When the one you want …

Daisy doesn’t believe love is ever-lasting, so it’s ironic as hell that she parlayed a business degree into a wedding planning business. More ironic still is her latest job bringing her back into contact with the man who’d taught her that love can’t last.

Is the one you can’t have…

To say Diego has been taught the hard way to bury emotions is an understatement. But when he’s called home to help the brother he hasn’t seen or spoken to in years, that’s one thing. It’s another entirely to also come face to face with the first woman he ever loved. First and only…

Can love conquer all?

Daisy’s learned to depend only on herself, and Diego is and always has been an island of one. And yet when they’re together, even when they’re bickering, still wary and haunted by memories of what was … it’s magic. The question is, how to find their way back to each other…?

Jill Shalvis is a NYT, USA Today, and Amazon Top 100 bestselling author of small-town romance and romcoms, known for big feels, found family, and plenty of shenanigans.

If you love small-town chaos, meddling friends and neighbors, sizzling chemistry, and heroes who fall hard for the one woman they absolutely did not plan on, you’re in the right place. Jill’s books blend laugh-out-loud moments with emotional gut punches, slow-burn tension, and deeply earned happily ever afters.

She writes the stories she loves to read: small-town romance and romantic comedies packed with heart, heat, second chances, grumpy/sunshine sparks, and the kind of found-family vibes that make you want to move right into the pages. Many of her series are perfect for binge-reading, and a number of her books are available in Kindle Unlimited and at major retailers.

It was meant to be...on the third go

I'm a fan of Jill Shalvis and I'm pretty sure that's not a secret. I will read anything she writes and I will enjoy the journey to love and happy ever after's.

BUT...

I find myself wanting and needing more when she writes a novella/short story. Twist of Fate needed a little bit more journey for me to truly believe in Diego and Daisy's happy ever after. Sure, they had history and it's obvious they were meant to be. There was a little too much forgiveness that happened quickly. I'm still peeved at Rocco (Diego's brother) and I didn't really feel that the separation between Daisy and Diego was delved into enough.

There was also the matter of their second chance at love needing a third. These two knuckleheads really need to communicate better. I just needed a little more proof that they weren't going to keep pushing each other away.

BUT...

It's a Jill Shalvis and I still laughed, squirmed and sighed and finished with a smile on my face. She's just that good.

Diego Stone had lived in San Diego for the past few years. He returns home to San Francisco after he receives a text asking him to help with his estranged older brothers wedding. They haven’t spoken in years, and it’s awkward, but even worse is coming face to face with the only woman he’s ever loved. He didn’t think he’d ever see Daisy again. It had been ten years, and the sight of her still rocked him to his core. She’d once felt like his missing piece, and his home. He found her new confidence sexy as hell, and the attraction still sizzled between them. He’d forgotten what desire this intense could feel like, but he needed to keep a level head, and keep his distance.

Daisy Evans is a 30 yr. old single woman living in San Francisco who works as an event planner. She’s currently working a wedding when she runs into the man who broke her heart, and never left it quite the same. Diego had been her first love, and first everything. He’d been the one person who’d always gotten her, and she’d missed his friendship. He’s back in town for a week, and she figures they just need to do their best to avoid one another. They clash at every turn, but one touch, and they discover the magic between them still exists. Can they find their way back to one another, or is it too late for them?

Twist of Fate (A Heartbreaker Bay Novella) by Jill Shalvis is a 1001 Dark Nights standalone story that is full of insane chemistry and sexy banter. I love this entire series, and this story was fantastic! I adored Diego and Daisy together and couldn’t put this book down!

-There'd always been something about being this close to him, something that constantly had her body humming just beneath her skin with anticipation and hunger and need.

-"I want you," she whispered. "I've... always wanted you."

-He was lost. Lost in her. Lost in them. Just like always.

-If he was being honest with himself, nothing had felt so right as being wrapped up in Daisy's arms again. It was if he belonged there.

Jill Shalvis’ Heartbreaker Bay series is a one of my faves, and with a solid track record of fabulous characters creating memorable, engaging, romantic stories, I was looking forward to Twist of Fate.

*Sigh* not the success I was hoping for and I’d go as far as saying that this didn’t feel like a Shalvis novella or fit in with the Heartbreaker Bay family and sadly the only word I can come up for it right now is bland.

I’m just thankful that this remarkably short read—90ish pages with 20% of that devoted to 1001 Dark Nights pimping their other titles—didn’t feature a couple we’d been waiting for, and that I’ve read enough of the author’s books to know this is absolutely not the norm nor will it have any bearing whatsoever on picking a book up from her in the future.

