From New York Times bestselling author Addison Moore comes a riveting novel of psychological suspense.

When a supposed serial killer and a supposed psychopath come together, things end very very badly—one bloody body at a time.
Someone is guilty. Someone is lying. Someone will not survive.

Aubree Van Lullen is smitten by Peter Woodley despite the fact he’s accused of killing his former wife, despite the fact he’s accused of killing his two children.

Peter Woodley is smitten by Aubree Van Lullen despite the fact she is accused of fleecing half of the country by way of faking an illness for the better part of her life, despite the fact she’s had a psychologically damaging childhood. Peter is so smitten by Aubree, he changes his identity for her and whisks her away to build a brand new life.

One day a mysterious package arrives containing dozens of journals from Peter’s first wife, and Aubree is riveted by them.
She’ll tell Peter about the journals soon enough.
Just one more page and then he can have them.

And then there are the bodies. One after another, wherever Peter seems to go, a grisly homicide takes place. Something is amiss. Aubree untangles one dark secret after another, only to have her own past come back to haunt her.

But it’s far from the end of her story. It’s just the horrible beginning.
Sometimes when a supposed serial killer and a supposed psychopath come together, things can end very very badly.
And they do—one bloody body at a time.
Someone is guilty. Someone is lying. Someone will not survive.

Oh dear. Looks like I am going against the tide here.

I read The First Wife's secret in one sitting. It is not that long. I started off liking it but changed my mind. Why?

Well..first off..the blurp on what it is about is misleading. I thought I was getting a book not all that different from "My lovely wife". But I w as wrong.

Second..it is a dark and grim story. I do like the author's writing. She writes very well. What I did like was her dark humor which was very entertaining and did keep me reading.

I see many a person loves this. But for me, nothing I was reading seemed realistic. Nothing at all.

Dead bodies are turning up everywhere and the police don't make the connection? I would have expected Peter to be arrested after the first body.

Also..other then Peter and Aubrey nobody had a personality. The three mean women were interchangeable. There was not anything to differentiate one from the other. Nor were the husbands developed.

The mother is portrayed as just insane but that's it. The sister did not have much character development. I did not feel like anyone was portrayed with any sense of realism. Ashley was just a she-cat coming onto Peter. The mother was just evil. The husbands were nonentities. I did not understand or know these people.

There was a feeling of darkness through the story but not in a good way. I kind of just wanted to get to the end.

Then there is the animal violence. And I guess I need to put SPOILERS:

I knew exactly what would happen to the poor rooster as soon as he was introduced as a character. Look..I do not like animal violence in my reading and always take off a star for that. And I know so many others who feel that way. I do not get why some authors have to kill off animals in such brutal ways. But this was so unnecessarily disgusting what happens to the rooster. And to Ashley. The police..they are sort of non existent in this book.

So to sum up..this was a let down although I seem to be in the minority on it. The pluses are good dark writing and a stunning cover but that just wasn't enough for me.

So uhm, I actually did not really care much for this book.

When I read the blurb I got really excited since it sounds amazing, right? However, the blurb in my opinion is very misleading.
I went into the story thinking there would be a dynamic between a possible serial killer and a possible sociapath, but it was not the case.
Peter and Aubree are already married with kids and established. They move to a new area where suddenly young women end up dead.

I just, I really tried to like this book but I just felt it was very predictable, the characters were annoying and almost whiny and the major plot twist seemed to have been grabbed out of thin air. Just not believable at all.

2 stars.

The story had it ups and down. Some parts were boring and others, exciting. I was on chapter three when I decided this book wasn't it for me. When parents chose not to vaccinate their kids, fiction or not, that drew the line for me. I skimmed the rest just to stamp it as done reading.

The blurb was misleading. It was witty if the writer was heading that way and yet I feel cheated. And yes, I did get it the first time, Bram was to die for. And yet, the writer felt the need to remind us that fact everytime Rene appeared.

The kids were mentioned but their presence was lost in editing probably. Third point of view probably will work better.

The scene at the birthday party was truly comical. It was out of place like a bad filler.

One good side, it's a novella.

What an absolute mess of a book. It was like somebody ripped the pages out of 4 different books and glued them together to make one. It didn't make any sense and the main characters POV was terrible. I had it figured out after the third chapter which was fine because then I could let my mind wander and figured out what was up with the chicken obsessed woman. The only reason why I kept reading was to see if any more light was shed on to her background story. Nope. Would not recommend this book unless its to somebody you strongly dislike or if you have a crazy mother like Ree (even that nickname annoys me).

