Rate this book
Sometimes we have to face our greatest fears in order to become whole again.

Returning to Maui after one of the most challenging summers of her life, sixteen-year-old Olive Galloway is ready for things to return to normal—or, at least, a new normal. But even though she and her sister are back on the island they love, nothing is the same since they left for Boston a few months ago. Olive’s friend Jazz is hiding a secret—possibly something even worse than the cancer diagnosis she received earlier in the year. Can Olive ever stop running from memories of all they’ve lost?

When their friend Brander suggests Jazz attends the church’s teen support group, Olive thinks it’s a great idea—until Jazz insists that Olive join her. While the group is the perfect place for Olive to share her struggles, she wants nothing to do with it. Instead, grief threatens to roll over her like the ocean waves, and tiny fibs turn into looming secrets. When a scruffy puppy and one viral video send another storm rolling into Olive’s life, she ends up face-to-face with her biggest fear. And the only way to make it out of the tempest is to go straight through.

{ Deals with grief, also has a story that major animal lovers might be sensitive towards. }

You know when you love a book and then you starting reading the sequel, you’re slightly nervous about whether you’ll enjoy it as well or even worrying that it won’t measure up to the first book? “Porch Swing Girl” is such a special book in my eyes and I’m so happy to say that I found “Sand Castle Dreams” to be just as good as the first book…if not even a bit better.

There was so much growth for Olive between the beginning of the first book and the end of the second book. So much growth. The character development was very real in the emotions and reactions Olive had, but also in the time-line.

I really enjoyed “Porch Swing Girl”, it’ll be forever one I recommend to contemporary YA readers because of the faith content, light romance, and storyline. However, I enjoyed “Sand Castle Dreams” so much. (So if I’ve recommended you the first book, just read both of them, okay? ;) ) I think I would say I liked this sequel more, actually. The faith content and prayers was phenomenal. Olive wonders about God in such a relatable way and the help she gets about God from her Gramma and friends was wonderful. When I reread “Porch Swing Girl” prior to reading this novel, I found myself a little more frustrated with Olive than I remembered in my first reading of it. And for those who felt that way, I hope you’ll give this second book a chance. Like I just said, Olive’s growth in this book is amazing character development, probably one of the best I’ve seen.

I don’t know what else to say, honestly. I enjoyed this book so much and I cannot wait to start the next (novella and then the next) book. I teared up at many points while reading and felt for Olive often because of how raw her emotions were. I truly so very ready to dive into the rest of the series. :)

this was such a worthy sequel and I enjoyed every moment of it!! (literally read it in under 24 hours of getting the arc) at first I was slightly suspicious and wondering because the plot seemed to start so similar to Porch Swing Girl and I was just like ... "??? is this a rip off of the first book?" but nooooo. it was it's own thing.

I loved Olive's journey of healing and learning to be a friend. loved seeing the conflicts and dynamics between friends, and the theme that EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN HURTS AND EVERYONE STRUGGLES was really resonant. the summer vibes of the previous book were all there and I just want to move to Hawaii, you know?

this series is really reminiscent of Christy Miller BUT ... EVEN BETTER, in my opinion. it has the same sort of beach vibe, same sort of "we're-more-than-friends-but-not-dating" romance going on (??), same sort of friendship struggles, mostly absent parents, and an mc that's somewhat whiny on occasion but - IDK TRADEWINDS MANAGES TO PULL IT OFF WITHOUT MAKING IT ANNOYING. (no offense @Christy) you want the good parts of Christy Miller without the frustrating aspects, then READ THIS SERIES.

anyhow, I loved this book so much and highly highly highly recommend you all to read it!!

ALSO THAT PLOT TWIST WITH BRANDER LIKE I DIDN'T SEE IT COMING AT ALL AND WAS IN TOTAL DISBELIEF AFTER JUST LIKE THE OTHER CHARACTERS. bravo Taylor.

Age Appropriate For: 13 and up for discussion of alcoholism, dealing with grief, some bullying.
Best for Ages: 13 - 20

I usually dislike books written in first person present tense. I have trouble getting into them. However, these books are so good, I love them despite that.

This book deals with some hard stuff head-on, like grief, facing fears, friendship difficulties, and alcohol abuse. Without being crude, overly detailed, or whitewashing, this book addresses those issues and more is a powerful way that is sure to help many process their pain.

All the old gang is back from the last book, but there are new struggles and challenged. One of Bennett’s wonderful strengths is that she shows relationships with depth, bumps, struggles, and joy. No relationship stagnates and few (if any) are without some troubles. Yet, I love how everything works out in the end. Not perfect, but good.

