"Hard as Rock" is a a standalone novel, and the third story in the collaborative, multi-author, sci fi series, Khargals of Duras.
*-*

After the loss of her parents, Meline scrapes together the cash to take a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Armed with her great-grandfather’s journal, retracing her heritage should be exciting, yet she can't shake the frightening feeling someone’s been watching her from the moment she arrived in the old city. Then Roc shows up just when she needs him, offering to help. He's sexy-as-sin, wealthy, and well-connected, but there’s something he’s hiding.

Roc needs to locate his Khargal sire's lost sigil before all hell breaks loose, and Meline holds a journal with the answers. After centuries of "liberating" art, he's never thought twice about lying or stealing, but when the captivating woman appears at the site where his father's buried, he hesitates. Something about her has gotten underneath his stoney exterior, and he doesn't know what to do.

When a clandestine group hunting the sigil emerges, Roc and Meline must face them together before the sigil turns everything to ash. Yet the challenge may not be finding the sigil so much as breaking down the wall guarding Roc's heart.

Khargals of Duras

A thousand years ago, a Khargal scouting party left Duras, only to crash on a planet called Earth.

Injured and outnumbered, the stranded Khargals hid among stone effigies and observed the slow evolution of the planet’s primitive inhabitants. With no means of returning to Duras, they watched from their shadowy perches and faded into legend, becoming the mythical gargoyles.

Until today. Long after any hope for rescue had died, the distress signal has finally been answered.

It's time to go home.

Thank you for your interest in my fairy tales.

Writing is my hobby. As a child, I had a hard time learning to read, so anything I took an interest in was deemed acceptable. I have always enjoyed fairy tales, the older unsanitized versions, as well as the modern ones, mythology, science fiction, action and romance. As I read, my mind wanders, spinning its own tales. So, I figured I’d share my ramblings with you.
The books I write contain little snippets from my life. I leave it to you to decide which scenes are fact, fiction, or a bit of both. I am far braver and bolder than is likely sensible, so my heroines are just as gutsy. I'd probably be categorized as an adrenalin junky. My life has been an adventure. I've done archaeology in the hot sun, am well versed with power tools, took Tae Kwon Do in college, have ridden on a Harley with a dark stranger, but never met an alien, vampire or shifter, that I know of.
My stories are tawdry, feature a heroine who is gifted in some way, and will always end happily ever after. It is my opinion this is meant to be entertainment, and a depressing ending is not entertainment. Real life offers enough depressing crap. However, I have been called dark.
My apologies for my horrific grammar. It is something I struggle with. It is probably connected to the slow reading thing. Believe me people have tried. I truly hope that my fairy tales make up for it.

Maybe a bit too cute

This series is an author collaboration and while I really like the author from book 2 (Regine Abel), I was in the mood for darker tone, which I know this author had.

Sadly,

Two lonely souls find solace in each other... 4 stars!

This was a nonstop adventure from start to finish, and I loved every word. Roc is a half-Khargal and half-human hybrid that has spent his whole life not fitting into either species. He has had to live the last centuries of his life hiding who he really is, never allowing himself to be free.

After Meline lost her parents in a car accident, she decides to go back to Quebec in a bid to feel closer to her family. Little did she know that her ancestors would lead her to Roc, someone who makes her feel special and treasured. But their journey is plagued with danger and death and plenty of HOT scenes and dirty talk. I loved this book and will definitely continue on in this series! ♡

**2.5/5 stars**

I was going to give a slightly higher score but here we are...
I'm not sure if this book is supposed to be the second one or the third one, as Amazon and Goodreads don't seem to place it in the same spot. I personally consider it as a the second volume, as I noticed the main character in this one, Roc, appeared as a secondary character in Gravel and Grit.

In Hard as Rock, we follow Roc a Khargal-Human hybrid who grew up on Earth and been living for centuries, trying to blend in the society but hiding his inhuman features. His sire, Petronus crashed with other Khargals on this planet centuries ago without a way to get rescued. Making a life there, he found a mate and had a baby that we know to be Roc. After the death of his mate, Petronus went into duramna, which is a sort of stone hibernation, leaving Roc alone in this world. When news come that a sigil is somewhere located in Canada, that rescue is coming at last, Roc decides to find it for his father, who may wake up and see his home again.

