Sarah Mallory is the pen name for Melinda Hammond.

Born in Bristol, England, UK, she grew up telling stories. She would make up adventures to relate to her school friends during break times and lunch hours, and she was once caught scribbling a story instead of listening to the French lesson. As a punishment, her teacher made her translate the story into French! She left school at sixteen and worked in offices as varied as stockbrokers, marine engineers, insurance brokers, biscuit manufacturers and even a quarrying company.

She married at nineteen, but continued to work until the birth of her first child. It was at that time that she decided to try her hand at her first love—writing, and shortly after the birth of her daughter she had her first book, Fortune's Lady, published under the pen name of Melinda Hammond. This was quickly followed by two more historical novels, Summer Charade and Autumn Bride, but with the birth of her twin sons the demands of family life meant that writing had to take a backseat for a few years. A compulsive scribbler, she never stopped writing and continued to work on research for her novels, experimenting with contemporary scenarios as well as writing pantomimes for her children's school. In 1989 the family moved to an isolated Pennine farmhouse in West Yorkshire, not far from Brontë country, where the family expanded to include a dog, two gerbils and a dozen chickens. The growing family needed funding and she went back to work full-time. The writing had to be put on hold.

Then, in March 2000, Sarah stepped off a curb and landed in hospital with one ankle broken and one badly sprained. This laid her up on a sofa for twelve weeks and gave her the time she needed to finish a novel. She wrote as Melinda Hammond and Maid of Honour was published the same year. Since then she has never looked back. She's published more than a dozen books under this pen name and has won the Reviewers' Choice Award in 2005 from Singletitles.com for Dance for a Diamond. Her novel Gentlemen in Question was a Historical Novel Society Editors' Choice Title in November 2006. In 2012 her novel The Dangerous Lord Darrington won the Love Story of the Year by the Romantic Novelists' Association. She is now concentrating on writing romantic historical adventures for Mills & Boon.

My goodness, this book! The minute I met Nancy in the previous books, I knew she must have a story, there was something intriguing about her, there was a hint of mystery and like a lot of fellow readers, I needed to know her past and to see where her future lay. So, you wouldn’t believe how happy I was when I heard that she was having a story of her own, even though it seems an age since we last delved into this glorious series – or maybe that’s just me, I am very impatient after all. I can happily say that it was well worth the tortuous wait for her HEA, as this is a doozy.

This is book three in the ‘Saved From Disgrace’ series, this can be very easily be read as a stand-a-lone, even though Nancy is from the previous books all you need to know about her part and her history is here for you, but I would highly recommend checking out the others in the series, only because they are just too good not to miss.

This could be my favourite in all of the series, in fact not could be, it definitely is – which seems a bit disloyal to the previous, I’m sure I said the same about those – I love it, the story is ….well, it is beyond my capacity to describe just how good this is, I could say devastating, gorgeous, engaging, thrilling, sizzling chemistry, lies, secrets with a dash of mystery – and that is is just the hero….. oh, do not get me started on the hero.

Oh, my word Gabriel, serious sighing is going on here, he is wonderful, Sarah Mallory, what have you done to me? I am a swooning mess after meeting this gorgeous, grumbling, mysterious man with the playful, twinkling eyes. I may be ruined for other heroes for life. Ah, Gabriel, I need more heroes like this in my life…hint, hint, if anyone is reading this!

Well, I best get on with this review, it’s no good me whittling on about a great chest and fine pair of take me to bed eyes, you want to know a wee bit about this book….or maybe I could get away with just babbling on about Gabriel’s….unmentionables 😉

The story opens with Nancy on her way back from London, home to Prospect House where as you will know if you have followed the series is a home for women who are in need. Our Nancy is far more then just a great cook and housekeeper, she is far more then what she appears. Which is why I wanted to know her story, she is a fascinating woman. The snow is falling heavily when their party briefly stop at an inn that Nancy comes across a man left for dead in the road – as you do. Even though it is going against her better judgement, after all he could be anyone – he could be a bandit, pirate, rogue who knows….and especially as she is precariously close to the very person she has been running away from all these years, Nancy is a good woman and can’t leave the poor man to die so she bustles him into her carriage, even though he could be a pirate, he definitely has the manners for one.

I really, really like Nancy, she is a real bright spark, I always knew that she had a smart head on her shoulders and that she had a real, genuine caring nature and this book has just enforced what I had already thought of her. She has her own secrets , I love that she is very independent she is proud of the life she has found, even though she tries to act all proper even she can’t resist Gabriel when he is tantalising her…well, she is only human how can she not fall under his spell?

So decamping at his home, to a bemused valet, she starts to nurse the mystery man back to health, which is very funny seeing her take over his house hold as though it were her own. Let us just say once he has woken and regained enough of himself he isn’t too happy about the fact that he is now under the wing of an interfering woman who just so happens to have a great bust beneath her prim widows weeds.

Gabriel is like a lion with a thorn in his paw, he is grouchy, brooding, grumbling but he has been attacked and left for dead and is woken to a busy bee of a women stamping around his house, it’s understandable that he’s a little put out and he wants her gone as soon as possible. But, Gabriel has a secret, a huge reason why he doesn’t want an enchanting woman around the house taking up all is attention. Gabriel’s secret and why he was attacked is a major part of the plot, so I ain’t going to go too deep into that, I wouldn’t want to spoil it for you, let us just say that there is far more to Gabriel then a fine pair of twinkling, cheeky and sexy eyes.

