The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library

Happy Pi Day to You! All About Measuring Circles

Rate this book
Join the Cat in the Hat as he explains how to measure circles and calculate pi in this perfect choice for Pi Day celebrations and nurturing a love of math and numbers!

The Cat in the Hat makes calculating pi—one of the most fascinating numbers in mathematics—as easy as pie! Using a piece of string and two sticks, the Cat first shows beginning readers how to draw a perfect circle. Then, using a can and a piece of ribbon, he shows how to measure a circle's circumference and diameter, and to use those measurements to calculate pi. Also included is information about the history of measurement and famous Pi Pioneers!

Written in simple rhyme, Happy Pi Day is a natural choice for celebrating Pi Day (held annually on March 14), and for nurturing a child's interest in math. Fans of the hit PBS show The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! will be delighted at this new addition to the Learning Library series.

Pi day was always a big deal at my high school. We'd have contests to recite as many digits of pi as possible, have pie eating contents, and at 1:59, there'd be a Pi Day announcement (because 3.14159...

This was a very simple book (it's for kids, after all), but it packs a lot of information into it. If you're trying to get a younger reader interested in math, this is a great book to add to their shelves. You'll learn a whole lot about pi, and other measurements, too. And I'll be honest, I definitely learned something!

What a fun book! I wish we'd had this when my boys were younger and we first started celebrating Pi Day together. Not only does it give an easy to understand explanation of Pi, but great math game ideas, and -- my favorite -- introduces children to sixteen real life "Pi Pioneers" or historical mathematicians, with resources in the back to find out more. Inspiration for further research! And darn it, now I want my own Pi Hat made out of pie pans. :-)

I guess I'm happy this exists if it makes learning math more fun for kids. But I'm not really sure who the audience is for this. When do they teach kids about pi these days? Would those kids still enjoy this silliness? Is it more for introducing the concept to younger kids ahead of actually learning it in a practical sense? Maybe I'm just biased cause I'm not a big Dr Seuss guy.

I wish this gave a little info about each of the "Pi Pioneers." It had several historical figures mentioned, and I know it's just a kids book, so it's just a stepping stone, but I wish there had been maybe a couple pages at the end like a glossary about the figures mentioned in the book.

Part of The Cat in the Hat Learning Library.
The Cat teaches readers about circles. He offers information and terminology leading up to teaching Pi. The illustrations are as colorful and detailed as expected. Readers get to interact with the book.

I loved how this book was basically a non-fiction book on a sugar rush. I love how it goes in depth and uses the correct math terms. It's a great book to introduce the concept of pi with kids and learn the vocabulary. My kids enjoyed this book some what they didn't like how long it was and grew bored towards the end. But this book was really good and the illustrations are colorful and really draw your attention to it. The book is a little hard to read-aloud but it's worth checking out for sure.
