Almighty Ra looks down not from one sun but from all.
When a client hires Esper and Kubu to find a missing holovid costar, they stumble onto a recruiting effort for an ancient cult with a new look. The Cult of Ra died out in Egypt before the Iron Age, but it's been rebranded for the Interstellar Age. More suns for the sun god!
Those crazy gods weren't animals but aliens after all.
Tracking the cult to a lunar theme park, Esper will have to take on an entrenched corporate machine built up over a veneer of affordable fun for the whole family.
With Kubu and Tiffany in tow, Esper will have to protect them while getting dragged along by an overzealous client who thinks he's the kind of action hero he plays in the holovids. An innocent man's life is on the line, but without her magic to protect them all, Esper may have taken on more than she can handle.
Sunshine of Your Cult is the fifth mission of Black Mercy for Hire . It follows the exploits of a pair of do-gooder bounty hunters who care more about saving the day than getting a payday. Mercy for Hire builds on the rich Black Ocean universe and introduces a colorful cast for new and returning readers alike. Fans of vigilante justice and heroes who exemplify the word will love this series.
I am a creator of worlds and a destroyer of words. As a fantasy writer, my works range from traditional epics to futuristic fantasy with starships. I have worked as an unpaid Little League pitcher, a cashier, a student library aide, a factory grunt, a cubicle drone, and an engineer--there is some overlap in the last two.
Through it all, though, I was always a storyteller. Eventually I started writing books based on the stray stories in my head, and people kept telling me to write more of them. Now, that's all I do for a living.
I enjoy strategy, worldbuilding, and the fantasy author's privilege to make up words. I am a gamer, a joker, and a thinker of sideways thoughts. But I don't dance, can't sing, and my best artistic efforts fall short of your average notebook doodle. When you read my books, you are seeing me at my best.
My ultimate goal is to be both clever and right at the same time. I have it on good authority that I have yet to achieve it.
The life of a wizard mercenary is a hard one. It's even harder when the "wizard" part is no longer available. But, needs must and credits need to be earned. And responsibilities don't go away just because magic does. At least Esper, Tiffany, and Kubu no longer have the fear of the Convocation hanging over their heads but that freedom from fear comes with the need to survive which brings them to answering an ad for a...sidekick??? Soon Esper and crew find themselves on a manhunt to find a lost movie star, a manhunt that will take them to new worlds and new moons...and a new Black Ocean spanning cult that may be the threat that brings Esper back to her true mission and her true self. Oh...and...Wesley Wesley!!!!
The saga continues with the 5th book in the MERCY FOR HIRE spin-off in the BLACK OCEAN. Honestly, the author --- Jeff Morin --- has a wonderfully humorous story telling ability that winds through adventure after adventure creating characters that are easy to fall in love with a fully embrace. I mean a Megalodog the size of a house that while still a child is also the ethical voice of the group...and can negotiate with the universe? Or, a 17 year old runaway that has finally found a home but wants nothing more than to live up to the example of the only female constant in her life...a female that may be the one of the most badass mercenaries in the Black Ocean. And, with this story, Morin introduces a new character to the group that, in one moment may be the one to finally drive Esper over the edge, but, in the next could be the piece that has been missing from the small family of friends since its inception.
The best thing about this series...and its two other Black Ocean siblings...is that it is truly a fun and amazingly entertaining read.
Having lost her magic powers (by court order) and picked up another dependent, this would seem like a good time for Esper to... take another bounty contract and make a whole new set of powerful enemies. Oh, did you think I was going to say 'settle down'?
The client, an action holovid star, isn't the only one who's confused about whether they're all in a life-or-death struggle or an on-location holo shoot. The adversaries are hilariously back-lot (but no less dangerous for that), and Esper keeps looking around for the candid cameras.
The prose is perfectly paced. I idled in the cute character moments, pondered when the protagonists puzzled, and bit my nails during the high-action sequences. Some very long arcs are at work here, making me eager for the next episode; while the present conflict resolves satisfactorily by this volume's end.
The cult of toga-wearing, Ra-worshipping, ancient-Egyptian wannabes would earn this installment a 6th star from me, if that was possible.
Recommended for fans of comedic space opera and pulpy costume epics!
Well actually only two months, but with the rapid fire release of the first four book in J S Morin's Mercy for Hire series, it does seem like quite a while for the next installment, but it is well worth the wait.
He continues to use puns on classic rock songs as the titles for these, which I find amusing (but then, I'm easily amused). Sunshine of your Cult follows the further adventures of Esper, a wizard without magic and here not-dog (actually Megalodog) sidekick Kubu (who now can control his size, and finds that sometimes bigger isn't better. They are joined by Tiffany, who they rescued in their first adventure and is now an apprentice wizard without a mentor (but she can do one spell, even if it is better for party tricks than getting out of sticky situations) and Wesley Wesley, an holovid action hero who thinks he is actually the hero he portrays.
