An around-the-world and back-in-time adventure exploring curious worlds hidden beneath our feet, from underground burrows to ancient cities and shopping malls
This stunning lift-the-flap book takes readers on a journey around the globe and deep underground. There they'll find amazing hidden worlds teeming with life -- from prairie-dog towns and ant cities to opal mines and treasure-filled tombs. Each spread is bursting with details and surprises to discover in the cutaway artwork and under the flaps. With so much to see and explore, this is a perfect gift for young adventurers.
I wasn't completely sure what to expect when I put this on hold at my library. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that each 2-page spread is from a different scene from a different place, around the world. There is a brief introduction about the place, and then the reader has to lift flaps to learn more about who / what lives underground in each place. A neat and interactive way to get children to participate in their learning.
Take a tour of underground areas of the world and see what kinds of things happen under the surface. Each spread features rhyming text describing the place, and then many flaps can be lifted that teach more about the area's inhabitants and features. Locations included in the book are: Montreal's underground, a prairie dog town of the Great Plains of the US, ants of the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil, archaeological digs in Valley of the Kings, Egypt, naked mole rats in Kenya, a Berber village in Matmata, Tunisia, London's Underground, the Wieliczka Salt Mines in Poland, paleontologists in the Flaming Cliffs of Mongolia, Tokyo's underground, opal mines and underground homes of Coober Pedy, Australia, and the Waitomo Caves of New Zealand.
I really like the variety of locations they chose to highlight in this book. It's a good variety of places, both common ones and ones you don't see in books often. The information in the flaps is interesting and I learned a few things while reading this. A great picture book for curious readers, reluctant nonfiction readers, kids interested in life around the world, or those studying underground biomes.
I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
Okay why doesn't adults have a book like this?
I think this book is so cool (do people say cool anymore?) and fascinating. As an adult, I wanted more information, but for a kid, this is guaranteed to peak interest in the topic material of places found underground.
To enhance young readers' interests, there are secret panels with even more exciting facts behind the flaps so they can use visual learning as they turn pages.
Egypt, Montreal, the prairies, Poland and other locations are the focus in the book. You see and learn about hidden wonders below ground and how people made use of this space. Who knows... maybe one day as Earth's population continues to grow, you will see young readers grow into explorers and developers of underground spaces. Maybe, just maybe... they'll spark of interest in this coming from books like this one.
I'm guessing that children have no idea of the many intriguing wonders beneath us. Out in October, this book's journey shows those amazing sites all over the world in a "lift the flap" bonanza! For instance, on the double-page about prairie-dog towns, eight flaps lift to divulge secrets of this underground place, sometimes in poetry and sometimes in prose, readers learn what the "dogs" do, like females with their pups, who to beware of, who might take over the town, like ferrets. Sam Brewster takes us readers to the underground subway neighborhoods in Montreal, London, and Tokyo. "Poland's glistening salt-rock mines,/carved with care throughout the years,/A maze of caves and passageways,/ statues, sculptures, chandeliers." can be found in a marvelous vertical double-page. Graphic art includes so many details that it's hard not to miss some. Then, it's time to look more carefully or return to read again and again. I imagine readers of all ages will adore this book and learning something new! Thanks to Candlewick Press for the copy.
This 2-dimensional journey takes you underground, offering a fun and unique perspective on the world. Thanks to captivating illustrations by Sam Brewster, each 2-page spread captures an entirely new story of life and history happening right beneath the Earth’s surface.
The author, Kate Baker, rhymes her way through each destination. From the Waitomo Caves of New Zealand to the Flaming Cliffs of Mongolia, we are confident the whole family will enjoy reading about these wonders of the underground world. And kids will undoubtedly enjoy lifting each flap, discovering what makes each place so special.
This rhyming board book takes little ones underground in numerous locations. Some are man made, others created by nature, or animals. There's a nice world map in the back that shows where these underground adventures are located around the globe. Readers begin in the Montreal underground, visit the Great Plains, Amazon rainforest, Kenyan grasslands, Valley of the Kings in Egypt, Matmata in Tunesia, London, Polish salt mines, Flaming Cliffs in Mongolia, The Tokyo Metro underground, an Australian opal mine and finally, Waitomo caves in New Zealand. All together a true worldwide adventure, nicely done.
I truly do not understand how this book is not more popular as it's one of our FAVORITES! The main text on each page has a good flow and then each flap has a snippet of information about the scene- I love non-fiction kids books that allow you to decide how deep you want to dive in and this one does a truly fantastic job of that! We utilized this for our Egypt and Underground study the last few weeks (and seriously how perfectly this book fit into that, I can't even!) and it was a huge hit with all my kids! My 3yo will spend ages just lifting all the flaps and studying the pictures and my 8yo wants all the facts- a win for our homeschool shelf!
What an interesting book! Great for kids who are interested in obscure subjects or just everything.
This rhyming, life the flaps book explores underground places all over the world. This includes animals in nature, subway systems, ancient cultures, and different types of mines. It is like a coffee table book for kids. A hot chocolate table book?
Este libro está hermoso. Es como para niños pequeños, de 4-8 años. Cada página muestra la vida subterránea de diferentes lugares y hay pequeñas pestañas para levantar con más datos y dibujos. Recomiendo.
Wonderfully informative! This creative non-fiction picture book opens up the underground world by taking the reader from deep in the underground city of Montreal to the subways of Tokyo to burrows of prairie dog and mole rats. This book will inspire curiosity and a realization that what is on the surface is just that and that there are many hidden gems that go into life on this an amazing planet. Sam Brewster intricately details each 2-page spread page with pop-open doors, windows and crevices to give an ever deeper peek into the teeming underground life. I highly recommend this book. It will excite and instill the desire for the young reader to know about our planet helping to create budding scientists, archaeologists, architects and highly interested and engaged people.
