Whispering Hills #2

My Shifter Hero

Rate this book
Lifetime comic book geek Truman Thompson knows that his future as a shifter depends upon him finding a mate. Without one, he can’t unlock his supernatural powers and rise to his full potential. But finding the missing half of his heart won’t be easy. His Asperger’s syndrome prevents him from easily understanding the feelings of others, and threatens to condemn him to a lifetime of loneliness and wasted possibilities.

Unless Luke Lancaster has his way.

Ex football star Luke had everything a young man could want. Athleticism, money, and even a career that fulfilled his heart’s passion for competition. His world is shattered when an injury left him with a mangled foot and knee, and he’s forced to earn money to care for his ailing mother by attending conventions as a washed-up has-been.

When he arrives in “Whispering Hills,” the mysterious town known for uniting soulmates, finding true love is the last thing on his mind. But there’s something about Truman that he can’t ignore… Could this lonely, comic-book obsessed omega be the love of his life, the man with whom he is destined to live happily ever after?

If only it were that easy.

Note: “My Shifter Hero” is a steamy shifter Mpreg 65,000-word novel set in a paranormal Omegaverse. This male/male romance contains male pregnancy and is intended for adult readers.

This is the second book in the Whispering Hills series, although it stands very well on its own. People are drawn to Whispering Hills in hopes of finding their mate and with it, gaining the abilities to shift and all the perks that come with that.

Truman, who owns the comic book store in town, has been in Whispering Hills for years, hoping for that alpha mate will eventually find his way to him. Luke, an ex-football player with a bad injury that ended his career, is found in Whispering Hills and Truman knows right away that Luke is his mate. Now he just has to convince him that shifters are real and for Luke to stay with him in this small town.

After reading this and the first book in the series, I can only suggest that the author really needs to get a better editor. There are just so many punctuation errors as well as tense issues where it switches between past and present in the same paragraph, or even sentence. "No Truman" means that Truman is not there. "No, Truman," means that you are telling Truman "no." Two very different ways of reading that with just a comma there. Just one example of things that distract me as a reader from enjoying the story. I also feel with stronger editing, the story could be tighter and culled down, as it did feel unnecessarily wordy and long. I struggled with the second third of the story, not gonna lie.

There is an interesting premise with the way the shifter world is set up here, so I hope that the author will continue to write and grow this series and bring some new ideas to it, as well.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 🌟

This is the second book in this series, but it can be read as a standalone. The characters are well developed, and the storyline is well thought out. There are still several editing issues; again, mostly punctuation errors, but I did not notice them as intensely as I did in the first book.

Truman has Asperger's syndrome, which makes it hard for him to understand facial expressions, the nuances of conversations, and people's feelings. He also has a reluctance to express his own personal thoughts due to the way he has been treated throughout his life. He has been alone with his comic books and Whispering Hill's pups while waiting for his own superhero soulmate to arrive.

Luke's dream of being a football superstar is cut short when his knee and foot are injured beyond repair. Now, he is trying to earn money by selling autographs and selphies at conventions, but he knows it's a losing battle. His main priority is taking care of his widowed mother who was completely dependent upon his father.

A wrong turn and a car accident land Luke in the mystical town of Whispering Hills. He is injured, confused, and in the closet; but he is immediately entranced by the beautiful boy - no, man - that has come into the room. Unfortunately, Truman seems to be in an awful big hurry for them to "mate" and settle down together, but Luke is not on the same wavelength.

Eventually, with the help of other pack members, Luke is finally willing to accept that the supernatural world does exist, but an accident with his mom pulls his attention back to Dallas.

Over the course of the story, many tragic events take place, and the reminder that all magic comes with a price is a big theme. But, although both MCs are willing to pay the ultimate price, it is Truman who loses.

But, Truman has always had the overwhelming notion that all magic comes about because of people's beliefs. He must put his thesis to the test more than once in order for his family to come out whole.

Overall, I enjoyed this story and it kept me entertained. Truman seems to believe that Luke as his Superhero Shifter, but I'm not sure if it doesn't work both ways.

Happy reading!

Where book one wasn't as great with the definitions of terms, world-building, and individual depth, My Shifter Hero did much better. Because Truman was excessively wordy at times and due to his personality, when he described something he did it well. Where he was lacking, other characters picked up the slack when Luke had his big doubts and questions. It wasn't entirely adequate, but it was better. Their relationship felt more solid because of the way they learned to communicate, the little things they did to understand one another, and the way they had to earn their own individual acceptance before they could truly accept their mate. Their trials felt more magical and emotional rather than physical.

One thing that was missing from their "welcome" to the pack was the Sheriff acknowledging the strengths of each man when they came back after their trials. What they brought to the pack was more valuable, I feel than what I've seen others "offer", but that seemed glossed over.

A moment that stands out as being overly simplistic, showing a serious lack of creativity, and pretty absurd, was the "reasoning" given to the drastic change Luke's mother experienced. I was pretty disappointed with that and it soured so many of the good things going on in that scene. Other than that, the overly descriptive story is an improvement on the first, but I'm not sure that it sold me on coming back for more of the series. It's not a bad read at all, it just wasn't my type of story in the end.

☑Touching tale of a washed up🏈 athlete and his surprising new lease on life!

