Ben Ditmars was first published in his college publications the Cornfield Review and KAPOW and has since been featured in several online literary journals. He is the author of six poetry books including Night Poems, Haiku in the Night, Inhale the Night, Sleeping with Earth, Number Poetry and Splinters with Susie Clevenger. He lives in Ohio with his wife, De’Garrica, and dachshund, Elsa.
Ben Ditmars never ceases to amaze me with his incredible talent. I don't really understand much about poetry, but I do understand about things that are beautiful and blow me away. This collection of haikus is one of them. The beauty of the words is impressive, and you will replay those words in your head once and once again, just because you cannot get rid of them so easily. They will stick with you and make you feel deeply the feelings these tiny poems so successfully convey. I have no words to do it justice. I can just say that the author did it again, and I cannot wait to read more from him.
Having got a chance to read this beautiful piece of work by Ben Ditmars, I feel lucky. Ben is the most creative person I have ever met, and he delivers...big! Haiku in the Night is a combination of heart and gut punches that roll from start to finish. I have my copy...get your own!
Ben never ceases to amaze me. I've read his poetry and he writes with heart and soul. In Haiku in the night he does this with few words, quick but powerful. Don't miss this Haiku poetry.
Darkness is a theme -- a light filtering into the slumbering nighttime brought many moments of wonder. Every haiku, whether restricted by line and syllable, or not, breathes life into the imagery, scene, feeling. Writing equals emotion -- poetry, prose, plays, novels, story, must hit an emotional center. To do so in quick haiku clips is extraordinary.
In Ben's book of haiku each one is a pearl of thought that leaves the reader to their own interpretation of its meaning. His declarations aren't dressed in pretty words but stark honesty. For those of us who know well the ticking night hours Ben has poignantly captured our thoughts.
I say every time that I review poetry, that it is subjective, but this author always brings tears to my eyes with the heartfelt honesty of his words. Haiku in the Night is another win.
I love the complex simplicity of haiku. Seriously. There were quite a few of these poems that I really enjoyed. Another quick read but I recommend them.
“Haiku in the Night” by Ben Ditmars is a collection of free form haiku. The title is a play on Sinatra's “Strangers in the Night”... A haiku in its self. This thin book on whose each page is a separate Haiku, is a really remarkable selection. I was unsure as to what I was getting into when I started it, having fears of bad limericks, but Mr. Ditmars delivers an astounding collection of poetry.
From the opening:
Stroll with me in green Lively, lost, together I am yours
Each Haiku after that is ready to stand on its own. I could't help but to share some with a close friend and the reaction is the same. These are amazing. I am really hesitant to give a five star rating to a to a collection of poems from a young poet, but these stand the test and I would happily intermix these haiku with Byron or Blake. Now I need to find a copy of Night Poems.
I've always been fascinated by haiku. It's both ambient and telling, both graphically and technically meaningful. Learning to appreciate it and kind of liked this one
Date night with my words Drinking vintage sentences I seduce myself.
