Don’t Miss the Excitement and Passion of Regency Romance by Isabella Thorne
Follow Isabella Thorne on Amazon, BookBub and Facebook.
Isabella Thorne is an author of Regency and Georgian Romance. The first grown-up books she read were historical, authored by Georgette Heyer, Victoria Holt and Anna Seton. Unfortunately, for her own daughters, the beauty and hallmark of Regency Romance, witty dialogue and the manners of the time, have been overshadowed by explicit books instead of true Regency Romance. Regency Romance includes a more formal language, longer sentences and ballrooms instead of bedrooms.
With a return to romance, Isabella Thorne hopes you will enjoy her light fun books. You can share them with your daughters with the guarantee that although there is romance aplenty, and a bit of sexual tension and a kiss, there is nothing explicit in her books. They are clean and wholesome reads with lots of humor and upbeat "fun poking" at the English mannerisms of the time.
Because I love the pageantry of the period, I love to include true events or set stories during a war--the English were involved in so many of them at this time! You will find bits of history scattered through the books and an occasional historical figure, but these books are FICTION and not intended to be a definitive history. None of the Peerage of (any land) actually existed. I hope that all the British and the die-hard historical readers will please forgive this passionate American if I make any mistakes, and send an email off to isabellathorne@christianromancestories.com I will make corrections.
I endeavor to make the heros and heroines true to their time period. That means that many women may seem weak at first glance, but they soon find their inner grit. Unlike today's heroines, the Regency heroine could not openly defy convention at the time. Instead, she had to find a way around the convention. That is half the fun! Likewise, heros were expected to be chauvinistic. In fact, the etymology of chauvinism shows that the word chauvinism did not appear until the late 1800's and then was a pejorative term the English had for the French who continued to be slavishly patriotic to Napoleon. What we call chauvinistic, the Regency called masculine or virile. I will always choose to make my characters as historically correct as possible, even if that means they seem a bit politically incorrect to today's audiences.
I am a meticulous perfectionist who taught AP English for 20 years at the high school level before moving to teach at a community college because I was disheartened by the decline in American education, especially the decline of the reading level. Be forewarned that the longer sentences in my books cause an upward trend in the reading level, which settles at about seventh grade, instead of the fourth grade level found in newspapers and many, so called, adult books. An occasional typo may slip by me, but is usually caught by my editor, who is a fellow teacher, or by my Beta and ARC readers who are marvelous. You can expect long sentences in my books, just like they were in yesteryear. You may even learn a few new words. I hope so! I guess I am still a bit of a teacher at heart.

I think perhaps I expected a little more than what it was... I have only 2 triggers when reading. So for this, I am going to put the whole thing in a spoiler rather than just some spacing...
This is a dark romance, where the heroine, Prudence, escapes an abusive home, only to be married off to an even more abusive and sadistic husband - Jasper, The Earl of Fondleton (yes, that's his name. I know...cringe). Anyhoo, after three months of marriage, she manages to escape but with no where to go so she makes her way to the convent her elder sister Temperance, escaped to a few years back, when she herself had escaped their father's abuse. Unable to give refuge to a married woman, the Mother Abbess offers shelter for a night during which Temperance, a postulant soon to take her vows, helps Prudence get settled. After discovering the horrific evidence of the severe beatings and abuse Prudence has endured, the Mother Abbess quickly changes her tune and makes arrangements for Prudence to live near the Abbey, but tucked away at her nephew's estate.
George, Baron Halthaven leads a quiet life on his estate where he farms and takes care of his ward, an eleven year old girl that was his late cousin's daughter. As nephew to the Mother Abbess, he is used to helping the convent by offering temporary shelter and protection to those in need. Prudence arrives at the estate where she will become a companion to his ward while the convent arranges for a permanent home for her to relocate to.