Twist of Fate was a second chance romance that was sweet and sexy. But this book was also a second chance for brothers, which warmed my heart even further. Add in the fact that this can easily be read as a standalone, and this book was such a huge win. So if you're a fan of Jill Shalvis, second chance romance and books with family, then you're in for a treat!
When she opened up, she expected a smile at her appearance. Or some smartass remark.
Instead, Diego met her gaze. “What happened to us?”he asked quietly.
The sentence shocked her and gave her heart an odd kick.

Diego Stone came back into town for his brother's wedding. And if you read Playing for Keeps, then you're going to remember and love his brother, Rocco. He owned the local tattoo shop and was a good friend to the main heroine from that book, Katie. Even though Diego and Rocco had a falling out over the years, he still came back to town to help his brother out with his wedding. But he didn't even expect to run into Daisy Evans, his high school sweetheart and first love.
Their gazes met and locked, and in his eyes, she saw the things that hopes and dreams were made of.

Daisy was the wedding planner for Rocco's wedding, so Diego couldn't escape her. It had been ten years since they saw each other. And they had a falling out too. Diego tried his hardest to keep his emotions buried again, but between Daisy and his brother, it became impossible to do.
“Miss this,” he murmured against her ear, the words escaping without conscious thought.
“San Francisco?”
“You.”
She stared up at him with those big eyes.

We alternated between Daisy and Diego, so we got to see the depths of their hurt. But regardless of the pain from their past, their spark was still there. And even though it had been ten years, it was like no time had passed at all. When they touched or laughed, it felt like they picked up right where they left off. Especially with memories of their past everywhere. Daisy and Diego were both sweet and caring, so of course I was rooting for their hea! Especially with Deigo going to the lengths he did, he was by far my favorite in this story! So if you love second chance romance stories, that you can devour in one sitting, definitely pick this one up!

Diego have good reasons to be pissed at his brother. But even if the men are not close, Diego came back to San Francisco for his sibling's wedding. But dealing with family's dynamics is not the only history he'll have to revisit. Because the wedding planner is none other than Daisy Evans, his first girfriend. It's been ten years since he last saw her, when she went away to New York for school and broke his heart. But if you ask her, the version will be different.

Twist of Fate is a second chance romance in the Heartbreaker Bay series and a great addition to it. Love, friendship and family, I can always count on Jill Shalvis to tackle this with the perfect dose of emotions and fun and sweet.

This is unlike the Heartbreaker Bay's series I know and love. Both characters feel bland, even with the "promise" that they knew each other before. It lack the sizzling chemistry and crackling banters I usually addressed to Shalvis in her longer novels. The only thing that I liked enough was that Diego's brother was marrying his fiancé. That's all.

Twist of Fate by Jill Shalvis is set in her Heartbreaker Bay world, but a bit on the outside of it. As someone who has read that series from the beginning I was at a loss of who the characters were and how they connected to Heartbreaker Bay and it took be a bit to figure it out. This was a second chance romance between two people who 10 years ago were torn apart as one returned to care for his ill father and one left to attend college in New York.

Diego and Daisy had big time communication problems that began over ten years ago and lasted through most of this book. Diego not only felt like Daisy broke his heart but he’s also still very angry over the stunt his brother Rocco pulled after their father’s stroke leaving Diego holding the bag. Diego is back in San Francisco to be his brother’s best man and Daisy is the wedding planner and the two grooms have them running all over down making decisions for a wedding that is taking place later that week which neither one seemed to question, not even the wedding (event) planner??

I couldn’t quite figure out what this book wanted to be; a reunion between estranged brothers or a romance between old lovers, either way it seemed a bit rushed and true problems glossed over. While Diego and Daisy seemed to enjoy spending time together both in and out of bed, they had problems communicating and trusting each other fully.
I’m always rooting for the HEA, but I wondered frequently while reading this book if these two were meant to be, however a couple of last minute revelations (and attitude adjustments) and a grand gesture wrapped this story up in fine fashion.

Twist of Fate lacked Ms. Shalvis’ signature humor, yet gave these characters the happily ever after they’d both wanted for years.

I always enjoy reading stories by Jill Shalvis. She's one of those authors that are very easy to get into and leave you wanting more of whatever world you're in.

This story for me was rough. Not because I didn't like it but I kept going back and forth seeing each person reasoning for why they did what they did and sometimes agreeing, or times, not! It makes for a good story but at times way to emotional.

I personally liked Diego way more than I did Daisy. In fact, I only tolerated her because of how much I liked him. It doesn't happen often where I really don't care for a character but yet still enjoy the story. But for me, it does once in a while and this is one of those times.

