A Handcrafted Mystery #2

A Crafter Hooks a Killer: A Handcrafted Mystery

Rate this book
Sure to delight fans of Betty Hechtman and Maggie Sefton, A Crafter Hooks a Killer is the second installment in Holly Quinn’s Handcrafted mysteries.

Community Craft proprietor Sammy Kane suspects that a tantalizing thread links the deaths of her best friend and a bestselling author. But can she weave together the clues?

Samantha “Sammy” Kane is settling into her new life in idyllic Heartsford, Wisconsin, running her late friend Kate Allen’s craft shop, Community Craft when one early June day, bestselling crochet author Jane Johnson visits Heartsford. Captivated by Community Craft, Jane devotes a chapter in her new book, Behind the Seams, to the store. Sammy is honored, though satisfaction quickly turns to shock when she finds Jane strangled to death—her cold hands clutching a copy of her most recently published book, with the words “THE END” raggedly scratched into the cover.

Heavens to Etsy! Not only must Sammy contend with the author’s inauspicious demise, she has to untie some knotty details from her own past. It turns out Kate’s death was not what it seemed, and instead somehow hooked to Jane Johnson’s demise. Handsome Detective Liam Nash is on the “skein”, more than happy to see the shop owner again, if less than enamored by her sleuthing interventions. But this was Sammy’s best friend—she has to know.

Fortunately, Sammy has a “lace” in the hole. As a child, she formed the S.H.E. detective team with her cousin, Heidi, and her sister, Ellie. Having already reconstituted their partnership, the S.H.E. team searches for a pattern behind the latest death. As the case starts to unravel, will Sammy and team be able to sidestep Liam quick enough to stitch together the clues?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We are back in Heartsford, Wisconsin, and it’s summertime. Sammy Kane is planning for a big event at Community Craft. A book signing with Jane Johnson, The Queen of Crafts. Jane is also writing a new book that will include one chapter about Community Craft and its original owner, Sammy’s best friend, Kate Allen.

The author surprises Sammy by arriving in town early and requesting a private meeting with her. They agree to meet on a bench by the river. Sammy arrives a short time after Jane, but she is waaayyyy too late. The author is dead and holding her last book. The killer has scratched a deadly message too, “THE END” on the book. Sammy knows the author wanted to talk to her about Kate and the store, but why would anyone kill her over that?

The death brings Sammy back together with Detective Liam Nash which seems to make them both very happy. But Liam tells her to let him handle the case. There is no way Sammy can do that. This case has something to do with Kate and she can’t just back away. She quickly assembles the S.H.E. team (Sammy, her cousin, Heidi, and her sister, Ellie) to help her untangle the clues. Together they are going to chain the information together to find the killer and get to the truth they all seek.

___

I was so excited to get back to Heartsford. I really enjoy the part the community plays in Holly Quinn’s stories. This time when the murder ruins Sammy’s big plans, she starts to plan another event that will benefit the town.

The core characters in this series are strong and realistic. Sammy’s mother gets on my nerves a little bit but in ways reminds me of my own mother in certain ways. I was surprised that the relationship between Sammy and Liam didn’t progress at all, while Heidi and Officer Tim’s relationship is progressing nicely. Ellie is taking advantage of her parents being in town to get a little bit of “me time” while they babysit their grandson Tyler. Even if that “me time” means manning the store so Sammy can investigate. When Ellie can’t step in employee/crafter/friend Deborah takes over and keeps the shop running. Of course, Sammy’s lovable golden retriever returns. That dog just steals my heart. Like my dogs, Bara is usually by Sammy’s side or very close by.

I really appreciate the way Ms. Quinn has laid out this mystery. She gives her protagonist a gift of “seeking and finding the truth” and gives us a detective that is man enough to know her information is important. He does his best to rein her in and keep her safe at the same time but Sammy is pretty headstrong. She may have her S.H.E. team to help, but she and Liam make a good team too.

The plot is full of twists, and I loved the way the author crocheted everything together but I did figure this one out before Sammy. Even with that, I was entertained reading and following along as all the clues fell into place right up to the exciting ending. Holding back saying more but Sammy rocked!

Fun characters, a great theme, not 1 but 2 mysteries all set in my neck of the woods. Books like this one are what first pulled me into the cozy mystery genre. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

I enjoyed the first book in this series, A CRAFTER KNITS A CLUE, so much that I couldn’t wait to get A CRAFTER HOOKS A KILLER in my hands. It was well worth the wait!

