Megan studied English at university and then went on to write books for Usborne. She's now teaching English to children in a secondary school, where Usborne books make a regular appearance!
This is a nice train book. I got it for my 5 year old, who is really into trains. He loves it. The illustrations are colorful but realistic enough to satisfy him, though they aren't like photographs. The book is large, hardcover, and has thick pages, some of which fold out for very large pictures. They are nice heavyweight pages, and seemed durable to me, although I was unpleasantly surprised when my 2 year old somehow managed to rip one of the fold-out pages off at the fold. She's been hard on books lately. :( So, it may need supervision for smaller children, but it's a nice book.
Fantastic. Very engaging with wonderful illustration for hours of little fingers unfolding and folding back the pages. The information is just enough for the toddler to learn by heart and play reading to mom a book.
This Usborne book complements another Usborne book Look Inside Trains which covers similar material but the Look Inside Trains has more detail about how trains and railways work. The Usborne Big Book of Big Trains became captivating to my 4.5 year old because of the large foldout pages and bright illustrations. The book is essentially illustrated lists of different models of trains grouped by the type of train such as steam trains, diesel trains, high-speed trains and more. It also introduces how different train technologies work.
Trains and a bridge to explore further:
Southern Pacific 4449 (California, USA)
Milwaukee Road class A (Midwest, USA)
Darjeeling Toy Train - tourist train that goes up the Himalayas (India)
Noojee Trestle Bridge - oldest wooden trestle still in use (Australia)
Fairy Queen - the oldest steam train still in use (Delhi, India)
The Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express - one of the longest train routes (Russia)
Maglev (Shanghai, China)
Mallard - fastest steam train (UK)
This is the most amazing book for little boys! The minute my five year old opened the cover he was whisked away to train yard full of fun! The pages in this book are thicker than your average book but not qualified as a board book. The pages feature large, full size illustrations of various trains. The descriptions are filled with history, facts and fun tidbits every little kid is so eager to read. One neat feature in Big Book of Big Trains are the large fold out pages. These pages fold out to a full four panel poster with large sized train engines sure to have your little one mesmerized and entranced for quite some time. This particular book focuses more on the illustrations than long written passages, using more of a picture book writing style. Each page is filled with facts and history about trains, engines and the featured train or engine illustrated on the page. The majority of our boys books spend a lot of time on the bookshelf. Once the book is read it is placed back on the shelf until the next time it is read. The Big Book of Big Trains has never spent more than an hour back on the bookshelf. It has taken up residence on the couch where Zane and Broden refer back to the book several times throughout the day. They have truly fallen in love with this book and it has become their favorite!
I would highly recommend this book for every little boy! It is fun, and educational. The Big Book of Big Trains is the perfect book to start your childs love of reading and will surely treasure this amazing book for years to come!
I'm fairly certain my 11-month-old has no idea what I'm talking about when I read to him about steam, diesel, funicular, and luxury trains. Still, as soon as I pick up this book, all crying stops. There are huge foldouts that seem to mesmerize him. I've also found the book personally educational, so it's also enjoyable for adults.