In the meantime, George doesn't ask any questions about Prudence's past, and as instructed by the Mother Abbess, she shares nothing, or at least very little. But George assures her she is safe and she can relax and feel safe as long as she stays at the estate. However, Prudence's husband is furious when he discovers she has left and begins to look for her. Just when Prudence has found some happiness, even laughter and hope again, a permanent home has been secured by the abbey and Prudence must prepare to relocate, leaving George and Marietta behind. On the night before her departure, a harvest ball is thrown by the Baron for the locals and Prudence is urged to attend and enjoy her last evening. George has a hard time accepting her departure as the right thing and urges Prudence to stay with him, admitting to her that he loves her. Heartbroken because she loves him too, she prepares to depart the next morning. But Prudence receives a letter from Jasper with a demand she cannot refuse as it's no longer just her life at stake.
I really enjoyed this book, although I was iffy with the prologue. I just didn't care for it. The rest was very well written given the sensitive material and I was completely drawn in to Prudence's plight. The story is dark and heavy, with abuse discussed but very little witnessed on-page. The abuse aftermath was a bit more detailed but still written tastefully. George was a quiet man but in the big scheme of things, he knew he wasn't in a place to ask a lot of questions of those he gave refuge. But he took a shine to Prudence and they had a connection that was gently growing into something they couldn't deny. Their romantic moments at the ball were sweet and tender and you just felt for these two... He asking her to stay and her knowing she couldn't let her guard down by staying. She never told him she was married but I think that had she not been leaving the next day she would have spilled all her secrets to him. I would have liked to have seen Prudence confide everything in George, and witness his reaction to her trusting him with her story, seeing her scars, comforting her with promises, loving her battered body. But the kidnapping plot worked fine and George hears of Prudence's married state from the husband himself. Of course, by then, George already sees what a monster Jasper is so it doesn't really faze him. I liked most of the ending and the fact that Jasper met his demise at the hands of someone else entirely, thereby keeping Prudence, Temperance, and George truly innocent in the matter. I was holding out for some private moments with Prudence and George after all the dust settled but we don't get them. And the epilogue was weak - I was hoping for much more than what was offered but hopefully book 2 in the series will give a hint at Prudence and George's life together.
All in all an excellent book, no steam, just a few kisses. On to Temperance's story!

I received a free book and voluntarily chose to review it. Get your tissues out. There are sad parts in this book. The blurb says enough so I will keep the possible happenings for you to read. I don’t usually read sad books, but this one kept me reading to the end.
4.5 stars What a life Prudence lived! Firstly, at home and then with her husband. Little wonder she ran away. She felt dowdy compared with her sisters as they were all blonde and slim, whereas Prudence had an hourglass figure and was a brunette. I did like the connection with her sister, Temperance. George, Baron Halthaven, was such an honourable man. Little wonder that Prudence fell in love with him. Nothing goes smoothly though. Her husband, Jasper, isn’t a man to give up easily on what is his. A very engrossing read. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Lady Prudence💃💔 is married off by her abusive father to an even worse Earl. The Earl👹, Jasper, is a sadist and he beats her over and over, ties her up, and even bites her so badly it and the whip lashes leave scars. Finally, she runs away while he is gone. She has no money and no where to go, except to the abbey where her sister, Temperance, is a novice. Since Prudence💃💔 is married, she cannot become a novice, but the abbess has a nephew that lives nearby. He is George🐺, a single Baron, caring for his late brother's young daughter, Marietta👩.
Prudence💃💔 is sent to George's estate to become the companion of Marietta👩. George🐺 isn't told of her circumstances and she gives him a false last name, because she is deathly afraid Jasper👹 will find her.

I enjoyed by his book very much! This is a story of an abused and tortured young woman💔 who trusts no man, and how she learns to live and fall in 💘love.
Unable to tolerate more abuse Lady Prudence flees in search of protection and a new life. Not easy when women were considered a property with no right. Liked Lady Prudence’s sensibility and her rebellious spirit. A story with strong issues and emotions, darkness within, violence, new choices, romance and a HEA. Easy to read, good pace and an interesting plot development with good protagonists and an evil and dark villain.
Wow this was a fantastic read. I'm really shocked that I got into it so quick. I loved it from start to end and would happily read the rest of this authors work.
