Ugh, so disappointed lately with second books in series. I don't know what it is.. or what I'm drinking.. but ugh!

Lost in Shadow was a book that I was definitely super excited to dive into. I have been waiting for it to come out... but then, ugh - nope. It felt like nothing was really happening in this one. It was boring.. and so so SO boring. I wanted to like it but nothing was helping.

Besides feeling like nothing really happened, well - obviously things did but everything seemed off. Whether it was the action, drama, or romance - everything. was. off. You name something that happened.. and it just felt weird or rushed. It's hard to explain I guess.

Other than all of that, I just didn't like it which sucks because I was so pumped to dive into this one. I loved the first book.. and now I'm just disappointed in myself and everything else.

Ari is lost in the shadow realm and must find her way back to reality. Once she does that, she learns that a bunch of supernaturals in the community have gone missing or are murdered with the Shadow Pack symbol left on the body and Tori is among the missing.

I like parts of this book. I'm certainly not complaining that Ari finally accepts relationships with all these men of hers and has lost some of her fear of commitment. However, I feel like we were barely introduced to the mystery of the missing supernaturals and the book ended right when we got our first big clue. It was a bit of a letdown, thus the average rating. I'm not so upset that I don't plan on continuing - because I will - I just would have liked a few more parts of the puzzle before my cliffhanger.

fUCK mE.

Lost in Shadow picks up right after the end of book 1. Ari is trapped in the Shadow Realm after sacrificing herself to save Garret. Ari meets a mysterious guy who seems to want to help. She temporarily trusts him and is able to make her way back to the world of the living. But things are not looking good in the shifter community. Supernaturals are being taken left and right, and shifters are appearing tortured and murdered. The police force, ASP, refuses to listen to these claims or do anything about them. It's now up to Ari and her pack to get down to the bottom of it.

I absolutely loved this installment, even more than the first one. Hunted by Shadows gives us a taste of Ari's possible relationships with the guys, but in this book we actually get to see some of the changes to the guys as well as how their complicated love life might work out. Ari also finds out she has another mate, because already having one True Mate and three other mates wasn't enough for her.

Ari was extra ferocious in this book. While she's always been intense and dominant, she's downright dedicated. She is determined to take down the Shadow pack, and learn how to control her Shadow powers. The mystery of her gifts is explained a bit more and we get to learn more about Shadowborn in general.

I really loved seeing Ari stepping up into a leadership role and I can't wait to see what will happen. The ending was fucking evil and I AM DEAD. I told my friend I wasn't reading book 3 since it's not out as an audiobook, but wow that's going to be a lie.

This was an incredible continuation to the Shadowborn trilogy! After making the decision to use her shadow ability and save her men, Ari is trapped in the Shadow Realm. Her men need her, there are attacks on shifters, and the magical community as a whole is crumbling. Can she find her way back in time and help save everyone?
I liked getting to learn about the Shadow Realm and it’s inhabitants. It was unique and intriguing with vivid descriptions. I felt like a lot of the characters and relationships grew throughout this book and there was plenty of steam. Ari learns that she can’t just bolt from her emotions and past, she has to confront them, deal with them, and let others help her along the way. I enjoyed learning about the other packs, Garrett’s family, and other magical beings in this world along with their histories. I especially thought that Pack Unite was cool- a fox alpha with otter and badger shifters. I love how different these shifters are and that they’ve banded together. The ending broke my heart, but I need to see if Ari can pick herself back up after it and how her story ends.

Needs editing

The story continues to be interesting, but really needs continuity and story editing. For example, right at the beginning of the book Ari is telling us Tori is the only person she ever cared about until she met the guys, um how about Garret who you've known almost as long as you've know Tori and are in love with? O'Kane also switches back and forth between Ari just having feelings for a bunch of the guys and being mates to all of the guys. And if you are going to have someone trapped in another realm, their body waiting away so that they are so frail they get winded walking up stairs you can't also have them slamming people against walls, going on pack runs, and running laps around the compound and training, this two things don't add up. There is also a weird tone to things with Ari sometimes coming across as a 70 year old. Who invites someone in for coffee and puts the kettle on in 2019 at the end of a date?!?!? There are also elements that are repeated.over and over again to the point where the reader is like, ok, I get it, but then other elements are completely skipped over. Don't just say Ari and guy x (name not given to avoid spoiler) say and had coffee, talking, and soon everyone was up, give the reader that conversation and that bonding, they need to gall in love with that guy too. So yes, more better editing would really improve this. If you are a beta reader please be brutally honest with the author and tell them what you think so that the author can consider changes, and authors, please seek beta readers who are brutally honest and detail oriented. Even if they have a critique for literally every paragraph it doesn't mean you don't have a great story nor does it mean you have to adopt every one of their critiques, but there have been so many books that people are rating 5 stars and they just aren't. They are good ideas and they could be five stars but they need a little more attention. This needs a little more attention. Hopefully book 3 will get that attention.

