I’M LIZETTE CLARY, copywriter by day and Epic Fail Girl by night. I’m an internet meme so notorious that I made a brand out of being human wreckage. Now I’m up for a promotion to New Media Editor at my real job, but there’s a catch: I have to compete with some guy named Jason Moon, a Pulitzer-winning photojournalist taller and more gorgeous than any man I've swiped right on.
Jason says he doesn’t want to the New Media Editor job, but a project that inspires him. And right now, he seems inspired to help me stop being an Epic Fail. We have to work together for six months either way. What’s the harm in becoming Jason Moon’s pet project?
I’M JASON MOON. Yes, that Jason Moon. It’s been years since I felt inspiration. My last muse destroyed my life when she left it, and I’ve been looking for a new model to relight the fire inside me. Instead, I have Lizette Clary, a party girl who comes to work hungover with a poop emoji purse. She's brilliant, but the New Media Editor needs more than brilliance. She needs control.
I'll help her learn to "adult," so to speak. Lizette's eager to improve, and by the time I'm done with her, she'll be a great editor. My plan is perfect except for one thing... I’m starting to feel inspired by a human meme. And it’s not just passion for art.
MY FAIR MILLENNIAL is Pygmalion with Snapchat puppy ears. A hilarious contemporary romance filled with slapstick, sexual tension, and enough 2014 pop culture to leave you swinging from the chandelier. First in a new series by really good-looking and hilarious author Elle Hume.
So, what do you get when one of your favorite kick a** urban fantasy writers decides to jump into a light version of contemporary romance? A fun romp with an edge… but not too much of an edge. Just enough to keep things fun. 😉
Lizette was a mess. I have to admit, it took me a while to really “like” her. Actually, my opinion of her pretty much matched Jason’s. She seemed to not care at all, had no sense of responsibility and cared about no one but herself and even that was debatable at times. Then I got to know her.
To be fair, I had a hard time getting to know Jason too. He seemed self centered, conceited and compared to Lizette, had a strict work ethic that he wouldn’t budge on… then I got to know him. Funny how that works, isn’t it?
Lizette and Jason took their time getting to a point where they could tolerate each other, but they also tried hard to hide their mutual attraction. That avoidance, cat & mouse game was a lot of fun to watch.
My Fair Millennial didn’t exactly end in an HEA and it almost ended in an HFN – more like a mutual agreement? Needless to say, I can’t wait until Elle Hume releases the next installment in her first romantic comedy 😉
I received My Fair Millennial in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I received this book in exchange of a honest review. I've never really been a fan of the romantic comedy type book and I was a little reluctant, but once I got into it, I really enjoyed it. This is the first book in a new series by author Elle Hume. The book was well written and story pulled me in. In the beginning of the book I found Lizette to be so annoying and Jason to be a bit dry and boring. I thought what would a guy like Jason are in Lizette, but the more I read the more I found myself actually liking her and rooting for her. A lot of the banter between Jason and Lizette kept me smiling. I could imagine this book being adapted for television and becoming a six series. I would recommend this to anyone who likes this genre and even to some of us that typically don't.
I received a free copy of this in exchange of a review. This was a quick humorous read, while I had a hard time with the female MC she ended up growing on me in the end. It'll be interesting to watch Moon and LC's relationship develop in future books.
Ummmmm... NOPE. Makeover books tend to make me anxious, despite how well intentioned they might be, because the basic premise of “you need to change in order to be worthy” - regardless of the type of worthiness under discussion - is gross. This, alas, is no exception to that rule.
Our “hero” spends the entire book underestimating, shaming, ridiculing, believing the worst rumours about, and just generally being a total sanctimonious jerk to the heroine. The big reveal? She’s not a train wreck! Gosh! And when he shows up at her doorstep in some ill conceived romantic gesture to admit his desire for her, he not only manages to flub that but to add some shame sprinkles to his judgemental cake. It’s gross.
