This was an incredibly bad book. The plot was very dull and mundane. The title character Maverick was in about four chapters was a completely pointless addition to the story.
I also didn't like how Bethke took to trying to describe the technical activities Derec and Avery were doing. If we are still using a *nix based programming system 1600 years from now, I doubt we'll have very advanced robots.
And lastly, the robots themselves. Why did they all of a sudden start having emotions. "Leaking saddness"... Petty rivalries, jealously and spite. There was no reason for this and it made the robots less than what they are.

Book 5 of Robots and Aliens, book 11 if you count the robot city novels.

Derec, Ariel, Avery and Wolruf are on their way to the planet of the Kin to look for Derec's mother. Dr. Anastasia is already there, looking for her learning robot (a.k.a. Adam/SilverSides) and finds that it is missing. She is disgusted to discover a robot city on the planet and even more disgusted when the robots decide they plan to elevate the Kin to human status and serve them.

Derec's ship has trouble along the way with Aranimus. Derec and Wolfruf escaped from Aranimus in a previous book. Wolruf was already indentured to the alien. When Derec was captured he became a slave. The alien wanted robots. Derec's specialty. He built Mandelbrot, but made sure it knew who was human. Aranimus has been determined to get them back.

This is the same level as the rest of the series. The obligatory exploration of the three laws of robotics. A bit pedantic, explaining exactly what's going on to the younger audience. Enough action and adventure to keep it interesting. I felt a bit cheated that Derec's group didn't catch up with his mom. I mean, that's why they went to the Kin's planet. 3.75 of 5 stars

Not close to Asimov standard. Not interesting narrative. Not enough about alien/robot complications. An indifferent book, only a little bit interesting for someone who wants to complete the six books, hence the second star…

Another excellent epic, this time giving us a glance of Derec's mother and wrapping up with Aranimus.

No way did it actually take me a month and a half to read this slim little book, but I guess it did. I've been SO busy in the last couple months, reading has really taken a back seat. Now, I trim down the number of books I'm reading at the same time in order to finish at least some of them by the end of the year.

Only one more book to go in this fun space opera series. This was a good one!