The romance was once again sweet and I think very well done for a teen book. It was sweet, very chaste, with relatable problems.

The setting for this book is one of the things that makes these stories special. Hawaii is beautiful and Bennett pulls you into that world, painting vivid descriptions. It makes me want to visit!

I highly recommend this book to teens, those who are looking for a beach book, and those who like stories about real-life struggles.

My Rating: Four and a Half Slices of Key Lime Pie out of Five

What I Loved...

I loved the way that friendships were portrayed. Brander, Jazz, and Olive are such a great friend group! I wish that YA fiction had more friend groups like them. Too often YA books focus on romance. Which brings me to my next point…

The “romance” going on didn’t take over the story. The focus of the story wasn’t on the romance, and the subtle romance didn’t take over the story as it does in so many books. I loved this because being teenager is about so much more than dating and breakups.

The character arcs were phenomenal. It was exciting to be able to see how Olive and the other characters grew and progressed from Porch Swing Girl.

All of the desserts that Olive’s grandmother made!!! Um, yes, this is a total highlight. Can Olive’s grandmother just cook for me? Yes? Perfect! And you can actually have some of her cooking by making the recipe in the back of the book! Don’t you love it when there are recipes in the back of books?

The themes and messages packed into this book were a big highlight for me. From dealing with grief to authenticity to saying goodbye to helping friends, the themes, examples, and messages in Sand Castle Dreams are sure to uplift, encourage, and inspire readers, as well as bring them closer to God.

The setting of Lahaina, Hawaii, was so well written. I felt like I was in Hawaii eating shave ice and walking along the ocean with Olive and company. I really, really want to go to Hawaii now…

What I Didn't Love...

Olive slightly annoyed me sometimes. She seemed a bit whiny at times, in my opinion. A bit whiny and moody, but she made up for it in the end. =)

It felt a bit preachy at times. Olive’s friends and grandmother seemed to “preach” a bit to Olive. I feel like themes and messages could have been delivered better in different ways and been just as, if not even more, effective.

Conclusion...

Sand Castle Dreams is the epitome of a good summer read. It’s got a summery setting. It has a great group of friends. And, most importantly, there’s a lot of dessert. 😉 I’d highly recommend this to anyone who loves YA Christian fiction or a good contemporary story.

so cute! i read this in about one day, and now i need the next book.

/ what i liked:
- it's so refreshing to read a YA contemporary that's just plain good and sweet and clean. it's Christian, but not overwhelmingly so or in a cliche way.
- the characters aren't perfect. i normally don't enjoy the Christian contemporary genre bc all the characters seem to be perfect Christians and their lives are great, etc. but Taylor Bennett's characters aren't perfect. they're broken and dealing with grief and other serious issues, but all the time keeping their eyes on God. <3 <3
- i want a Brander in my life. seriously.
- also i love Olive's grandma. <3
- the way that Taylor Bennett portrayed grief. grief is messy and painful, and not something that you can just have for a little while and then put away. Olive's struggles are real and raw.

/ what i disliked
- *takes deep breath* okay. here we go. the main thing that i REALLY did not like about this book (why it gets 4 stars) is the portrayal of homeschooling. i'm homeschooled. have been for the majority of my life. and i get that people do homeschooling different (i.e., some people do co-ops, online classes, or curriculum at home), and Taylor Bennett was homeschooled. it's just that the portrayal of homeschooling in Sand Castle Dreams was very strange. Olive decides that she wants to be homeschooled, bc she doesn't want to go to the public high school. so she asks her grandma, and her grandma agrees (this isn't a spoiler). and then, it just happens. GUYS YOU CAN'T JUST DECIDE YOU WANT TO BE HOMESCHOOLED. you have to go thru different levels of submitting test scores, etc. to be given permission by the government / etc. to homeschool. you need a parent who acts as your teacher. you can't just get school books and stay at home and just do school . and where does Olive get her school books? the curriculum? who's grading her papers and tests? who's acting as her teacher? idk, it may be just me, but that part really bugged me, mainly bc homeschooling is such a major part of my life. << also, if Olive wants to go to Harvard, it seems weird that she'd be okay with suddenly switching to homeschool in her junior year, instead of taking more rigorous courses at the public high school.
- ^^ apologies for the rant...it's just something that i didn't like about the book.

all in all, Sand Castle Dreams is a thoroughly sweet read, and now i really want the third book (and a trip to Hawaii).