He has the gall to lecture her about how he didn’t consent to being her dominant WHILE DOMINATING HER (and declaring a public relationship without checking in with her first, yet somehow he’s got the moral high ground for consent???). When she has to swoop in and save his ass (on more than one occasion mind) so she finally realises that, while she changed and grew to please him, he didn’t do any of the fucking work necessary to understand her talents - she sort of shrugs and gets gleeful about that lil quirk of his.
He never thanks her and tho he does at one point apologise it’s not the stuff dreams are made of. He says he “owe[s her] an apology. Again.” And that’s it. He doesn’t APOLOGISE, he simply acknowledges that he knows he should. #IsTHISRomance?
ALL. THE. NOPE.
Also - random side note - why tf is this set in 2014???
Lizette Clary is the epitome of the saying hot mess express. She didn’t get her name as Epic Fail Girl just because, no she earned it, but when you go viral you embrace it, even if it is embarrassing, you take that as your brand and use it to your advantage! Of course there are always more layers to a person than meets the eye and Lizette Clary is so much more than just Epic Fail Girl, even if she doesn’t show it.
Jason Moon is a well educated, proper gentleman. When him and Lizette first meet there is a difficulty truly understanding one another considering she is a millennial who is used to instant gratification whereas Jason is more old school and realized that art and things worth having are worth waiting for. When they are told they will be working together they do their best to try to embrace it. They learn quite a bit about themselves while getting to know each other and I loved every bit of it. The fact that Jason has a moment where he says “It never failed to amaze me how it sounded like we were speaking the same language, yet we didn’t use any of the same vocabulary.”
Elle did a great job showing the rift between generations and how different and diverse millennials are and how they are so much smarter than they get credit for, even when the older generations have no understanding of what millennials are talking about. I loved the way Elle showed all the differences between the older generations and millennials, but also showed that if you just spend a little bit of time and put in a little effort you can learn to understand and accept others.
I felt like there were so many great messages wrapped up in these pages, and I enjoyed the romance too. It was sweet and innocent, yet it wasn’t really innocent at all. It was all that I wanted, I’m ready for the second book. I’m ready for all my questions that I still have to be answered. This book doesn’t have a “cliffhanger” but it does leave you questioning what will happen next and it definitely leaves you wanting more.
It was also very satisfying how enhanced the dialogue in this book is, I was thankful for the challenge. I have read over 100 books a year for as long as I can remember and this book actually surprised me with how many words I had to look up. I loved it! I felt like I needed to find Lizette’s word of the day app ;)!
Well done Elle I know this was a step out of your comfort zone so to speak but it was a successful and well worth the hassle step! Thank you for your words and your creativity!
I can’t wait to read more of Jason and Lizette and see what is to come with the professionalism, and the partnership, and possibly fingers crossed, the romance too!
I...almost don't know where to start with this review. Lizette is a MESS. But she owns that mess. It doesn't make her mess less messy, but she's turned her bad fortune into a brand and she's not going to let anyone get her down.
At least that's what she tells herself. Really, she's internalizing a lot of stuff and doing her best to keep her embarrassing moments from crushing her soul AND SHE DOESN'T SEE IT AT ALL.
But Jason does. Well, initially he sees exactly what Lizette wants him to see. He sees her as flighty and shallow and living for the moment. But then he sees glimpses of the other Lizette. The one who developed a well thought out social media plan and who hides her vulnerability behind sass and sarcasm and oversharing.
And he KNOWS he can help her shine if she'll just let him.
No lie, I REALLY liked the Lizette/Jason dynamic. She's a slightly batty oversharer. He's a good guy determined to do the right thing. He's not happy with the power dynamics he sees in the photography/modeling business and he does what he can to mitigate it. She's just like "LOL. It cool." Which, naturally, he's not down for.