As for the other side of the story, we have Meline a woman who lost her parents just a year prior, who decided to travel and dive into her family's history/origins. She finds herself in Canada, at Chateau Frontenac. What she doesn't know is that this trip may be more eventful then she signed up for...

Roc was a bit of a player, surrounded by clichés that he's had many women but never had a relationship. He was a little bit cocky and smug overall, but not in a seductive way, in my opinion. Something about him just didn't make me like him all that much at first. He did grow on me eventually but not enough to make me truly like him.

“I’m an asshole. I’ve had more one-night stands than one man should, and you’re too sweet to do that to.”-Roc

As for Meline she went through a lot of personality change during those...three days? She started as a clumsy and somewhat shy woman who wasn't particularly unpretty but very nondescript (as Roc put it while comparing her to the blonde bombshells he usually goes for at parties and pubs...nice!). I thought I liked her at first but the more I read about her, the less she made any sense.

Roc knew it was selfish, but he rarely let women touch him, for obvious reasons. But Meline wasn’t just any female. Although maybe he should’ve tied her up. Her mere touch did things to him, made his blood boil. Not only were his canines throbbing but so were the talons that tipped his wings. It was a completely foreign sensation.

I didn't think their first encounter was all that great either. I hated the costume party for a fundraiser, with the demon and angel cliché. It just seemed weird to add this to this plot. I understand Roc has tried to blend in all these years, but to be so reckless as to show his true nature to humans during a party just to feel like himself again but pretend it's a costume was a bit silly. It's not like he can't be himself in privacy...This whole bit took me out of the story. Thankfully, the smut brought me back in, until it pushed me out again. It didn't seem to me that they really were fated mates until it was revealed they were, and even then, I found it hard to believe.

I liked that the events were set in Canada, more specifically Québec, which is where I'm from and where I live. I didn't expect to read about Québec's history when I picked up these books. Now I understand how it feels to be aware of incoherences and frustrated by the mispelling of names and words, or the inaccuracies when it comes to geography or history. I also couldn't get over the fact that Roc was using canadian french/quebec slangs. I understand it may sound like a great idea from a foreigner's perspective (although I don't know where the author is from) but the use of those curses sound so unsexy to me. Roc once said: ''Ostie d'câlisse de sacrament'' which pretty much can be translated to ''Fuck, fuckity fuck of fuck'' has no real in-depth meaning. It's just a bunch of mispronounced church words, which are used like verbs, adverbs, or adjectives (just like 'fuck')...and the more curses they combo in a sentence, it means the angrier/annoyed they are, and the more they sound like drunken old sailors. See the picture? I myself don't even use those swears as I find them extremely annoying to hear. When I hear stuff like : ''Ostie de crisse de tabarnak de câlisse de sacrament'', it's an immediate turn off for me. Thankfully, Roc only said something like that once, but he kept using the ''sacrament'' slur, which we could've seriously done without. It made me cringe.

Overall, not my favorite couple so far. The plot itself had potential but the clichés and the inaccuracies, or even the action at the end fell a bit flat to me. Overdramatic events and miscommunication, paired with an unsatisfying conclusion just took me out of it. I know I'm bashing but it was just not enjoyable for me. But as I see, many reviews are positive here, so don't take my word for it, I was most likely just biased.

I liked the first book, but now I'm not so sure if I'll read the next in the series...We'll see how I feel.

This has been my introduction to this series; since Stephanie West is one of my top science fiction authors, I went for it...fortunately! This is a talented author, she writes endearing and funny characters, the narrative is never boring and you get to really like the MCs.

Roc's description was my ideal male type...gosh, he is a dream...and what makes him sexier is precisely his alien attributes: leathery wings, horns, tail, and his huge endowment ;-)

Meline is hilarious, intelligent, compassionate, and both Roc and her together are a hoot.

Also, the whole concept of how the Khargals ended up stranded on Earth, their isolation, the Prime Directive (being a Star Trek fan, this Directive is quite familiar), everything fascinated me, in addition to the Khargals physiology.

