Sins of the Heart #1

Absinthe of the Heart

Two households, unlike in dignity, in the City of Angels is where we lay our scene... London Sinclair was the boy my mother warned me about for as long as I can remember. His name alone has brought my family nothing but shame and suffering, so it’s no surprise we’ve been sworn enemies since the first moment we met. With his bedroom eyes and cocky smile, he has all the girls under his spell. I have one more year of school left, and then I’m home free because I’m guarding a secret, one I’m ashamed to keep. The boy who is completely off-limits is the one who drives me, Holland Brooks, wild. I want London, and I think…he wants me, too. Some may compare it to a Shakespearian tragedy, as our surnames have fated our future, but when a single night changes my life forever, I can’t leave the City of Angels fast enough. Ten years later, I have atoned for my sins and return to Los Angeles a changed woman. I’ve come home to get married. But the moment London walks back into my life, one thing is clear. Ten years can’t undo that night—that single, sinful night when I gave into temptation—because I want to do it again.

This book has all the perfect ingredients for contemporary romance. I found the characters to be very likable, not only London and Holland, but their best friends and family as well. I loved the way the romance developed in this story. Their slow transition from hostility to a deeper understanding and eventually, to love was beautifully played out. This love story will warm your heart, and make you long for the days of first loves, when you could look into someone's eyes and although they have flaws you see them as simply perfect. The climax of this book will have your heart in your throat, and tears welling up in your eyes. Please put this on the list to consider. You won't come out of this book without having your heart touched.

In short:
Hero 4/5 | Heroine 4/5 | Plot (Point, Originality) 4/5 | Writing Style 4/5 | Steam 3/5 | Romance 4/5 | Angst-Suspense 3/5 | Darkness 0/5 | Humor 1/5 | Secondary Characters 4/5 | Drama-Conflict 4/5 | Mystery 3/5 | Twists 4/5 | Pacing Steady | Action 3/5

Absinthe of the Heart (Sins of Yesterday #1) by Monica James
5 stars!!!!

“London Sinclair didn’t just break my heart; he fucking set it on fire and threw the ashes to the wind. I loved him, and in return, he danced on my grave.”

OMG, Monica James, what have you done? This author never fails to drag my heart and my emotions through the wringer. This author never fails to knock me on my ass either. I went into this book blind, my chin is on the floor, I have read the last chapter about ten times just to make sure I am on the right page. THIS AUTHOR JUST KILLED ME.

“You’re the cause of my chaos, but when I’m with you…nothing has felt more real.”

This book is AMAZING, for those that love a love/hate book, this book is PERFECT and one of the best I have ever read. This book will drive you nuts, but in the best way possible, HOLY ANGST fest. That fine line between love and hate was depicted perfectly, that constant spat of animosity yet you could feel the undercurrent of sizzling chemistry behind it. Electrical storms were present in every scene these two were in together. I felt the sly looks of appreciation, shrouded in the veils of hate. OMG, I bloody LOVED IT. Now I need the next one, like STAT, like YESTERDAY. OMG!! My mind is running a mile a minute, my heart frantically beating like it’s all out of whack, DAMN, I live for books that have this effect on me. GIMMEE book TWO NOW!!!

“My whole life, my mom told me you were off-limits, that I could have any girl but you…But I never wanted any of them. All I ever wanted…was you.”

London (Sin as he likes to be called) and Holland are arch nemeses, their hatred of each other drummed into them from birth. Their parents sworn enemies. Never the twain shall meet. They fight one and other, they fight their feelings for one and other, but there is a fine line between love and hate and that line is about to get blurry. But what happens when the only person you have ever loved is the one person you cannot have, the one person you were born to hate and what happens when you realise that your first love is the one that you will never, ever forget? Absinthe of the Heart is what happens.

“I don’t know what’s worse – Sin caring, or Sin not caring at all.”

