Lies and Misdirection #3

Karma Never Loses an Address

Rate this book
Betrayal on Every Level

Marley Bennington had brutally murdered her older sister Samantha in a drug fueled rage. Only two people know that fact as true. One of those two people, was sitting in a state prison, serving a sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. Who was that unfortunate person? Alex Clarke, Samantha Bennington’s husband, the man so buried in circumstantial evidence that he confessed to a crime he didn’t commit, rather than face a trial. He was now trapped with no way out.

It all began as sibling rivalry and jealousy, as so many tales of treachery do. Now, that intense jealousy had ended in her sister’s murder. Once Alex was tucked safely away in prison, Marley was set to inherit millions of dollars tainted with her sister’s blood. But suddenly, two obstacles stood in her way preventing her from quickly obtaining the reward for her well executed plan. One obstacle was her brother, and the other a nosy little old lady. But for Marley, this wasn’t a problem. She had killed twice already and cheated the justice system. What were a few more bodies?

Justice delayed is justice denied. Can Marley be trapped by the very people she tried to deceive? Will karma finally visit her door? Another gripping, tangled tale from the author of Facing A Twisted Judgment.

K. J. McGillick writes legal and psychological thrillers shaped by nearly three decades inside the courtroom and a background in nursing. Her stories are built the way real cases are built — on forensic detail, procedural reality, and the pressure of a system where truth and verdict don't always align.

Art history runs through everything she writes. A lifelong fascination
with forgery, provenance, and the crimes hidden in beautiful objects
threads through her work, alongside a deep interest in Tudor England and the women history tends to misplace or rewrite. Her cozy mystery series range from a Vermont bookshop to a Northumberland village to the windswept Yorkshire coast — each one grounded in place, character, and the particular satisfaction of a puzzle solved.

She is the author of more than thirty independently published works — novels, novellas, and short fiction — spanning legal thrillers, cozy mysteries, and historical fiction. Across all of them, one idea holds: the truth is rarely where people expect to find it.

Originally from New York, she now lives in metro Atlanta — usually with a cup of coffee nearby and a notebook within reach.

My Rating:

4.5

Favorite Quotes:

The next item she handed each of us was a pen that she advised us wrote upside down and could be used in any type of weather. It should have given me pause that she thought we could, at some point, be suspended upside down and needed to take notes.

Honestly, that man had more balls than a pool table.

My Review:

After reading her last book, Facing a Twisted Judgment, I was an instant fan of Ms. McGillick's unique style, which involves a special blend of amusing humor embedded in her intrigue and suspense. This was despite the expletives streaming from my mouth and steam shooting from my ears upon reaching that cliffhanger ending, which oh happy day, reached a conclusion with Karma Never Loses an Address. Karma was even more complex and cleverly nuanced with the chilling fratricidal psychopath Marley taking center stage, and I would have expected nothing less from the diabolically clever Ms. McGillick. My favorite octogenarian, Mary, was well represented but could always handle more attention, as I adore that wily little crone and her lethal handbag. Mary deserves her own book, as she is such a corker. The storylines were well-constructed and multi-layered and told from multiple POVs with several rather complicated yet intriguing crimes taking place. Moral boundaries were smudged and ethics were stretched, but it all worked out to the greater good… essentially ;)

Ha! Karma is a bitch, darling! 😉

Unexpected storyline, liked this concept a lot! Justice comes in different forms, Karma is my favourite 😎

"...for now, I suppose I’ll just have to step back and let Karma finish off what she started..."

I was slightly disappointed when I started this book, since despite it's connected to Facing A Twisted Judgment, the main characters Dalia and Declan wasn't present in it.
Mary didn't have her own chapters, but she was an active investigator. The car scene - Mary, you are the badass!!! 💋

Marley - female murderer and the 'main' villain was written excellent. I hated her, such a cruel heartless person! I only asked myself how could she escape for so long? The last chapters incl her arrest and meltdown were satisfying. She definitely deserved what she's got, even more.
Alex - the male villain from the previous book (what a waste if a beautiful name 🤣) wasn't miraculously set free and jeez. This abhorrent manipulator and cheater also deserved what he's got.

👑 Karma, darling, you are the Queen! 👑

Tallulah - the attorney, who was hired by Eloise and Mary to help with the investigation, was also a good friend. I assume we'll meet her in future books, because her character and also her possible love interest have a big potential.

Marin Steele - an artist, who worked for Tomaso Avanti, the shady art dealer, was a 'black horse' till the end. I didn't expect her to deal the way she did. Bravo! Sooooo cool! 😀
She may become a suspect in one of the future stories, but I still hope to meet her again.

