Siren Magic

Rate this book
A starry-eyed siren. One hot shifter. Fearsome vamps. And fairies with egos ten times their size. As a hybrid shapeshifter—half siren, half angel—Selene is one of a kind. It’s a label that makes her the target of a rebel faction of supernatural creatures that seeks to claim her power. Power that is undeveloped and more a danger than anything. Soon Selene is on the run in an unfamiliar world, unable to return to her ocean home. At least she’s not alone. Quinn, a shifter with his own secrets, has her back. They’re going to need to work together to survive their enemy’s magic—and most of all, their own. Siren Magic is the start of an exciting new magic-filled urban fantasy in the Magical Creatures Academy world.

While I was instantly sold on the premise alone - a siren angel hybrid in a world full of magical creatures! - the execution left me rather stationary. The entire first half of the book takes place between: a front stoop, a couch on the patio, and a couch in the living room (and that is no exaggeration). Between these three very close-in-proximity locations, most of the “action” is conversation revolving around Selene insisting how she knows nothing about her unexplored magic and sirangel heritage while the experienced magical beings (shifters, fae, and a witch) insist that she simply must know about what she is capable of (and this theme continues well into the final scenes of the book). The amount of times that Selene has to repeat herself that she doesn’t know anything about any powers she might have because of her unique heritage is ridiculous considering the wisdom the two faeries, the witch, and Irving the shifter (whose care she was put in) have of the supernatural world. At least there was a consistency not only in Selene’s repetition, but also in her actions as she tried to figure out what her magic could be, with varying results. I also don’t think I’ve heard the word “ignoramus” used more than once by one character referring to themself in a book – here, I got treated to it three times! At least it was most often in the context of Selene wishing she did not sound like as much of an ignoramus as she comes across instead of using it to belittle herself entirely.
When things do get moving, it is because all of a sudden a horde of power-hungry supernaturals is on its way to steal Selene’s unique magic. Yes, you read that right – it literally has a build up to that moment of “A horde of supernaturals is on its way to take your power. They’re getting closer. They’re getting closer. They’re here!” scattered throughout the contradictorily calm conversation between the supernaturals about Selene’s heritage, abilities, and the strange and obvious connection between her and Irving’s nephew Quinn, who is of a mysterious hybrid shifter heritage as well. It is only then, easily halfway through the book, that we start really learning more about Selene and the other creatures and the world they inhabit. This includes her mysterious connection to Quinn, who is clearly going to play an important role in Selene’s life (and probably romantic at that - yay fabricated and presumably-love connection!) – though his role/presence in this book is considerably smaller than the blurb led me to believe. He gets thrown out of the story (pretty much literally) not long after halfway through when the action finally starts happening.
As for the narration, I found it just fine – Ms. Marcin does a good job relaying the story, and I had little trouble following it. I would just say that her ‘older male’ voices (especially Irving and Sir Lancelot) sounded essentially the same – for me, that was more noticeable than the blend of female voices.
So while I was left decidedly underwhelmed by this book (long before) finishing it – barely a quarter into it, I decided it would not be worth spending the short time I have with a friend who is coming to visit me in listening to this story together – I am nonetheless curious about how it might progress and hopefully improve. How will Selene discover her powers since she is the only known one of her kind? What will her powers be considering her mixed heritage of siren and angel? Will her connection with Quinn indeed be an insta-romantic-true-love connection? What sort of a shifter is Quinn? Just what nefarious deeds will Naomi the witch pursue knowing what she does of Selene? (and Why didn’t Irving want Selene to go to the Magical Creatures Academy? Why did Mileunu (the sea witch – I’m totally guessing on how to spell her name here) send Selene to land and to Irving anyways?
I have not read any of Ms. Ashta’s other works, so taking this as an introduction to her Magical Creatures world is just fine and didn’t leave me feeling lost or floundering in any way. For a 5 hour listen, it is a short, easy read/listen, but could have been shorter without really losing much. Having not yet read the second book, I could easily see the two combined into a fuller story: this is more of an Act I of III in one novel than a Book 1 of 3. That said, I’m curious to read/listen to the second book in the series, to see where things are going, see if things start looking up, though I’m not as excited about getting into it as I was initially getting into this one.
I received a free Audible copy of this from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Favorite quote:
“I’ve seen things upon the seas that I scarcely believed.” [Irving said.]
“You?” Quinn asked. “You’re the most believing person I’ve ever met. You even believe in Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster.”
“Of course I do. If we exist, if they exist,” he pointed at the fairies, “if a half-siren, half-angel exists, why shouldn’t they?”
No one replied. It seemed like a pretty strong point to me, especially since it had never occurred to me to disbelieve anything. Life was so much more pleasant believing in its magic. Why would anyone want to doubt it?