This book was simply delicious, from their parents back story, to their last year in high school and then now in the present as adults. Monica James delivered the best parts of everything and I am so glad I went into this one blind. I didn’t have a scooby as to what to expect, but Monica James just sucked me in, swirled me around her tornado of words and then spat me out at the end… a little dishevelled but full of admiration for one unputdownable story. From London’s affluent family to Holland’s that are despised now they have fallen from grace. The them and us mentality. But Holland is fierce, now a top lawyer and a woman that can fight for herself and her family.

“Oh, and by the way…I don’t think I’m special…I know I am. I’m Holland Brooks-Ferris…and I’m fucking fabulous.”

The second book in this duet is scheduled for September and let me just say that this cannot come quick enough. That book will be one of my most anticipated reads and I am itching to find out where Monica James takes this modern-day Romeo and Juliet. While I hope that their ending isn’t as dismal and they have the ability to turn lore on its head, I know that Monica James is going to decimate us before we get our happy ever after. With many people needing a good dose of karma, I cannot wait for revenge to be dealt. The only people hurt in this tragedy are London and Holland, but with a love that strong, surely that will be enough, family be damned?

“…My only love sprung from my only hate.”

I cannot recommend this book enough. READ IT!! One of my favourite Monica James books EVER.

well, hawt damn...

I actually didn't have in my plans to read this book at this moment and I can't really explain how or why I have decided to do so BUT I did and I have absolutely NO regrets except for NOT READING IT SOONER...

Now, I am not really a huge fan of emotional triangles, quadrouples or whatever the combo in question it is (well, unless it's a sex thing, obviously LOL) but the complicated and complex situations of the hearts simply make me angsty to the point I want to scream and hit smth (usually the first person near me LOL, don't judge!), but all considering I tend to avoid the hype of this kind of drama...LOL, it reminds me too much of the real life situation, and the whole point for me, is to escape..bahahha

BUT now, I am NOT only caught, I'm hooked, lined and sunk...and stuck *sigh*

This being my first read from Monica James , I can only say, that I will read the second part in this duet, as I am left with itchy questions and in need of a closure...

so, this story of a modern Romeo & Juliet, couldn't have been more complicated and messy, even if I played out my most imaginative horrifying scenarios LOL, the angst is palpable to the painful stage, the passion is so vivid, the chemistry and the itching pull between the characters is unavoidable and undeniable, no matter how "doomed" they are, because of the past they share and the last names they carry...

it's a burden and a curse and yet it's their fate and destiny, so much it hurts them in the flesh and scars them layers deep...the forever "enemies" turned cursed lovers and pawns to the secrets and lies and miscommunication and betrayal and confusion and what the fuck not...

it's complicated
it's messy
it's vividly angsty
it's almost painfully tragic
yet so completely overwhelming and captivating

and I just hope, London and Holland will find their way back to each other...somehow, some way...

I love Romeo and Juliet. I've read the book, I've seen all the versions - as far as I know - of movies. So when I read this synopsis, the fact of having a forbidden vibe already caught my attention. The book takes the basis of Shakespeare's story by placing two families who can not stand each other. But make no mistake. The course of the story has much more drama and surprises. Monica James loves to make our heart race, huh? And what a roller coaster that was!!! There's a lot going on and looks like is not over yet.

When I started to read, I found it strange that I didn't know the names of the characters because in the synopsis it was different. I thought maybe the author has changed? Until I reach the part where everything made sense. I loved that it didn't just mention what had happened. But it told how everything happened in the past to let us know the reason for the hatred between the families. A mistake affecting the lives not only of the people involved, but of their children as well. I loved that strategy. I was super excited to read.

In ABSINTHE OF THE HEART, the line between love and hate is pretty thin. The family of London and Holland have a history and they both carry this grudge with them. But is that right? This care disguised as a motive, the desire disguised as hatred, is what sets this story on fire. They don't even have to touch the other to get us to feel the fire, I mean, tension between them.

From the first page to the last. I couldn't put it down. My intention was to read slowly, very slowly. But you tell me how do you do that with a book by this author? I certainly can't!!