One can only feel for Prudence's move from one abusive relationship to another. Her husband was a monster of the highest calibre and his demise was the best thing for him! I say ' good on ' the barkeeper' s actions for so dealing with Prudence's husband as he did because he so loved his daughters as it should be. Isabella Thorne didn't go into lurid details about the two men's (Prudence's father and husband) actions but her writing left no shadow of a doubt that they thought it their given right to treat women as they did. It took a great deal of courage for Prudence to do as she did and was it not for the kindness of the Abbess and Lord Halthaven Prudence would never have known another life and a happier one. Prudence's sister Temperance knew exactly what she was going through because it had happened to her and she supported her as best she could. The story was an excellent read and thoughtfully written, the Baron's ward Marietta and the pup 'posey' brought a lighter and healing note to the story. I would thoroughly recommend this book.
I loved this book, the series has been wonderful so far. This book that contains severe abuse, compassion, healed heart and body and of course love. Great read
This is a very dark historical story. While it does have a romance at its core, this feels greatly overshadowed by the darkness of the heroine’s past and present. In fact, about 25% of the book is spent detailing this, and we don’t even meet the hero until about the quarter mark. Even after they meet, I don't feel like much time was spent in the development of their relationship. The story seems tightly focused on the heroine and her struggles. I felt like I wanted to know the hero better. He was definitely a good and decent man, but like the villains in this story, he felt two dimensional. I like my books to resemble life in that no person is wholly good or wholly evil, and unfortunately, this book has failed in this characterization aspect. The villains in this story are truly evil, not just bad people, especially the heroine’s abusive husband whom we get to know quite a bit about.
The author did handle the difficult topics that this book addresses with delicacy. We don't see abuse happening, but we do see its effects as well as snippets of memory. I really do think authors that deal with topics like incest, rape, and domestic violence should have trigger warnings at the bottom of their book blurbs. A reader should not have to infer from the blurb that such things are an integral part of a book. Saying that a character’s husband is worse than her father, a monster, doesn't give enough detail for those who need for their own personal comfort and safety to stay away from such topics.
There were a few odd problems with grammar, punctuation, and usage. Commas in particular seem problematic, with extra ones thrown in and others missing. There was one time when the heroine’s maiden name was misspelled as Barrington instead of Baggington.
Personally, I don't like historical romances to be so dark, so I can't say that I enjoyed this book.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This a story based on the reality of what happens in a family where secrets are kept and abuse is unchecked. It also shows how Love can help to bring happiness. this is a excellent story and worth the read. Recieved a free copy of this book and voluntarily leaving a review.
A book that will entrainment you until the end... An intense story... deep and full of surprises and twists. A woman running from an abusive husband... A lone baron... honourable and strong... I recommend this book to all...
TITLE: How does a young girl recover emotionally from years of abuse?
SETTING: The Baggington girls suffered from the perverse addictions of their father, and were eager to escape his attentions. Years before, Temperance had escaped by running away to join a nunnery at Halthurst Abbey. Prudence sought relief in marrying a near stranger who had passionately kissed her and had been observed doing so, resulting in a rapid wedding to the man she had only met once—when she was caught and kissed. Never did Prudence imagine marriage to be worse for her than being abused by her own father!! Prudence had thought marriage would release her from the bondage of a deviant, incestuous father, only to find herself bound, literally, as her new husband, the Earl of Fondleton, Jasper Numbton, beat and abused her. After three months of such abuse (a life of such torment no one could endure) she ran away to the Abbey with the clothes on her back and a little puppy, the runt of the litter, destined for destruction by order of her cruel husband. The Head Abbess made arrangements for her to be the companion of Marietta, a 12 year old girl under the care of the Abbess’ nephew, until a more permanent situation could be found for Prudence. This is Prudence’s story in the series “The Nettlefold Chronicles ~ The Baggington Sisters”. CRITIQUE: A thoughtful story continues with this book, delving into the long term sequela victims of abuse face, even when removed from their abuser. They may fail to recognize signs that lead them right back into a similar situation. Or they can change their self-perception from one of victim to one of self-trust and self-respect and remake their lives. Generally, there are some stumbles along the way, as we see in Prudence’s case, where she marries someone even worse than her first abuser, then gains enough courage to run away for good. I have enjoyed the variety of points of view from the perspective of the various girls as they heal from their traumatic childhood. This book, too, handles a terrible situation with delicacy so as to not offend genteel readers. Good H & h, rational storylines, and a good HEA make for an enjoyable experience.