The First Wife’s Secret is an intriguing thriller with an interesting premise that seems to fall victim to several cliches, only to be undone by a rather disappointing plot twist. A husband and wife, Bram and Aubree, decide to wash away their imperfect past and start anew in sunny suburbialand. All is well in their perfect little family of four, until their past resurfaces at their front door. As their fabricated life begins to crack, Bram and Audree quickly realize they can't escape what they left behind. Addison Moore flips back and forth, chapter to chapter, between the perspectives of both Aubree and Bram to unravel their chilling secrets.

Overall, this book had potential, but it simply fell flat for me. I’ll give it two stars.

Spoilers Ahead

What Moore did well:
Addison Moore is a good writer. I did not have any issues with the fluency or grammar of this novel. As other readers comment, it isn’t very difficult to complete. The scenes in which Aubree “Ree” and Bram “Peter” speak about each other with love and adoration are the highlight of the novel. Additionally, Moore paints a vivid depiction of terror in this novel. This is a true psychological thriller.

Aubree is the only character in this novel who is properly fleshed out. In the beginning, I’ll admit that I judged her character quite harshly. The insecure wife trope is quite overplayed. However, I was pleasantly surprised by her depth as the story moved along. The audience learns Aubree and her sister, Lena, start over in life due to their abusive childhood characterized by their histrionic mother. Aubree meets Bram, i’ll get to him, in a dive bar, and the rest is history. They start a family and build a life together. When Aubree reads the journals of Bram’s late ex-wife Simone, whom he is still legally married to, Aubree feels with Simone. I was delighted by her ability to humanize Simone when she could have easily resorted to her insecurities and branded Simone as the “crazy ex.” Readers can feel Aubree’s rage, jealousy, empathy, and remorse. She is the most whole character of the book, by far.

What I think Moore did not do well:
What I did dislike was the content of the book itself. Essentially, every other character was disappointingly one-dimensional. Bram, who narrates half of the story, is incredibly unlikable. Every sentence from him is either a dental pun, paranoia about his past, or hatred of Simone. What I couldn’t quite understand was what exactly Bram was running from. His children passed away unexpectedly, and his ex-wife was brutally murdered. This is incredibly traumatic, and anyone would want a new start following those life events. However, I couldn’t quite understand his incessant paranoia. He even describes himself to the effect of having a “reverse midas touch.” But why? Additionally, I couldn’t quite understand his relationship with Simone. They clearly had a rocky relationship, but what went on there? Was it abusive? Did she have poor mental hygeine? His hatred for her seems borderline unbearable. Even Aubree, who has never known Simone from a hole in the wall, affords her more grace than Bram who was married to her for 8+ years. Moore does an excellent job describing Lena and Aubree’s abusive past, so why couldn’t the same description be afforded to Bram’s relationship with his late wife?

I might have the answer. I regret to accuse Moore of trying to outsmart the audience, but it feels as though that is the case. Aubree learns Bram had an affair during his last marriage via Simone’s old journals. The plot of the story sets itself up as though Bram is doing the same to Aubree and might be responsible for all the recent murders. Only for the plot to take a nonsensical twist, where Simone, who was previously blugeoned to death, is resurrected and responsible for all the murders in the novel. Supposedly, Simone rewrote history and delivered the journals to Aubree. As readers, we are supposed to believe that the only truth about Bram in the journals is his infidelity, despite doubting him for the greater part of the plot. An unfaithful murderer for a husband is not a profound story, but a few more pages of context could have added more depth and saved this novel. Would it have been ground-breaking? Probably not. But it could have saved the story’s descent into complete absurdity.

The same could be said for the supporting characters as well. What makes Lena rekindle her relationship with their mother? What is going on in Astrid’s marriage? The other two mothers in the PTA are completely forgettable, as our fellow readers have mentioned.

Ultimately, The First Wife’s Secret isn’t a horrible novel, but an incomplete novel.

The First Wife’s Secret is about Ree receiving Simone’s journals. Simone was Peter’s first wife. Peter lost his wife and kids ten years ago. He was at a deep dark place in his life. He met Ree at a bar and it was love at first sight.
Both thought they buried the past, but when Ree found a dead body at a fundraiser Bram grew concerned that someone was out to get him. He’s a supposed serial killer. He was initially accused of killing his former wife and kids. Ree was a supposed psychopath who was accused of faking her illness for profit. Both are running from their past. There lives collided together intersecting at just the right time.
With new names they moved to Percy Bay, a small seaside community in mid-coastal Maine. Ree’s sister lives across the street and owns a coffee shop in town. Bram is a dentist and Ree is a stay at home mother.

This reads much like a cozy mystery with the humor layered in. There’s a murderer on the loose. While it looks as if someone is sending a message to Bram Ree is also receiving messages of her own. It seems neither is able to escape the clutches their past holds on them.
Addison delivered two perspectives one from Bram the other from Ree. Ree’s character revolves around her relationship with her mother and sister while Bram’s character revolves around his relationship with his brother and the neighborhood women who flirt with him.