Monica James's books are like the ones I love: that makes you tense, stuck in the story, full of drama and a love you feel overflowing the pages. I love it very much. I loved ABSINTHE OF THE HEART a lot. I recommend it and I want book two SOON. Like today!. Now. Lol. Do not make me wait, Monica!!!!!! Aaaaaaah !!!!!!!

*I received an ARC of this book. Thank you!

Amo Romeu e Julieta.

Fiquei super empolgada.

Em ABSINTHE OF THE HEART a linha entre amor e ódio é bem fina.

Amei muito ABSINTHE OF THE HEART.  Recomendo e quero LOGO o livro 2. Muito! Tipo rápido. Agora. Rsrs. Não me faça esperar, Monica!!!!!!  Aaaaaaah!!!!!!!

*Recebi um ARC desse livro. Obrigada!

The story was way too predictable and full of cliches. I was really looking forward to reading this book, but in the end I was quite disappointed with the characters. I have read this for a thousand times and it felt so unoriginal. I really liked the author's other books, but this one was just boring.

Absinthe of the Heart is the first book in the Sins of the Heart series (or duet?) I am not sure...yet. Either way, Monica James has once again given us an epic story that I will never forget. If you follow my reviews then you might know that I don’t read many blurbs before I dive in. If I love the author’s work then I like to go in head first. Once again. I did that with this book and I loved that I did. I don’t want to spoil anything so I will try to make this short.

London and Holland were born to hate each other. They knew it the day they met in kindergarten. It was just how it was going to be. Their story started before they were even born. Over the years, London has been nothing but an asshole. An asshole with a cocky smirk that she both hated and loved. Along with her parents, he made her who she was. A strong, determined woman who would never back down. He called her a princess but she wasn’t a damsel in distress. She was a badass who loved to take him down a peg or two while also lusting for him. She hated how much she cared. She hated how he made her feel. Confused. Hot. Special. Used.

Ten years later and he still made her feel that way. Only now, they were grown up. She was home to get married. To move on. Only The City of Angels had other plans for her first. She is back where it all started and now it was time for answers. Answers to questions she didn’t even realize she had. Answers to past ones. Answers she needed to move on completely. Will they ruin her or give her clarity?

I absolutely loved this book! I was addicted from the very start until the very last word. I felt for all the characters in the story. More than others of course. London and Holland’s story is complex, beautiful, heartbreaking, sinful, fun, and everything in between. It gave me all the feels. I wanted to scream, cry, swoon, and laugh.

Overall...It’s a book I will never forget! The writing is phenomenal. The story is engaging. The characters are beautifully flawed. I really loved it all even when I wanted to slap someone.

P.S That ending...

Quotes:

“This is only the beginning.” Touché.
Unable to stop myself, I stand on tippy-toes and deadpan him. “Bring it.”

“You’re the cause of my chaos, but when I’m with you…nothing has felt more real.”

“Oh, and by the way…I don’t think I’m special…I know I am. I’m Holland Brooks-Ferris…and I’m fucking fabulous.”

Absinthe of the Heart (Sins of Yesterday # 1) by Monica James

OMG!!!! What the heck woman! This book is freaking delicious but now I am dying for book two. I actually went in blind because Monica James is one of my favorite authors and I love her stories and her writing style. Once again, she delivered a unique story filled with angst, drama, suspense, and a roller coaster romance. SO GOOD!!! It ended in a cliffy.

Right from the prologue, I was intrigued by the circumstances and the colorful past of London and Holland’s parents. Their lives were intertwined and not in a pleasant way. London has everything – wealthy, good looks and popularity while Holland lives a quiet life with her working class parents. She is desperate to earn a scholarship so she can get out of town. Growing up, Holland and London were nemeses. They hated each other’s guts because their parents hated each other. They both know any type of friendship or romance is forbidden and completely off limits. For the most part, Holland and London stayed away from each other and when their paths cross it’s all sharp tongue and hateful banters. But one fateful night changed Holland and London forever. Was it all a game of winning to London? Holland was devastated – she left town vowing to never look back.

