RICHARD SCARRY is one of the world's best-loved children's authors EVER! In his extraordinary career, Scarry illustrated over 150 books, many of which have never been out of print. His books have sold over 100 million copies around the world, and are currently published in over twenty languages. No other illustrator has shown such a lively interest in the words and concepts of early childhood. Richard Scarry was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Illustrators in 2012.
One of many favorites at bedtime. I enjoyed other books and the TV show from Richard Scarry's world of talking animals. A great way for kids to enjoy learning manners.
Richard Scarry was a world class Children's author that my mom really enjoyed....which is why, in honor of children everywhere, I'm so happy to dump on this overly sterile, deprecating bastard. His illustrations are first rate, which is the least of his problems since they are there to hide the little messages of hatred and force fed moralist about being ostracized for having an independent mind. Six mini stories involving Scarry's animal creations preach the same bullshit you find in the Bible, which makes the bullshit that more palpable. Every page has something sounding like OOO! LOOK AT THIS PEST FOR PESTERING MOM WITH QUESTIONS! DON'T BE LIKE HIM KIDS! This lesson has been proven false over and over again, and not a good way to educate or inspire children. I'm very upset that Scarry is honored for his contribution to childrens lit with cute stories that mask tripe about exclusion based on being yourself, and everyone must fit into society by dressing up a certain way or washing hands, lessons ineffective in the reality where cleanliness and Godliness are equated with repression and control. One star No more Scarry, PUH-LEEZE AND THANK YOU!
I really dislike this book. It attempts to teach manners in a very simplistic, preachy, nagging way. I can't imagine that hearing a list of things you should and shouldn't do (even with parental commentary) is going to sink in, and I even worry about putting new ideas of bad things into my two-year-old daughter's head ("wait, you can light things on fire?"). I'd give it one star, but my daughter inexplicably wants to read it every day, so it gets three.
Not a fan of this book. It is very annoying to read out loud. It's preachy and full of copaganda. One highlight though was when Sergeant Murphy's daughter 'didn't know' not to leave toys on the stairs and he slipped on a ball and fell down the basement stairs. You're a real one Bridget.
This book has many good short stories to teach kids about manners in different situations. We have been trying to teach our daughter about whining and the "Pest" story has finally hit the concept home for her! There are some outdated things in the book but pretty much everything still rings true in today's world.
I had a bunch of Richard Scarry books as a little kid but not detailed memories of which ones. When my 2 1/2 year old was gifted this one to teach her manners, memories of Pig Will and Pig Won't came flooding back to me. Apparently there's also a longer book named after them, published 11 years later... I'm going to have to pay attention to whether Pig Won't, whose name changes to Pig Me Too, is in any books besides those two, and whether he remains Pig Me Too or forgets what he learned. Anyway, it's a very good book. Scarry's illustrations are great and my daughter has asked for it dozens of times in just a few days, even though it teaches manners.
Overall good book, useful for teaching good manners to children. It is geared just right for the kindergarten age group. My children found it very funny & entertaining. I feel the book could have been organized a bit better. I wish there weren't so many blatant examples of bad behavior in the book. Also, the example of giving someone who gives you a present a "BIG kiss", otherwise according to the book you are stingy.....well, for several different reasons this is just a bad idea and certainly should not be taught to children in 2013.
Richard Scarry created many stories that capture scenarios in which different greetings would be used as well as how to be respectful of different people in one's life. This book can teach younger children how to be polite and use proper manners, which will be important throughout the rest of their lives.
I love most Richard Scarry books but this one was so chaotic and disorganized. And on top of it, I think it might be overboard in telling children ALL the things they should and shouldn't do. I can do that as a parent when/if the time does comes.
I love how it can be for all. everyone needs to know this. one day my kids will read this and know it by heart! <3 hope one day everyone will be like the pigs and cats in this book!!
This book has many important messages for young kids about manners. It is great to read to students who may need to learn manners or are struggling with manners. It has many short stories included with lots of pictures, which I liked about the book.
I thought this book had an interesting take on it because it was full of different stories that didn't correlate with one another. I enjoyed the stories, but if you're reading it to younger children, I'd recommend reading one story at a time so students aren't confused.
Not great for the age group I was hoping to read for. Def more early elementary age rather than toddlers. Many mini stories showing good manners . Some were funny and informative in a way a child would enjoy listening to and learning good manners
Another enjoyable book! A fun way to look at how to treat people. (Also the worm?? Why does he live with the cat family? Is he a renter? But he's a kid right?) I still enjoyed it immensely even with the weirdness.
Nagyon kedves Tesz-Vesz könyv. Még egyszer el akartuk olvasni, mielőtt továbbörökítjük. A gyerekek nem szeretnek kinőni belőle (és én sem). Mindig örömmel követik ezeknek a különlegesen bájos karaktereknek az újabb kalandjait.
Over the years this book has helped my children to understand certain concepts within obedience and considerate living. My favorite section is "Lowly Worm's Horrid Pests".
Love love love love this book. Read it to my son often and it taught him some valuable lessons which as an adult served him well. His most favorite book.