👍💕😢The latter part of this story was much better than the beginning. The plot was good, the main characters Truman and Luke complex and sympathetic, the secondary paranormal characters varied and interesting. Shapeshifting Dr. Keller was a hoot! The story had good action and suspense with a lot of heart as the MCs went through a series of tough times and difficult, potentially life-changing decisions in the name of love.

I had to downgrade my rating of the book because something about the phrasing of the writing made it a bit confusing to read. And the opening rambles about comic book and fantasy characters were lost on me since I have not read a comic in over 40 years and have not joined the fan bandwagon on the wave of super hero movies inundating the silver screen in recent years.

Overall, a worthwhile read with an array of angsty and really touching moments capped with a lovely, happy ending.😊🌄

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

This is a sweet, entertaining shifter romance & the second book in the series “Whispering Hills” there are some character crossovers but this book is complete & standalone. The plot is well-written & interesting with some unexpected occurrences. The complex characters have unique individual personalities that struggle with emotional and/or physical issues as they continue to emotional develop throughout the story-line.
There is: a lonely comic book obsessed omega geek with Asperger syndrome/also called AD (Truman Thompson), an ex-football star & dormant alpha with injuries that ended his career (Luke), wolf shifters, vampires, witches, humans, some twists & turns, intrigue, drama, adventure, secrets, magic, memories, misadventure, manipulations, strange attractions, verbal confrontations, ultimatums, unusual abilities, conversations, family issues, emotional turmoil, disappointment, friendly advice, deception, deals, mischievousness, love, happiness & steamy scenes

I really like the storyline in this book and I love that this series has such a unique and interesting take on the alpha/omega/shifter/mpreg trope. The world building is excellent and the characters are intriguing but the writing style doesn't flow as well as I would like and it made it difficult for me to enjoy this story. The editing issues are much improved compared to the first book but there are still too many mistakes. Luke and Truman are interesting characters but they really don't seem to have any chemistry or a connection other than being mates. I want more background information about both of them and I wish that the author had focused more on Truman's Asperger's syndrome. I also want more of the two witches as they are my favorite part of the book. As with the first book I am intrigued by the possibilities in this series but I wish that the execution was better.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

3.5 stars

The writing style for this book made it feel a bit long to me. There were a lot of sections that mention something being explained to a character by another character, but we never "see" the actual conversation/explanation, so I felt like I was missing little bits of the overall puzzle. I did like the characters, both Truman and Luke have their personal issues that complicate their relationship, but that was a big part of them figuring out how to make their relationship work. I think they both have a lot of growth to go through accepting that the future they thought they would have (the one they've built up in their dreams) is not the one they are going to get, but it makes it no less an amazing future.

I have not read the first book in the series, but I think this story held up well as a standalone.

Good read

Truman was hard for me to believe. While he is supposed to be on the spectrum, and later in the book, we hear about how he is very literal and doesn't understand many idioms, he spends the beginning half of this story thinking of sex and his body's needs in nothing but euphemisms and allusions. It made the character seem unrealistic to me.

Luke was more consistent, and he had to learn to not allow his fears to rule his life. It was a long process, and one that had several setbacks along the way, but I liked that, in the end, Truman and Luke found joy in their family and peace in their lives in Whispering Hills.

I thought this book was well written and had a fairly good plot. Whispering Hills is a secret small town where the Alpha ends up after finding himself lost, out of gas, driving on gravel in a dense fog, and with brain fog, too, from taking extra pain pills for his pro football injury. So he takes a stupid risk attempting to cross an old wooden bridge across a deep ravine, winding up coming to in front of the Sheriff, a doctor who looks like Sammy Davis, and a young Omega man who claims him as his 'mate.' His mate takes him to his home above his comic book shop and they began to get to know each other. Neither have ever shifted, nor have much sexual experience leading to a good story.

I'm giving this book a total of 3.5 stars. I thought the book could've been a bit better as far as the storyline went. At times it seemed a bit boring for my taste but wasn't a bad story where I couldn't finish the book. Now having said that, just because it wasn't my favorite doesn't mean it won't be yours. Please read all the reviews as well as the authors synopsis to see if this would be a book for you to read.

This second book was great.

Different from the first book as the two main characters were quite different.

I really loved Truman, he was so good and so sweet. Being different made him endearing and my heart ache for him, time and again.
I liked Luke, but I could have shaken him at times. I know what he is going through is not easy, but it didn't excuse everything.

I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to what's next.

A different twist on the shifter/mate story, and not in a bad way! I love this tale of latent shifters, men who don't seems to really fit in anywhere, until they find themselves in Whispering Hills. It's got the right amount of paranormal, suspense, passion, and a surprise that took a page or two to digest! Great series!!!

A nice smooth read, the book has a great flow.

Luke is a broken Alpha, Truman an unusual omega but together they are the perfect couple.

The fact that Truman gives up what he does is an outstanding call out to love.

I adored Truman he is this straightforward yet quirky character that I just absolutely loved.

DNF as I did not like this one. In particular I didn't like Truman but not sure exactly why. Though I didn't like this one, I will still be continuing the series as I love this world.

There is always a price to be paid

I loved Truman and Luke's story and I absolutely adore Truman. Their road to HEA was a bit bumpy but they finally got on the same page. This was a great second installment in the Whispering Hills series.

Not Pleasant

This is one of the darkest themed and unhappy shifter stories I have ever read. I did not enjoy any of it. Dark themes, unhappy shifters, broken people and lots of misfortune.