This is a fast easy read with an original storyline. I’ve read quite a few books by Addison Moore. Her contemporary romances are my favorite. While the writing style is great in this book it’s just okay. It wasn’t the page turner type of story. Although it had some unexpected twists and some fun witty dialogue. It was missing the gripping storyline I look for in a psychological suspense.

When Addison Moore goes ahead and writes a standalone novel, I never know what to expect, because honestly she can surprise you at the best of times. When I picked up this book, I wasn’t sure what I would find, but after a tricky start, I did find myself enjoying the story, although I found that there was something missing which I couldn’t quite put my finger on. The beginning was a bit slow, but it did build up and keep me interested in finding out what was going to become of the story and Addison managed to do a pretty good job with this one. I found the writing to be good as always, the plot worked but there was just something missing that I can’t figure out. The one thing that I did find that was missing is that I would have liked to have known more about the outcome, how things progressed in the end, just that little bit more detail and it would have been a perfect ending. I do recommend that you give this book a read as it was a good story, plus Addison’s work is always amazing.

Bram’s and Ree have both been running from their pasts, something neither of them are willing to share more than they need to, to each other. However, no matter what, it seems like life doesn’t want to give them a break. They have two beautiful children, Bram’s got a full-time job in the profession that he loves and they’ve both just moved to a new area to hopefully start a new life where they won’t have to constantly look over their shoulders. Everything should be going perfect for them, but for some reason life doesn’t always work out the way that we want it, it seems like someone is out to get them both, but who on earth could it be?

I've read the majority of Addison Moore's books and it's obvious by now that she just can't be confined to one genre. Her ability to tackle romances, mysteries, thrillers and fantasy is uncanny. The First Wife's Secret is a deviously delicious psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat all the way through. I can usually guess "whodunnit" in a story, but this one had so many twists and turns that it kept me guessing until the end. Bram and Bree seemingly have built the perfect life together —2 kids, a dog and beautiful house—but the skeletons in both of their closets could be deadly. They've moved to a small town to escape the horrific accident the took Bram's previous family from him and they're looking to completely start over, but somehow their pasts follow them and create a whole lot of trouble. When dead bodies start popping up everyone is under suspicion—including each other. When a box containing Bram's deceased ex-wife's journals appears on their doorstep Bree can't contain her curiosity and begins reading them, which causes her to question some of the details of Bram's past including the suspicious circumstances in which his ex-wife was murdered. Once doubt and fear have entered a marriage can there really be any going back? This fast-paced thriller is one you won't want to miss. I'm glad I didn't.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

An intense tangle of a family’s tightly knit knot.

Paul and Simone have a rocky marriage. He’s ready to call it quits. Then the unthinkable happens. Their two small children drown at the lake that they’re so accustomed to swimming in. How could that happen? Shortly after, Simone is found bludgeoned to death in their home. Can a family handle so much grief?! Paul is looked at with suspicion but is later found not guilty. He has no choice but to start his life over.

He then meets his current wife, Aubree. He tells her about his past and she’s willing to stick with him and accept their new identity. He’s in love with her and their two children in a way he never has been. She has wounds of her own from childhood and they both mesh perfectly. Then, women start to turn up dead. The same way his ex-wife Simone did. How is this possible? Who is behind this and why?!

Trigger warning: There is an animal death. What was going on in this book? Like for real. I saw this and read the back and was like ohh up my alley let me see what is going to happen. Now, it is not a long book and one I read in one sitting (kinda made my hubby jelly lol). With that said. Dead bodies showed up and not one officer or detective showed up to piece anything together. Also, why was Peter never arrested? I felt like this book left a lot out. Now let's talk about personality characters. None of them had anything going on with them that made them stand out. I just felt it left out a lot that it needed to make it a great story. It just felt like it was a story without any wow factor it was just bland. I may try to read something else by this author to see if her writing gets any better.

Addison Moore hits this waaaaay out of the park!!
Once you pick this book up, good luck putting it down. Now, i like to pride myself on being able to solve the mystery long before the book gives me the answer. This. Book. Kept. Me. Guessing. And by the end of the book, you will not believe the ending!! (I actually scared my fiance when i suddenly yelled "PLOT TWIST" in a quiet room)

The First Wife's Secret is one of my new favorite books!! It's one I plan on buying in paperback to add to my 'Addison Collection'.
It's not just a page turner, it's a, Keep you on the edge of your seat, guessing game!!
I've already recommended this book to several of my friends, and now I'm recommending it to everyone!!!

Quick read

I enjoyed the book, it was a quick read for me. I personally wanted to get more of a backstory on Simone; her parts seemed incomplete I like to get to "know" the characters, it helps me figure how they fit in. I hope Ms. Moore will continue to write psychological thrillers. I have read alot of psychological thrillers this book was recommended to me by one of my free book sites I receive daily emails from; I usually read the more grittier books. It is nice to read a novel by an author I have never read before.
I was easy to read and it wasn't difficult to follow. I figured out who was the killer early on in the book but I continued reading to see how the book came together. Thank you for not bogging for bogging the novel with unnecessary details.