I was excited to pick up this book after the first. While I did like seeing the characters again, I didn't enjoy this nearly as much.
This book felt much more disjointed, the theme not as clear as the first one. A couple of characters seemed to turn nice really fast as well.
This author does have a good writing style, and I will be picking up the next book.

I had the incredible privilege to receive an advanced reader's copy of Sand Castle Dreams by the amazing Taylor Bennett! Let me tell you guys, this book gave me a major book hangover! It's written in such a way, that you become so involved in the story, so attached to the characters, that you feel like you, yourself, are part of the book.

Sand Castle Dreams is the sequel to Porch Swing Girl, but don't let the word "sequel" scare you off. It is, by no means, less than Porch Swing Girl.

Olive continues to change drastically as she realizes her past mistakes. I can clearly see how this girl is growing into a much better person, even if her struggles remain the same, or even multiply. So many great changes happen in Olive's attitude. She's clearly growing into a much more mature young lady, that does anything for her friends... especially Jazz. Speaking of Jazz, I consider that Sand Castle Dreams focuses a but more on Jazz's story. However, even if it does tell us more about Jazz, other characters aren't neglected. Brander, for example, goes through some BIG changes that may or may have not broken my heart a little bit. (Don't worry! He doesn't turn evil on us, or anything like that.) A few new characters are introduced too.

There are three things that won me over for Sand Castle Dreams:

1. The little references to Pride & Prejudice!!! There may have been a little play on one of P&P's quotes that totally rocked.

2. How very sweet and innocent the romance is. I despise it when books portray relationship's between sixteen year olds as perfect and intensely romantic. Taylor keeps the minimum romance just as it should be between such young characters.

3. The references to God and Scripture. Do I really have to expound on that?
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5

I was SO excited for this to come out. I'm not sure it can compare to the effect Porch Swing Girl had on me when I read it because of where I was emotionally then. I sobbed through PSG. But this one was still really good.

Taylor Bennet did a great job of showing the character's growth and change while still making them the same characters, not quite healed yet, but learning to grieve the dreams washed away by the waves of life.

Despite what I said about the special place PSG has in my heart, I did relate to Sand Castle Dreams a lot. Learning to be a good friend and to be open especially. Olive and Jazz.... just yeah. And even Brander's subplot. Making big life decisions is where I'm at right now too, but it's not easy.

Overall the plot seemed at first to follow very similarly to PSG, which some might see as repetitive, but seeing as I loved PSG, I wasn't overly bothered.

Other things I liked/loved:
-Homeschooling
-Koa the puppy
-Olive's improved relationship with Gramma and Macie... I suspect her dad will be a big healing/sore point in book 3
-Shave Ice Shack (even I missed Brandar and Olive's time together there)
-Maui! It was SOOO easy to step back into this world of paradise and brokenness.
-New characters

Content warnings:
Sexual content: None. One kiss on the forehead.
Language: None. Just some fun Hawaiian sprinkled throughout.
Violence: Off screen in anger someone hurts a puppy. A cat gets killed by a dog (it's very emotional for one of the characters).
Other: (maybe minor spoiler?) there's an alcoholic character. Mostly off-screen.

Sand Castle Dreams dealt with some harder topics than the first book, but that made it all the more rich in theme and character. I loved the emphasis on how it’s okay to admit if you need help and that it’s not healthy to keep everything bottled up inside. I initially liked the characters after reading Porch Swing Girl, but they’re so vibrant and real in this sequel. The picture of friendship is absolutely beautiful and admirable, and while there is a slight tease of romance, I was perfectly okay with it since it was not in the least a typical hormonal drama-fest. Also, the descriptions of the food (especially the desserts) and the setting. So vivid.

I did feel a little like Olive teetered backward in her character arc, but it also worked okay because it showed that she was still flawed and didn’t have a prosperity-gospel type of life after rededicating her life to Jesus.

I’m very impressed with this series; contemporary books are not my usual genre, but sometimes I find some that are as lovely as a piece of shiny sea glass washed up on the beach.

Content: alcohol abuse, mention of an out-of-wedlock birth

Okay, I would love to skip a review of this one, but it is so good and deserves at least something from me. I'd skip reviewing since it was just so good...

I really loved getting to know more about Olive, Jazz, and Brander, and seeing them grow more from where they left off in book one was sweet.

At times there were things that kicked me in the stomach, just wow, the faith shown in this book was so well written and it was a really good reminder for me.