I really understood why Diego did all he did. His actions are understandable. I thought his brother got off very easy and even though he might have felt bad for what he did it was horrible and I too would have walked away from him.

I didn't understand Daisy's issues with him. It seemed like she was blaming him for some things he couldn't control. It made it hard for me to really like her. She did do some things in the book that kept me reading so she was terrible, just not fair in her thinking. At least for me.

I tried to remember that when all this went down they were just out of high school and they needed much more time to mature and be able to see another side to a story. That finally came for both of them and that made for a happy ending.

As a whole, the story isn't bad and I like most of it. It a quick read that can really be read on its own since even though it's part of the series it's like a fourth cousin.

Twist Of Fate
Heartbreaker Bay #8.5
By: Jill Shalvis

*REVIEW* 💖💖💖.5
Twist Of Fate is a new novella addition to the Heartbreaker Bay Series. This is the story of Daisy and Diego, young love that ended in heartbreak. Years later, Daisy has a most ironic job as a wedding planner who cannot find love herself. A wedding has brought the past back into Daisy's life because Diego's brother is getting married, and Diego is back in town. They still have feelings, and it is obvious where this is going. Still, the journey has a few bumps, and these two have some wariness about opening up to love. The course of true love never did run smooth. I enjoyed reading the story of Daisy and Diego, but I wish it had been a bit longer. I did not get to know them as well as I would have liked, and the whole thing felt a little rushed;however, there are shining moments that make this novella engaging and charming and entertaining for Jill Shalvis fans to read!

Daisy used to believe in love, but that was before her childhood sweetheart pushed her away and broke her heart. Now she's an expert wedding planner for other people but has given up hope of finding her own happily ever after. Diego hasn't spoken to his brother for years but when Rocco asks him to be his best man he hopes they can patch things up. The last thing he's expecting is for the only woman he ever loved to be Rocco's wedding planner though. With two meddling grooms determined to push them together any at every opportunity Daisy and Diego can't avoid each other even if they wanted to and it quickly becomes clear that neither of them have ever moved on from their failed relationship. What remains to be seen is whether they can let go of the past to give in to the spark that still flares between them or whether they're both too damaged to believe in second chances.

I love second chance romances and I think it's one of the best tropes for a novella because you get the sense of history between the couple and it stops the story feeling like a case of insta-love. Daisy and Diego's relationship ended at a pretty awful time in Diego's life, he was dealing with a lot and he pushed Daisy away because he didn't want her feeling trapped. Daisy would have given up anything to be with him so was hurt that he held her at a distance so when she left town for college she was determined not to look back. Neither of them had really done anything wrong, it was just a case of bad timing really, so it was easy to root for them to work things out. Especially since they had such great chemistry.

Jill Shalvis always manages to write such sweet but sexy romances with great characters and Twist of Fate was no exception to that. This is part of the Heartbreaker Bay series but as I've not read any other books in that series I can confirm that it works perfectly as a stand alone. I definitely need to catch up with these books though as I'd forgotten how much I love Jill's writing style and sense of humour.

Everything Jill Shalvis writes is so enjoyable. The entire Heartbreaker Bay series is excellent.  Daisy is somewhat familiar from the series. Diego is from her past and he comes to town for his brother's wedding. Rocco, the brother, works with Sadie in the tattoo shop. The connection to the rest of the series group is quite limited in the story.

Diego and Daisy were high school sweethearts. Daisy got a chance to go to school in New York City. Diego ended up having to leave college to take care of the tattoo shop and his father, who had a stroke, when Rocco just leaves town.  Diego is left on his own with all the work and no emotional support.

Ten years later, Rocco wants Diego back and to make amends. With Daisy as the wedding planner, Diego is spending time with her again.  I thought Diego had a lot to process in less than a week to move on from the past with both Rocco and Daisy. Rocco's fiance, Tyler, is awesome. Twist of Fate has the heart, heat and humor I appreciate from this author.

Man, I absolutely love an amazing second chance romance, and that’s exactly what the latest addition to Jill Shalvis’s fantastic Heartbreaker Bay series is.

Twist of Fate stole my heart from the start and the hella awkward re-meet-cute between Daisy and Diego.

And then every awkward repeat meeting—all due to the sneaky tactics and matchmaking tendencies of Rocco and Tyler and impending nuptials. Just how were Daisy and Diego going to deny their help when the “overwhelmed” grooms needed them so?

Rocco and Tyler=masters level manipulators. And I loved every minute.

I also loved the romance between Daisy and Diego and how they never stopped loving each other, never stopped wanting each other. And it was so wonderful to see them get their happily ever after.