I love the idea of this series, so I am sticking with it.
Selene is an 18F half siren/angel paranormal who has never left her home in the ocean, never been without her mer like tail or been on dry land before. She finds herself away from home, with legs and on dry land. Meets Quinn an estimated 18M half shifter/? At his uncles house. And they have an insta connection, interest right now, and not so much lust or love.

The first chapter I chuckled at the events and her inner dialogue, I am not sure I should have laughed but when she scolds herself for letting her last thoughts before death be a sarcastic comment I couldn't help it.
Soon afterwards, we are introduced to faie fairy's, witches, vampires, and mentions of more out there, and most want the FMC power.
There is witt and action and cringe moments... Despite the action and fast change in events in the first book, I did get bored sometimes. But I have just come out of reading some deliciously dark trigger high books plus a smutty light paranormal book.... so it may just be the switch to a more young adult finding themselves with less darkness and a more light fantasy humorous world that jars me.

Aren't we lucky that Ms. Ashta has so much imagination inside? Siren Magic is the latest entry in a series coming from Ms. Ashta. Sirangel is the story of Selene who started out the day as a mermaid but upon being transported ashore, lost her tail and instead got legs. Not just an ordinary mermaid but, rather, a siren. Alas,.Selena is not just a siren but also an angel. A new breed, with new problems, among them, since she is a half breed of a new kind, there is no one to know what to expect her powers to be or even teach her to use those powers.

Selene's arrival has been noted in the magical world and many are coming to see this new species and perhaps take control of her powers which seem to be quite expansive.

Selene is a novice in this world having never had powers of any sort before and her adventure is just beginning.

This is a fantastic start to a new series! A siren / angel, Selene is a hybrid shapeshifter like nothing seen of before! A fantastic storyline filled with twists and turns, this will have you on the edge of your seat as Selene try’s to avoid capture from other supernatural who want her powers! This truly is a magical read with fab characters and I can’t wait to read the next Book!

This book apparently took place within hours of the fmc first step on the front porch. It all went downhill from there. No #2 for me.

What a fun diversion from the more serious reading I've been doing lately. However, I hate reading about yet another mermaid, not in the water. That's my inner spirit. I miss swimming so much!

In this case, the mermaid is part angel. And she knows nothing about any of her powers and is put in a totally new situation to her—legs on land, with wings.

It was an excellent bedtime book. It was exciting while soothing. So much so that I had to pick up the next book and started reading it last night.

If you like the occasional fantasy and don't mind a young adult bent, this would be fun for you, too.

From beginning to end this book is like a magical roller coaster - you can barely catch a breath before the next loop gets you and you're diving then swooping (these words are so appropriate to this book) through a new discovery or development.

I am utterly in awe of not only the incredibly detailed stories (with plot within plot within plot within plot) that Lucia creates but also how marvelously they are written – you feel the angst, the confusion, the sadness, the fears and you run the full gamut of emotion with the characters – except for those whose motives must remain hidden until the final reveal. And her execution is just so blooming poetic! I am quite convinced that Lucia Ashta possesses a deep magic herself.

The depiction of the different parts of the world that Selene finds herself in, the description of every situation and every character is so clear and so incredibly detailed that it's quite easy to feel like a bit of a voyeur as you travel through the pages.

I enjoyed Selene so much and her very real reactions to the situations she finds herself in and the special people she meets. I love that she’s not seemingly exceptionally brave (at least not as a naturally inherent quality) but that she does have moments of exceptional bravery stemming from a real quality of genuinely caring for others. I also think there’s more fire inside her than even she realizes. I so look forward to getting to know her better.