Tame romance but includes several trigger warnings and an ending that tanked
Was a relatively sweet romance---aside from the prevailing PTSD from repeated abuse theme (only kiss late in book). Still, it was a fairly enjoyable story UNTIL it completely devolved with the climax of the villianous plot near the end. Even though you knew it would happen at some point, it played out in such a ridiculous and contrived fashion that the whole thing just went way downhill for me - particularly the heroine's actions (or rather INACTION) during the encounter. For me, her actions were unforgivable and actually angered me, especially at that point in the story.
I just happened across this book, and even though I generally prefer at least a little spice in my HRs, I may have given this author another try until they completely lost me at the end---both by the story and their bio.
I will say that I appreciate the non-gorgeous model on the cover, which matches the description of the heroine in the book.
I wish I had seen their bio before reading, as she comes across very self-righteous and I was quite put off by it. Touting her books are clean & wholesome. REALLY?!?! Just because they only kiss once or twice doesn't make it wholesome if the whole rest of the book deals with rape/parental & spousal physical & sexual abuse/assault and the resulting PTSD---and even though we know it is a horrible marriage, she is basically cheating also. And she says her books are light and fun. Ummmmm, not this one that's for sure. It goes on and I was really turned off by all the preaching and almost shaming (she calls it "teaching") there.
All this adds up to: I will not be reading anything further from this author. I don't feel the writing is good enough to balance all of my issues with the story & the author. Sorry Ms. Thorne, I read all steam levels, but I'll certainly take my steamy reads and whatever length sentences over your work any day at this point. As I wrote this review, I ended up knocking down one more star just for insulting my intelligence with the bad plot & timing as well as the attitude.
This was quite an enjoyable read and much better than the first book that I read by this author. I will be keeping an eye out for more of her books.
The book is a Regency romance with 204 pages which I refer to as a short novel. It is a moderate read which took me about four hours to read. Usually short novels tend to be lighter reads which I can read faster. It is the first book in the Baggington Sisters series which can be read as a stand-alone. There is no swearing, no cheating, a little kissing, no cliffhangers, and a HEA. There could be triggers for some as past abuse is mentioned, both as a wife and as a daughter. The typos and grammatical errors were quite a few (around thirty) but didn’t drop me out of the story near as much as they usually do.
The story is basically a heroine, fearing for her life, flees an abusive marriage and finds safety with the hero with whom she falls in love. The story is interesting and engaging as are the characters. There could be more atmosphere to the settings but there is an adequate amount. The writing is more complex, than usual romances of this length, which made the story more enjoyable. It reads like a full-length (300 – 500 pages) novel providing more richness to the narrative, the plot, and the characters. The story has love, fear, hope, suspense, karma, sisters reuniting, simple pleasures, a vile villain, a compassionate handsome hero, and a cute puppy.
The story would be much better without the errors, but it is still enjoyable and intriguing though on the dark side at times. I would give it a B+ for just the story, but with the errors, it gets a C+ (3½ stars). I really wish that Amazon would allow half stars.

ONE WICKED ROLLERCOASTER RIDE!!! Dastardly demented! Isabella unleashes one nail-biting, action packed, hard hitting, page flipping bombshell, searching for shelter and finding sanctuary, blasting this jewel to life flawlessly. Anarchy, escapades and havoc run amuck, kicking this bad boy into a raging tempest, blasting it into a tailspin with astonishing results. Buckle up baby you're in deep as we witness the characters formidable trials and challenging tribulations, shocking twists and wicked turns, hard fast rules and revealing revelations, wrapping this gem up sleek, shiny and tight. Nightmares run rampant and deception is rife, rolling with the drama, turmoil, abuse, intrigue, secrets, danger, spiraling suspense and intense situations, along with a boatload of determination while dodging deadly intents, you have one intoxicating masterpiece. Eliminating the lines and crushing boundaries, limitations are stretched and manipulated, putting our characters through their paces, testing them in ways they could have never imagined. The characters are complex and genuine with traits and qualities that add depth and realism that blend and flow, transforming into amazing personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions that feel as though you were transported to ground zero with them. Fantastic job Isabella, thanks for sharing this lil' fella with us.