Just a little bit of info, if you read my first review here it'll give you some context on my feelings on Reverse Harem as a genre in general—from the perspective of a polyamorous person—and a bit about werewolves in books too. But the TLDR; version is that I'm not a fan of neither. So the fact that I liked this book well enough is a testament all on it's own.

This is the kind of series i start listening to when I'm trying to fall asleep, and they vary in quality between horrid, mediocre, and liked it well enough. Somewhere between mediocre and liking it is really what you are aiming for if you want to be able to enter The Land of Nod.
This series was better than expected, but nothing great. However if you're a Reverse Harem fan I think this book might be a good bet.

A bit about the plot and characters
The plot itself is nothing super special about this. We start with the cliffhanger from the end of book one, and we are left with a cliffhanger by the time this book is finished as well. What you need to know about it is pretty much explained in the book blurb. Ari is trapped in the Shadow realm and her body is in the real world, the men she has started to care for going frantic with worry. Strange things are happening in the supernatural world, kidnappings and murders and there is a conspiracy as to who might be behind it. It's the kind of storyline you've seen one variation of or another—with varying degrees of success—if you've read some Urban Fantasy or Paranormal Romance before. It's done proficiently enough in this case. Ari herself is also very much a stock urban fantasy heroine, and again she is neither very poorly or very badly written, she is perfectly adequate.
Most of the boys are pretty factory standard as well.
-Killian: the Brooding and domineering alpha with a tragic past.
-Garreth: the loyal and loving best friend.
-Eric: The sexy mysterious one with hidden darkness
-Alex: The responsible beta torn between what he wants and his responsibilities
Seb is the interesting one because he is the "submissive" but he is not shy at all. He is the flirty and fun guy, who is also kinda kinky. (His powers seem to be growing for some reason though, so we'll see what happens with that. apparently they couldn't leave him underpowered which sucks)
All in all despite the characters being pretty bog standard I like them well enough, even Killian—the alpha douche werewolf type I usually hate—at least attempts to reign in his behaviour. Which makes him "not awful" if not exactly likable. Ari is constantly calling him on it and telling him not to act like a domineering alpha baby.
We get some more carnal action in this book, so instead of plot interlude with flirting we get something with a bit more spice

-some plot
-sex
-more plot
-sex
-plot
-threesome sex!

Which, is nice enough. the scenes are moderately sexy.

Final Thoughts
Despite this book bucking some of the tropes of RH and werewolf elitist caste system bullshit.
It still plays into a lot of them. Pointing it out is all well and good, but they still put up with it.
Ari is about to have sex with Seb, and he says they can't have sex before she's had sex with the more dominant alphas. She says that's bullshit, but Alex just confirms that no she can't, that would change the dynamic. But she CAN have a threesome with one of the dominants AND Seb. (cause apparently that's fine cause she'd be fucking the other guy, and Seb would just happen to be there)
Fuck that shit, Ari should say no. She decides what she does and she refuses to let any such toxic dominant posturing decide what she should do with HER body.
She should tell the guys they better put up with it, and that "having her first" is not a damned competition.

I've said it before and I'll say it again!
These are my thoughts on werewolves! FIGHT ME!
Werewolves are just fairy facists change my mind

Another example is a later incidence, where they are about to go to an important meeting, and she mentions that she hates how Seb has to go last as though he is less valued. But they all still put up with it. Pointing it out is well and good, but it's not the same as changing it. I am hoping that maybe in the last book they do something about that.
One thing I appreciated was that there was a mating bond with two characters but not ALL. Bucking the trend that magical mojo is the only deciding factor in who you love. Magical bonds take away agency.
HOWEVER, in one of the instances the dude would literally die if she didn't let him be close to her. and would never be at full strength again if she didn't accept it. With the other dude he would go mad if she died while the bond had still not been made permanent. And if it HAD been, the death of one would lead to the death of the other.
That shit ain't romantic, it's just stupid, and kinda toxic to be honest. Because of those elements minifesting in this book I unfortunately can't round the rating up to a 3. But it is still decent for a RH book.

