Cabezón—a Spanish word that can mean pigheaded, stubborn, heady, potent and lethal.

Vicente

Sometimes dreams were deceiving and the difference between doing the right thing or spriraling down the wrong path boiled down to one thing—survival.
I grew up in extreme poverty.
A walking statistic.
An undocumented immigrant.
Life’s circumstances hardened me.
Reality crushed my notions that angels existed.
Until I saw her…
I wanted to hate her.
I wanted to hurt her.
I wanted to find my salvation in her.
I just…wanted her.
But she wasn’t mine.
She was my brother’s girl.

Dani and her mother live a very transient life. Dani is a good student, works hard, does her homework and keeps her home life private. Unfortunately, intuitive and observant staff at her school always seem to notice something about her. This leads to questions and then her mother rapidly moving them to a new town to start all over again.

On one occasion, when Dani is called to the school office she sees a boy. A beautiful boy who is being enrolled at her school, she has never seen a boy with such striking features. Over the following week she catches glimpses of him and they share a secret smile, each time their eyes connect. Then one day they finally talk to each, Dani is filled with elation and bubbles of excitement fizzle in her tummy. She had no idea that she wouldn’t see him again for many years.

It would be fair to say that Dani had a very rough childhood. Her mother lost sight of her parenting responsibilities and lived a very selfish and reckless existence. This lead to Dani living with her grandmother for a long time. In her final year of high school she moves back with her mother to her old hometown settling into her senior year and makes friends with Lily Mendoza.

Through her friendship with Lily she also meets her brothers. Emilio soon makes a play for Dani, he is a smooth talker and makes her feel special. She enjoys joking around and hanging out with him. The only down side of being at their house is his older brother Vince. He is basically an argumentative, arrogant arsehole and is so damn rude to Lily. However, he is also so freakishly handsome that Lily can’t stop looking at him and thinking about him. It completely infuriates her. There is just something about him that pulls at her and she knows it’s wrong because she has a sweet boyfriend.

When Lily discovers something about the Mendoza family that goes completely against her moral compass she know she has to cut ties with them and focus on her future. Off to college she goes and eventually she finds herself with a successful career, doing what she loves. Life is going really well for Dani. When a lucrative business opportunity comes her way she is excited about what doors this will open up for her. Until she opens the door and Vince Mendoza is on the other side.

There is no way she will ever work with Vince Mendoza and to makes matters worse, he is even more luscious now, 10 years since she last saw him. As Dani, deals with her conflicting emotions, her need to financially survive and desire to further her career, Vince persistently tries to worm his way into her life. She is no longer his brother’s girl, which means he can finally have what he always wanted – her. However, convincing Dani of this will be his greatest challenge yet.

This was a very different story from Rose Croft. It is a love story but is also laced with a bit of suspense and lots of angst. Both lead characters have very complex back stories that shaped them into who they are now and this makes their eventual union feel much like redemption. I was completely invested in this story and enjoyed every moment ☺

Rose Croft is one of those authors that for some reason catch my attention instantly. And I love to continue reading her books. I'm glad to had the opportunity to receive this arc in exchange for my honest review.

"Even buried in life's ugliness, you could always find something beautiful."

This is the first book in this series and can be read as a standalone. Vince and Dani lived very sad moments in their childhood. Vince and his family decide to cross the US border in search of a better future. There are many vicissitudes they faced. The death of his mother, a drugdealer stepfather who pursues them to collect certain favors and all the dangers involved in participating in the underworld.

Dani was the forbidden girl. Vince's attraction to Dani was undeniable. And his struggle between doing the right thing and being dominated by his feelings brings some drama to the story. However, the decision that Dani makes will take her away from the Mendoza family, but then the universe conspires to meet again and get a new and clean opportunity. The reservations that Dani has about the person Vince has become will put some resistance, which adds more enthusiasm to the encounter between them.

The story is emotional, inspiring. Vince and Dani pursued their dreams and persevered in many areas. Getting a beautiful happy ever after.

Rose Croft is not a new to me author. What is new to me from Rose is Cabezon. It is different from her other two books, Baseball Lover and High School Lover, yet still carries the same quality that we know and love from her as an author.