I just LIKED them. When he starts to see her. When she realizes she gets off on his bossiness. When she goes into a self-destructive spiral because she's not good at dealing. Like I said, she's a mess, but she's Jason Moon's mess and I like that.
(As a totally random aside, I saw a stage play of My Fair Lady starring Richard Chamberlain as Professor Henry Higgins in my teens. I have NEVER heard an entire theater of middle aged women sigh as deeply and heartfeltedly as when he walked on stage the first time. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS BOOK EXCEPT FOR THE MY FAIR LADY THING, BUT I STILL LAUGH OVER THAT THEATER-WIDE SIGH. STILL. YEARS LATER. LOLOLOL!)
OK, I went into this book completely blind. I know the author’s other work and love that, so I figured I’d give this a go. At first glance, this description looks like something I would not enjoy – a millennial girl who has to work with some uptight guy? Wow, was I wrong!
At first glance, Lizette is everything that will annoy you. It looks like she’s a party girl that magically gets through life on her social media skills and fashion sense. If you look deeper, though, there is some true genius to this girl. Jason Moon, a famous photojournalist who has been tasked with being Lizette’s partner in the company’s new endeavor, has the same knee jerk reaction I did to Lizette. She really grows on you, though, and Jason is no exception to her magic. These two were great fun to watch bounce around each other, each trying to stay to their “brand.”
Aside from all the craziness, Lizette was a true force to be reckoned with. She definitely became a bit of an inspiration for not caring what people think and just being who you are. Does she have tough moments? Is she heavily reliant on attention? Sure, but there is a deeper layer to her that is tough as steel. I absolutely cannot wait to see where this series takes me if this is only the beginning!
I freaking loved this book. Hilarious social commentary at its best, plus a really heartfelt story of growth with a feeling of walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. Lizette Clary is such an unapologetic mess - and I love when an author isn’t afraid to go there. By rights, she should be unlikable, but because she’s so honest with her dirty laundry, I found her oddly endearing. She’s an all-encompassing millennial - from her constant need to stay relevant across all social media platforms, to her cosmetic enhancements. Enter Jason Moon, the complete opposite of Lizette - older, wiser... maybe a little judgmental. But Jason seems to be the only one to truly see beneath Lizette’s carefree exterior - he sees the vulnerability and the loneliness. And while he sets out to teach her valuable work place lessons, she inadvertently schools him on a few things too. These two together are fun, oftentimes explosive, and the chemistry is undeniable. The only thing that makes waiting for the next book bearable is knowing that we’ve only just scratched the surface of their story - and what a story so far!
This is outside my preferred genre, and I honestly didn't think I'd make it past page 50. I was not all that impressed with how the story began, but I trudged thru & found that this was a cute story. Jason & lizette come from 2 different worlds. He's kind of a stick in the mid for the first few chapters & has no "knowledge" of social media. Lynette is "Epic Fail Girl" with a big social media presence & following. They are paired together to design the new format for the magazine they work for. She turns his world upside down & you can't help but laugh at some of her antics. This book ends on a semi-cliffhanger as they are getting on a plane. I rated this down because of my first impression. This is my first book by this author so I can't compare it to anything else by her, but all in all it's a cute story. I might even decide re-read the next installment of this couple.
