I had a variety of jobs, including secretary, trainee buyer at Harrods, dental nurse, production assistant in a reprographic and printing company and various others.
I began to write after joining a creative writing class. I had no success with article writing, or short stories, or fiction, but the first children’s story I wrote, for a magazine called Twinkle, was accepted for publication. Hooray!!!
Things snowballed and a lot (yes lots and lots) of hard work later I now write full time and have over 50 books published. I still go to the same writing class and we have become a big happy family of writers!
For me, writing is the best job ever. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. I love to create worlds for young children to enjoy and escape into – whether the stories are educational, bedtime, problem solving or just plain good fun. It’s also very exciting to see the first picture roughs, as my wonderful, talented illustrators bring the text to life.
I live on the Essex coast in a lovely two-bed-roomed flat, which I share with my husband, Michael. At long last I have an office to write in, with room for all my books and bits of scribbled on papers.
The seafront is (still) just around the corner, and I find a bracing walk (it gets freezing when the East wind blows from the North Sea!) or gentle stroll when the weather is warmer, is great for clearing my head and mulling over story ideas.

No help needed: leopard, cozy, perched, breakfast, puffin, excitement, beautiful, waters, together, forever, Arctic, sparkled, wonder, sunshine, penguin, sheltered, magical, huddle, softest, tonight.
Help needed: glittering, fragile, dawn, drowsy, cliffs, foamy, roar, precious, glides, crystal, calm, stretches, icicles, glisten, glint, lively, shadowed, onward, wrapped, blizzard, northern.
Hard book. Grace loves it, daddy found it pretty boring.

December 28, 2021This children’s poem is suitable for KS1 readers who are beginning their reading journey. It is also a great read aloud book because of the tempo that the poem follows. I like that the poem includes a wide range of Arctic animals as this introduces the children to animals they might not have heard of before. “Perched on the cliff where its craggy and steep” is an example of a sentence from the poem that challenges the children’s vocabulary and reading skills. The phrases in this poem paint a picture of the cold, icy and tough environments for the animals that live there. It would be a good addition to a KS1 classroom library because it can link to lessons on animals, habitats, seasons and weather.

Beautiful illustrations and lyrics about the wonderful animals that live where there is ice and snow.

My only complaints of this are that Orcas are, more specifically, dolphins, and penguins, very simply, do not live in the Arctic. Otherwise, this is a beautifully illustrated book with soothing, rhyming text that is perfect as a bedtime book in winter and for introducing Arctic animals and geography. If only it were not for the two things mentioned above, I would love and enjoy this book as much as my daughter does.

Reading level- first grade or kindergarten
This book would be a great book to use in the classroom as a book for your library or for a unit on animals or even seasons and weather. It takes you to the places of the world that have cold environments, explains what animals you would find there and gives a little information about the animals habits. The illustrations are nice and detailed.

Very cute book. I love that it talks about so many animals that a lot of people don't know about and the pictures make them all look so cuddly.

I use this book in my classroom library, the illustrations are beautiful and the children are engaged while reading or being read to. Nice use of vocabulary.

This book is rather lovely, but not too much of a story.

This was a beautiful written and illustrated book about animals that live and thrive in snow. Told in verse makes it fun to read out loud.

This a cute book about arctic animals. It goes beyond the polar bear and the penguin.