Stephanie West is exceptionally good writing sex scenes, so erotic my computer almost ended up in flames, super hot scenes, and Roc was an incredibly virile male character.

If you enjoy science fiction, don't miss this series, and give this book a try, you won't regret it. I would give it a higher rating if I could!

Very funny H, and a plain Jane bored with her narrow life. She wants more, and she got it once she meets the H. He's lonely for family even though he's very successful, and the h's differences intrigue him. They have quite an adventure together, it was a lot of fun.

I enjoyed it = 3 stars despite the fact the author got nearly every bit about Canada wrong.

This is a perfectly serviceable and cute alien and human romance. Part of a series with different authors each taking one book. I liked both leaf characters and appreciated that the female lead was not a moron and the male lead is not an alpha-hole. I was a bit bothered that some of the details about the aliens does not seem to agree with the first book but it wasn’t major.

As a Canadian I was bothered by the consistently wrong geographical names. Montreal is in Quebec. One does not return to Quebec from Montreal. I finally realized the author meant they were returning to Quebec City. It is Trois-Rivières not Three Rivers. I’m Anglophone Canadian born in Montreal but living in an English speaking province and have never not once heard it called Three Rivers. And it is Fort Liard not Fort Laird. These things are also minor but do make me wonder about the authors research skills. So I might read another alien book by her but perhaps skip anything requiring accuracy.

They are finally here!!

I have been waiting for this series for a while, I even clean up my KU account, so I have enough space to get all the books at once!
Binge time!

So… back to the book at hand.
A thousand years ago the Khargals crash landed on earth; soon after the crash, they realized that their Sigil or beacon was not working, they were stranded. Fast forward to current times, the Sigils have mysteriously activated, after all this time rescue in on his way!! There is only one problem, Roc’s father, one of the original Khargals stranded on earth has retreated to his Duramna or stone form after Roc’s mother’s died during childbirth, and his Sigil is nowhere to be found. The time is ticking, if Roc cannot find the Sigil on time, it will auto-destruct. In his quest to find the Sigil, Roc discover Meline, the descendant of one his father human friend.
And that my friend is how this adventure starts 😊 This book has everything I love, is a fast-paced, great sex, full of action romance with a smart kick-ass heroine that knows how to get s**t done. I had a s**t eating grin the whole time I was reading this book.
Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Roc isn't your typical Thief, he's a thief with a conscience and a Khargal to boot... born on earth to a human mother and a Khargal father, one of the many that was stranded on earth a thousand years ago... but after struggling to fit in with humans and the ever so dull and grumpy 'pure bread' Khargals, Roc is now a master at blending in and not being seen. Having oodles of money and being secretive has helped.

After discovering that the purebreds sigils ( aka space beacons ) have activated, Roc has no choice but to seek out his long sleeping father and tell him that he can return home to Duras. Roc just needs to find his father and the sigil first. He will start by tracking down the descendants of his fathers friend, who were entrusted with the sigil. Never one to shy away from a challenge... breaking and entering into Meline's hotel room is easy... not breaking his or her heart is another matter.

Wowzer! I sure do love me a Stephanie West Book! Filled with action, kicking bad guy ass and the steamiest of love scenes... this book was blindingly good! and such a great an original read. 🙌🏻💯
I love how Roc's cocky swagger masked his inner turmoil over his human/Khargal self and the abandonment he felt at his fathers absence from his life.

A true gem of a heart literally wrapped around a crusty hard as stone shell, that was slowly revealed later by layer to the feisty angelic Meline who captures his heart!

These two were literally smoking HAWT 🔥🔥 and their interactions were filled with 'ALL THE FEELS' funny and heartbreaking.
Altogether a fantastic instalment in this much anticipated shared World Series, that will keep sci fi romance readers stuck to their reading devices.

This is an OK sci-fi alien romance. Meline was likable, but Roc was hard to like at first. This book gets 3 stars from me -- it might have gotten more if Roc had been more likable.

Roc was OK, but it bothered me that he was such a man-whore. He didn't seem to understand that getting women drunk so they wouldn't be turned off by his alien features was totally uncool. It also bothered me that he planned to use Meline in the beginning -- that changed when he fell for her, but still.