Ms. Croft has delivered a book that is chock full of emotions, extremely informative to socioeconomic issues in other countries as well as here in the states along with a beautiful storyline that was full of angst. I was hooked, and I wanted more. Cabezon had me crying, shocked, intrigued, sympathetic, it was thought provoking and finally elation! I was riding a positive book high for days! Now don’t get me wrong, there are many deep themes and situations that our characters encounter, such as atonement and adversity, to get that ever elusive happily ever after.

Vince is surrounded by his 2 bothers, sister, Aunt, Uncle & 2 cousins. It is shortly after we meet the family that his Aunt, Uncle and two cousins go to live in the US. Teresa, Vince’s mom, who is extremely pregnant, was reluctant to go as they were entering the states via coyotes. Teresa decided to stay and not risk it.

Vince is a very sweet boy who looks up to his mother and in his eyes, she could do no wrong as she works long hours to take care of her family. Shortly after her sister left, his mom goes into labor and something happens. It is on this day as a six-year-old little boy that Vicenta Gabriel Garcia Mendoza grew up.

Dani Mendenhall is not a weed to be discarded, but a person with an extremely kind and caring heart. Despite what might appear like polar social status, Dani and Vince are a lot alike. All it takes is for one temperamental, petulant and sullen teen/adult to drop all pretenses and not judge a book by its cover to see this. (Easier said than done). Dani is the epitome of hopefulness, forgiveness and continues to show what it takes to make one’s dreams come true, despite bumps in the road.

'She was gentle, kind and always sympathetic to people’s needs. But underneath it all was a strength and determination that sometimes left me in awe.'

Truthfully, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I read Cabezon. I didn’t expect it to enlighten me to cultural socioeconomic status, both here and abroad; display the fact that family does mean everything, even though there can be fighting or disagreements, in the end that family unit will unite and be stronger together than apart or what stripped down, no pretenses love is like.

'I now know all of the feelings that you stirred in me—the hate, lust, obsessiveness eventually melded into one thing. Love. I’m not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. However, my love for you is true and pure, so don’t ever doubt that.'

I have read all of Ms. Croft’s books, and while I loved her High School Lover and Baseball Lover books (hello, John is my boy), Cabezon is easily my ‘All Time Favorite’ of hers. It is so complex and intriguing, I. WAS. SUCKED. IN!! The depth that Rose achieved while writing this book is amazing and shows how much she has grown and developed her style. It was beautiful to watch!! Take a chance on Cabezon and get to know the Mendoza/Mendenhall families along their journey to forever.

While I did struggle a little with the fluidity of the in text translations over all I really enjoyed the hell out of this book. A story that centers around a strong and resilient immigrant family defying the odds? Yes please!

Vince was an asshole but that stemmed from being an idealistic child that was jaded to the world and it’s darkness in it. Dani was sweet but needy for safety and attention, all the things she lacked as a child. This is a story about two very broken and mistrustful people finding each other.

I loved being able to follow them chronologically, from childhood to adolescence and eventually adulthood. And while they didn’t communicate in a way I approved of and had horrible coping mechanisms I over all loved their story.

Cabezon had me hooked and didn't want to put this down! Vince has been through so much poverty and seen so much in his young life, and he had to survive to look after his family! Vince was a guy l wanted to hate for things he did and said, but then l wanted to love and hug him! Dani didn't go without her heartache as well, love her and her journey! A must read! Looking forward to reading more of the Mendoza family!

This was my first book by Rose Croft and for sure will not be the last. The span of emotions I felt while reading this has been a long time coming and wow! The characters were incredible and I found them to be just a little different and not the standard character I have come to traditionally read. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book

Vince and Dani’s story spans a decade. It’s the kind of love story that pulls you in and makes you root for the happily ever after. They were never supposed to be together. It’s a story of first heartbreak, second- chances and everlasting love. I can’t wait to read the next Mendoza Family novel!

Bravo.

The first time I saw a blurb about this book my interest was piqued. It screamed angst. What I didn't know was that it would become so much more than that. This is a story about redemption, overcoming obstacles, hardships, destiny, and finding love. The family connections were amazing. They weren't perfect, they fought, the had numerous differences, and they loved fiercely but at the end of the day, they were still family. Every character needs to have their story told. EVERY. ONE.

This story hit home for me, especially in light of current events in the world. The life that Vincente, Emilio, Adrain, Yo, and Lily endured broke my heart but their perseverance to have a better life inspired me. Sweet Dani, inspired me in her resilience and her forgiving heart. She hadn't lived an easy life. Yet she lived up to her name. She wasn't a weed to be discarded but was, in fact, someone who showed that wishes do come true. In the case of Vincente and Dani, they showed that hope and remaining steadfast to one's dreams can and does pay off.