I loved most of the characters in this book – the exception being quite specifically a dodgy, selfish creature who might, or might not, end up surprising me. But I doubt it because the level of… distaste… I have for her feels quite limitless at this point. But I will enjoy being proven right. Hopefully…

As the beginning of a new series, this first installment is… magic. And it bodes so well for what’s to come. I wish it was sooner – June is forever away!

This book would have benefited from being a children's book, I think. Or straight erotica.
This reminded me of books written by my friends in middle school. Selene is a text book Mary Sue and her inexplicable connection with Quinn is just a lazy excuse for not being able to write characters who have actual chemistry.
Cool that she's super powerful and doesnt even know it. and also she has naturally purple hair, of course.
I think a good writer could do more with 220 pages than this. This whole book takes place over the course of like an hour. Practically the whole thing was filled with characters bickering for no reason. It should have been compacted into a prologue for the next book. If the author edited out all the useless dialogue, it would have been about 45 pages long.
This book was a gift and I read it because it was really short, but I honestly hated it. Right down to the title, it's really poorly done.
I gave it two stars because I can picture this story being a Ghibli movie. I think that's the only format it would work in. Also, I found myself getting attached to some of the characters, namely Naomi, despite all of the characters have a maximum of two total traits a piece.

Looking forward to the next book

Everything has been interesting so far, nuts wish .more information had been laid out in this first book. We get a cursory look at this work and Selene. Arlene is a very naive half siren half angel. She is Christ into land by their clan leader. She has. Only ever lived as a mermaids. Now she has to get used to legs, suddenly wings and possibly magic. Before she finds out what as t she is, she is already being hunted by numerous dangerous creatures. The clan leader sent her to a dangerous, but friendly shifter to assist her, though she gets separated from him after only a few hrs. She makes a soul connection to the nephew Quinn, who is also a unique combo, though .oh one knows what kind. I'd think even living in the ocean, she'd understand more about people's natures good and bad. Looking forward to next book. Glad entire series is out, reading a book sections at a time is annoying. This is a single POV paranormal read. She has a potential love interest and several protectors/enemies.

Innocence is beautiful, but totally useless in a war.
And Selene now appeared directly in the middle of one.
Being the daughter of a siren and an angel, she was an outcast most of her life, and now was sent on land clueless of her true nature and the magic she possesses. However, facing the threats of the supernatural world, her magic awakens and the two fairies, one mean witch, one dangerous shifter, and another hybrid help her understand what following her instincts may accomplish.
Welcome to Magical Creatures Academy, Sirangel.
Nice starter of a new series, and a fast read. I must admit I did not really like Selene at the beginning, she was simply so lost and so naive I found her dumb and had the urge to facepalm myself. Though it makes for a large potential to change and develop, and that's what makes her interesting - that, her magic and legacy, and the connection to Quinn.
So I'll just wait and see what the next book brings :)

I voluntarily review an ARC.
This is the first book of the Sirangel series. The books should be read in order.
There's no need to read the previous series by Lucia Ashta Magical Arts Academy before. You might already know some characters and institutions, but this isn't important to enjoy this new series.
How would you feel if you lived eighteen years as a siren almost without magic and on your first day on land you get legs and wings, learn confusing new stuff about the supernatural world and are confronted with unknown enemies. Well, this sounds exhausting.
I loved the fast paced writing style, the many mysteries, the interesting characters and can't wait to read the next part of this magical series.

Siren Magic is book 1 in the Sirangel series. Lucia Ashta has again brought her amazing imagination and creativity to bear in the creation of this first in series . Her character development, storyline, and awesome plot are so well done you are drawn into the story from the beginning and become so involved that you do not want to leave until the last page just to have a strong desire for more. This is a rollercoaster ride with lots of ups and downs, twists and turns, and a real page turner. I am excited to see what amazing adventure Lucia will take us on next in the sequel. If you are looking for an awesome read with lots of magical creatures, I whole heartedly recommend this book. Received a copy and this is my voluntary review.

Another great book by Lucia Ashta!!