For those who care, this book does contain some steamy sex scenes, and one very odd kinky one. While this is typical of books from this genre, the one kinky scene really bothered me. I won't give spoilers, but it was just too weird, and kind of creepy.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

This is a good continuation of the series focused on Roc, the Khargal introduced in Gravel and Grit. You don’t need to read that one first to understand this one.

Stephanie West can certainly write a hot scene. The sex scenes were progressively hotter and hotter throughout the book. There are also some creative uses of food... 😉

Another positive is that the focus of this book matches up with Roc’s personality. He is a carefree playboy type, and the book shows that. Since he is half Khargal, he is not quite as serious or concerned about getting back to the Khargal home as others.

The world building is not quite as seamless as in Gravel and Grit. There is frequent repetition of terms and definitions within narration or dialogue. This can seem very unnatural; for example, at one point Roc defines a Khargal term while talking to another Khargal. I think the other Khargal would know the term.

As far as the romance between the MCs, it felt a little choppy to me. The H is not instantly attracted the h when he sees a picture of her. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just not my preference. Later, the H makes comments to the h that show how attracted he is to her, but I felt like he expressed feelings verbally that were more intense or more complimentary to her than the feelings we saw in his thoughts.

There are also some simplistic elements in the plot. The prime examples would be **spoilers past this point** that Roc goes to find his father and coincidentally runs into the heroine in the process. He also coincidentally overhears her telling a complete stranger about her ancestor, who, coincidentally, is exactly the person Roc needs to track down.

Although he flirts with her, she pursues him. She propositions him, but he rejects her at first, not wanting to hurt her. Of course, she doesn’t know his reason. Soon after, the zipper on her dress coincidentally gets stuck, and she asks him to unzip her dress. I guess I’m different, because if a man had just rejected me, I’d figure out a way out of the dress without inviting him to help. Then, she’s tipsy and in a bubble bath and drops shampoo in the bath, causing a bubble mountain that coincidentally brings Roc back in the bathroom, where she coincidentally stands up and doesn’t realize at first that the bubbles no longer cover her. Then, SHE kisses HIM. Although there are a lot of coincidences, this bothered me mostly because I was still hurt for her from when he rejected her. As mentioned above, though, the following scene is very nice 😊

I liked the book as part of the Khargals series, and will continue to read the other books in the series.

He's like rock candy... A little crunchy, but really sweet.

So, this is actually the third book in this series I've read and I was not at all disappointed! We met Roc in the previous book Gravel and Grit (Zaek's book) as the smart mouthed and (to Zaek at least) rather irritating younger Karghal hybrid. I rather enjoyed him with Zaek and enjoyed getting to see their encounter from the other side in this book. The two author's quite obviously worked closely (and well) together to make this happen. You can also tell that the whole group of author's did a good job setting out guidelines since the three I have read flow very well together (I've also read Sticks and Stones so far).

Roc was an excellent example of an antihero. He's a thief and a very good one at that. But he's also the rob from the rich to give to the poor type as he has an obviously deep seated distaste for wealthy people (I can relate here as my youth has left me with some scars I'm constantly trying to overcome). That being said, I found him vastly relatable despite the stealing thing. ;)

Meline was an interesting character. She wasn't exactly a kickass heroine to start with, but she wasn't meek as a lamb either. I enjoyed her very 'normal' working girl character and getting to see her grow into herself throughout the book. She was sweet but also strong.

Their relationship moved fast, but then, the whole fated stuff always does. Mrs. West did a good job of making it feel natural. I really REALLY enjoyed the acceptance and vulnerability her characters managed to display. I also loved the part of the story that dealt with Roc's sire and the lack of training he gave his offspring in regards to many things.

Overall, a very enjoyable, very steamy read. I highly suggest!

What a great series !!!

