After having graduated as an engineer in mechanics, Oliveira left Brazil because of the military dictatorship that was in power at the time. He went first to Chile, but the following year saw the Chilean coup of 1973. This led Oliveira to leave, moving to Argentina, from where he finally returned to Brazil in 1974.
He found work as an illustrator in the advertising industry of São Paulo, before once more leaving Brazil, in 1981, this time moving to France, hoping to illustrate comics. However as the Franco-Belgian comics industry was in recession at the time, he was forced to work in advertising once again, although he managed to get the occasional piece published in L'Écho des savanes and Pilote.
In 1986, with the assistance of Jean-Claude Forest, Oliveira began contributing to the youth dedicated magazines of Bayard Presse. He illustrated true stories for Okapi magazine. He then recounted Mahatma Gandhi's life in the album Gandhi, le pèlerin de la paix, for Astrapi.
In 1988, the comics writer Rodolphe asked him to provide the artwork for his stories. Their collaboration proved fruitful, producing 8 albums of material for their Trent series and 5 for their Kenya one.
In 1993, Oleveira finally achieved an old dream when Dargaud agreed to publish his first solo series: Aldébaran. In 2000, after 5 volumes of Aldébaran, he launched Bételgeuse, which was nominated for the Prize for a Series at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2004.

Now here’s a very pleasant surprise indeed. A new Aldebaran series by Leo! It’s the fifth series in the saga to date and does the nifty trick of tying together the various plot threads and characters into a unified story.
Kim has been nominated by the alien species as their choice for official first contact between themselves and humans, an outcome that has made Kim instantly famous on both Aldebaran and Earth. The aim is to jointly investigate the strange floating cube that appears to be a doorway to yet another world, but what lies beyond is proving to be a mystery.
But not everyone’s happy with the appointment of Kim to this lofty and important position, with some of the political elite believing it should be them and others simply not trusting the intentions of these aliens, not to mention that one of the alien race has fathered a child with Kim. It’s a stressful time for Kim, but one that she’s willing to endure until attempts are made on her life. Thankfully Marie and Alex (from the Survivors series) are in the crowd and Marie twice foils the assassination attempts, but not before Kim’s daughter is seriously injured. Kim must reassess her position, and that means making the offer of employment to Marie and Alex to assist her in her task, so bringing the two strands of the series comfortably together. But there’s still the question of the cube, its purpose and where it leads, and that quickly presents its own set of problems.
There’s a lot to cover in this book, what with setting up the plot to drive the story forward, refresh the reader with events from the past, and give the meeting of Kim and Marie the time and space it needs to make their bonding meaningful. Consequently it’s a thicker book than previous volumes so plenty to get stuck into (and not enough strange alien life, but that’ll come, I’m sure). The petty manoeuvring of those that feel slighted by Kim’s appointment almost feels overcooked when compared to similar stories of first contact, but having witnessed the recent political shenanigans across the globe and the lengths people in power will go to to protect their own self interests it’s probably a more accurate representation of reality than other tales focusing on a similar event. The effect is to create a palpable sense of frustration and even desperation on Kim’s part as she’s swept along on a journey that she has little control of.
As always exquisitely drawn and presented, this is a very welcome addition to the ongoing story.

I was delighted to discover that Leo has started a new story cycle in Les Mondes d’Aldébaran, the comics series which has been going for two decades. The storyline is that Kim, heroine of the previous series, has returned home to become the key interlocutor between the humans of Aldebaran and the alien Tsalterians (one of whom is father to her child Lynn); and has also become a celebrity, dealing with some very unwelcome attention. The Tsalterians invite her to help them assess a peculiar huge hovering cube, which turns out to be a portal to yet more lushly forested worlds, where both human and inhuman dangers await. (And there’s a bit of freshness to the lush forests, because Leo has handed over the colours to Florence Spitéri rather than do it himself.) Meanwhile Kim has two new allies, an Earth couple who are trapped in perpetual youth. All good stuff and set-up for another few albums.

This is a series I've had my eye on for some time now. Finally got my hands on some and they're volumes 18, 19 and 20. However, it's a complete arc so I thought I'd give it a go.
Kim returns to Aldebaran as quite the celebrity and is soon involved in some politics as well as human-alien talks.
Full of intrigue and humanity being their predictable reprehensible selves, this was an interesting introduction to this imaginative universe. I also didn't feel too left out coming entering these stories at this point.

Le dernier de toute la saga! J'y ai retrouvé le zeste de Aldébaran et Bételgeuse qui avait été perdu dans les Survivants. C'est raffraîchissant de retrouver Kim qui manquait aux albums précédents. J'attends la suite!

Quel plaisir de retrouver Kim et Manon, tous les autres personnages et l'univers d'Aldebaran. J'apprécie que les tomes soient plus longs.
Un premier volume qui pose l'intrigue, voyons voir où cela nous mène.

As a first tome for this new series was quite pleasant to find all the previous characters. Once again Leo touches those aspects that divided and divides humans over our evolution, greed, jealousy and fanaticism of all kinds. As a 1st tome as really good!

I am not so enthousiast by this first episode of the Retour sur Aldébaran,
but i will going to read the second episode already this evening.

Opět o něco epičtější a zajímavější dobrodružství než ta předchozí. Tentokrát to důrazem na spolupráci a na objevování cizího světa leckdy připomínalo klasický Star Trek, a to tím spíš, že je na konci jedno velké odhalení, které každého fanouška tohoto univerza zahřeje u srdce.

If you’ve read previous cycles of the adventures of Kim Keller (and you really need to to appreciate the background to this series) this starts off as a worthy addition to her precious adventures.

Leo's Worlds of Aldebaran is an epic science fiction saga about human colonisation of other planets and first contact scenarios, which appealed to me from the very first cycle,
Aldebaran
, and through its (in the English edition tight) follow up in the second cycle,
Betelgeuse
.
This fifth cycle, Return to Aldebaran, picks up two separate threads: on the one hand, the continuing adventures of Worlds of Aldebaran protagonist, Kim Keller, last seen in the third cycle, Antares , and on the other, the continuing adventures of Marie Servoz and Alex Muniz, the protagonists of the offshoot series Survivors , which obviously served as the over all series fourth cycle.
This is obviously not the best series to start with (I would recommend starting at the very beginning; it is definitely worth it), but this volume – which sees Kim returning to Aldebaran to serve as contact point with the alien Tsalterians and be part of the investigation of a discovered quantum cube, as well as her meeting Marie and Alex (and introducing them into the Mantris group) – has reminded me of how good Leo's science fiction really is. I read the final album of the Survivors series in 2018, and while I have been reading Namibia (the second science fiction series made in collaboration with Rodolphe, and sequel to their Kenya ) in-between, it does not quite compare to Worlds of Aldebaran. There is something about the fictional universe Leo has established here that I find absolutely fascinating and compelling.
I am very much looking forward to see where this fifth cycle will take us. The first album certainly delivers.

Very exciting
I have actually read this a few times & each time is as enjoyable as the last. Several interesting and fun characters come together to make for a captivating read. As with the previous cycles of the "Worlds of Aldebaran," it doesn't take long for the reading experience to become akin to watching a movie.
