Fun, cute, and entertaining with beautiful illustrations, this is a must have book for children, parents and teachers to teach kids the proper way to think, and deal with worry and anxiety!
My little dinosaur has been having issues with anxiety and worry and this book is helping. Little Diggory doo is experiencing anxiety and his human Drew tries to help Diggory understand what anxiety is and how it will be okay. He also teaches him how to break the brain loop and focus on the positive.
The book is really helping. This is the second book in the Diggory doo series we have read and Declan loves them. Drew is trying to teach his dragon to behave and accept corrections. Drew not only teaches Diggory he teaches my little guy too!
I'm on the fence with this book. Some of the strategies are good ones, like taking a breath and counting to ten, doing things that make you feel better, and practicing doing something that makes you nervous. But some of the underlying text feels a bit like "Just think differently!" which isn't really a thing when dealing with anxiety. Especially if it's chronic, it's not something you can just turn off by forcing yourself to think the opposite. I wish that maybe there was a therapist involved that could help lead Diggery Doo in the right direction and that there would have been a little bit of dedication to telling him that it's okay to feel anxiety and to ask for help. But, in the end, it's a book that breaks down that feeling of anxiety and explains it in a way that makes sense to children. Books like these are so very important to normalize!
I suppose this is a decent picture book to use when talking to kids about anxiety, but I wish it had been better. It uses some higher level vocab than what I would expect for a book like this, which reads like it's for smaller children. Also some the rhyme schemes were messy, which I know is a dumb complaint for a children's picture book, but reading aloud would be affected by that.
I'm not sure how useful this is for the learner I intended to pick this up for. However, this can be a useful resource for others. I do like the advice to shift perspective -- for every 'what if I fail' also ask what if I succeed or what if it goes right, and think it's helpful when talking to one about their issues to shift it to another, in this case a pet dragon.
Sweet and beautiful explanation of general anxiety and how to deal with it when things are out of control. The only think I had with it was there was no real mention of anxiety disorders in the back parts and I think that would be helpful! Perhaps in a future volume?
The dragon series is ok but has some clear issues such as only this one child has a dragon rather than all the children each having a dragon they need to help. May be useful for some more minor or just beginning issues but not for more severe situations. Builds mindfulness practices.
love this entire series. my kids are AuDhd and struggle when I try to explain these kinds of topics. this reformats it so they actually HEAR the message. wonderful tool for us!