Setting aside a day to read this book was one of my better ideas. Once I started, I didn’t want to put it down. I was immediately transported to Heartsford, Wisconsin and back with the characters I enjoyed so much from book one.

I was also drawn into another wonderfully plotted mystery. I suppose I should say two mysteries since author Holly Quinn expertly weaved together a present day murder with one from protagonist Sammy Kane’s not so distant past. With more twists and turns than my current crochet project, I really had no idea how it was all going to come together. When the link between the two case and all of the motives behind the murders came to light, I was really taken by surprise.

Author Holly Quinn is two for two in the win column with me. Come on book three!

Oh, did I mention a mouthwatering recipe, and a crochet blanket project are included?

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!

I always love a good cozy, and this one has all the makings of a great series. A strong heroine, perfect love interest, a dog, small town vibes and a network of friends to help out. I will say that Samantha does come across TOO strongly at times; I almost couldn't read a scene where she lied her way into a house for evidence. Somehow it just made me too uncomfortable!

I really liked that this was a mystery within a mystery. There were two crimes, but the connections weren't clear until right at the end. It's all wound together rather well, and I'm sure other cozy mystery lovers will enjoy it!

I haven't read the first book in this series, but you don't really need to. This one stands alone like all great cozies. It was a fun book with a satisfying conclusion; four stars.

Sammy Kane is preparing to meet Jane Johnson, a noted crochet expert who has come to Heartsford, Wisconsin to be the featured artist at the Community annual festival in the second book in this series. Upon arrival, Jane informs her that her best friend Kate accident was not an accident. They agreed to meet shortly. Upon Sammy arrival, she finds Jane murder. Sammy along with her sister and cousin agree to put S. H. E. in action to find out what happened. When Sammy learned about the tractor accident, she is upset and determined to locate an answer. The romance with Detective Liam Nash continue and he is trying to convince Sammy her impulsive active is causing her harm and tainting the case against the prep. Will he succeed? The ending is surprising.
I highly recommend this book and series for those who like a light relaxing reading and various crafts.I
A recipe for Lasagna and directions for a crochet ripple lap blanket are included.

A Crafter Hooks a Killer is the second book in Holly Quinn’s A Handcrafted Mystery series. The likable characters are well developed in this well-crafted cozy whodunit. The author provides lots of red herrings, and twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. Other than some adult language, this fast-paced mystery is a clean read.

Samantha “Sammy” Kane moved back to her hometown, Heartsford, Wisconsin, and took over her best friend, Kate Allen’s, craft store instead of allowing it to close after Kate’s untimely death. Community Craft is a store that stocks handmade goods made by locals, where artists give lessons, and local craft groups meet. She has a golden retriever named Bara who provides her with companionship and comfort. Sammy’s sister, Ellie, and her husband, Randy, have a young son named Tyler; their parents have moved to Arizona; Sammy’s cousin who’s more like a sister or close friend, Heidi, a nurse at the local hospital, is dating Officer Tim Maxwell, who works for the Heartsford Police Department. While in grade school, the girls created S.H.E. (Sammy-Heidi-Ellie), their childhood “detective agency.”

Community Craft is preparing to host a book signing for Jane Johnson’s previous bestseller. Jane wants to interview Sammy for an upcoming book and discuss some sensitive information her research uncovered about Kate that she says could change everything. Sammy suggests they meet at the reflection bench by the river’s dam where a waterfall cascades so they’ll have privacy. After stopping at Liquid Joy for two iced coffees, Sammy arrives at the bench only to discover the bestselling author clutching her latest book but not breathing. Sammy is determined to find out what Jane had discovered about Kate and decides to search her room at the Pine Haven Bed and Breakfast before the authorities and reporters arrived. Before she can figure out how to enter the locked room, Detective Liam Nash and Officer Tim Maxwell arrive. When Sammy tells Liam that Jane had information about Kate, he reluctantly agrees to allow her to consult on the investigation if she agrees to contain her impulsiveness, follow his rules, and only investigate what and when he tells her she can. Even though she’s glad he’s letting her consult, she still intends to involve the S.H.E. team. As clues are uncovered, Sammie wonders if it was possible that the two deaths were linked.