Twist of Fate was a terrific afternoon escape and only whetted my appetite for more in this series. ~ Missy, 4.5 stars

Twist of Fate by Jill Shalvis is a heartwarming second chance love story.
I enjoyed the writing, the storyline held my interest from start to end and I enjoyed watching Daisy and Diego get their second chance at love.
The road to their happily ever after wasn't easy, they needed to put their walls down, open themselves up to each other and truly leave the past behind.

Daisy has created a career for herself as helping others find their Happy Ever After all the while knowing that the same is not in the future for her. She fell in love once and the after effects left her devastated as he was her everything and left a huge hole in her life.

When he and Daisy were together Diego had a plan for the future however loyalty and obligations led their lives in different directions, and he did what he thought was best. Years later at the request of his brother, who he has distanced himself from because of he past, he returns to his hometown.

Daisy is the wedding planner and Diego is the brother of the groom so avoiding each other is out of the question. As they work together on the wedding the chemistry and connection between them is stronger than ever but will this be their second chance or are they destined to end in heartbreak once again?

This is a heartwarming story about love, family and second chances. Flirty banter, fun times and all the feels as we not only get to spend time with Daisy and Diego but return to Heartbreaker Bay as well.

Let's start off by saying that Ms. Shalvis is one of my favorite contemporary authors we really enjoying reading her books.

This was a cute second chance story with really great characters and I thought that Rocco and Tyler were downright hilarious.

This overall was a light enjoyable read all about second chances and starting over with the one you fell in love with all those years ago and have never forgotten.

Daisy was one of those characters who was strong and independent and loved the job she did but, clearly missing something out of life.

Diego was one of those man who carried around a lot of anger and hate and unresolved feelings as he felt both of the people who were supposed to love him betrayed him and it is something that he just never got over. The sexy and sin bad boy was about to get played ! lol

We have to say that we loved the plot as it was actually quite funny but, we just felt something was missing ,perhaps is was that wow factor for us that was missing that would have had us remembering this story for days to come. I thought that Tyler was the most interesting character of the bunch'

Jill Shalvis can write anything. That said, this wasn't my favorite of hers, but I will continue to read anything she writes. I am not a big fan of novellas as to me the story is too short and rushed. It takes no time for the couple to get to their happy ever after. This is the same in this story. After Diego and Daisy not seeing each other for ten years, they were able to overcome their misunderstanding pretty easily. I get it...it's a novella and there's not a lot of time. I did enjoy Diego and Daisy's quick story and snapshot into the Heartbreaker Bay series. (which are all great stories)

Twist of fate is a second chance romance, miscommunication trope with a gay wedding! What more could you want?

Diego and Daisy were in love once. Then Diego's dad got sick, his brother took off leaving him to deal with it, and Daisy went to college. Diego spent 2 years hating his brother and Daisy for abandoning him. Rocco, Diego brother, returned home after 2 years and Diego promptly took off, not speaking to his brother for 10 years.

I understood Diego's hatred of his brother for abandoning him. Rocco was selfish. However, the issue between him and Daisy was not as clear cut. I think both of them had some miscommunication, but I do hold Diego more responsible. However, they were both young and under a great deal of stress. Rocco and Tyler's attempts to force them back together are cute though and I appreciated that.

Overall, Twist of Fate is a fun, quick read that has delightfully fun supporting characters in Rocco and Diego, and a good second chance love story for Diego and Daisy! You don't have to have read the other Heartbreaker Bay books; however, I do recommend them!

M/F Second Chance Romance
I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

Daisy loves her job. She is good at it and while her boss is sometimes a bear to work with, Daisy knows that she can handle it. While Daisy loves her job, she isn't necessarily someone who believes in forever. Daisy's past experiences have taught her that even if she tries her best, sometimes her best isn't good enough.

Diego is a hard character to get to know. He's so closed off and he is kind of a jerk. It is hard for me to like him, and that makes me want to cheer for Daisy to find someone worthy of her. Diego has some deep issues with his brother and coming home is something he resents. But, he's being the dutiful brother and has agreed to be the best man.

While Diego is less than happy at being home, he's blindsided by seeing Daisy sitting chummy with his brother and future brother in law. Just another person who has left him in his life, Diego holds a grudge against Daisy.

With the past still eating away at both of them, they'll have to decide if their past can help direct their future. Also, with a meddling friend and brother, they'll have no choice but to face their grudges and hurt.

