A surprisingly good little coffee table book filled with facts about the moon. It is beautifully illustrated and fun to read.
There are two things that keep this from being a 3 star book. The author talks about how clever Columbus and the Spaniards were for using their knowledge of upcoming eclipses to fool indigenous people. That is one way to look at it.
The science facts are- well, first I hope that any reader isn't trusting a coffee table book to be a resource for scientific truth. This books get the basics right at the very least, but then you run across statements like this:
"On days of high negative ion activity, the voting public tended to lean more toward candidate George W. Bush. According to Cramer, these were days when people were calm and thinking clearly. On days of high positive ion activity around the time of the full moon, when people were more stressed and feeling 'out of sorts' they were supportive of the opposition Al Gore."
You heard it here guys, bad full moon energy is why democrats get elected.
So if you read some of the science facts in this book maybe do a minute or two of outside research before taking it at face value.
Earth’s closest neighbor, the moon, has long served as a source of inspiration for poets, mathematicians, artists, and astronomers. Explore its characteristics, read legends about the tides and eclipses. Read moon poems. Meet the gods and goddesses of the ancient peoples and explore moon myths. Does the moon affect our behavior or does it only speak to the imagination? Learn about the space race and early efforts at traveling to the moon. Discover the ways we study the moon and look at the moon today.
Two glossaries follow the science, the facts, the legends, the fiction, and the poems. One is of terms, the other of people.
Young readers will enjoy the juxtaposition of fact and fiction; the colorful illustrations unify the various segments into a cohesive presentation designed for readers ages eight and above.
An inspiring and celebratory text that explores the cultural and historical presence that the moon has had in societies throughout human history. A delight to read.
This book was loaned to me by my teacher and I loved it, such a fascinating read; its facts, myths and legends related to our moon really shows the work put into this book and the ability the author has to captivate readers' minds. As well as the author, the illustrator, _______, has drawn bewildering illustrations that match the tone of the book perfectly.
The Moon puts the reader into deep thought about the galaxy we live in. It educates them on the scientifically proven facts and and people's superstitions about the moon. It take the reader around the globe and through the years to bring to light the part of the moon lesser-known to the world in which ancestors, distant cultures and long lost generations believed.
It keeps the reader hooked, making them ask them self if we really know even half the facts and details of our moon.
The Moon taught me many facts that I didn't know about our moon, and even took me through the milky way to sight other moons on different planets. After learning all of this information, I shared it with my teacher, head teacher and family to see if they knew what I learnt about our moon. Of course, my teacher probably did since it's his book, my family were quite impressed and my head teacher was fascinated.
The further into the pages I got, the deeper the mysteries became and the more I question the moon, and the more desperate I became to read it in bed every night.
I highly recommend this book to curious people who love the universe and its backstory.
I have always loved the moon. Being of Chinese heritage, I have a childhood full of moon-watching and moon cakes and stories of the moon rabbit. I even named my daughter Luna, as she was born on the night of the full moon and the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. So, while wandering through the shelves of Barnes and Noble, my eye was caught by the beautiful cover. And yes, I totally judge a book by its cover.
It lived up to its potential. Full of not only scientific/historical facts, this book also included myths, legends, and the artistic inspirations surrounding the moon. What I really liked is that it made it a point to include non-European culture/viewpoints and non-Christian faiths/traditions, which is rarer to find in many of these factual-oriented books. Every page had new things for me to learn, and there was a subtle sense of humor lurking in some of the wording, which made it less dry than expected.
The illustrations are gorgeous. This is a big deal to me, because a book can be amazing, but if the art style is not to my liking, it can really ruin my enjoyment of the book. I loved the art style of this book, and it enhanced my love of this book.
All in all, a worthy buy. Pretty enough to be a coffee table book, but enough good content to be a daily read (even if it's just to read a single page worth of facts). I can't wait for my daughter to be old enough to read this book.
I really enjoyed the variety of illustrations in this book, especially since many of them filled the entire page and some were even double-page spreads. The contents are a wide collection of ruminations on the Moon exploring humans' fascination with Earth's satellite. The book covers myths and legends, Moon phases, the effects the Moon has on our bodies and our behavior and the Earth, and even the space race and early attempts to reach the Moon. There's even a section devoted to how the Moon has inspired various creative spirits, including artists and storytellers. Suitable for browsing and dipping into when the mood or the Moon inspires you, this book covers a lot of territory but does so with grace and simplicity. While much of its contents were familiar to me, I still found some new information and enjoyed the way the facts and stories were presented. I wish the text size had been larger since sometimes it was small and got lost on the pages with the colorful illustrations.
Nice to leave through and use as a start for more in depth research or just get inspired, not useful if you need reliable facts.
Cute book, interesting storys and facts, really nice illustrations! I especially loved the way this book was so colorful, it's a nice change to the usually rather plain non fiction books. But some of the information would have done good with some more fact checking. Maybe it was the german translation or maybe it's also in the English version, but i have noticed several mistakes. Just two i can remember off the top of my head : ->we didn't send any more humans to the moon since 1969 because it's expensive (wrong, 1969 was the first moon landing, the last was 1972) ->The Spaceshuttle program ended 2001 (wrong, the columbia disaster didn't even happen before 2003, and the shuttle continued flying until 2011, so i asume it was a typo) And probably more that i forgot or didn't notice.
Originally published in 2018 in Great Britain, this book has a great feel to it -- slick paper with heft and a wonderful embossed cover (although the seas/shadows on both the cover and title page are incorrect shapes). Unfortunately, the content is wide, ut shallow.
Grouped loosely into chapters, this book mixes science with story and myth about the moon. Beliefs about the moon from the past are found with what we know today, phases of the moon, how the moon affects earth's tides, scientific and Native American names of the moon, and space exploration of the moon are all covered.
Appended are a glossary of terms and a glossary of people mentioned in the book.
I enjoyed how this book covered a wide variety of topics ranging from mythology to science. The illustrations are beautiful. I'm not sure it would fit with the style of this book but I would not have minded to having some actual photographs of the moon worked in somehow.
An absolutely fascinating book which covers everything moon related (although I noticed Pink Floyd's the Dark side of the Moon never got a mention). But from art to science and everything in between, you will never look at the moon quite the same again but you will still look at it with wonder.
This is Theo's favourite book! We have 'read' bits of it every night for almost a year. Even though this book is for adults, illustrations are beautiful. I'm looking forward to being able to read more and more of it to Theo as he grows up. We have almost mastered the moon phases ☺️
Spousta náhodných faktů a příběhů o Měsíci. Zábavnější k prohlížení než ke čtení, každopádně jako poklad do knihovny pro namátkové listování ok a pro starší děcka posedlé/fascinované vesmírem ideální.
3.75 stars. I enjoyed reading this book. I learned some new things about the history of the moon, and how different cultures view the moon. I picked up this book at a local small business, and I'm glad I did.