I wasn't expecting that this book would knock me on my behind the way that it did. I just recently discovered this author. I appreciated her passion in the first book I read by her but there was definitely a lot of room to grow. That is by no means meant as a disparaging remark since I can in no way do what she does. There is a reason that I am a reader, not a writer. It just means that there was a lot of room to grow. And let me tell you, grow she did. It doesn't even seem like she is the same author. I look forward to watching her grow in her abilities as an author. Bravo, to this author for creating this fantastic story. I cannot way to read more from this series.

✨ DREAMY’S REVIEW ✨

My first book by this author and she sucked me from the very first pages!

Cabezón is about family dynamics, redemption, overcoming struggles, forgiveness, and finding love.

*****

Vince and Dani. Dani and Vince.

I loved their push and pull. I loved how their story was over a span of years, but it didn’t seem like the spark that is between them ever dimmed.

I enjoyed watching their love develop.

I loved Dani’s sassy, smart mouth. She’s feisty. She’s resilient. She stood her ground and even though Vince wasn’t the best to deal with, she held her own.

I loved how Vince was persistent. He knew where he went wrong and he wanted to correct that. And even years later, Dani did something for him.

They were never supposed to be together. But there was always that pull between them, that even when it’s years later, it’s hard to ignore.

*****

Croft has found a new reader in her corner and I am excited to see what she has in store! She is incredible and I can’t wait to follow her journey as a writer!

I really loved this book! Dani and Vince first met when they were just little ones. Looks and blushes that were sweet and so innocent until Dani’s mom made her leave over night. Years later she comes back and gets involved with Vince’s brother Emilio. They date for quite some time but there’s always something about Vince although Vince is a complete douchebag to her. It’s this connection between them that just won’t go away even though they try to fight it. When Emilio and Vince betray Dani, she runs. 10 years later she meets the brothers again but this time Vince finally makes his move.

I absolutely fell in love with the connection Vince and Dani had. I thought it was really well written and I loved that ending! I loved the family drama, the struggle and the people they have become now that they’re older. We see all the changes in this book and I loved it.

What can I say about Vince and his Dandelion? This story hooked me, it sucked me in and took me on a journey with these two characters.

They met as children, then again as teens and almost ten years later again as adults. They had a connection from the very beginning that followed them throughout their life, whether they liked it or not, and I was rooting for their happy ever after. They both face obstacles in their lives, they try to fight the attraction but it’s no use.
They’re not perfect people, they struggle and work hard to achieve success which makes them even more real. However their love jumps off the pages at you.

This was the first book I’ve read by Rose and she now has a fan for life. Her storytelling is incredible and I can’t wait for the second book in the series.

Phenomenal!

This is an absolutely phenomenal story from beginning to end! It had me completely and utterly captivated and highly entertained. It is one intense and very emotional rollercoaster ride that may have you throwing your kindle at the wall!!!

The writing and the storyline is fantastic. This amazing author just knows what words to use that will invoke hatred and love from her readers. There were many times where I wanted to kill Vince and other times when I was swooning over him! I loved Dani and Vince together. Their chemistry is off the charts and their interactions were highly combustible and explosive!! Their souls were made for each other and the pull they have to be together is otherworldly!

I can't express how much I loved this book - it was AMAZING!! I can't wait to read the next story.

Highly recommend.

I was hooked from the beginning. The cover and blurb drew me in and then the story latched on and would not let go. It had everything I love in a book: kind of a missed timing second chance like romance, an alpha hero who goes after what he wants and doesnt let anyone get in the way, and a family dynamic. I love stories that have a strong family presence (because it can mean more books about them).
I loved Vince and Dani's love story and also learning about Vince's background.
This was the first book I have read by Rose Croft and it definitely won't be the last.