Miss Prudence Baggington was to marry an Earl which she was excited to do as it would get her out of her father's house who was the Viscount Mortel a very cruel and mean man. She hoped that the Earl she was to marry whom she'd only met once was a good man. She had been married three months to a man who was actually worse than her father when she ran away with the surprise in her carpet back. She ran to Halthaven, where the Abby that her older sister had gone to join up and become a nun. When she arrived she had to walk to the Abby and crossed the river which was flooded the bridge was out she found a low place that she could cross that and ended up in the water the waist down and then she continued to walk to the Abby. When she got there the doorkeeper went and got the the mother superior. Who took her in a room where she talked with her discovered that she was Lady Fondleton married to the Earl Lord Fondleton. The mother superior allowed her to speak to temperance her sister and finally agreed that she could spend one night in the Abby for she would be returned to her husband. To find out what actually happens you have to read the book. Very good book...
This is a very well written book. I like the way the author deals with the very real topic of abuse from a generation many years past. As a reader we are able to travel alongside Prudence from the end of her years with her family growing up, through her short, miserable time as wife of the Earl Fondleton, her escape from him to the home she finds herself sheltering in. In this home she is shown the life of safety, love and respect she has always deserved but of which is so foreign to her. This author has a great way of describing the different surroundings & typical way people were in that period of time. I found it just beautiful to read of the way Prudence blossomed into a totally different young lady as she was valued and shown the love of a true and wholesome family! Naturally, as this is a love story there was a love growing between her and Lord Halthaven. But there was still the threat of repercussions from the Earl of Fondleton which I will not go into as you will want to read that part for yourself! This is a book I would absolutely recommend to any who like Historical Love stories with true to life struggles such as abuse!
This is a wonderful story. It is well written, the characters are engaging and have depth. The bad guys are really evil, not bad but evil. Lady prudence Baggington is the second oldest, she had younger brothers and sisters and tried to protect them and now she was getting married. The Earl of Fondleton had kissed her and got caught, so he married Prudence. She thought that now she did not have to endure her father's sick treatment. She had only gone from one monster to another. After three months she ran. Temperance her older sister ran away to an abbey. So Prudence went there. Lord George Halthaven had been enlisted by the abess to keep her until they could find a safer place for her. He was her nephew and lived a short distance away but isolated. The author did a really great job on this, I cried, laughed, and hoped there would be a solution. I was held captive by this tale. I so highly recommend this book.
I received this ARC from candid reviews and voluntarily reviewed it.
This is intense, tragic, suspenseful and heartwarming. Prudence thought that she was escaping from hell when, after she was caught kissing an Earl, they were forced to wed. But it turned out tat her father was not the only monster in the world, or the worst. She manages to get away one day and runs to an abbey. She planned to stay there, but the Reverend Mother sent her to her nephew until she found someplace more permanent. George had been helping his aunt for years, hiding women for a variety of reasons. The longer she stayed, the happier and freer she felt. George was kind, caring, gentle and protective, towards her and his ward. Unfortunately things don't go as planned. There are triggers for some, physical abuse is talked about and incest is hinted at but never outright stated. The storyline, other than those two factors, was intriguing and sweet. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Candid Book Reviews. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
It is an ironclad unwritten rule in romance writing - the heroine and hero must have their happy ending. When I began to read Prudence's story that seemed like a very remote possibility. Isabella Thorne's clean and gentle handling of some very dark themes (incest, child abuse, spousal abuse, rape) makes it easier to read the story, but Prudence's suffering is very real, and her courage in seeking escape from her tormentors is remarkable. I had a bit of difficulty with the whole "underground railroad" style network run by a remarkably worldly-wise nun/abbess in a cloistered convent, and the Baron who serves as Prudence's temporary protector is just too saintly and too perfect - his character lacks depth and humanity. All in all, it's a bit of a stretch to buy into this story, but Ms. Thorne spins a good yarn, with excellent attention to historical detail. Fans of the genre will no doubt enjoy it. - ARC Review