I really enjoyed this book.
It's not your typical crime-mystery, it's deeper.

It's always a pleasure to discover an author, who respects her readers enough to research every aspect she's writing about and to deliver an intelligent book, which makes you think!

4☆ Gripping and Twisty Crime Thriller

Firstly I just want to say how much I love the title for this story, it's so catchy and memorable.

Karma Never Loses An Address is a twisty dark mystery thriller. It's a story of greed, jealousy, secrets, murder, lies, plots and twists.

Marley commits a horrific crime when she murders her Sister.
But instead of owning up to it she frames her Sister's Husband Alex for the murder.
Callous and Twisted I know!
But the worst part he gets sent to prison for it, after confessing.

You see Marley is set to inherit millions now her Sister is dead.
Greed is a terrible trait and never brings happiness.
But Marley is twisted, devious, calculating, ruthless and will let nothing stand in her way.

But is Marley's time about to run out, when Mary and Tallula are hot on her case to prove Alex's innocent and put Marley where she belongs.... behind bars!
Will Karma be served, as they say... "what goes around comes around"

I really enjoyed this pacy crime mystery.
The Characters are strong, well written and not all likeable. I really disliked Marley, but i wasn't meant to like her She's a cold hearted ruthless murderer, with no redeeming qualities. But she made such a great villain.

Karma Never Loses An Address Is a gripping murder crime mystery, that has an enticing mix of suspense, well thought-out, Devious and entertaining characters.
A twisting and engrossing storyline, that is
fantastically plotted and perfectly paced, making for a sinister and satisfying read.

Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Marley Bennington had brutally murdered her older sister Samantha and sucessfully framed Samantha's husband Alex Clarke for the crime. With Alex now safely tucked away in prison, Marley was set to inherit millions of dollars tainted with her sisters blood. But suddenly two obstacles stood in her way,one was her brother and the other was a feisty, old woman.

Mary wasn't happy about Alex's conviction and when Mary gets a bee in her bonnet about something, nothing and no one will stop her getting to the truth. Ok, Alex might be an obnoxious, sleezebag but that didn't mean that her deserved to be locked up for a crime that he didn't commit.

But Mary is pitting herself against a deadly, twisted psychopath who has killed before and is prepared to kill anyone who stands in the way of her obtaining the reward for her well executed plan.

If you have read the previous book Facing A Twisted Judgment then you are already aware that Marley is more than one sandwich short of a picnic. We get to spend a lot of time inside Marley's head throughout this book and she is definitely a very twisted, opinionated and not very likeable character. Neither Jackson,Cillian or Dalia appeared in this story instead the main character was attorney Tallulah West (love that name) who was best friends with Jackson's wife Eloise and was hired by Mary to help her prove her case against Marley. Tallulah had her doubts about becoming involved in the investigation especially considering Alex had confessed to Samantha's murder. But the more they uncovered, the more she began to realise just how deadly and devious Marley really was. Interspersed throughout the book were chapters that were voiced by a young artist called Marin who had been tasked with reproducing replicas of Samantha Bennington's collection of paintings. Unfortunately none of the chapters were voiced by Mary which was a shame because she is a wonderful, vivid character. I think almost everyone would love to be as active and feisty as she is when they get to ninety.

The Italian Mafia, abusive husbands, unscrupulous art dealers and a unstable, crazy woman all combine together in a deception filled game of cat and mouse. There was twists and turns and a couple of intense heroine in danger moments. It's a well written thriller,it's obvious that the author has done a lot of research into the subjects covered in this book. An enjoyable read and I hope the author is planning to write more books featuring Mary in the future.

When I picked up this book I did not realise this was the third book in the series. Although it does not impact any of the reading, it has made me really intrigued to pick up the first two as the one constant in the books is Alex Clarke, especially with the things alluded to in this book. I did get a little bit lost at times with some of the story, however, after re-reading a couple of passages I understood what was going on, just the wealth of knowledge and information is amazing.

I love legal thrillers, I love courtroom dramas the best, so to get an insight into this world is something I really enjoyed. Aunt Mary, well she is a spitfire and a half, she is one crazy lady you want to make sure you stay on the good side of. The story is told mainly through Tallulah's eyes, a family law attorney and from what I can garner a new character in this series. I really liked her as she seemed to be a voice of reason at times.

I love that the author created a character you are not meant to like them, but in Marley’s case, I kind of did like her. Don’t ask me why, there was something about her honesty and determination to get what she wanted, even though she was completely and utterly in the wrong! She is a self-absorbed woman and is out to get whatever it is she wants without thinking of anyone else. She was devious and I think that is what made me like her so much, not normally me – must be my mood!