Addison shines in her slaying of the mystery genre. The First Wife’s Secret is a non-stop page turner, that leaves you on the edge of your seat. Ree and Bram both have lead lives nobody would wish upon anyone else. Together they built a solid foundation of a life that is slowly being torn away by dout and fear. The only question is who is causing them to crumble slowly under the guise of it being a woman who is suppose to be dead?
This book is exactly what a good mystery is suppose to offer. Edge of your seat emotional roller coaster, that makes the heart race. Causing the inability to ponder on anything else but solving the mystery unfolding.

Addison Moore has done a wonderful job with this book! It has so many twists and turns. It kept my wheels turning the whole time and the end the conclusion was not what I would have ever expected! Bram and Ree seem to have a wonderful relationship. Married with two kids and they seem to have it all....including each of their own pasts they'd rather not revisit. They decide to leave town and start over away from anything that reminds them of their pasts. It's never that easy though, is it? When dead bodies start popping up and creepy anonymous emails are being received doubts will arise. Do Ree and Bram really know eachother like they think they do? Do they even know themselves??

Ms. Moore never disappoints, nor do her stories. This story introduces us to Ree and Bram, a couple that seems to have a perfect life and relationship. However, there are a ton of secrets behind their closed doors. Secrets hidden in both of their pasts that turn their perfect life into utter chaos. I don't usually enjoy psychological thrillers, but this one was a rollercoaster ride that I really enjoyed. The characters are well developed and perfectly dynamic. The story line is fast paced enough to keep me interested but not so fast that I get lost. This book gets a huge 5 stars from me. Get a copy of this one today, you won't be disappointed!

***I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.***
I have read many of Addison Moores books and I have loved each and every one. However, this book was just not my style and I could not get into this. This was just not my type of genre and after reading about half the book, I decided I could not read anymore.
As usual, Addison Moore's writing was impeccable and the story line was great for the part I read, but I just could not get into this. If this is the type of genre you like, then this is right up your ally. Give it a try, but not for me.

While I had started reading Addison in her Celestra series, I have quickly learned that she is not limited by one genre. While she can make you swoon with her romance, she can also leave you on the edge of your seat with her mysteries. Now tackling psychological thrillers, Addison knocks it out of the park, keeping you on your toes in this book and blowing your mind in the end. I have never been a huge fan of this genre, but being a fan of Addison’s I gave it a shot and am not sorry I did. Definitely opened my eyes to the beauty a good thriller can offer.

Freaking fantastic read

I will not review what this book is about, it drives me crazy when people tell you what you can already read for yourself. This is the first book I have read by this author. I will certainly be reading much more from her. This book grabs you from the first page and doesn't let you go until it's finished. I always look for that sentence in a review or this was a book that will keep you up all night because it will. Please do yourself a favor and check out this book. It really is a freaking fantastic, fast read. Recommend 100%.

So. One star. I don't want to sound cruel because I know writing is incredibly hard work that comes from a personal place, always. That being said... The plot was tangled in so many subplots, the characters were inconsistent and jumped to so many conclusions. If the main characters had just TALKED to one another they could have figured it out in half the time (like I did). The writing was repetitive and featured a lot of jarring and sometimes misused vocabulary. Ultimately not worth the time. Wah, wah.

Intriguing story

When a supposed serial killer and a supposed psychopath come together, things are never what they seem.
Ree and Bram appear to be the perfect couple, on the outside. They've recently moved to Percy Bay to start over, with their two children
However, the pasts they are both running from, come back to haunt them faster than they could ever imagine.
Very intriguing storyline, with a fantastic twist.

If you like dark suspenseful mystery, you will love this book!

I had read Addison Moore's cozy mysteries, but nothing prepared me for the depth of this dark mystery. This book has suspense, deception, subtrafuge, lies and more. All tied up with a neat black bow! It will keep you second guessing what you thought you knew about the characters right up to the bitter end. Can't wait to crack open her next book!

Wow. I'm speechless. This was really good. I didn't know who to trust. I hated those PTA sluts so much lol. They were vapid, shallow, catty and immature women. I will never understand how some women could be envious of another woman's relationship.

Bree and Bram's chemistry was lacking but the events in the story made up for that. I will definitely read from A. Moore again.

I *really* wanted to like this book. And, at first, I did.

But, at a certain point in the book, one of the main characters, Ree, starts acting completely irrationally and out of character, and her motivations stop making sense. It was like her behavior was changed to create more conflict, not because it made sense for the character or the situation.

It's not worth starting this.