What a great book! I get so tired and bored of romance novels because they just seem all the same to me, but not this one! Yes! It was so refreshing. The plot itself is nothing super original, but the characters really made it unique and enjoyable. I loved that the two main carachters were written with unique voices. Too many times I've read books where chapters from female and male perspective sounded the same. Two verrry different people should not have identical patterns of thinking, right? I also loved that the comedy element was very much there, but the romance was also amazing. The two did not hinder each other, and overall i feel that the book was very well balanced. I enjoyed revelation of the nature of theit relationship towards the end, as I am also into that and it added nice spiciness to the romance. This book is a new favourite of mine! Way to go, miss Hume ;)
When I started this book I hated the female lead, and I seriously thought of quitting, but I persevered, and it got a little better. It could be that I am just too old to appreciate a woman who is making spare cash by monetizing a site with pictures of her boobs and other more intimate areas, doesn't know the difference between punctuality and punctuation, and spends most of her time getting drunk and having casual sex. The relationship between her and her older mentor is probably the best part of the book as he attempts to make her more businesslike, and she to loosen him up, but even that has some disturbing overtones as their relationship is characterized by her as domination, and he seems to go along with that idea. 2.5 stars
I found this book annoying and crass. It's a mixture of a tame fifty shades, My Fair Lady, and the sitcom Selfie. I fall in love with the lead male character Jason Moon, but the lead female character Lizzette is so unlikable and annoying that I don't even care what happens to her. This author does a very poor job at even describing the characters. I found myself surprised more than once when a character later is totally different in looks than what I only could assume they was supposed to look like. That being said, it did drag me in to read the second book and but the third. I'm invested in this stupid story now and want to know if Jason gets his girl. I am dragging my feet in the third book as there is only so much I can take.
I got this e-book for free as an ARC review. Having read the authors other work under a different name, I had high expectations. It isn’t as dark nor fantastical as her other work. But I wasn’t disappointed. The characters are well rounded and interesting. The relationship between Lizette and JMoon is fun and takes an unexpected turn. Lizette is incredibly irritating at first but slowly grew on me. She really is a messed up 20something! Jason appears to have it all together but we’ll see... I’m looking forward to seeing where the next two books take these two. There’s drug use, references to sex and BDSM.
This does take a chapter or 2 to get into but then it is full of laughter, cringe worthy moments and the hope that both Elsie and Jason can not only get along but see whats happening between them. Elsie is a hot mess and swings between seeming ditzy to super smart which shows you know there is more to her that what we first think. Jason appears to have peaked in his career and now has not only lost his direction with that but also his life in general. There is loads ad loads of laughs to be had along with a cringe worthy time or two while we get to see these two get to know each other and see what mayhem they... I mean Elsie can get up to while trying to work together.
I love this authors writting under her other pen name so I thought i would give this one a try. Wasn't sure if I was going to get into it as at the beginning I didn't understand half of what Lizette was saying (similar to the way Jason felt) - which I'm sure was Elles intent! but as the characters and situations built, I got totally sucked in and realise she is not just the annoying brat who is fixated on social media that you first Think. Superbly written and like most addictions the more you read the more you want!!! Can't wait for book 2. Highly recommended!!
If you are looking for a lovely funny romance book then you will love this book. Very different from this authors other books but could see very similar writing style but thrown into the real world. Lizzette is a walking disaster when she is made to work with Jason, Jason makes her his project to improve her, they have many ups and downs along the way. Really looking forward to the next book in the series.
This is such a great storyline- those of us who are of ‘a certain age’ will remember My Fair Lady, and this story seems to be a modern retelling of this fairytale- having said that - this book is AWESOME ! I love Lizette, and there are such nuances to her character- it is wonderful. This book had me enthralled, I couldn’t put it down, and cannot recommend it highly enough. I can’t wait to read the next book in the story
As a millennial, I was interested in this romantic comedy read from the perspective of someone that wasn't way younger or older than me. Unfortunately, the character was completely unrelatable to me. The character is somehow good at her job but is completely selfish and obtuse to others' needs until it comes to the romantic interest. Book is an easy read, it's pretty engaging, but not my cup of tea.
Ok admittedly I wasn't thrilled with the main character Lizette at the beginning. She represents all of those pieces about millennials that drive me crazy (I say as being one) and yet she drew me in. She had a lot of room to grow and when she is matched up with an older and much more serious partner at work they bring out the best in each other. They help each other grow and get some work in line. I am interested in seeing where their relationship goes and how as they explore it.
I only got twenty pages into this book and had to quit. The main character is a shallow girl riding on the game of nudity and body functions. Not interesting.