The depth of the knowledge that Ms McGillick has is amazing, and it definitely enriches the story as you watch it unfold. It is snappy and keeps you on your toes. I am off to get the first two books on Kindle Unlimited so I can see how this story started!

It is true that Karma truly will bite you on the bum!

Having read "Facing A Twisted Judgment" a few months ago, I was super excited to follow the story of the paintings that had caused the in-fighting in the Bennington family and the ultimate murder of Samantha by her sister, Marley.

So, having that insight into the cast of characters for this book I settled down and waited to be entertained. I didn't have to wait long, as once again the author took me on a fascinating ride, telling this latest story from three viewpoints.

Tallulah West, as a practitioner of family law could not have anticipated what she was letting herself in for when she "joined" the team who had initially investigated the missing paintings. But I think the icing on the cake was meeting Mary - it was for me too. Tallulah (Lulu) found herself embroiled in many a scene that challenged her rule-abiding persona, but the pursuit of justice kept her focused on the end game - which hoped to prove that Marley was the murderer who should be behind bars. With Mary as a constant "guide", the path to justice was never dull. Mary deserves a series of her own! Just sayin' ;)

Marley Bennington, at the centre of the story for having killed her sister in the first place, did not go on to redeem herself in this story. In fact, she proved to be just as conniving, manipulative and cold-hearted as ever. She was the sort of woman about whom no-one would have had a good word - apart from her drug dealer maybe - and even that would be doubtful. Marley expected so much from life, hated the word "no", and looked down on almost everyone she met. Was she as clever as she thought she was? I couldn't possibly comment. You'll need to read the book.

Marin, the artist, had an exceptional talent for imitating the works of the great masters. Until now, she had only ever dealt in creating replicas in the style of those artists, so the job ahead of her this time was both more challenging and more dangerous. Marin wasn't one for socializing, or for building friendships. She'd had a tough time at college and sought refuge in her art. I was on her side throughout, and so wanted the best for her. Was I surprised at how things turned out? You betcha! That was a clever twist by the author.

With great characters such as these, the story flowed along at a snappy pace with plenty of bumps in the road. At the outset there was rather a lot of exposition, both in explaining much of the legalese as well as establishing the backstory, but story soon found its groove. I loved the contrast of the serious elements of the crimes committed which were balanced with nice touches of light humour (usually disbelief at whatever Mary did or had done to get the results she did).

Another winning story from one of my new favourite authors.

There were some things that I liked and some things that I didn't with Karma Never Loses an address.

I loved the plot, it was intense and exciting. However, it started out too slow for me and I almost gave up, but I was intrigued enough to keep going. This paid off as the story gained pace and became far more exciting as the book progressed.

I have to say that, if I was in a book shop then the cover would not make me select this book. While I don't dislike the cover, I just thought it could be more striking.

I do wish that I had read the previous book as I feel that it would have enriched this tangled tale, however it is not necessary as Karma Never Loses An Address reads fine without it.

Marley is a dark, self absorbed character who is willing to do whatever it takes to keep the secret of her sisters murder. This includes more murder. While some of the story is told through Marley's thought process, we get to see just how heinous she is.

Marley cannot get her hands on the family millions if she is convicted of her sisters murder. She literally has millions of reasons to make sure that her evil doings are not discovered and will go to any lengths to make sure that her secret remain undiscovered.

With some fabulous characters, this is a tangled tale that, when the pace picked up, kept me on my toes.
I would like to that Rachel’s Random Resources and K.J. McGillick for providing me with a review copy of Karma Never Loses an Address. The gifting of this book has not influenced my review.

I'm really glad I got to read this book. It is very well written and realistic. In case you haven't read the first book then I'm not going to spoil anything for you but I was really hoping a particular character was going to get caught in this book. The character didn't deserve being free after all she had done. The only thing I didn't like is the character Marley, but it is a good thing because that means that author had written her so well to make me not like her character at all. This book is worth reading if you like mysteries and thrillers!

Karma Never Loses an Address is a very gripping novel that kept me interested the entire way through.

I love the family drama that leads to all of the jealousy and ultimately, murder. There are all of these family ties that K. J. McGillick really uses to her advantage to create a really well written and entertaining novel.

I highly recommend checking this one out. It will keep you glued to your seat all the way to the end of the novel.

I didnt like the first half of this book. It was slow, long, and uninteresting. The second half of the book picked up speed and interest, and ended pretty well. I wish there had not been so much language, it was not needed.