A Crafter Hooks a Killer can be read as a standalone if you have not read A Crafter Knits a Clue. Samantha “Sammy” Kane is happy running Community Craft which fosters community spirit and encouraging artists. She is happy to be back in her hometown with Heidi and Ellie. Her budding romance with Detective Liam Nash, though, has stalled out since he has not contacted her since the case was closed. Jane Johnson, the Queen of Crafts, is coming to Community Craft for a book signing which is quite a coup for their small town. But then Jane ends up murdered after telling Sammy she had sensitive information to share regarding Kate Allen’s death. Kate was Sammy’s best friend and she realizes she does not know the details of how she died. I like how the author tied the two whodunits together. Sammy, Heidi and Ellie (the S.H.E. detective team) are quick to assemble so they can unravel this knotty mystery. Despite being told by multiple people to leave the case to the police, Sammy questions various people while Heidi wheedles information out of her police officer boyfriend (poor Tim). There is no absence of case details as the ladies’ work into the two crimes. I did find the pace in A Crafter Hooks a Killer to be on the slow side which made it hard for me to get into this cozy mystery along with the repetition of case details and endless speculation. I thought it was a breeze to pinpoint the guilty party with the limited suspects and obvious clues. I was not a fan of Ellie or the girls’ mother. They were both critical of Sammy, obsessed with cleanliness and basic worrywarts. All the various backbiting, boyfriend problems, and nitpicking got on my nerves. While it may be realistic, I would have preferred a little harmony. I liked when Sammy said that she had “a gift for seeking and finding the truth”. Friendship, family, and food are not lacking in A Crafter Hooks a Killer. Holly Quinn’s food descriptions will have your mouth watering. I enjoyed reading about the beautiful painted glasses and crocheted blankets. There are instructions for a lap blanket at the end of the book. A Crafter Hooks a Killer has three curious ladies, two complex crimes, one disgruntled detective and a delightful doggie.

I honestly couldn't put this down--it kept my interest all the way through. There were a lot of good twists and red herrings. Just when I thought I knew who did it, I'd suspect someone else. Then the ultimate twist came at the end. If anyone read the first book, they might remember that Sammy's good friend Kate had started the craft shop, and at the end, her ex-boyfriend had stated that Kate's death wasn't an accident. Of course, when Sammy heard that the visiting author wanted to tell her something about Kate, she was very interested in finding out what it was. Only she was too late when she found the woman dead. Sammy and Liam were at their irritating-each-other best in this book. I really hope they can finally come to agreement sometime, lol. It's a little nerve-wracking to have them constantly at each other, kind of hot and cold if that makes sense. I'm definitely interested in reading the next book now!

I liked this book a lot - there were a lot of unexpected events in this book.

Sammy is still living in Wisconsin after she returned home to run the craft store started by her best friend, Kate. Kate has been dead for a while now, but Sammy is still trying to heal. Then it turns out that her death may not have been an accident - now Sammy can't let it go until she knows the truth. Is knowing the truth always the best, or is it better to let certain secrets remain buried.

4.5 stars.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Great Escapes Book Tours. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Who would want to kill the Queen of Crafts?
A Crafter Hooks a Killer by Holly Quinn is a marvelous mystery set in a small Wisconsin community filled with crafters, farmers, and a killer. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story; it is fresh and welcoming.
Samantha Kane
Sam, as her friends call her is our sleuth and the owner of Community Craft. Sam doesn’t have much time for crafting, but she does run a successful craft shop. She is also a curious amateur sleuth, much to the dislike of the local detective Liam Nash.

I like that Sam is honoring her best friend Kate by running Kate’s store and keeping the heart of the community alive. Sam has lots of great qualities, like a great head for business, her love of her town and it's society, the relationships that she keeps with her family, friends, and neighbors. She also isn’t the girl who is always worrying about her looks. I liked Sam and wouldn’t change her at all.
Things to look for (and that I liked)

The Kanes coming back to visit from Arizona, I enjoyed their bickering with each other.
Ellie’s common sense and honest attitude about marriage were enlightening (not that I am married or have been).
Heidi, with her good looks, isn’t always filled with confidence. I also liked the way she doesn’t want to marry Tim if he isn’t the right one. How do you know?
Marilyn from the Sweet Tooth Bakery is such a gossip; I loved it.
Deborah, the lady who paints wine glasses and such is a great friend to Sam.
The budding relationship between Liam and Sam…I can’t wait to see them together.
The way the mystery of the Craft Queen and Kate Allen death morph into one mystery.
I love the way that Sam gets people to tell her things and makes it seem like they volunteered it.
Then we have the S.H.E. detective agency. Sam, Heidi, and Ellie are more like the Scooby gang, but I loved their get-togethers. Those three must have been a handful growing up.

