The start of a new adventure! A young girl flees for her life-from her parents?! Xena and Gabrielle must determine if the girl is a visionary or a demon. Unfortunately for all concerned, the Oracles of Delphi have already decided!
Erica Schultz is an American comic book writer, letterer, and editor. She is the first woman to write a Spawn comic, and is best known for her writing work at Marvel on titles like Daredevil, X-23, and Hallows' Eve.
This one is split into two stories, one about a seer and one about Xena fest. I like the fact that they both have a moral, and it's not really pushed on you. There were plenty of funny parts as well. The first half is all about embracing who you are, and finding your place in the world. Pretty good action in this one as well. The second one was an homage to geek culture, comic con and cosplay. I pretty much was laughing to myself through that whole one.
The second and final volume of Xena's 2018 series sees Erica Schultz take over writing duties, and that helpfully tones down the dialogue issues I had with the previous volume. Instead it has a different problem, in that it seems like it wants to build to something bigger but then doesn't, so the series kind of ends all up in the air.
There's a hint that Callisto is coming back, but that never gets to come to fruition, and the final two issue arc about a Xena convention (don't ask) fell flat for me as a result. The first three issues about an oracle and an actual oracle were pretty good though.
The art remains very good though, as Vincente Cifuentes draws all five issues here as well.