Target Numb 4

That ending was definitely NOT one I saw coming. This book starts off, right where book 1 ended. Ari is lost to herself in the Shadow realm. She focuses on getting back to her family. When she comes back into the real world, the guys at least, have tried to get closer to her knowing that the end is never known.
Ari is then still faced with challenges she doesnt know she can make it out of. Her old pack, The Shadow pack is still after her and other shifters and beings are winding up tortured and dead. She's determined to stop it all.
She finally admits to herself that she does indeed care for all of her guys. The steam does increase, but the "fire" is more YA. Doctor Eric does come into this book as one of her "mates". And although there was a very brief moment of MM with Alex and Seb, it's still not clear if they are actually into each other also. I’m hoping for more character development between them all. It seems pretty scarce.

The end of this book got interesting fast involving a meeting with all shifter types, some Vampires, Incubus and some Fae. ASP shows up, to work against them and start taking prisoners and lives. When something bad happens, Ari loses her control and ends what she can. She ends up back in the shadow realm with more questions than before.

*Overall 3/5
*Heat? 3/5 The steam factor definitely increased, but it feels more YA
*MFMMMM Romance
*First person POV, mainly Ari. Some clips of Eric in the beginning
*HEA? No, cliffhanger

I liked the book, but didn't exactly love it simply because of Ari's narrow mindedness and kinda bitchy attitude, especially towards Eric.
My heart goes out for that poor guy, him being so understanding, sacrificing and nice. I want to smack, slap , kick Ari in first book and in second book when she goes about ranting about him feeding off on pain when it's not his fault that he is a Pain Incubus.
Ugh poor guy had to go through all sorts of heartache and pain before Ari pulled her cowardly head out from her selfish ass.

The only reason why this didn't get a 1 star with a strong but awful bitchy fmc is because I loved all the MCs especially Eric.
Brutal cliffy but thanks to that and Arianna's men I will be reading the next book.

SOOOOOOO, it’s been a while fam.

I’ve been so busy *crying*
No time to read *mentally ill*
No time to review books *deceased*

But I finally finished this book!

It was boring AF.

I had a süper hard time trying to focus on this book.

We have the typical:
Bonds are RAPIDLY formed.
Action scenes are hella rushed.
Progression is awkwardly coming along.

I just wasn’t feeling it.

Bringing Eric in
This was awkward and rushed. Read above.
She’s mad, she’s suddenly developing feelings, she’s still weird about it? There’s really no development here. It’s not explained well.

I’m not saying introduce alllll of the men at once.
I’m just asking that if you’re gonna make a dude part of the harem later in the book, make it more real.

The epilogue
Was that it???
Why was the last of it an epilogue?
Is it over?
I AM SO CONFUSED.
(I also skimmed the last three chapters)
But if that was supposed to be a cliffhanger ending onto book two that’ll go into book 3 but it says “The End” and then mention an excerpt of Tori meeting Ari??

Was anyone else perplexed??

Maybe just me.

Ugh this was such a boring review.
Sorry friends, more to come!
I’m here all night!
Tip your waiters.

This book couldn't be more aptly named. The story revolves around the concept of being "lost in shadow", be it technically or thematically. It continues to where Ari found herself trapped in the Shadow realm after over using her powers to kill the Alpha of Shadow pack, her father. Through reasons she couldn't explain, she was able to come back to human realm for short period of time but still casted in shadow form. She started to lose her memories the longer she stays in Shadow land. Fortunately, she found a way to come back to her men when a mysterious stranger bathed in light rescues her from an attack and taught her the way to master the shadows.

This book is a great follow up to the next installment. While reading, I have this distinct feeling of build up to that inevitable moment: a supernatural war. This is what I felt and I could be wrong though. We will see then.

The story tackles mostly how Ari recovers from her injury of the attack and her time in Shadow realm. It shows Ari forming and strengthening her relationship with her men, while investigating the alarming number of supernatural disappearances. We were also introduced to new, interesting side characters that may or may not play a major role in the outcome of this series. And oh, let's not talk about that little (?) bomb that involves a certain guy.

I've enjoyed reading this and with the way it ends (my poor Ari), let's just say that I can't wait to read book 3!

Deep breath in, deep breath out! Repeat 5 times.... ok, I think I’m ready. Book 2 follows the same level of intensity as book 1. I felt as though it started a little slow but once everyone is back together it is full on. This will leave you screaming at your kindle and have your emotions all over the place. There is a lot of heat in this one to get the pulse racing and the relationships moving in the right direction. Love what’s happened with Eric and the introduction of Garrett’s family. But Erin, why????? The ending is just ... I can’t even process right now. Book 2 steps the story up a level and will not disappoint. Love your work Erin.