Ten years later, Holland became a hot shot lawyer in NY. She brought her fiancé Lincoln back home to visit her family and get ready for the upcoming nuptial. What supposed to be three weeks of relaxation turns complicated when she ran into her old enemy London. Holland did not expect all her feelings for London to come rushing back and it is more than she could handle. Holland is torn and confused when she learns the truth about London and what really happened ten years ago. All the misunderstandings and lost time, can Holland finally have her happy ending with London, the only man she ever loved? OH NO! Not that easy guys!!! There is a HUGE TWIST at the ending that left me gasping for air. There are so many questions at the end of book one. Holland is being followed, but by whom? Her best-friend Belle is still in the picture and closer to London than Holland expected. Lincoln has a HUGE secret. Has he been lying all this years? We will find out in book two.

I really enjoy the premise of this book – Sort of love/hate, enemies to lowers romance but with a unique plot. The sexual tension and the chemistry is off the chart amazing. I like the brooding younger version of London but the grown-up self-assured London is deliciously HOT.
There is quite a bit of drama in the plot surrounding the two sets of parents as well as between Holland and London. History seems to repeat itself and I pray that Holland and London have a much different ending…

Absinthe of the heart is seriously addicting, a page turner for sure. Devoured in one sitting!!! Can’t wait for the finale!!!! COME ON WOMAN!!!!

I am in love with this book! It pulled all sorts of emotions out of me. That's when I knew I'm reading an Amazing book! This book starts with the introduction of Delores and Kayla and how their friendship started. They become best friend until high school where Bobby is the cause of their friendship ending. That's when life changed for everybody and grudges lasted generations.

Fast forward about 17 years and you get introduced to London, Lincoln, Belle and Holland. History repeats itself but this time it's a little bit more complicated.

Everything about this book reached 5 stars throughout for me. I devoured the book and the story just stuck with me. I just couldn't get enough of this story. I keep on having the urge for more and more. It was like an addiction.

I saw all the post and reviews on Goodreads and Facebook so I'm glad I waited for book 2 to be released before I start this duet because the ending just left you with your jaw on the floor. I think I was holding my breathe throughout the last chapter. I'm pretty sure I'm in for a roller coaster ride in book 2 with that ending.

“London Sinclair didn’t just break my heart; he fucking set it on fire and threw the ashes to the wind. I loved him, and in return, he danced on my grave.”

Oh Monica, you are going to kill me one day!

This modern take on Romeo and Juliet is amazing. The chemistry between London and Holland is off the charts. I could not put this book down and was hooked from the first page!

The flow of the book was great. I loved that we had a lot of detail into what happened between London and Holland's parents versus just getting little flashbacks here and there. It provided such a good start to the story and progressing through the years until we hit present day.

The love, the hate, the angst, the drama, the emotions. Its everything you could ask for in a story and more!

The suspense, the drama and the ending. I am still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor from that cliffhanger!

I can't wait for book 2!

London Sinclair will literally steal your heart after reading this story!

This book has it all.

The story starts off with childhood of both London & Holland and how their worlds have forever been entwined because of their parents.

Book starts off which such a delicious scandal that I was dying to know how it was going to turn out.

Holland and her parents are my people!  Loved how no matter what, love for family always comes first.

London's  parents had me wanting to snatch London away from them and never let go.

Author Monica James delivers a breath taking story of friends, enemies, romance, hate, love, and scrumptious twists that had me feel like I could not turn the pages fast enough!

Get ready for a ride that will go straight through your heart and make you fall in love with London & Holland.

I am sooo ready for Book2!

I had a massive book funk the week I tried to start reading this book. It took me several tries to get into and I know it's not the books fault. I'm so sad this epic book was affected by my funk and it ruined my reading experience.

“What was done could never be undone, and what they’d all done would never be forgotten…or forgiven, for generations to come.”

I have watched every version of Romeo & Juliet movies. I will read any book that has the same premise because I love Shakespeare and that is one of my favorite plays by him. I am also very particular when someone uses this theme in their story. It has to be done right and pay homage to Shakespeare and not insult him. This was done right in every way and I am so glad I read it.

“…My only love sprung from my only hate.”