I am pretty sure that I was hooked on this book from the moment that I read the title, “Cabezon.” This book was everything and more, I was hooked from the very first pages and was unable to put this book down. The story of Vince and Dani is not your typical romance story the journey that they both took to finally get to each other has all the feels. This story contains what you would expect from a Latin family, family bond, overcoming the odds, forgiveness, trusting and most of all believing that people can change. I loved the development of Vince from being the young boy to becoming a man, he had to grow up fast and from that he made some bad choices which in turn created his bad boy reputation. Dani the little girl who never really had someone to care about her until she went to live with her grandma, despite everything that she went through, she remains happy and truly wants to find the best out of each person. I am hoping that we get to have a story about the rest of the family (Lily, Adrian, Emilio) members because I am only left wanting to more. I can’t wait to read more books by Rose Croft. I highly recommend this book, it was a fantastic read.

Cabezon is book one in the Mendoza Family series by Rose Croft. It is an edgy, nail biting thrill full of suppressed devotion, betrayal and passionate, lusty lovin. Author Croft delivers a superb story that packs a punch and leaves a reader desperate for more. This colourful collection of diverse characters should not mesh together so well, but the contrasting differences make them connect so much better. It blew my mind and left me with immense satisfaction. 5 stars.

Such a beautiful ride , absolute angst in a bottle , and Vince and Dani are my new favorite characters.
Going through their childhoods , teens , and adult lives was such a great story in each chapter of their lives . It was heartbreaking , frustrating and edge of the seat angst . I loved all the build up and traumatic pasts and hardships they all faced . Issues of immigration, drugs , addiction and sex and violence are all included here and it was a beautiful story and I absolutely loved every moment.

This was an intriguing read for me as I had never read anything by this author before but I will certainly continue to do so after having read Cabezon. The writing is storytelling at its best and you are enmeshed into the lives of both Dani and Vicente and how their pasts have shaped their futures.
The book takes you through childhood to adulthood for both Dani and Vicente. Dani lives a transient life with her mother who doesn’t make the best choices in life. Whereas Vicente comes from a life of poverty, having to learn English as a child and trying to make ends meet as a teenager. Due to unforeseen circumstance Dani sees Vince and her boyfriend Emilio (Vince’s brother) do something which she finds unforgivable which ends up with Dani running away and starting a new life, only to pop up again in the future but this time Vince isn’t standing on the side-lines and he will do anything to have Dani.

This book takes you through what it is like to live in abject poverty, fight to save your family and become the person you should have been without all of the outside influences. There are some extremely sad moments in the book from both characters and the development of Vince and Dani’s relationship is interesting because they have always had a spark but Vince didn’t want to intervene since Dani was seeing his brother. It is also entertaining to watch Vince switch from vulnerable to strong when dealing with Dani and his feeling, yet sometimes he can be cruel and leave Dani a little bit in limbo.

If you enjoy emotional roller-coaster ride books then this one is for you. The strength of both of these characters is amazing as are the stories that both of them tell independently. It will also be interesting to see what happens with Emilio.

ARC received for a fair and honest review.

4 stars for Cabezon by Rose Croft. This is my first book by this author and this is an author I will definitely read again. This writer writes different from many others. I would say this is a mafia romance, friends to lovers and second chance romance if I had to label it. The book is sorta in three parts. Really far past, past and present. Dani has lived a transient life with her mother. She had a rough childhood and her first encounter with Vincent was when she was just a little girl and he was in the office at the school. Vincent is part of the Mendoza family and has made something of himself. He overcame the rough and humble beginnings he had. He wanted to change their lives and he did. He always had a thing for Dani but when he was going to speak up, she was with his brother. This book is a journey of how these two became who they are today. I loved both characters and how the author writes about their journeys. Dani is what I love in a heroine. She is strong and knows when you fight for herself. Vincent is dark and mysterious and really who does not love that is the hero of the story.
I felt like the book left my mind reeling. The author writes as if we are on the journey with these characters. My heart was claimed by these characters, and I felt every bit of it in my soul. It was just something about reading about Dani and Vincent’s life from when they were young, to high school to where they are now that makes you feel like you are apart of the story.
The cover of this book is amazing. The model on the front who is Vincent I presume is amazing. He is gorgeous and draws the eye. The blurb is what sealed the deal for me though. It made me want to read the story. It is what made me open the first page of the book and the writing is what kept me hooked. I was hooked from the start. I was kept on the edge of my seat. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a great romance. This is one for the ages.