As always, I really enjoyed this book by Lucia Ashta. She's great at character development...so much so that your sad to get to the end of a character's storyline. The only reasons I gave this a 4 star reviewI was 1) even though this is a stand alone story, you can tell that you've missed a lot of the characters story because you didn't read the series previous to this one. I'll definitely be going back to read the Magical Creatures Academy to get caught up.... 2) I would have liked to see more of a conclusion to parts of story. I know it's the beginning of a series, but this one just didn't feel as complete as some of her other works. That said, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

I really liked half siren, half angel—Selene she knows shes a fish out of water when she ends up at Irving's place on the word of the Sea Witch Mulunu. And her being part Angel is a shocker because they don't breed like other paranormals. Quinn was so awesome with the way he trys to protect her and I cant wait to find out what he is. And to be completely honest I think that Fianna the Crimson and Nessa the Sapphire the fairies, who stripped of naked to take a bath in tea cups, I loved that scene btw probably my favorite and Naomi the Witch stole the book. and the Cameo by Sir Lancelot who I just love was great.

I received this audiobook in return for leaving a review.
Selene starts as a mermaid, she is sent on a ‘coming of age’ type trip to the surface by the leaders her people. There she ends up shunned by a house, caught off guard, confused, and unsure how to use her newly acquired legs. Queue fight for your life because being completely new in a foreign place is not enough! And let’s not forget the wings sprouting from her back before she’s even used to the legs. She meets shifters, fairies, witches, and even a vampire along the course of her journey for safety, but who should she trust and what is actually safe?

What an amazing start to a series.

A coming of age rite sends Selene to Irving, almost killing her in the process and alerting the entire supernatural community to her existence. Selene is one of a kind, part siren part angel and everyone wants her for their own purposes; now that they know about her.

With Witches, Vampires, fairies (who bathe in teacups) and shifters, this is a series not to be missed.
Oh, did I forget to mention that Sir Lancelot also makes an appearance? Anyone who has read Lucia's Witching World or MAA series's will be familiar with the delightful Sir Lancelot.

AN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING ADVENTURE!!!
OMG! Talk about totally rocking this new series from the start. Lucia once again leaves me in awe. Such depth and individuality. Strong characters, amazing storyline with an outstanding plot keeps you immersed till the end. Twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few glitches and scrapes really bring this bad boy roaring to life flawlessly. The characters and scenes are written with such realism it's easy to get drawn into this incredibe work of art. Remarkable job Lucia, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

Fantastic start of a new series!!! ❤️... So magical!!!... Selene is send to land, totally out of her element and hit with surprise after surprise, her innocence is adorable but can lead her to a lot of danger!!! 😨... She will have to trust magical creatures she just met, to discover and learn to use her powers... Shifters, fairies, witches, wizards, hybrids and, or course, the bad guys that are chasing her... I'm eager to discover all the adventures Selene and her new friends will have, can't wait for book 2!!! ❤️🤓

I am in love with this world!

Each book I've read within this world is so full of magic and wonder. There is the danger factor that keeps the book entertaining, but I believe that even without that element, I would be captivated by the book.

Selene is thrown into a world so foreign to her, she can't even get used to her new legs before something else is thrust into her lap. New found friends and enemies both seen and unseen make for a very enchanted read. I look forward to more stories within this world.

Siren Magic

Wow a great and amazing starting book for Siren Magic part of the Magical Creatures Academy World. Such a great magical story about a hybrid of Angel and Siren who doesn’t know what magic she’s capable of. Doesn’t know how she fits into the world but finds she’s already connected to another type of hybrid. The story draws readers into the mystery of magical creatures and how their enemies are drawn to the unique magical abilities and powers they have. Looking forward to the next chapter

Excellent engaging read

This book starts out as many of hers do, a very naive young girl thrown into a very different unknown world, the reader almost thinks they know how the story will progress and is very predictable. As you read though, you get very entrapped into the story and cannot wait to find out just what this hybrid siren/angel’s powers are!

This is certainly a series of books to read!

Bleh

How did this book get more than 4 stars. I had to stop at chapter 9 , I couldn’t get through this garbage. I can’t stand super wordy books that use words as extra fluff to elongate their books. And while the idea of this book seemed interesting, I could already tell the follow through would not be nor would this book get to the point till probably the last couple chapters. Garbage.

Siren Magic Magical Creatures Academy book 1

This was another winner. I read another series of hers and loved it. This one is just as good as the other one was. A girl that is part siren and part Angel. She spent 18 years in the water and now has legs and Angel wings. This author writes wonderful characters and great storylines in every book. I highly recommend all her books. Diana Romano