If you like young adult fiction or even if you DON'T like young adult fiction I suggest you try these out. Oooh, and, I just love how Bennett doesn't have a romance going on YET. It is just a sweet relationship that has the ability to become more.
November 24, 2023
Ms. Taylor Bennett has really raised my standard in Christian fiction, I absolutely love the way faith is not tip toed around and is openly discussed. As a Christian your life should revolve around growing a relationship with the God who loves you and this series really shows that.

And the content in this book is completely clean, while still being deep and thoughtful.

I feel like in the beginnings of these books I have second hand embarrassment but I know that by the time I get to the end I'm fed deep lessons that help my own walk with Christ :)

I'm so excited to see what the next books in this series hold!

Even better than book one, faster paced with more great lessons to be learned, and some raw emotions to take you on a riveting ride! While you can read this book on it's own, I definitely recommend reading this series in order, as some of it won't make /as/ much sense.

I loved getting to know all the characters more. This story was mostly about Olive sorting through more of her grief ... there was less anger than in the first book, but still a lot of sadness. I really felt for her, and totally understood why she wanted to keep it all in.

But ... it's hard to keep it in when life seems to be doing everything to pull it out of you, as Olive finds out. Or rather her friends—who also have secrets of their own—try to pull out of her.

Part of the book seems to turn into this tug-a-war of friends holding tight to their pain but trying to drag it out of the other. Very real, very off-setting, but in the end ... don't want to give anything away ;)

And there was a new character, Malia, too.

There's a lot of messy life in this book, but a lot of lessons to be learned, too. It's heavily Christian, but not cheesy. Just perfect.

If you love Christian Contemporary or want to give it a try, this is a great series/ book to read :)

If I did not know the author is a teenager, I would think this book was written by an older adult. The wisdom and life lessons she shares concerning the hurting teenagers in the story show a grasp of dealing with grief that many adults have yet to work through. Not only that, the matter of earning trust and being able to keep confidences is something many adults still cannot do. Olive was struggling desperately to deal with the loss of her mother and did not feel she had anyone she could trust enough to let into her life to help her. At the same time, she knew Jazz was going through some very deep waters, but she could not get her to open up and share what was going on. How strange that we want to fix the problems of everyone else but refuse to accept help with our own problem! I have heard an old expression, and said it myself, that things often have to get worse before they get better. That seems to be the direction of this story. Maybe you wonder how things can get any worse than losing one’s mother, but read this teenager’s story to see how that played out for Olive. Will she open up and get help? Can she help Jazz with her problems? And what does a puppy dog have to do with any of this? Have you ever had dreams that crumbled like sand castles beneath the pounding surf? Whether you are nineteen or ninety, if you have ever been faced with grief, I encourage you to read Olive’s story. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

Sand Castle Dreams is a young adult novel by author Taylor Bennett. This is book two in the Tradewinds series, it can act as a stand-alone. However, it is so good the reader will want to read the series.

This is a great exhilarating story that engages the young adult reader from the beginning. The reader spends time in Maui with relatable characters Olive, Jazz and Brander. Jazz wears a prosthesis after her leg was amputated because of a tumor, and Olive’s mom has passed away.

This book deals with some tough issues that many young adults face in the world today. To help with the problems the characters are introduced to a church-sponsored support group which I find helpful.

I believe young adult readers should give this series a try because, as they will find, it’s not always easy to open up about our problems. But, as they read they will learn it’s much better to bring them out into the open, with safe people than to keep them bottled up.

The ending was satisfying and opened up the series to continue with book three which is set to be published June 1, 2020.

As with Porch Swing Girl, my favorite aspect of Sand Castle Dreams was definitely the strong narrative voice of the protagonist, Olive. Really pulling off a distinct, dynamic first-person narrative is difficult, and Taylor does a wonderful job of making Olive come to life on the page.⁣

In fact, most of the character cast felt more alive in this book. Taylor dug deeper into them than before, brought to light their flaws, their struggles, and their fears in a way that felt truly human. She showed that things don't just magically get better when you think you've gotten past something; sometimes they actually get worse. This story dredged through the struggles friends face when secrets are buried with lies, when they are grieving, and when they are broken.⁣

I will say that I was a little disappointed we didn't see that same depth in Brander (who was one of my favorites in PSG). Instead, he felt a little too perfect in contrast with Olive and Jazz, which made me lose touch with him. While the other characters are cracking open and spilling their guts, he didn't seem to get a scratch. Not really, anyway.⁣

⁣All in all, though, I found Sand Castle Dreams to be a very solid read, deserving of a good 3.5/5. Excellent narration, solid character development and pacing, and great depth of theme.⁣

Sand Castle Dreams" is the second Tradewinds Series book and starts shortly after the first book "Porch Swing Girl". I think it would be best to read the books in order, but "Sand Castle Dreams" does fill you in on the major points of the first book. I found the book to be well written and I liked the pace and the characters. I could feel Olive's frustrations and hurts and how she tries to shield herself from more heartache but wants to help her friends. This book is good for showing that the Christian life is not all a bed of roses, nor an easy road, but that God is with you through it all. The characters all have things that they need to deal with and grow through. There were things that made me cry and things that made me laugh. I look forward to reading more books by Taylor Bennett.