A Crafter Hooks A Killer CR5 Stars for A Crafter Hooks a Killer by Holly Quinn
My rating for A Crafter Hooks a Killer by Holly Quinn is five stars. The mystery, setting, characters, and their interactions were perfectly crafted into this outstanding story, which I adore. I can’t wait for the next one to come out. Oh, and there is a recipe for lasagna along with a crochet pattern for a lap blanket at the end of the book.

I highly recommend this book to all Cozy readers.

A Crafter Hooks a Killer by Holly Quinn. 2.5 stars

This is my first time reading a book by Holly Quinn. The description was that this series was for lovers of Maggie Sefton and Betty Hechtman. I've read books by both authors and while there is a similarity because crafts is a common thread I didn't find this book a fun read.. I had to force myself to finish this. I didn't like like Sammy or her potential love interest Detective Liam Nash. This was not my cup of tea.

Thank you Netgalley and Crooked Lane for this ARC.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

A fantastic new addition to this artsy crafty cozy mystery series! We follow Sammy as she runs Community Craft with the help of some friends and family. She is settled in now and excited because she is about to be interviewed by a semi famous person. One problem: she finds her dead before the interview can even happen. With lots of questions Sammy activates S.H.E. With her friends to catch the killer. Wonderfully written with great chats gets as well as a mystery to keep you guessing. Perfect for fans of cozies. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

A great book given to me from Net Galley for an honest review. I found the book to be a winner. I am giving it 5 Stars to start out.

The book starts out with Sammy getting her Craft Store ready for a meet and greet with a very famous Craft Book Author, Named Jane Johnson. Sammy's craft store is named Community Crafts. Jane arrives in town early to do some research for her next best selling books all about The crafters in the small town of Heartsford, Wisconsin.

Jane tells Sammy that she has some information about Sammy's Best Friend who owned the Community Craft store before Sammy took it over after the death of Kate Allen. Jane said she had information that would tell the police that Kate's death was not an accident.

Jane wanted to talk to Sammy privately and get some more information on the Store and on Kate's death. So Sammy tells her to take a walk on the River Walk and find a place to be private.. Sammy went to the coffee shop and got them two cups of Coffee and was on the way to find Jane on a bench by the river.

When Sammy got there she found Jane dead! Which starts the story and keeps your attention until the end of the book.

I would recommend the book to anyone who is looking for a good clean cozy mystery.

Samantha “Sammy” Kane is settling back into life in her hometown of Heartsford. She is very excited that her store, Community Craft, is doing well. She is also very excited that best selling author, Jane Johnson is coming to Heartsford for a book signing and to interview Sammy for her next book. When Jane arrives it doesn’t take long for word to get out and people start coming to the store to see the author. Johnson is really comfortable with crowds and asks Sammy if they can meet somewhere quiet to talk, as Johnson has something sensitive to share with Sammy. They agree to meet at a bench down by the river. Before heading for the bench, Sammy stops by Liquid Joy for a couple of iced coffees and a quick chat with the owner, Douglas. As Sammy is approaching the bench and seeing Jane who appears to be reading a book, a chill goes down Sammy’s spine. A pencil was used to dig the words THE END is the pages of her latest book. After calling for the police, Detective Nash is one of the first to arrive at the scene. Sammy and Nash had worked on a previous murder. Sammy had hopes that there might be something starting in the romance department, but she hasn’t seen him in some time. Based on that Nash tells Sammy to let the police handle the investigation...once again.

Sammy heads to the B&B where Johnson was staying, hoping that she might be able to look in her room for something that would tell Sammy what information she wanted to share. As she is about to go into the room, Nash arrives to also search the room. Sammy is able to convince Nash to let her help. Sammy soon finds that what Johnson had to share was information on the death of her friend, Kate Allen, who had left The Community Store to her. Even being told numerous times to stay away from any investigating, she talks the childhood group S.H.E. to help with the investigation. S.H.E. stands for Sammy, her cousin Heidi and her sister Ellie.

The story is well-written and plotted with interesting and believable characters. The sisters and Heidi have their times when they might get upset with each other but that’s part of being family. Sammy and Nash continue to dance around being more than just be acquainted.