Title: Cabezon
Author: Rose Croft
Genre: Contemporary Dramatic Romance
**RECEIVED ARC FOR HONEST REVIEW**
This is the first book I have read from this author and it has made me a fan.
At first I was intimidated because of the Spanish but it wasn't too bad once you got into the story. I admit I even cried a little bit while reading. This book follows our main characters from childhood through their late 20's. You feel their losses, devastations, anger, pain, loyalty, love, yearning, and hope, and ultimately...happiness. We watch as the characters endure social economic inequality and racism. So poignant for addressing struggles we currently see going on along the United States southern border.

This book gives you so much. You know heart and soul was put into the writing of the book. The narrative flows and you don't get confused on who is talking or what is going on. My only criticism is in the beginning around the time the characters are in high school a few scenes I had Dejavu or something. I really thought I had read a book with those scenes or very very similar. But there were only a few and the rest of the book was fine so no harm no foul.

Anyway, I cannot, and I mean I CAN NOT, wait for book 2. I am thrilled this author is making a second book. As I said, I am now a fan. Fantastic.
OH! Before I forget...5 out of 5 stars for sexiness.
5 out of 5 stars for dramatic tension.
5 out of 5 stars for writing. Only error..love stick...seriously? Don't use that term again please. Bathroom scene. Term not appropriate.

Cabezon is a Spanish word that can mean pigheaded, stubborn, heady, potent and lethal. Now with that for a meaning I was intrigued immediately.

Dani And Vicente or Vince had an intensely close connection from a very early age. This story of them starts when they were in grade four and five then continues for a number of years until both are adults. Their chemistry is off the charts and hard for them to deny each other. Dani was a sweet person but had an inner strength that she definitely needed, she didn’t hav3 an easy life and was an extremely hard worker. Vince struggled alongside his family but sheer determination and the willpower to succeed was the motivation necessary for him. He is strong but also arrogant and ruthless at times too.

This story has such a lot to it; trying childhoods with a lot of hardships and heartbreak, doing things tough but struggling through, having goals and aiming high, friendships and family ties as well as betrayal. Underlying that is the love story between the lead characters and it is an epic one too. I thoroughly recommend this to everyone and look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Where do I even begin to review this amazing story? There are so many things I can say, but it will never do this book justice. To be honest, this is the first book I've read by this author, and guaranteed it's not going to be the last. This story has you on pins and needles till the very last page.
Dani and Vicente... Vicente and Dani... I love them, I wanted to smack their heads together sometimes, I rooted for them the whole time and they did not disappoint!
Filled with twists and turns and hurdles to leap, these two had something from the very first moment they met. I loved watching their relationship develop, even if it meant waiting YEARS before finally having each other, not that I'm complaining. When they come together... man there aren't enough fans in the world. It's wild, it's passionate and full of lust, desire and an innate beauty that only true love brings out in other people.
Their worlds around them come together in so many ways, with so many people from their pasts wanting to tear them apart. Do they overcome the odds? Do they succeed in becoming the people they always wanted to be? I'll leave that decision up to you, but just know your heart will be beating out a samba before the book is over.

An incredible story from Rose Croft! I can't wait for Emilio's story!

Dani and Vince had my heart from the start! Their story definitely wasn’t a hearts and flowers kind of romance...it’s lustful, obsessive, tragic, heartbreaking, infuriating, and beautiful.

Two children, both growing up in less than great circumstances exchanged glances and smiles in passing, a few words spoken and a treasured token exchanged...nothing but a sweet memory.

Two teenagers who hated each other but were inexplicably drawn to one another, forbidden thoughts, and betrayal...nothing but a hurtful memory.

Two adults who reconnected, fighting a bond and attraction that was meant to be, learning to trust, giving into love...nothing but the promise of a future with wonderful memories.

This was my first Rose Croft book, won’t be my last, and I’m eager to dive into Book 2 of this series!

My first outing with Rose Croft but it won't be my last the Mendoza Family are one complex family and I can't wait to read more of them.

Dani and Vicente's family is really complex - Vicente and his family brothers sister and mom. were smuggled to the US from El Salvador when they were children. That was the first time he meet Dani fast forward 10 years and they meet again when they are in their late teens but Dani is now going out with Vicente's brother. Dani doesn't remember the boy from her youth but from the moment she meets Vicente again she can't deny the attraction although she is going out with his brother (there is no cheating in the book!). But the boys are into some shady dealings all to do with paying back a debt! When it spills over and impacts on Dani - she leaves without a word to go off to college.

Another 10 years on a Dani and the Mendoza family are reunited is the time now right for Dani and Vicente