Lost In Shadow by Erin O’Kane is the second book in Shadowborn Series, and I was again captivated by the incredible story.

With Ari trapped in the Shadow Realm and the darkness trying to draw her in, it’s up to her men to watch over her until she can return. But the fates have only just begun playing with her life. With more bonds forming between Ari and her men, and supernaturals disappearing at every turn I was hooked on how this would play out.

The emotions and storyline are well written throughout the entire story, and the ending will leave you wanting to start to final book immediately.

Good follow up to book 1 although the time she spent I. The shadow realm was a little tedious. Lots of relationship building and surprises, not just with her guys. Ari starts to grow and learn to share her thoughts and fears instead of bolting at any emotion, which was welcome. Definitely a whirlwind with loss and love and trying to bring the shifter community together to go against a common foe. Cliffhanger, but not quite as bad as book 1

DNF @ 76%

I really tried, I don't like not finishing books, but this one was a real struggle to get through. I liked the first book in the series, so I was happy to give this one a go.

The book started out slow with Ari being in the Shadow dimension, but I had hoped it wouldn't stay that way for the rest of the book. Thankfully about 18% into the book Ari is able to come back and I thought the story would finally start progressing.

I don't know what happened but it almost felt like it was a different person writing this book. I found the story didn't really flow and it felt like we were getting bullet points instead

The meal was delicious and the company was great. They are full on, but I haven't laughed that much in years. The twins are hilarious and seem to make it their life mission to cause chaos. Molly is lovely and keeps trying to find out more about me, but I manage to get away with saying as little as possible without seeming rude. Garett has been throwing me heated looks over the table all evening and it's been boiling my blood. We are just finishing our coffee when Garett squeezes my hand under the table.

Also, I felt our heroine lost her identity and became this weak insecure person who focused in the most banal things.

This is the second time in a week that I’ve worn a dress, I hope this isn't becoming a habit. I play with the skirt feeling uncomfortable, but what else was I going to wear to meet his family.

Bassically it felt like the writing style only kept getting worse as the book went and the storyline along with it.

OMG, I thought that Book 1 was awesome, this one blew me away. This story is amazing and once again, I could not put it down. From the moment that I picked it up, I was hooked. It moves along at a great pace, which makes it a nice easy read, as you are not losing interest due to the speed that it moves along. The characters are great and no matter what you want to see them overcome everything in their way and be happy. The story will grab you and not let you go until you finish the very last page and then you are needing more. This is a must read, no doubt about it.

Very good follow up to Hunted By Shadows. Anais Inara Chase is one of my favorite narrators and I appreciate that the audiobooks of this title and the series starter were both available digitally through my local library. The writing style and story line are quite good for an independent author. I liked the books enough that I purchased them in audiobook and ebook form.

📓 still some undeveloped relationships. Alex’s relationships is mostly just sex. Eric was just introduced to the group (chapter 7) saying that Ari is his True Mate. Still feels a lot less developed.

📓 sudden reveal that Tori and Garett’s brothers: Max, Jack and Ben are Fated Mates. Felt rushed

📓 some dialogue felt stiff and unnatural. Especially when revealing Ari’s insecurities.

📓 didn’t know how to feel about the author writing in that if Ari doesn’t accept the Fated bond with Eric, he will eventually die but not if they are physically close.

Read other books from this author in the future: yes

After Ari at the end of book 1 the wolf pack and Garrett by using her shadow powers and killing her father. Now she awakes in a shadow world. But her body exists in the normal world. Ari tries to come back and with the help of another Shadow Born she succeeds.
They now try to investigate the disappearance of Shifters who are tortured and appear dead, only with a hint to Aris old pack. They investigate because the police of the Supernaturals only tries to make clues disappear and not to clear up the deeds.
As more and more Supernaturals disappear, all groups are invited to a neutral location to discuss everything Ari and her friends have found out. Here the Supernatural police invades and shoots harmless participants of the meeting.

The book ends sadly on a cliffhanger. I thought the book was okay, but I didn't figure out why the Shadowborn are so important and why Supernaturals are being kidnapped now. Let's see if it's already developed further in volume three.

Deutsche Rezension:

Amazing follow-up to Book 1 in Erin O'Kane's Shadowborn series! I will admit this one took me a little bit to get sucked into, but that was because of the story and what was going on. It was tough while Ari was in the Shadow Realm because she was disconnected from her guys and Tori and I kept wanting to read quickly because I need things to right themselves haha, but it wasn't long before they did. Once she got back home, I couldn't put this book down!! I love every second of it, including that ridiculous cliffhanger haha.