It is nice to bring back in a character from a previous book, as it is always fun to see what happens after the story. I really enjoy the cinematic feel of all the Black Ocean books - and this one feels like the beginning of a second season of a favorite show. While the first Mission Pack (all four of the first books are now available together) seemed to be the introduction (or re-introduction, as it were, since it continues the story of characters first introduced in the original Black Ocean series) of the characters, this now assumes you know who they are and just moves forward instead of trying to explain where they came from. And much like a second season, it already seems to be better than the first.
Not only are the characters here important, but the locations play significant roles as well. Not just throwaway set pieces, the two major settings for the story cause problems for our heroes just by them being there. Not directly hostile, they are still both uncomfortable (in completely different ways). Esper misses her magic as it would have kept her from noticing (and I fully expect that this 'season' is going to end with her getting it back (is that too much of a trope that I expect it?)) the environment, as well as now forcing her to find new and creative ways to deal with problems that she is used to handling by simply telling the universe to sit down, shut up, and do what she wants.
Wesley Wesley (I can't see that name without the ST:TNG meme "Shut up Wesley" going off in my head) is a fun new addition to the cast, being a great counterpoint to the others. Big, brawny and with a brain that is closer to the cheese used for bait than the classical steel trap, he helps to skewer some of the traditional action tropes while giving us a nod to them at the same time. Being a star (with the money that comes with it) who believes he is living the in the action holovids that he stars in, he comes in handy when something needs punched, or for that hidden skill set (because just like in a movie, of course he can fly a hovercar) that is just what is needed.
The Cult of Ra ( Almighty Ra looks down not from one sun but from all. ) is set up as a long term antagonist here - and though our heroes may have dealt with one sect in this book, it is clear that they will be back, and much more than the vaguely existential threat that the Convocation was in the first mission pack.
With this release, Morin seems to have hit his comfortable stride with this series, so he can now tell some good stories. I really look forward to more adventures of this crew, and am definitely along for the ride.
Esper and Kubu are back, and where they're going, it's Africa hot! Or rather, Egypt hot! As a birthday gift for Tiffany, Esper agrees to take on a case for Wesley Wesley a (d list) famous actor. Trying to find one man in an theme park secretly run by cultist is going to be a lot harder than Esper was hoping, especially now with the... limitations she has to deal with.
The fifth book in the series, but probably closer to second or third in the 'how much I've enjoyed them' category, this book was hands down fun. I've especially liked Tiffany's character arch. When I met her in the first Mercy for Hire book, I had a pretty good idea of what she was going to be like, and that was a spoiled girl as whiny at the end of the book as the beginning, and never seen after the last page of that adventure. I didn't expect her to keep showing up, and I certainty didn't expect to start liking her as much as I do! (I still adore Kubu the most, he's so perfect I want him to shrink and snuggle with me!) But it's been really cool to see her grow and mature and go on all these adventures, while still very much being the person we met at the beginning. It's probably one of the significantly more believable character growths I've seen. I'm not expected to believe that she became a completely different person, but I can honestly see that she's becoming a better person through her time with Esper. A+ character growth!
J.S. Morin continues to delight me with new worlds, new aliens, new villains, and even some new heroes! Wesley Wesley of course needs to be mentioned! There's something just so delightful about his character, and he made me laugh on a couple of occasions! There's something so genuine and childlike, despite the fact that everything is an act. Maybe because he always mentions what the act is? Whatever it is, I really enjoyed his addition to this story and look forward to seeing more of him in the next book!
I received a free eARC of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
1 Star - Hated It 2 Stars - Didn't Enjoy It 3 Stars - It Was Okay 4 Stars - Really Enjoyed It 5 Stars - Loved It
Ok, take one totally deranged universe with magic and super-tech, add a defanged (as in magic-neutralized) super mercenary (hi Esper), her sorta dog who is not even remotely a dog (hi Kubu) and her virtual daughter who is potentially really powerful (hi Tiffany). Add on a job working for an actor on a life-endangering job they got through an advert and that they only got ‘cause the the girl wanted it as a birthday present and that there’s a pretty culty nutty galaxy- spanning group for your enemy ... whew I’m out of sorts just trying to get this far in describing J.S. Morin’s fantastic Sunshine of Your Cult (Black Ocean: Mercy for Hire Book 5). Let’s just leave it that the result of all this is one heck of a fantastic novel with the superb galaxy-building, fantastic characters (lead and supporting, good and bad guy) and superior writing that fans of this series have come to expect. A total blast that we addicts ... err, fans... have come to expect. (For newcomers this book can be read stand-alone, but trust me that you’ll thank me if you go back and start at the series’ first book. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
Esper is at it again. Playing mercenary, but this time without her magic and with her foster daughter Tiffany, and of course Kubu in tow.
They team up with a holo-hunk who hires them to find a missing co-star.
I really enjoyed this episode. Poor Esper trying to find her way in the Universe without using magic. It was almost as painful to read as it was frustrating to Esper not to be able to rely on those powers.
I liked seeing Kubu take a bigger role in this story. He had to think on his own and figure out what to do on his own as circumstances led him to be by himself away from Esper. Even though it didn't last long it was nice to see what Kubu could come up with in his juvenile mind.
Seeing the relationship develop between Esper and Tiffany was touching. Maybe Tiffany has finally found a "Mom" she can look up to.