This is a sweet story with more funny than romance. I do wish that there had been more dialogue about their relationship. But, since this is a novella about another series that I have not read, I can understand why their past wasn't discussed more. And, while I can appreciate the second chance romance angle, this almost felt like a second chance lust-fest. I didn't really see their relationship develop that much.

3.25 stars. Twist of Fate is a novella in the Heartbreaker Bay series. Diego has returned to town for his brother's wedding as best man. His ex-girlfriend, Daisy, is the wedding planner. The two are forced to spend time together as they participate in wedding festivities. They find they still have strong feelings, but they must get over their past together and move on to have a happy future.

This book felt a little short, even for a novella (beginning at 14% and ending at 93%). I enjoyed the book, despite it's length. I just felt there was enough story to expand into a longer book. The end felt rushed. They got back together after the climax on the next to the last page with very little resolution or time together. I enjoyed the story, however. The concept and the writing were good. I liked Diego and Daisy, too. They were really sweet together with good chemistry.

Overall, this was a quick, easy, sweet and entertaining read. I enjoyed it, just not quite as much as the full length books in this series. I still love Heartbreaker Bay and look forward to more from Ms. Shalvis in the future.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is a Heartbreaker Bay novella (identified at 8.5) - you can definitely read this without knowing the rest of the series, and if I am honest, I don't think this showcases just how FABULOUS the series is. It is a sweet story, but the other books in the series are exceptional.

In the first instance our impressions of Diego are really not very good, but as we get to understand just what happened to him, the level of understanding and sympathy definitely increases. The best moment though, is when he finally realises that he did to Daisy just what happened to him, but he never saw it that way. As he grows through this, then he definitely deserves the happiness that the ever loving Daisy might still be prepared to bestow upon him.

An enjoyable read as a short story, and I am hoping that we will see them again in the next Heartbreaker Bay installment, as I think they will fit in really well.

Diego returns to San Francisco for his brother's wedding and finds out his ex-love is the wedding planner. It's a bit tense until their first kiss, and then Diego and Daisy are suddenly thinking they might pick up where they left off. They do have some past trust issues to resolve first, but it's clear that the feelings are still there.

I adored Diego's brother Rocco and his fiance Tyler. They were a sweet part of the story and I found myself wanting more of their story.

I love the Heartbreaker Bay series from Jill Shalvis, mostly because it takes place in my favorite city and the characters are engaging and interesting. While I did like Daisy and Diego and their second chance story, Twist of Fate is just too short to develop deep feelings for these characters, which is why I'm rating this 3.5 stars.

This is a great Saturday afternoon read. Diego and Daisy's story is set in the world of Heartbreaker bay. The book is a standalone, but it does give you the sense of what the series is.

Diego and Daisy's story is a intricate one, further complicated by the time Diego has been gone from Heartbreaker Bay. Daisy knows why its hard for Diego to come back home but what she doesn't expect is Diego's anger toward's her.

Diego's feelings for Daisy hasn't changed in the years he's been gone, but he knows that making a relationship work will be difficult, but he's willing to put his heart on the line.

I loved this book and can't wait for the next book in the series.

Twist of Fate is a novella that is part of the 1001Dark Nights series of standalones and is also part of Jill Shalvis' beloved Heartbreaker Series. If you haven't read any of the books from the series you still wouldn't get lost. Ms. Salvia writes really great relatable and heartwarming stories nd Twist of Fate is no exception. The protagonists are former sweethearts who ended things quite abruptly ten years ago. Now Daisy and Diego are reunited for the wedding of Diego's estranged brother. Suffice to say we got a more than satisfactory ending not only in the romantic front but also in the family aspect as well. This might be short romance but it's definitely filled with love, laughter and family.

TWIST OF FATE by Jill Shalvis is book 8.5 in the Heartbreaker Bay Series. This is the story of Daisy and Diego. I haven't yet read the previous book so for me this was a standalone book.
Also this was a second chance at love Novella Read. Diego was returning from being away which has him meeting Daisy again. Diego taught Daisy that love is a heartbreak. Both still have feelings for each other but have issues they have to work through but they are getting some help finding their way back to each other.
Enjoyed this quick read.

A second chance romance that is sweet but sexy. Daisy was Diego's first love but with a misunderstanding that ended it all. Now Diego has returned home for his brother's wedding and they can't deny the sexual chemistry that they share, but can old wounds heal.

A short read but thoroughly enjoyed. Loved the second chance reconciliation of Diego and his brother too. This is part of series but can be read as a stand alone.

Twist of Fate

Short and sweet. Even though it stated ahead of time that it was separate from the other Heartbreaker Bay stories, I think I kept looking for things and people I recognized. I didn't need them though and it was still a really sweet read.