A delicious recipe is also included as well as a crochet pattern.

I will be watching for the next book in this enjoyable series.

Being a crafter I love a mystery that has a crafty theme, "A Crafter Hooks a Killer" is the second book in the A Handcrafted Mystery series by Holly Quinn. I haven't read the first book in this series, but that didn't cause a problem as this can be read as a stand-alone.

I like the Protagonist Samantha “Sammy” Kane and her besties Heidi and Ellie who complete the S.H.E. (Sammy-Heidi-Ellie) “detective agency” from their childhood. The characters are well developed and very likeable, and who doesn't love a golden retriever "Bara".

There are plenty of red herrings, twists, turns to keep me wanting to find out what will happen next. I can't wait for the third installment in this series, I highly recommend this to cozy lovers.

Thanks to the author and netgalley for the advanced readers review copy.

It took me a lot longer to read this book then is norm, I was easily distracted from the story plot. Personally, I felt like it was a slow burner, the suspense of who did it was a little lack lustred and a little disjointed.

That being said, I did enjoy reading about the S.H.E investigation team and Sammy’s need to run in head first and not think about the consequences. The development of the love/hate relationship between Sammy and Detective Nash was also extremely entertaining.

I was all set to love this book. A cozy mystery centered around a craft shop in a small town. However I just could not get into it. The plot was compelling enough. A famous author of craft books drops a tantalizer hint about a past death in town, then winds up murdered before sharing the details. However, the story is confusing and hard to follow. The plot meanders and there are just too many words. Every adjective and metaphor is jammed into this story. Rather than setting the scene it becomes a distraction. It’s a bummer, since the premise was so promising.

Cozy lovers and crafters of all kinds will love this new offering from Holly Quinn. The second book in the Handcrafted Mystery series. It was a well done mix of crafting and mystery. Sammy Kane steps once again into a mystery as she has discovered the dead body of of a famous crochet book author, Jane Johnson, who was coming to her shop to do a book signing of her new crafty title. Sammy owns her best friend, Kate’s, business Community Craft. She has been keeping it going since the death of her best friend which took place before the start of this book.

It was interesting to try and follow the clues as they were dropped throughout the book. A hair clip from the 80’s only she and her best friend had created turns up in the position of the author and becomes an fascinating catalyst to spur Sammy into trying to find out what had really happened to the author and was her best friend’s death really accidental and connected?

I hadn’t read the first book in the series and that didn’t keep me from enjoying the book or knowing the backstory of characters. The author did a wonderful job of reintroducing the characters to us as she went along so no one would be left behind while trying to navigate the story.

The story was alluring and makes you want to keep reading to discover the truth Sammy is searching for. I enjoyed the characters that came back from the past and reintroduced them into Sammy’s life. And watching the relationship between her and the detective Liam Nash was humorous and sweet.

It was a good mix of everything in this book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. Can’t wait to pick up book one and see how Sammy handled the first dead body she managed to trip over. :)

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

A Crafter Hooks Killer is the second installment in the A Handcrafted Mystery series set in Heartsford, Wisconsin and featuring craft store owner Samantha "Sammy" Kane. Having settled into running Community Craft, the shop she took over when her best friend Kate Allen was killed, Sammy is looking forward to hosting a book signing for well known craft book author Jane Johnson. With crafters from all over the county expected to attend, Sammy and her employee Deborah are hurrying to get the shop in shape.

The early and unexpected arrival of the author leaves Sammy star struck and speechless. When she realizes that the paparazzi and other nosy neighbors are descending upon the shop, she suggests that Jane slip out the back for a quiet walk along the river. As she departs the author whispers for Sammy to meet her as soon as possible because she has something important to tell her about Kate. Shocked that Jane would know anything about Kate or Kate's death, Sammy sneaks away to meet her and sadly stumbles across the murdered woman reclining on a bench.

Determined to not only uncover who murdered the famous author but what she was going to tell her about Kate's death, Sammy teams up with her cousin Heidi and sister Ellie, the SHE's (as the girls call their amateur detective agency) against the advice of Detective Liam Nash.

A fast paced plot that makes for an easy afternoon read. A likable cast of characters and great tips for crafting ideas. A resolution into what happened to Kate and a touch of romance have readers looking forward to the next addition to the series.

I received an advanced copy of A Crafter Hooks a Killer from NetGalley via Crooked Lane Books. While not required to write a review I am more than happy to offer my honest opinion.