Looks like the holo-hunk will be around again for some more action. Which, I'm glad. You kinda get attached to him. He kinda grows on you . I'll be looking forward to more stories with this foursome.
A fast fun read. I recommend this story to anyone reading stories in the Black Ocean Universe or even picking it up for the first time.
A truly fun new twist in Esper's story. Used to relying on magic and the coin of the Convocation to get her through sticky situations, Esper now has to navigate the worlds on her wits, physical abilities, and very meager bank account while coming to grips with what she's lost (and what she has gained). She still manages to find trouble, with the help of her friends, but she also finds solutions, even if her plans usually start out half-baked and under time constraints. Now that she has the added responsibility of looking after Tiffany as well as Kubu, Esper must find a balance between action and thought, considering the danger to her charges as well as to herself. Add in the amusingly clueless Wesley Wesley, who's always looking for that perfect camera angle while hoping to ride to the rescue, and the adventure just keeps coming, with the stakes riding on life and death choices. Esper is building up quite the diverse crew of charming misfits.
Esper, Tiffany, and Kubu find themselves taking a mission from B-list action movie star Wesley Wesley. This missing person hunt takes them to a desert moon which is home to an Egyptian themed amusement park which disguises (poorly) the Cult of Ra's hidden base.
I enjoyed this one. I think one of the strengths of this story is Esper having to figure out how to solve problems without the use of magic. Wesley Wesley sort of stands in to bridge the gap left by the absence of magic for the group, but he brings his own personality to the table (though, I think some of the scenarios in which he imagines he's starring in a holovid to be a bit over the top). Tiffany also has some very brief moments of introspection near the end, but it's all sort of brushed aside quickly, so nothing really comes of it. Overall, another fun, mindless adventure—but I think adding a new character was a good idea.
In the fifth book of the Mercy for Hire series, Esper, Kubu and Tiffany are on a mission to find a missing holovid costar, but they’ve been hired as side-kicks, with the leader Wesley Wesley behaving like they're in a holovid and he’s the action hero. The investigation leads them to the Cult of Ra, which follows Egyptian beliefs and is based out of a lunar theme park with an Egyptian theme. Of course all kinds of humorous, strange and dangerous events occur, and without magic, Esper is at a loss as to how she is going to accomplish what she’s always done so easily. With help from the overzealous action star and the lovable Kubu, Esper will just have to wing it and hope she can keep Tiffany and Kubu safe, as well as locate the missing costar. Of course I’m looking forward to the next story, since it sounds like there’s more Cult of Ra adventures to come.
**** SPOILER ALERT **** "The Sunshine Of Your Cult ( Black Ocean ): Mercy For Hire Mission 5" to me, is the most fun to read of the series. So far, anyway!. Morin does his usual superlative world building and character development. There's plenty of action in this entertaining page turner as Esper, Tiffany and Kubu team up with a holovid star to find his co-star. I highly recommend not just this book, but the whole series that it belongs to. Q: Can Esper rescue Tiffany in the "nick of time" without her magic? A: Grab this book, read it, and find out for yourself! In the interest of transparency: I was given a review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review. It is my own honest opinion.

If you're looking for a fun romp with equal parts adventure, hijinks, silly jokes, and heartwarming moments, this is the book for you. Esper, Kubu, and Tiffany continue to grow and adapt as characters and as people to their ever changing surroundings and circumstances, and Wesley Wesley is a fantastic and hilarious new addition to the cast. This story seems to set up a brand new villain for the next few books, and I look forward to many more Egyptian style misadventures.
With Esper having lost her magic, I was concerned that the stories would change for the worse. I'm glad I was wrong. And boy was I wrong. This was as much fun as any of their other stories and will keep you on the edge of your seat.
With the humor and adventure undimmed, Morin still managed to delve deeper into both Esper's and Tifiny's personalities. Kubu is also growing up into quite the megalodog.
I love this series, but this one just seemed a little 'off'. Couldn't figure out exactly how, and it was a perfectly enjoyable read, regardless. Esper doesn't have access to magic anymore, but Kubu and Tiffany do! (Sorta.) And we get to meet Wesley Wesley, who I thoroughly didn't like at the beginning, but who did grow on me, much like he did on Esper. And it looks like he'll be returning! I'm curious how that will go, are we putting together an entire new crew now?

After the heaviness of the last story this was a perfect backing to it. It showcases all the changes and progress made, and adds a great amount of humor to it as well.
I enjoyed the addition of the new actor friend and do hope we get to see him again. He reminds me of Bruce Campbell and that may have been intentional. I think it adds for an interesting flair and gives some more pool to work with in character development and just progress of story.
I simply *love* the new addition to Team Esper: Wesley Wesley makes a hilarious client/sidekick and dials the team's shenanigans up to 11! This is a great first book in this new story arc, and I can't wait to read more about Esper, Kubu, Tiffany, and now hopefully Wesley, taking on the Cult of Ra.
The fifth book in the Mercy for Hire series finds Esper, Tiffany and Kubu on their way their first job with Esper not able to use her magic. They end up joining up with a holovid "star" and go off to find his co-star who got in with a cult while researching a role. Great read...time for more!
