I've read the all of these books all the way back to Ember War (I read 4 years ago) and just completed Terra Nova #4. I like the overall story and the multiple settings created. The universe is interesting and the villains are good at being villains.
What I don't really care for is the never ending over-reaction by K. Carson about everything. She'd actually be the last person I'd send out on Alien meeting quests, she acts more like a private then a CWO. Half the stuff she does is annoying and the other half is over-the-top super hero like. And her dialogue just rings corny and fake to me. I like West better. Moreover, a lot of the dialogue in general with all of the humans is just corny.
Hands down the best character added was MAC/CID. I wish he'd be in all 4 Terra Nova books. He was cool and fun to follow. I would've loved to follow him thru the story-line and not Carson and her constant child-like temper tantrums.
Overall, all of these books felt like they were written for a younger teen crowd. Don't expect much of in-depth character development or maturer themes.
Should I have read this book? Almost certainly not; I didn't like the previous books in the series and had planned not to read this one. But I had already bought this and [sunk cost fallacy].
I did like this a bit better than the previous books; I suspect part of this was understanding what I was getting into before starting.
It has the endemic plausibility problems of the premise, but since I knew that, it's on me this time. That said, many of the reactions of people here seem hyperbolic and counter to their own interests. Some of those reactions are explained (PTSD is a serious mental illness), but others seem to be purely for plot convenience.
Structurally, the book follows four different groups with almost no interaction. The regular switching of viewpoints, with no specific information that would indicate how their timelines interact, makes for a reading experience more broken up than it needs to be.
The blackmailed former colony leader is still acting zealously in the interests of the big bads. A small group of Pathfinders plus the Hardy Boys is up against the power of yet another entire planet. There is a comic relief droid with two brains (that argue, as one should expect). And there is the colony, where the viewpoint characters are trying to convince the governing council that defending itself might be a good idea. None of these groups rings quite true. In many ways, the plot here feels like the kind of sketched in plot in a CRPG. Unfortunately, since the reader doesn't have any control over the plot, the flaws are more noticeable.
The action scenes are written quite well, but ultimately, they cannot carry the book by themselves. Not recommended.
Multiple planets, multiple alien races, multiple enemies all singularly involved in keeping the status quo. With themselves on top of the trash pile. One race trying to keep the dark away but can’t even stop the dark in their own hearts.. so how do we all agree on one thing, even if it is a truth.. pretty complicated writing wrapped up in a little book.. little hints of every sci-fi tv show I know.. awesome work .. can’t wait for the next book......”By your command”
Meh. Cliche and kinda stupid. The villains are shallow and have no depth. They're evil, but don't look to deep, because we don't really know why. The Xaros were evil, and shallow, but they had some mystery until the reveal of the Masters, and even then were shallow, but had a simple and understandable motive that made them make sense. The Triumvirate don't make any sense as to why they are at all successful, or why they want to conquer the galaxy, they're just boring bad guys. The good guys are no better. Waste of my time. Glad I'm done with this series.
This is a continuation of the storyline from the previous book in the series. It furthers the story and leaves a big opening for the next book. This book really does not stand on its own. I think the entire series should be published in a single volume, but that is just me.
I was thinking of stopping here, but I will probably continue to the next book in the series... "Hale's War".
The third book of this series has started to race to the end. The Triumvirate have not had everything there own way, the natives are fighting back and the Core also has a player in play. But can Carson get help to Terra Nova in time for the final battle. Looking forward to the last book of this series, and more from these two authors.
Really enjoyed reading this book. I found it has the usual problem of all the books in this series, not enough pages. I wanted more story when the pages ran out. I am so looking forward to the next book.
A very entertaining and enjoyable book. I can't wait for the next book. I have read all the books in the saga and each is as great as the next. I look forward to the next book
A solidly written storyline, with several engaging characters. The plot is exciting and keeps you guessing the whole time. Definitely recommend reading.
Once again it's an action sci-fi that focuses on the action. But the action in this one did need reach par with the 2 previous books in the series. The lore and story is interesting enough that I'm going to finish the series. But I'm not as excited for the 4th and final book as I should be.
I wasn’t quite as interested in this book as it was kind of build up and galaxy creation but it was still interesting. I can feel hales frustration with people not working together to fight their enemies. People really are stupid.
A confusing start as you try to recall the end of the last book and all the different factions but then gels into a good continuation to a ending that.......... Read the book ☺
Two starts because its not a complete, its the first half, ending abruptly. Books 3 and 4 should really be one book. Now books 3 and 4 together is 4 stars for those in to military Sci-Fi