WOW! What a wild ride! Ms. McGillick masterfully weaves a tale of intrigue that will leave you unable to turn those pages fast enough. Picking up where Facing a Twisted Judgement ends we watch as most of the characters attempt to 'out-screw' {if that's a word} the next guy on this food chain. With one twist after another, you won't know what to expect next. The way all of the characters are interwoven is a thing of beauty. You will not be disappointed in this one.

Not only do I thoroughly look forward to the other books in this series, I think I have found a new author to explore.

In preparing a closing argument for a case, I searched for a definition of justice to reference and I just could not find a satisfactory one. And in my quest, it bothered me more and more. I had questions but no answers. Thus Facing A Twisted Judgment and Karma Never Loses An Address were born.

These two books are centered around the theme of- just due- justice and karma. But what is justice? I think of justice as what we as a society assign as punishment based on our expectations of people's behavior. Karma is what the universe assigns as your just due; cause and effect. Once a judgment is passed and if it's not adequate does karma come in to finish the job?

It is my hope that readers will use the characters and plot merely as tools to help determine their own definition of justice and karma. Alex is clearly a corrupt attorney who should be jailed and disbarred for his misdeeds. But he faced a life sentence for something he wasn't guilty of. How could he be punished through our court system so severely for something he didn't do? Marley the little psychopath escaped a lethal injection. Sure she went to jail for a period of time for her other crimes but escaped with her life. How could that be fair? And Marin, in the end, tried to escape her bad deeds by transforming the fact she was nothing more than a thief into being a philanthropist. A philanthropist with someone else's money. She escaped justice altogether. Would karma catch up with her?

Society asks us to blindly depend on a judge and jury to determine what punishment should be meted out. But what if our legal system is broken. Should we then hope that karma will find these people to inflict some type of punishment? Or should the aggrieved person be the one to hand out the punishment?

I would love to hear from readers what you feel is justice and karma. When it was time for the characters to do the right thing, make a big move that involves absolutes or to accept responsibility for their actions and move on, did they?

I want to start out by saying that before you take on Karma Never Loses An Address, you should really read Facing A Twisted Judgment first, as it is the story that set all of these events in motion. I know it doesn't show that in the title, but trust me on this. Anyway, Alex Clarke is in jail for his killing his wife, Samantha, but he confessed though he's innocent. Now there's only 2 people standing in Marley's way of inheriting millions, her brother & a feisty old lady named Mary, but Marley isn't worried about getting rid of them, because who cares about a couple more bodies? Only Mary is ready for her, as she's assembled her own team. So this was another twisted tale of murder & mayhem that kept me on the edge of my seat until the end. I mean, K.J. McGillick is straight up diabolical with penning stories that make my head want to explode by I need them badly anyway. Marley is a piece of work in the worst of ways, but Mary, OMG Mary, I hope that I'm her when I'm older. The twists & turns were off the charts insane, so not only did I drop f-bombs like they were hot, but in between, my colorful metaphors were creatively awesome as well. Now, I still don't feel like all of my questions were completely answered, so I hope there's another book coming, hint hint, because I need more! Anyway, that's all from me, except that I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

This crime thriller is a great combination of dark, gritty, shocking, witty, and hard to put down. The characters are rich and colorful from the feisty Mary to the thoroughly despicable Marley - every single one stands out in one way or another. The story is fast paced and I liked that even though this is a crime thriller, it doesn't get bogged down in the procedural side. The investigation is certainly an important part of this tale, but it's presented in a way that kept me riveted to the page. The oh so appropriate title of this book may have been what caught my eye, but the story won me over completely right from the start and the wonderful characters didn't let go even after I'd turned the very last page. This is one that I won't soon forget, and I'll certainly be checking out other works from this author.

I was asked by the author for an honest review.

I liked the complexity of Karma Never Loses an Address (and also the name). At first I thought it would be difficult to follow the story with it told from so many points of view so early in the book, but in the end the characters were so different it was easy to keep them straight. The characters weren't exactly what I expected them to be, which was a nice surprise.

I haven't yet read "Facing a Twisted Judgement", but after reading the description I wish I had read that one prior to reading this one. I'm planning to read that one next.

Hard going

The book started off really well, I thought j was going to be enthralled and find lots of suspects and conspiracy. But I feel really let down.
The first couple of pages really had me convinced it was going to be my kind of book, only to have the thought ripped from my hands, and a cold damp squib left in its place.
The book didn't really have a follow through, it kind of jumped from one person to the other, without really explaining anything
Very disappointed.