Escaping from an abusive marriage is never easy, although the ladies of the Regency era had far fewer resources than women have today. Nevertheless, running to a convent is perhaps the best thing that could have happened to Prudence, when she comes face to face with the wise Abbess. Transferred to the care and protection of her nephew, Lord Halthaven, Prudence begins to heal and regain some of her spirits. Unfortunately, her past and all its atrocities catch up with her, drawing the baron and those she loves into the net. Despite her suffering, Prudence still has the ability to see the good in people and the Baron is everything a gentleman of honour should be. Added to the mix, the Baron's ward and a small puppy called Posey, all culminate in a very good plot. The book suspenseful and romantic, highlighting the devastating effects of abuse. It is also well written, clean and a standalone. I received a copy of this novel as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
This story will definitely pull at your heartstrings. It deals with some difficult topics such as abuse, and the author handled them with with great care and sensitivity. Get ready for a roller coaster ride of emotions as Prudence battles with the darkness in her life and finds her way to light and how George helps her with her journey. These were both well-developed characters and both worked well together. The story flowed nicely and kept my interest all the way through. A compelling and emotional read that I couldn't put down. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I confess, I’m a sensitive soul. So when I read books that are disturbing and distressful, I find it difficult to read and finish them. I skimmed over several chapters in this book because I found the tale too shocking. Thankfully, I knew it would end well and our heroine would find love, peace and contentment. The horrible elements mentioned in this book - incest, sexual abuse, physical and emotional abuse, etc - are a reality in our society. May this story remind us of this fact and may it motivate us to help those around us who are victims of such abuses.
It was about a woman named Prudence who was forced to marry a man she did not love.He quickly started beating her. After three months, Prudence found a way to escape. She went to the abby that her sister was at. The mother of the nuns would not let her stay bec she is married and had to go back 2 her husband. When the mother saw her bruised back, she decided not to send her back to her husband. The mother sent her to her nephew Baron George to hide. As they got to know each other, feelings grew. I hated her husband. It has a great ending. This author, Isabella Thorne, is now a favorite author.
Prudence is brave, her desire to no longer be baggage seems to land her out of the pot and into the fire. I felt sorry for her and really wish she had more self-esteem because she has been through so much. I was surprised that this ended up having some dark romance elements though. Love George, he is such a kind, accepting and patient man with enough happiness to bring some long-time coming brightness into the life of Prudence. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author.
This was an intense, emotional, sad, angsty story set in a historical setting, dealing with matters that usually are swept under the rug, namely abuse of women in various forms from fathers and spouses alike. No need to repeat the storyline here, the blurb says it all. Still, it's a romance, and as such it has its happy ending. If you don't mind dark story themes, then you'll definitely enjoy this well written book.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have read the series out of sequence, but it hasn't mattered as they haven't really anything of the story line ,other than the main characters and their father that hold the stories together. I enjoyed this book as much as the other, and although this is a bit darker, I recommend it. Prudence has the rare chance to escape from her brutal husband and she takes it to run to the Abbey where her sister lives as a novice. From there she is given the chance to live in freedom-- as long as her husband doesn't find her,
Great book! I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Countess and The Baron: Prudence.
After reading clean romance for too long I was bored by the same stories "repackaged" over and over. So I gave Isabella Thorne and her historical romance a try. Wow. What a great change of pace! Ms. Thorne is such a great author and I love the way she writes and portrays the characters. The story line was refreshingly new. There was a depth to her characters that I had been missing. I couldn't put it down. I definitely recommend this book.
First a warning to anyone who has been abused, this story may cause you stress. Prudence, the subject of the story was subjected to abuse by her father who then married her off to an abusive husband. The abuses were horrific and Prudence runs away to the convent her sister joined to escape their father. She cannot stay there because she is a married woman and the convent will be forced to return her to her husband. When the mother superior sees her wounds she decides to help Prudence escape. She hides her, temporarily, at the estate her nephew owns and she works as a governess to his ward. Meanwhile her husband is in pursuit and still committing atrocities. I liked Prudence's attitude, her hope overcoming her fears, her understanding of the limitations the convent was under, and her not wanting to place others in danger from her cruel husband. While the subject matter is dark it's one faced by so many, even today. At least this one turned out as an HEA. I will be reading the other books in the series to see how all the Baggington sisters overcame their childhood trauma.