We were introduced to Roc in the previous book in this series GRAVEL and GRIT , the story about Zarek and his mate Mira . She's , what a rollercoaster that was !! And this one was as well in its own way !
In this book Roc is in the procurement business . Meaning he is a glorified art thief . As a hybrid Khargal, he has many traits of his Sire including the horns and tail , wings and the ability to turn into stone. He has learned from his friend that the Khargals have activated the beacon, and all Khargals will be rescued. Only problem is that his Sire has been buried for a very , very long time , and the building he was buried in is being demolished. So he has to find his father AND collect his Sigil ! Kind of hard to do , since he is not entirely sure where his father is exactly!!
Meline is the great , great relation to a famous builder . She unknowingly has information that Fox needs in order to find his father. As Roc over hears this information, he decided to help her , help him .
If only it were that simple !!!
This story was exciting and witty and funny. I am looking forward to reading more about these KHARGALS 😀😀😀

*WARNING* contains explicit adult sexual situations
Roc is a hybrid, half Khargal and half human. Roc was born on Earth after his Sire was stranded on Earth a thousands of years ago. Now that the tracker has started working and the rescue ship is on it's way to pick up the stranded Khargals, Roc has to find his Sire, wake his Sire, retrieve an old alien artifact all before the rescue.
Milane leads a dull life as a travel agent who has never traveled anywhere. Milane has a little money left from settling her parents estate, so she is going to take a drive to try to find out more about her ancestors.
Khargals/aliens are the same as gargoyles for us earthlings and that alone makes the book worth reading for me. The story has action in, evils wanting to use the aliens as lab experiments. There is loss, love, steamy alien stuff, and of course romance. Hard as Rock has everything you could ask for in a SFR.

First I'll start with what confused me, his mating behavior & how it manifests is different from the first book. It might be an accident by author or maybe it was because he was a different kind of Khargal, I'm not sure. Other than that I enjoyed the book. Meline was a plain Jane who wanted to travel & after her parents death wanted to dig into family history. Roc was actually douchey at first. The playboy type with lots of notches on his bed post. His first reaction to Meline is she's actually not his type & bland but he over hears her talking about an ancestor who knew his sire so he hatched a plan to follow her & get location of the sigil. Their meet-cute happens in a book store as meline thinks she is being followed by a stranger... not long after that the secret society enters the scene & we're off on our adventure.

Hard as Rock

A fun story about gargoyles who are actually aliens. I enjoyed visiting Quebec City and surrounding areas. My favorite line is when they go to say goodnight to each other and he turns her away,

“You know what, no, I don’t know that it’s not a good idea. You flirted with me half the evening, and well, I just thought, hey, why not. It’s not like I have delusions we’ll spend one night together, and suddenly you’d profess your undying love for me, I’d move here, and we’d live in a little house with a white picket fence and have a litter of children,” she huffed.

He spends much of the book failing to tell her things she needs to know and not listening to some of her great ideas. Which just goes to show that living for centuries doesn't really make anyone any smarter than those who don't.

This book Rocks!
I’m really falling for these gravel-crunching guys! Roc is half human, half Khargal. Circumstances prevented him from learning about all things Khargal, although he learned about his clan’s special abilities. When he meets Meline in his quest to find his Sire’s sigil, he couldn’t resist the temptation. I like that she is not a stunning beauty, and is a bit of a klutz. Meline is quite a woman! Even though she is being followed, she handles the situation well. She takes the astonishing reveal of his true form without falling apart. And, she is just as protective of Roc as he is of her. Surrounded by danger, Roc does all within his power to keep her safe, including some things of which he’s not even aware. This is a love story that transcends species. Such excellent reading!

Another tail

This was a great addition to this series. I love how each author keeps their own voice while still making the stories feel intermingled and carry a similar feel. This story was great with plenty of how and downs. Roc was hot and crafty and had plenty of his own issues to deal with. His struggle with being stuck between two societies and how that affected him was described well. And while Meline didn't ask some questions I feel like I probably would have all her reactions were still realistic without being over dramatic. She has her own issues too but she was able to grow through them and become stronger. And once again the tail may have been one of my favorite parts. Excitingly good book filled with sci-fi , romance , action and suspense; would recommend.

Meline and Roc

She has two weeks Vacation and she’s headed to Quebec to research her ancestors. While making inquiries at a church she is overheard by Roc mentioning the exact ancestor he has been looking for descendants. He sneaks into her room hoping to find her research papers. When they finally meet in person he invites her to a party he’s giving.