As Samantha, “Sammy” Kane tries to figure out the murder of a well-loved author within the craft world, she is also caught up with the death of her best friend, Kate. Was Kate’s death a tragic accident? Or, was her death murder? The author, was in town for a book signing, and alluded to Sammy, she had information on Kate’s death. Before the author could share, she was murdered!

Sammy, her sister Ellie, and cousin Heide, are part of a threesome known as the SHEs. The group began during their childhood and they created an “investigative” club. (This brought back fond memories of Nancy Drew, and her friends). Although, Sammy can be one the impulsive side, her sister and cousin try to keep her safe and inline, not to mention the assistance a good-looking detective! Unfortunately, her inquisitive mind puts her in danger!

With several twists and turns, along with multiple suspects, the question is: To what length will Sammy go to catch a killer, before the killer catches her!

Although, I did not read the first book in this series, I wasn’t lost. The background story is weaved throughout the book. This definitely helped me get a feeling for the characters. This was an enjoyable read and will appeal to those the who enjoy cozy mystery genre. Likeable characters, and a well thought plot have me waiting for book three! I requested this Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book through NetGalley and Crooked Lane books. I was happy to leave a review of my thoughts.

Sammy Kane is settling into her new life in her hometown of Heartsford, Wisconsin. She returned to run her late friend Kate Allen’s craft shop, Community Craft, and has scheduled a book signing with bestselling crochet author Jane Johnson. Sammy’s excitement for the event is quickly extinguished when she finds Jane strangled to death on the riverwalk.

The author had news to share with Sammy which she claimed would “change everything.” Sammy is left to piece together clues as she tries to uncover what Jane was going to share with her and seems to be directly related to the death of Kate. Sammy is joined by her sister and cousin as the trio works to find, not only that information, but the identity of Jane’s killer.

This is the second book in the “A Handcrafted Mystery” series by Holly Quinn. I loved the first book and this book was just as good. The setting is what drew me into the series to begin with and the author continues to weave Heartsford, WI into an idyllic village filled with interesting characters. The plot in this book moved steadily and I didn’t want to stop listening (audio book from the library). I will say, the reader of this audio book was not one of my favorites. I sometimes struggled with the shrill voice she used to represent one of the characters and the tone she used when speaking as Sammy’s mom. The next book in this series releases next week (2-11-20) and I’m looking forward to reading it.

Wow Holly Quinn has written another humdinger of a story with a cold case and a new case colliding and leaving you breathless!

Sammy and the Community Craft shop are looking forward to welcoming Jane Johnson aka The Queen of Crafts to a book signing, she arrives a few days early and wishes to speak with Sammy in private, by the time Sammy has got some coffee and arrived at the meeting place she finds the Queen is dead! The only thing Sammy knows is that Jane Johnson said there was something wrong with the accident that killed Sammy's best friend, now Sammy and the S.H.E team (Sammy, her cousin Heidi and Sammy's sister Ellie) start digging into the old case and the new.

Add in distractions in the forms of Ellie and Sammy's parents arriving on the scene and an old crush of Sammy's being back in town (and looking as good as ever, if not better!), Heidi distracted by her relationship with Officer Tim, Ellie trying to juggle motherhood and sleuthing, oh and Detective Nash semi letting Sammy into the investigation and you have a very complex situation without the murder!

Spunky (one has to use the word) Sammy Kane runs the crafts cooperative her best friend started before her untimely death. She's expecting a noted crafter to come there for a book signing, but instead finds the crafter's dead body. Sammy can't leave the investigation to the new police detective in town, much as she's attracted to him, because the crafter hinted that she knew something about Sammy's friend's death before she went to her own. Sammy is assisted by her homemaker-sister Ellie and their cousin Heidi--the three use their initials to form "SHE," an investigation team. There's a recipe and a crochet pattern, but remarkably little crafting goes on in this, the second in a series. I haven't decided if I'll read the first.

The Community Crafter Shop in Hearts ford WI is hosting the famous crafting author,Jane Johnson for a book signing. When the author is found dead after arriving in town S.H.E. (Sammy, Heidi and Ellie \amateur sleuths) goes to work to solve the murder. Filled with mystery, clues and a tad bit of romance makes this a perfect palate cleanser novel.

Filled with small town flare A Crafter Hooks A Killer ensconced a nice cozy mystery.