I really loved the walls coming down within Ari, allowing the guys to be there for her and her accepting her feelings for them. I NEED A GARETT IN MY LIFE! Ughhh so adorable and yummy. I am intrigued with what is going on with Seb and want to learn more about Alex and Kill. And I am so excited about the 5th one, I think I am the most excited for them to get together. I love how this book wasn't overtly about their relationships, it was driven by the storyline. I really liked getting to learn more about the other packs and supernatural creatures.

Holy moly that ending. I cant believe this is how it ends for one of our favorite characters. It just can't be. Especially with the Mating Bond reveal (which they totally need their own spinoff!). Ok don't want to give anything away or ramble on. You will not be disappointed in this book. I cant wait to see what Erin has planned next. I need to know more about Ari's powers, Em, and so much more ❤️❤️❤️

Lost to the shadow realm as it claims her soul is she.

Her body slowly fading, whilst her soul fights to live to see another true day.

Devestated and broken are they at the loss of her.

They watch, they wait, they hope and research.

Will she ever come back to them..?

Oh, what an utterly spellbinding and extremely addictive second book in this series!

This is a direct continuation of "Hunted by Shadows". You do need to read these in sequence order to understand, and follow the story.

Her untrained and uncontrollable abilities landed her in the shadow realm as my mind was screaming not to take her away!!

I wanted more of the unorthodox and complex reletionships. The bonds growing between them all are both captivating and fascinating at the same time.

Ari is truly coming into herself with both her heart and her mind as she starts to accept both her wolf and her shadows.

Her walls are slowly crumbling under the love and attention of her admirers. It's beautiful to watch.

The guys are all so different but they all want and need her affection. She calms their storms, and stokes their fires.

The sexual tension is off the charts and oh my I freaking loved it!

Erin has continued the story beautifully, and to summarise, You NEED this series if you are a true paranormal reverse harem fan!

Oh wow, what a story. I loved every moment of it, although it tore the heart out of my chest, so consider yourselves warned. It continues where the previous book left off and it finishes on a equally heavy cliffhanger as the previous one.
Ari is facing so many new challenges, but at lest her commitment issues are subsiding and are replaced by incredible sexual tension that are a source of all kinds of funny situations this time. As the group delves deeper into the events that occurred and are still occurring, their revelations are as surprising as they are shocking at times.
Ari's determination is inspiring, as is her love, loyalty, and need to help everyone around her. Then all the love and support she receives from her closest friends and partners, as well as the pack is not very surprising at all.
The plot is nerve wrecking, and the author did an amazing job, as previously, on further character development and the expansion of the world, and history of the packs. I loved this story, regardless of the brutal heartbreak, but I'll forgive the author as soon as I get my hands on the next book.
This is a sequel to Hunted by Shadows (Shadowborn Series Book One), and it only makes sense if read after.

Lost in Shadow literally felt lost with how the story moves downhill with every chapter seemingly moving farther away from what a second book should have.

After the first scene that starts off in the shadow world, I thought we were finally going to get more content geared towards the shadowborn powers but even in the minuscule scenes practicing those powers, it stays very surface level and the rest of the time, it's kinda brushed over despite it's importance towards the plot. The first book may have been predictable but there were enough engaging scenes to have a nice flowing story but Lost in Shadows was complete lacklustre. There wasn't enough detailed effort to lead towards the end fight for the cliffhanger.

Ari as a FMC pushed way into the insecure stereotypes of the genre. Alex still doesn't have anything to feel weighty as a character. Since her harem had already reached a cohesive ground in the first book, here it was more about developing those relationships as acceptance from Ari. This developmental effort was more mentions, overviews, off the pages things.

The end fight was rushed and just too quick to reach cliffhanger before it had time to even settle for the impact. The book misses all the opportunities it had to land that impact.

A great new episode in the Shadowborn series.

So much happens in this book, I don’t know where to begin. Ari has made a huge sacrifice for the men she loves and ends up trapped in the shadow realm, with her unconscious body left behind in the normal world. Struggling to get back to the real world she battles to escape and work her way free from the dark and lonely place she is trapped in. She is offered a helping hand by a being of light. She doesn’t know whether to take a chance or not and trust in that help. I recurring theme of her life.

In this book we see Ari start to learn how to accept her own abilities and self worth and trust that maybe she may have something to offer her friends and lovers. However, there are many dark and twisty steps to take before she can reach happiness, especially as supernaturals keep disappearing.

Once again Erin O’Kane writes and interesting plot with well constructed characters and relaxed and enticing writing style. Well worth a read.
