Eric Carle was an American author, designer and illustrator of children's books. His picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first published in 1969, has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies. Carle's career as an illustrator and children's book author accelerated after he collaborated on Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?. Carle illustrated more than 70 books, most of which he also wrote, and more than 145 million copies of his books have been sold around the world. In 2003, the American Library Association awarded Carle the biennial Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal (now called the Children's Literature Legacy Award), a prize for writers or illustrators of children's books published in the U.S. who have made lasting contributions to the field. Carle was also a U.S. nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2010.
Eric Carle put out a Christmas book this year. His art style is on full display here. This beginning book uses all the sights of the season: snowmen, candles, trees, Santa, and a very grouchy Ladybug to give us this little simple Christmas story. Santa gives the Ladybug a present and the Ladybug isn’t grouchy, she’s happy.
I still like Eric’s artwork.
The nephew did read this and he thought it was simple. He likes bugs and ladybugs, but he thought there should have been a rollie pollie on the page. He didn’t think this was all that good, he is too old for it. He gave this just 2 stars.
This book describes the spirit of Christmas whose good cheer brings out the best in even the Grouchy Ladybug. It is more style than substance, filled with holiday-themed artwork done in Eric Carle's beautiful, tissue paper, collage style.
Explores what Christmas means to many, including joy, snowflakes, fires, bells ringing, people singing and presents under the tree. It goes on to show that these things inspire the spreading of holiday cheer, even to the grouchy ladybug. Very cute with Carle’s signature illustrations.
CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR THE GROUCHY LADYBUG talks about everything exciting Christmas has to offer. There's snowflakes, fires, bells, presents, stockings, and so much more! In the background, there's a grouchy ladybug, but not even it is immune to the joy of Christmas. Christmas can cheer up "Even those grouchier than the rest".
Eric Carle does it again with his classic illustrations and simple wording for children. The only thing I wish is that there was a little bit more of the ladybug in the plot. The illustrations bring me back to THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR.
Final Verdict: I would recommend this to fans of Christmas and Eric Carle. It would make a great Christmas present or Stocking Stuffer.
Rhyming text describes lots of the fun things about Christmas. Classic Eric Carle illustrations and a very simple secular focus on Christmas being about joy. A good toddler read aloud.
This is my first "Grouchy Ladybug" book by Eric Carle. I can see how this series would work great for two-year-olds, or anyone going through a contrarian phase.
Likewise, I can see how this book could prompt laughter of relief, along the lines of, "I guess I'm not the only one who has to live with a grumpus." Or even, "Sigh! This too shall pass."
Most of the book still is devoted to holiday cheer. The ending is sweet. And, of course, the artwork is beautifully superb, superbly beautiful.
This brief picture book explores secular symbols of Christmas and concludes with The Grouchy Ladybug smiling as she receives a present from Santa. There's no real story here, and this is mainly just for toddlers who are learning about the holiday for the first time. The only draw for older readers is Carle's art.
Great book for children. I love it. The illustrations are lovely. The grouchy ladybug face looks funny :D . Rhyming story. I read this soft and fast. You can feel atmosphere of Christmas while reading this book. Everywhere flying the grouchy ladybug
Not near as fun as I thought it would be, given the grouchy ladybug has quickly become one of my favorite characters lately. The "Bah, humbugs" were cute...but I expected a tad more from this one and was left feeling disappointed.
Good Christmas story centered on joy for the preschool group. Several full page illustrations of Carle’s are used in this title along with other small individual illustrated objects done by Carle.
Ages 7-8 190 L The durable little grouch gets a new catchphrase for the season: "Bah, humbug!" Undistracted by the (determinedly secular) motifs of the season—bells, snowmen, candles—the bug flies blithely, bitterly onward until the last page turns that frown upside-down. Why? Friends. Carle fans will enjoy this Christmas souvenir in bold, clean collage. Don't miss the handsome endpapers.