I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received for my review.

This second book was a little heavier than the first, dealing with alcohol abuse, but it was also packed full of wonderful truths about friendship, trust, the healing journey, and facing our fears. I loved that even though Olive has learned a lot, she has a long way to go and her journey through grief isn't over yet. Seeing all of her flaws only made me love her more, and I could really sympathize with her fear of dogs after losing her cat to a dog when she was younger. I loved watching Olive change and grow over the course of the story, and of course, I loved how her relationship with Brander is developing!

Taylor does a great job portraying what real friendship looks like--with all the mess, tears, and struggles. But she doesn't end there. She also shows the loyalty, support, and trust a true, God-honoring friendship provides, even through intense difficulties. Any teen girl will find this book a valuable, encouraging read!

You know how sequels never are as good as the first book?
Well.
Hah!
Sand Castle Dreams shatters that lie. 🥰
It is a beautiful, heartfelt story of hope, healing, and faith. Once again, Taylor Bennett writes a story full of real and raw struggles, vivid, wonderful characters, and a island that we all love.🥹
The characters are still there, but they grow and change and become EVEN MORE REAL…if that’s posible.
Is it?
I guess it is!
I seriously CANNOT say how much I love this book. It might change someone’s life. ❤️
I’ll be recommending it to ALL my friends!
I CANNOT WAIT to see where the story takes Olive, Jazz, Brander, Macie, Gramma, Malia, and now ME!!! (Because I honestly feel like I’m THERE WITH THEM) next! 😊

Sand Castle Dreams" is the second book in the Tradewinds Series. It begins not long after the first book "Porch Swing Girl". The book is well written and I liked the pace and characters. I read “Sand Castle Dreams” so Olive, Jazz, and Brander felt like old friends. A Christian’s life is not always easy and this books shows us that God is with us all the time. The characters are teens but they have to face deep issues such as dealing with grief, trust and budding romance. I recommend this book to teens and adults alike.

Great story!!!! I loved it! Watching the story unfold and all the twists and turns with characters... I truly believe Taylor Bennett is going to go far in her career! She already has four books, but I'm believing there are so many more in her future!! I loved seeing Olive, Brander, Jazz, Macie and Gramma again... As they navigate the world and each trying to see God in their choices and wait for His will in their lives. As we all should. If you haven't read it yet, you need to!!! Beautiful story!!

Life sure is complicated if you're a teen. Layer on a deceased mom, self home-schooling and a rambunctious puppy, and you have one overwhelmed girl. Olive does her best to stay strong for her little sister and for her new bestie, Jazz, but is frustrated at every turn, especially when she learns her friend is hiding a secret. When her other friend, Brander, is offered an opportunity on the other side of the country, she's left with yet another loss. I can't wait for the next book!

I was so looking forward to this book! Porch swing girl charmed me and this sequel did not disappoint. I loved getting to know Jazz more and her backstory. I loved the character development and story line. If your looking for a clean, wholesome, feel-good story then this is for you!

Sand Castle Dreams is SUCH an amazing continuation of Olive's story! Porch Swing Girl (the first book in the series) was amazing, and Sand Castles Dreams did not disappoint as book number two!
Taylor's wonderful words and storytelling talent are definitely God-given, and she does such a good job of giving God all the glory in her books!

Bennett has done an excellent job crafting her characters. With this second book, it felt like I was visiting dear friends, as I walked this path with Olive, Jazz, and Brander. These characters feel real, and that's my favorite part of stories.

A sweet, engaging, and enjoyable read during a power cut :)

Highlights: desserts, broken characters learning to heal, Pride and Prejudice references
Lowlights: Brander felt a little too perfect? Also, some of the characters can be a little preachy at times.

4.0 solid stars.

Another great book by teenage author Taylor Bennett. Taylor does a good job with the realistic details of fickle teenage relationships and family drama. In this novel we learn more about Olive's friend's Jazz family situation. I can't wait to read Barefoot Memories, the third novel in the series.
