/boyfriend and her Aunt Tilly, owner of the tea shop next door but by the real Merlin from Camelot. Yes, poor Merlin has been yanked out of his timeline and dropped into New Camel, NY and resides with Kaitlyn when one of her spells goes wrong. Until he can figure out what is plaguing her spells, he is stuck. I hope he stays - he's a hoot. The cast is rounded out by the spirits of Kaitlyn's mother and grandmother and their cats.
Lolly owns the chocolate shop and anyone would say she wouldn't hurt a fly but the police are not buying it when the body of a young woman is found in her backyard with one of Lolly's knives stuck in her, very dead, indeed. If the killer wasn't Lolly and it wasn't her daughter, Dani, who killed Ava and framed Lolly? Leaving the police to their own investigation, Kaitlyn and Travis start their own investigation, hopefully before anybody else dies.
This is a series that really should be read in order so the reader gets the most out of each book. However, this one can stand alone just not with the benefit of the well developed back story. The mystery is very satisfying, full of the anticipated twists, turns and occasional red herrings and I'm ready to read the next mystery in the series.
My thanks to the publisher Lyrical Underground and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

New Camel New York is the home to a main street that any tourist would love to visit. Nestled across from the best candy shop in the county is Abracadabra, a centuries old shop that specializes in nostrums and magick spells for lay people. Lolly, the beloved owner of the candy shop is stunned and horrified when she discovers Ava's body in the back yard of her shop. She immediately seeks help from Kaitlyn. A wise decision, because she is now the lead suspect. Travis and Kailyn embark on another hunt for the truth. This time the search is compromised by the return of one of Travis' early loves. Will he be honest with Kailyn, or with himself?

Merlin is still a wizard with a mission. He is still researching the arcane texts, trying to discover why the magick seems to be fading from this powerful family. His efforts are still a bit skewed by his age, and now by his sleepwalking. A highly amusing scene involves Merlin in a nightshirt, wandering down a street followed by a multitude of cats. The Pied Piper wasn't the only one with this ability it seems. This is a strength of the author, magic is used both to advance the plot and for comedic effect. The spells that are shared in the text could easily be used as affirmations in the real world.

Pape has created an engaging modern protagonist. I look forward to reading more of Kailyn's adventures.

Full disclosure: I received a copy of the work from netgally.com and Kensington in exchange for an unbiased review.

You can read this as a stand alone, but part of the fun was in how Merlin came to live with Tilly and her niece, Kailyn Wilde, both members of a magical family whose magick doesn't always result in desired effects. Part of this book deals with Merlin's research into what is making their magic go awry.
Another major factor to this book is dysfunctional family relationships, as well as romantic struggles. Kailyn is dating a news reporter, who knows about her magical abilities, and he feels it is time she meets his parents. Her own mother and grandmother have crossed the veil, but still "pop in" for visits.
A woman is discovered dead behind one of the New Camel shops on the day of a town festival, when many of the shops closed for the day. Kailyn knows the shop owner is innocent, but evidence piles up against her and her daughter.
Furry family, aka familiars, also play a fun role as the book unfolds. It seems many animals love to be near Merlin, including an invisible dog summoned from another time and place.

Parts of the story are a bit heavier or darker than many other cozy mysteries, but so much is going on that keeps the action fast paced and entwined with lighter moments.
With Merlin around, life will never be boring.

This is the 4th in series and my favorite of the series. This is so much fun to read that I was unable to part with it until the end. I highly recommend the entire series. I love paranormal cozies and this is one of my favorites.

Kailyn Wilde is a witch who owns a potion shop in the small town of New Camel, New York called Abracadabra. Kailyn is left to run Abracadabra on her own after the death of her family. Her sole remaining relative is her Aunt Tilly who is a fortune-teller. and quite fun to read about.
In this story a woman is found dead behind Kailyn's friends shop with one of her friend's Lolly's knives in her back. Kailyn and Travis are determined to find the killer and set out to piece together the clues to find the right suspect. Soon they are on the right track and in terrible danger as they grow closer to solving the case. Kailyn will not give up until she solves the case.

Magickal Mystery Lore by Sharon Pape is the 4th book in her Abracadabra Mystery series. The characters are rich and enjoyable to know, the magic is a fun aspect of each book and interesting.. Each book has a excellent sleuth that surprises me at the end to conclusion. This is a highly enjoyable fun cozy series that I look forward to returning to.

This is the 4th in this series and the first I have read. Kailyn Wilde is a witch who runs a potion shop and know Merlin (Yes that Merlin) the legendary wizard. Her neighbor Lolly from the Candy shop runs into Abracadabra to tell Kailyn that there is a body behind her shop with a fudge knife in her back. The victim is Ava Duncan and there are little clues to go on but Ava was having an affair with Lolly’s son in law. Could it be Lolly or her daughter. There is also some strange things going on where Ava worked. Interesting story and love the characters of Aunt Tilly (Kailyn’s only relative who is a fortune teller) and Merlin. Magic goes astray and Merlin is investigating with some interesting results.

I’ve read the others in this series, and I dived right in to this, the fourth book in the series. I was tickled that this book was just a much fun as the other books. I adore Tilly and Merlin, probably more than I do Kailyn the main character. The book had the fun I expected, and a wonderful plot that kept me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next. I do have to admit, though, that the subplot between Travis and Kailyn didn’t sit well with me for a couple of reasons. I really can’t say much, but I think most of it was out of character, and I didn’t like how the conflict was resolved because it made both of them lesser than they were before. Also, the end of mystery was a little more “heavy” than I expect from this series. However, I did enjoy the book. I do recommend this book! I was provided the e-book which I voluntarily reviewed.

Magickal Mystery Lore is the fourth book in the Abracadabra Mystery series! I didn’t get to read the first three books in the series, but I didn’t feel lost at all. I feel like you can start this series from any book and still enjoy it.

I really enjoyed the characters, especially Merlin! I just found him delightfully entertaining and amusing. He made me laugh out loud many times.

Another thing I liked about this book was how it wasn’t just a cozy mystery. It had sort of an urban fantasy flair to it that just made it more interesting.

If you like cozies and fantasy books, definitely give this series a try! You won’t regret it.

This is one of my favorite series and this book was a lot of fun to read as the other installment.
The plot is bit more complex than usual with a somewhat darker tone.
It was great to meet again the cast of quirky characters, both human and feline, and see what was going on in their life.
I loved Merlin sleepwalking and this book made me laugh out loud more than once.
The mystery was very good and it kept me guessing till the end.
A very enjoyable and entertaining book.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to Kensington Books and Netgalley for this ARC

Another great installment, a little magick and a little murder. Who could possibly believe that sweet maker Lolly could be responsible for the death of her son-in-law's mistress? Could it have been Lolly's distraught daughter or perhaps the ex boyfriend? To add to the mystique, Kailyn will be meeting the parents, dealing with a sleep walking magickal Merlin, and a good deed that doesn't quite go unpunished. Great story line and a very nice progression of Kailyn and Travis's relationship. Even Sashkatu would approve, in a most uppity way, but none the less he would approve.