This isn’t a meet cute but Roc is honest with her pretty quickly about his searching and her ancestor but he doesn’t admit that he’s a living gargoyle. When she does find out she takes it pretty well.

I enjoyed these two together. They mostly worked together rather than sniping at each other until they fall into bed. I will be reading further in this series.

Loved this story of Roc and Meline

To my great surprise and pleasure I actually saved one of the best books in the series for last. Roc is actually a hybrid Khargal of Earth and begins a quest to find his sire Petronus after finding out from another Khargal friend that they are about to be rescued. His sire has been in hibernation for so long Roc has been unable to locate him but after eavesdropping on a Meline at his sire's last known position he sets out to see just what Meline may know as she is a descendant of friend from their past. Unfortunately for both the Rose Syndicate was not far behind.

I loved the characters the author introduced us to in this exciting and fast paced tale.

Hard on the Outside......

Hard on the outside, soft inside.
This is the second Bk in the "Khargal of Duras" series, but my third read from the series as I've already read Tamsin Ley's "Sticks and Stones" Bk4, and I can honestly say that I'm not disappointed so far.
In this book we get to read more about our resident hybrid gargoyle, Roc's history, and the human female Meline, who brings out all his protective instincts and so much more.
This is a well written addition to the "Khargal's of Duras" series, that I will definitely be acquiring the next book in this series, "Heart of Stone"
Well done Ms West.

Very enjoyable

Roc, the human/Khargal hybrid has lost a lot. His human mother, his Khargal sire - he's got nobody to love and nobody loves him. The he meets Meline. She's an ordinary gal, a travel agent, an orphan, not a beauty... Roc doesn't care. When he meets her he succumbs to the bizarre longing she produces in his *ahem* mating gland. And then the action, the adventure, and Roc's coming of age fill this book with trauma, drama, passion and a body count. It's quite a tale, and well worth reading.

I read this book as the second one and felt this one should be the second one, because the main character in this book is introduced in the first book. I also didn't realize that this series was made up of different authors until seeing that this is supposedly the third book and that the different authors don't all have deals with kindle unlimited.

Anyways just like the first book this one has genuine reactions, from the main characters, to events thrown at them and I really enjoyed how it played out.

Another excellent book from this author.

Her take on this shared world of Khargals takes up an interesting question - what do the half-breeds do when it comes time to leave the planet? I really like Roc and Meline. Both are lost and alone, needing more from life than what they have. Their meeting is not by chance, even though it was. Fate played a hand and the tale takes off from there.

(I really want to know what happens to them on Duras.)

This was so action packed. I loved how a normal human bags the hot art thief. The sex scenes had me wishing my man was home. Whew! I really liked how Patroneous’s story was told. A father and son reunite. Duras here we come! These two Khargals didn’t have as much technological advances. The evil Rose Syndicate cronies strike again. I wish we had seen how they were received on Duras. If Patroneus’s mate was still there- what his reception was and if she accepted his son.

I am loving the Khargals. Each story is unique and Hard as Rock is no exception. It has humor, great gargoyle sex and a lot of action. Roc was born on earth to Petronus and a human mother. Meline goes on vacation with her grandfather's journal looking for answers. And of course the Rose Syndicate is watching their every move and trying to get the sigil. I thoroughly enjoyed Roc and Meline's story.

Omg superb!

The story of Meline and Roc, rocked my world! Sexy gargoyle meets his mate in a fantastic adventure. The backstory of how the Khargals came to be stranded on earth leads to a very exciting tale of love and intrigue. I loved this second book in the series as much as the first!

Meline goes to Montreal to visit the places her ancestors are from when she meets Roc who is part human from his Mother and part Khargal from his Dad. The story has suspense, drama, danger, villains, and romance. A well written story that held my interest throughout. I read a copy through K U and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

I will never look at a carrot in the same way...

Oh boy, Milene and Roc are the two lovebirds in the second book and the chemistry is out there! Foodplay has a new meaning for me now, thank you very much hahaha. Adventurous and living up to the promise of the first book. Now the third is by a different author, I hope it will stay this good!