London and Holland have a spark from the very beginning even though they are enemies. The love/hate line is thin here. The angst, drama, and suspense all make this story one I couldn't put down after I worked through my funk. I am so anxious to get my hands on the next book. Monica did a phenomenal job.

"I guess the saying rings true - Absence makes the heart grow fonder."

"I don't want to be a mistake"
I loved getting the back story of London and hollands families and the story as to why they were fighting in the start of the book.
"my only love sprung from my only hate"

Monica James is my new favorite author!

Ms James definitely has a way of making a reader connect. I was hooked as soon as i read the first couple of pages.

To get a little more descriptive about the story, Absinthe of the Heart was divided by years. It started back in 1977 with Holland and London’s parents’ it set forth an interesting tale. I liked that the past was put out there right at the beginning, and wasn’t some secret to unfold. After the prologue, the story switches to when Holland and London are in high school. It’s all about how they hate each other, but that attraction creeps up on them and then boils over. Then, we’re into the present. Everyone is pretty much the same, with the exception of Holland. She’s returning home to get married, but coming home means facing the past she left behind. Without giving to much away their are a lot of twists through out. It kept me engaged.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am now not so patiently waiting book 2.

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stars! This was an Enemies to lover/Second chance at Love/Forbidden all mixed up in one delicious package. I was addicted from the prologue, such a great hook. I loved romance reads where they are supposed to hate each other because their families have a bad history together but they somehow can’t resist each other, I love that! And of course they are forbidden to be with each other but we know how that goes, right?!

London and Holland was destined to want each other, it just couldn’t be helped. This was such a fascinating read I was on pins and needles with all the angst that was within. I love the great chemistry they had and it seemed genuine and reciprocated.

Well off to read book 2, I waited for the release before I started this one. Bravo author, this is an excellent read.

Having circled my Kindle so many times this week to try and find something that was "different" I came across Absinthe of the Heart.

The title was the first thing that caught my eye and then that book cover - quite alluring.

This book delivers a passionate romance based (to a degree) on Romeo and Juliet but with a slightly different twist.

Read it in one sitting - roll on September for book 2. What will happen?

Romeo and Juliet the ultimate romance and Monica has given us just that. Two households that have destroyed the future of two people that have fallen in love despite their family names. Holland and London are the modern day doomed couple, that may have a chance at a happier ending that the one that Shakespeare gave us. We have drama and passion, we have betrayal and more than just the two couples that are affected by the epic family battle.
From the beginning you fall for bad boy London and his fair Holland. You can see the fire they build while they battle the inevitable. What I didn't expect was the cliffer!!!!
The suspense the drama had me hook line and sinker. Monica James when do we get the next edition?!?!?! I am hooked on the star crossed lovers, Sin is sinfully addicting and Holland never stood a chance at fighting him off and neither did I.

I started this novel yesterday and I couldn't stop reading it. Monica wrote a modern version of Romeo & Juliet and I loved it. London and Holland s story is doomed since The beginning since their parents ' hatred for each other is palpable. We Will follow them from their childhood to their adulthood. The tension is still there so is he hatred. I noticed all the références to The original play and it was exciting to discover their stories. The cliffhanger leaves us wanting for more and We can t wait to read The next tome

I loved this book and I couldn’t put it down!

In the prologue is where we meet the parents of London and Holland at school, and see how their actions set a series of consequences meaning their children have grown up hating one another...or have they?

London is the boy who has everything - the looks, the money, the girls throwing themselves at him as he’s the school quarterback - except for loving parents. He is a reminder of the reason they are together and they barely give him the time of day.

Holland is the girl who has loving parents...and not much else. She is poor, lives in the hood and is a target for London’s torment on a daily basis.

One night Holland agrees to meet her friend Belle at a party in the woods. Whilst trying to find her, something happens that sets off a chain reaction in the lives of London, Holland, her (sometimes) boyfriend Lincoln, and her best friend Belle that comes to a head ten years later and leaves us with a cliffhanger and needing more!!!

This is my first book by this author and it definitely won’t be the last.