I received this book via Netgalley in return for an honest review. I really enjoyed this cozy mystery featuring Sammie, Ellie and Heidi, the S.H.E. investigating team. I also loved Liam Nash, the handsome detective who seems to have a thing for Sammie. I kind of knew who the killer probably was, but was happy when it came as a shock to Sammie and Liam. Fun cozy mystery.

A Crafter Hooks a Killer takes us back to Heartsford, Wisconsin for another adventure with Sammy and friends. I really enjoyed the first book in this series and have been looking forward to another installment. I wasn’t disappointed. The characters are just as much fun as I remembered and the story itself is even better.

As if one mystery to figure out wasn’t enough, A Crafter Hooks a Killer presents us with two well-intertwined murders. Finding out if or how they are related was a lot of fun and kept me guessing. This one was a quick read for me – once I got started it was very hard to put down!

A Crafter Hooks a Killer is the 2nd book in the Handcrafted Mystery series but can be read as a standalone if you haven’t read book one, A Crafter Knits a Clue. (Read my review here )

Book 2 in the series.

First off, the description on Goodreads was so hokey with bad crafting puns I almost gave the book a miss. And then the S.H.E. thing that annoyed me so much in the first book was back, and the grown women were still acting like children. It still feels like Liam and Sam are mismatched.

All in all the pace felt slow, and I finally gave it up and left it as a DNF. This series and I are just not a good fit.

*I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book given to me by the publisher, via NetGalley.*

Samantha Kane owns the craft shop, Community Craft. She bought it after the previous owner, her friend Kate, died in an accident. She's doing well and helping the community by displaying their items for sale. She's also excited to be having a famous author of craft books come to her shop to sign copies of her newest book. Jane Johnson is devoting a chapter in her book to Sammy's store, and she's pleased that the author is going to interview her. But she's surprised, not unpleasantly so, when Jane shows up early and unannounced. Jane looks around the store until she's noticed by others in the town and is soon feeling cornered.

Sammy shows her the back way out, but before she leaves she tells Sammy that she has information on Kate, and wants to talk to her. Sammy, stunned, tells her she will meet Jane down by the river. When Sammy arrives, she finds a book on Jane's lap, with a chilling message "THE END" scratched in pencil; and a very dead Jane. After calling the police, she begins to wonder who killed the woman and why.

When Detective Liam Nash arrives, he naturally tells her to stay out of the investigation. But Sammy has a personal reason for wanting to be involved - Kate. She wants to know what Jane wanted to tell her, and if the two deaths might be related. So she decides to get together with her sister Ellie and cousin Heidi and between the three of them - the S.H.E. team - she's hoping she'll be able to find the truth before a killer finds her...

This is the second book in the series and I'm glad I had the opportunity to visit with Sammy and her family and friends. This time out, she's found her place in Heartsford, and is looking forward to hosting a famous author. But unfortunately things don't go as planned and she's left with more questions than the ones Jane was going to ask her.

She's also got other things which are hindering her - her parents are in town for a week and want to spend time with her, and an old crush named Bradley has come back to visit his mother and he, too, wants to spend time with her. So now she's trying to keep her mother from finding out what she's doing (the woman would not be pleased) and trying to pump Bradley for information on Kate's death, since he was living in Heartsford while she was elsewhere.

But along with this she has to deal with Detective Nash. He's not pleased that she's involving herself, telling her she's too impatient and too impulsive. Stung with the truth, Sammy still goes on with her investigation and hopes to find out the truth about Kate. If she unmasks a killer in the process, so be it.

I truly enjoyed reading this book. Ms. Quinn has written characters that have a life of their own. Sammy has a fierce loyalty to her family and friends, and when she does something she knows she shouldn't, she has an immediate sense of remorse (although it doesn't stop her from doing something else next time). Detective Nash is closed off and stoic, but in this book we are given a bit more insight as to why, and it might be a break in whether these two can ever find the grounds to venture toward a future relationship.

The plot is taut and woven through with a few red herrings and plenty of clues; it was intriguing and written well. Watching Sammy sift through the information she received and try to puzzle the pieces together was a pleasure indeed, as I also was doing the same.

When the ending came and the murderer was revealed, while it wasn't a surprise to me, it was done well and the reasons why were plausible; everything meshed together nicely and it was an enjoyable venture into Heartsford and its people. I look forward to the next in the series. Highly recommended.