Karma Never Loses An Address, is my first book by this author. And I liked it, it was insightful and had a depth I didn't expect.

It's about a woman, who brutally murdered her own sister. But no one suspected it was her, because her sister's husband was convicted for the crime. However, there is a couple of people who are questioning and suspecting that something isn't adding up.

Setting: Georgia, USA; modern day.
Family lawyer Tallulah West is persuaded by her best friend and fellow lawyer Eloise Evans to get involved in an investigation into the death of wealthy socialite Samantha Bennington, allegedly murdered by her corrupt lawyer husband Alex. There was considerable circumstantial evidence against Alex so he opted for a guilty plea under the Alford ruling, which meant that he never accepted his guilt but this plea reduced his sentence.
Now, Samantha's sister Marley is trying to get hold of Samantha's valuable collection of paintings and control of the estate whilst the security firm run by Eloise's husband Jackson is trying to stop her. At the forefront of this action is an elderly woman called Mary, who works for Jackson's firm but is renowned for bending the rules to achieve her ends...
The story is told from a number of different points of view, primarily those of Tallulah and Marley. It is clear to the reader almost from the outset that Marley is the murderer - and she is not averse to killing anyone else who gets in her way in this rip-roaring, Coen Brothers-esque escapade. Highly entertaining and with several laugh-out-loud moments as Karma eventually comes to call for Marley. I haven't read the previous books in this Lies & Misdirection series but don't think it detracted at all from my enjoyment. Nevertheless, I intend to go back and read the earlier books and look forward to reading more by this author - 9/10.

Mary's back!!!

Karma Never Loses An Address is the third book in the Lies and Misdirection series. I loved this book that took up where Facing a Twisted Judgement finished. Little old lady, Mary, and her lethal handbag are back to help find the truth in Samantha's slaying. This is a topnotch read, fast-paced and full of twists. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

Mary isn't finished with Marley and Alex Clarke. She isn't satisfied that he actually killed his wife, which we know he did not. But Samantha's sister Marley thinks she has finally gotten her sister's money. Not if Mary has anything to say about it, which she does...and a lot of it! I just love Mary!!! She is a take no prisoners kinda gal with a sense of humor that is sharper than a chef's knife! I enjoyed this story very much. This is a great follow up to Facing a Twisted Judgment.

This book flows the evil Marley as she continues on her never ending path to gain control of the Bennington estate and the paintings she covets. However now she has a problem, on paper she has assets but she has no money until probate is finalised and she is declared the legal owner. In her desperation she is referred to an art dealer that can help her out but at a cost.

Meanwhile the team that helped to convict Alex Clarke aren’t happy that he sits behinds bars while Marley gets away with murder. They initiate their own plan to prevent her obtain the paintings.

So who will end up triumphant, Marley, the lawyers or may be Alex Clarke?

Great read. Again, had trouble putting it down, so, I put it aside until I could devote an entire day to read it, which I did. Ms. McGillick's books are just not the kind you can put down and come back to later. I had put it down at about 20% read and when I picked it up again after finding a day that i could completely devote to reading this book, I started from the beginning again. Continuity is essential in reading this series of books. But, this time I prepared meals for the day in advance so I didn't have to grab snacks here and there while reading. When I get into a book, I get into a book. I am nothing if not an avid reader.
Aside from a great story line, the characters are stimulating. Each personalty is unique, albeit somewhat crazed, most particularly Marley. She is a nut job extraordinaire. It is not because she is a rich, spoiled brat, but because she is mentally unbalanced. Talk about a psychopath. She should, in truth, be put away for life. The world is not safe with her running around loose.
Unfortunately, I could not give this book 5 stars, due to Chapter 15. In that chapter Tomaso and Marin get into it. He slaps her in the face and she, in turn, kicks him in the groin and smashes (probably breaking) his nose into her knee and runs out leaving him in a ball of pain. Great, but this is never brought up again. I cannot in good faith believe that Tomaso took this in stride and simply by-passed it, never bringing it up again or making her pay, in any way, for damaging him.. That really doesn't make sense. In other words, I was left in a position that I cannot stand in a book - that of being left hanging, with no explanation ever given. In any case, the book lost continuity at this point and then picked up elsewhere, never to return or refer to that occurrence. Although the balance of the book was exemplary, that chapter stuck in my mind, because it was not logical and did not fit. Very disappointing. It also surprised me that Ms. McGillick would do this. She is a much better writer than that.
In any case, I look forward to the next book in the series. Hopefully, this will not disappoint in any way and will continue an outstanding series.