You’ll love this book if you like enemies to friends to lovers with lots of surprises along the way!!

Things change when at a party London takes the rap for trespassing so that Holland does not got in trouble by the police as she was looking for her friend Bella. Due to London’s previous history, he goes he goes to Juve.
While he is there Holland sends him letters to say thank you but he is his usual cold self.
Well he is in juvenile detention Holland gets a boyfriend who is called Lincoln and is London is arch nemesis.
After she confronts him one thing leads to another and she loses her virginity to London. His parting words were I win. She take this as meaning he wanted to get one up on Lincoln and she is deeply hurt As she realises that she had actually loved him all along.
10 years later Holland is due to marry Lincoln but is not feeling it. Especially after she comes face-to-face with London again. What will happen is when Holland and meet up with him again. Can she discover where her heart lies especially when truths become apparent. #books2blog

I loved reading Absinthe of the Heart! If you love angst driven books then this is the book for you.

I fell in love with Absinthe of the Heart and is the first book in the Sins of Yesterday series! If you love angst in your books you should love this book! I read in Monica James bio that she loves “writing honest, heartfelt and turbulent stories”. You get all 3 of these with Absinthe of the Heart.

Do you believe in history repeating itself? This is London Sinclair and Holland Brooks story. Their mothers were the best of friends until one fateful moment and then they become enemies.

While growing up it seems like London is always mean to Holland when he is secretly longing for her. They have a love/hate relationship. I won’t say any more but, like I said earlier I love their story.

I can’t wait for the next book! I hope it isn’t long until it comes out! I need more of their story!!!!

I love coming across an author I’ve never read before and just falling completely in love with their book! Omg everything about this story was so damn good. From the characters you just couldn’t help falling in love with to the ten tons of angst and shoot, I liked it so much I am even willing to forgive Monica James for the killer cliffhanger she left us with! I mean seriously that almost killed me, but this story was well worth the huge book hangover I was left with.

Holland and London were destined to be enemies from before they were even born. Their parents made sure of that one when one betrayed the other and their rivalry began. Now Holland and London go to the same school in the same small town their parents grew up in and cannot stand to be near each other. Both were from very rich and influential families until Holland's family lost almost everything and no one, least of all Holland's family will ever let them forget that fact.

“What was done could never be undone, and what they’d all done would never be forgotten…or forgiven, for generations to come.”

Ah ok, so these two do not get along, you know on top of the whole bad blood between the two families thing and they are always at each other and throwing a good jab in whenever the opportunity presents itself. But you can see pretty early on they are walking that very thin line between love and hate. London or Sin as he is known is more or less the bully in the whole thing, but no matter what he puts out there you know there is a good guy underneath all that. Holland is a strong women and doesn’t take shit from anyone, most of all not from her hot as hell arch enemy. But what happens when one night challenges everything they thought they knew, and the person you have been taught to hate is really the one you love? Is it even possible to get a happy ending?

“London Sinclair didn’t just break my heart; he fucking set it on fire and threw the ashes to the wind. I loved him, and in return, he danced on my grave.”

This book was so good, the drama and angst had me glued to the pages and I was a complete mess for half the book. I loved Holland and London so much and was truly pulling for these star crossed lovers. I wanted them to have a chance and not be affected because of the choices their parents made so long ago. Then that cliffhanger…why oh why? I need more and I need it pronto!! I highly recommend this book and can not wait for the next one!

“Love is messy, inconvenient, and at times, heartbreaking, but when you find it, you’ll do anything to hold it because you’re at it’s complete mercy.”

I really loved this book! This is a must read and I hope we don’t have to wait long for another book!!!

After I read the prologue I was instantly hooked.

In the beginning we are introduced to London and Holland’s parents and how their friendship developed and how things changed as they got older.
The characters are relatable and you instantly have a connection with them.

London has always been mean and has given Holland a hard time at school and she just can’t wait to get school over with.
She moved away and comes back home before getting married. Can she get over the past and move on or will being home bring back emotions she can’t understand.

I guarantee you will not be disappointed in this heartfelt loving story.
