A comprehensive celebration of girlhood, this title presents a compendium of knowledge, recipes, dastardly tricks, beauty ideas, handicrafts, stories, and activities for girls of all ages.
This book is very much based for younger girls age 9 to 16(ish) but I, as a 19year old did also enjoy this. It has some Wonderful illustrations and it thought me a bunch of interesting things about florals and things to do while babysitting (including games).
When I was around ten years old, my mother bought me the Chinese translation of this book, and it instantly became my favorite childhood read. This book built for me an incredibly romantic world, filled with charming little rituals and delightful details—I could truly feel the authors' love for life in every page.
I remember falling asleep with the book in my arms, and trying my best to recreate the games and activities it described. Even though many of the items mentioned weren’t available where I lived in China, my imagination filled in the gaps.
But when I was thirteen, I accidentally lost the book and forgot its title. Its purple cover remained one of the most bittersweet regrets of my adolescence.
Now, at nearly 24, I’ve finally rediscovered the original edition online. If the authors ever read this, I just want to say: thank you—for creating a fairytale that was both magical and real, for giving me a childhood filled with wonder, and for helping shape me into someone who, like you, loves life and believes in the beauty of little things.
although the only thing I've done is the fortune teller that I failed at miserably when I was 7. The rest of the book looks like it has fun activities for all ages, all places and perfect for all smiling faces. The chapters have amazing names like hair and care, bewitched and crafty creations and gorgeous gifts I wish I cold do them all : ) : )
Nowadays, this book would be considered sexist, so I’m glad it was published almost twenty years ago. It is aimed for girls and its goal is to teach them simple, basic things about culture and everyday life. It teaches girls how to make a manicure, put make up on, sew, cook, gardening, the best books to read, the best movies to watch, as, at the same time, tells the life stories of important women like Marie Curie, Emmeline Pankhurst, Jane Austen, Cleopatra, etc. I loved reading it. It created a romantic and feminine atmosphere around me that I absolutely wanted to maintain on all aspects of my life. I highly recommend it if you are a girl, or have daughters.
Lots of exciting things in life, cultural things that is – theater, painting, music, books, fashion – exist because human beings wanted to make life more exciting. People have not changed much over the years. Obviously the girls and women of today know all about the web and computer games, and most of them can program the HD-recorder while texting a hundred words per minute. But, they all still purr at a video of a kitten and will spend hours experimenting with glitter glue if they get a chance. Our modern world may be a wonder of technological invention but sometimes you just have to spend time making a paper-mâché pinata or a home-made card for that one special person. This book is filled with lots of things to do, old and new. Some of them are tremendously practical and useful, some of them less so. It is also packed with tips no woman or girl can afford to overlook. There are films, books, quotes and jokes to entertain and inspire you. Reviewed on FB.
I loved it, it is so fun and educating. It taught me how to do basic stiches and stuff like that, taught me old rymes, jokes, pranks, how to throw certain kinds of parties, how to cook some types of food etc. My favourite part was the quotes and the female personalities of history. It made me so proud of being a girl.
I was 14 when I read it and I still re-read it and find it very cute and one of the best books I've laid my hands on.
This book was one of the best books for girls I have ever read. It has everything from make-up,pets,crafts,tricks,playwriting,baking,first aid,fortune-teling,games,how to play cards, magic tricks, and best movies and books for girls. It taught me alot of stuff and I still like to look back to it and read fun games or make-up stuff! I really, really, really, really, liked it and I hope you do to!
This book has lots of ideas from cooking to winter to home spare and lots more It isn't that type of book you read chapter by chapter. It's more a cooking book so depending on what you want you flip straight to the chapter. It's great for ideas for certain events and explains everything really well
