This hefty tome contains twenty-five pieces of varying length. Some are truly short-short, while some are farely long and detailed. Having read many of them in their previous iterations allowed me to rush through the collection. The prose was clear, simple, unpretentious, and to-the-point. They made the narratives even more effective.
Conclusion?
This is truly a very good collection of unsettling tales— yes, as unsettling as diseases of the teeth. They cover almost the complete gamut of horror~ Lovecraftian, psychological, physical, folk, mythical, real... you guess and there is one here.
For me, the high points were~
1. 2.23 A.M.
2. The Pyramid Spider
3. Day 34;
4. (the best one— featuring Nakata) The Terrible Deaths of the Ghosts of the Westmorland.
For an admirer of horror stories, this is a must-read collection.