This is just marvellous, the chemistry between Gabriel and Nancy is on fire, from the moment he wakes you can feel the heat coming of the page whenever he looks at her, honestly it’s scorching. There is a real buzz between them, the banter is funny, sexy and real, even the more serious moments is enthused with an underlying ‘take me to bed’ atmosphere. The writing is brilliantly engaging, it takes the reader on a real journey and not just straight to bed. Honestly, this book is gorgeous, from the cover to the words within, I cannot recommend this enough, but I do need more from this series, please! Sarah Mallory, you cannot leave me hanging, I need more of Gabriel and Nancy. 🙂 These two are definitely a new favourite couple, they are just perfect!

Definitely not the books for me.

I am glad to see the author moved somewhat away from the "abusive past" plot and I was happy to see Nancy's and Gabriel's love affair beign less tragic and difficult to navigate. They were just two people attracted to each other. It proved to be a lighthearted, fun read; after the previous books had not been.

But, there was a "mystery" incorporated to the story that was frankly ridiculous, that unfortunately occupied a big chunk of the middle of the book. It was boring, easily guessed and anti clamatic. It took away much from the merry tone of the actual relationship developing between Nancy and Gabriel.

On another note, HistRom is really not my thing. I find them mostly tedious and cheesy.

I'm glad to be done with these books.

This book's biggest sin is that it's immensely boring. It starts off with a bang - Nancy finds a man freezing to death and after nursing him back to health, finds out she saved him from a murder attempt. This section is exciting, and the characters have good chemistry. The story capitalizes on this by...

Nancy and Gabriel dining together every night and having nice chats with some sexual tension.

I mean... I love good chats and food as much as anyone, but there was no conflict. The two characters both have secrets, but the reader doesn't know what they are, and it makes the characters inaccessible and flat.

The characters finally disclose Important Information to each other at 40%, but to be honest, I couldn't make myself care. DNF.

Laura has gone off on a Tangent again (the capital T is deliberate, btw *winks*). (Also, I can confirm that I am indeed talking about myself in the third person *snorts*) Tangent, you say? *nods* Yup, I am like a 🐷 in 💩 at the moment with all things historical romance.

*sigh*

Sarah Mallory is a new-to-me author, and although THH is Book 3 in the Saved from Disgrace series, it can easily be read as a standalone. I am proof of that!

This story had it all for me: heart-stopping romance coupled with heart-pounding suspense. All in all, it’s a wonder I don’t have a dicky ticker after all that! I admit I’m bit of a sap, and if anyone deserved a bit of *coughs* happiness it was Nancy. Plus, let’s get real, who wouldn’t want a taste of Gabriel?

“Thank you. I am considered very good with my hands.”

*shrugs*

See?

I rest my case.

I loved Nancy – she is willing to put everything on the line, return to the lion’s den even, in order to uncover the truth and aide the man she loves. Although, heaven forbid anyone should discover the depth of her feelings including the man himself. Decisions made years ago have determined her lot in life, or have they?

Gabriel’s life is filled with intrigue and danger. For King and Country, he will do what he must in order to protect the Crown. A confirmed bachelor, he seeks pleasure whenever he has a mind to, but the arrival of Nancy in his life ignites a need he never envisaged.

Sorry!

*blows out breath*

Can we just take a moment to appreciate that?

*sigh*

I was so engrossed in the story at one point that I gave my mum the fright of her life, lol. The suspense was building and building, I was right there *points* in the midst of the action, the tension was getting to me and I cracked, shouting out, “You have got to be ‘bleeping’ kidding me!” Poor woman nearly flew off the sofa. *blushes*

Minimal plot. Minimal character development. Minimal everything.

It’s a book designed for quick reading and you don’t need to think too much about it.

Neither here nor there for me, but easier to get through this kind of book when busy at work.

Nancy is travelling home, with her companion, when she comes across a man who has been gravely injured. Nancy's kind hearted nature is such that she cannot leave the man to fend for himself, however, making sure that Gabriel Shaw survives, not only puts Nancy in considerable danger, but also her contact with this very handsome stranger will open up the secrets of Nancy's past which she has successfully kept hidden for twelve years.

There's no doubt that Nancy is a fascinating enigma, she has an air of delicious mystery around her, and yet, as her connection to Gabriel shows, she has a passionate nature and a real zest for life. However, circumstances have made Nancy wary and rather cautious which makes her attraction to Gabriel all the more captivating. Gabriel is every bit as charming and dangerously addictive as all of this author's fine literary heroes. He is gloriously handsome and the powerful sexual attraction between Nancy and Gabriel sizzles right from the start which very quickly make this into a sparkling, and very passionate, romance.

The Highborn Housekeeper has all the trademarks of just what we have come to expect from this series. There is a large amount of danger and intrigue, especially when Nancy and Gabriel become involved in a secret investigation, but there's also a sizzling amount of passion which smoulders between the couple and which tests their burgeoning relationship to the absolute limits.

Those who have read books one and two in the Saved from Disgrace series will already be familiar with Nancy's story, indeed, she and her companion, Mrs Yelland, were active participants in Beauty and the Brooding Lord, and so, this story takes us very nicely into what happened next for them.

Of course, as with all the stories in this series, The Highborn Housekeeper is perfectly capable of standing on its own merits and is a complete story in itself but, as with all series and for greater enjoyment, it's best to invest in this series right from the beginning, and let these wonderful historical romances take you back to Regency England.

This is the first book that I have read by Sarah Mallory and to be honest I am completely kicking myself that I haven’t picked up her books before! Even though The Highborn Housekeeper is part of a series I had no problems at all so I would easily class it as a standalone.

In this story we meet Nancy who after running away from a forced marriage has spent the years since working as a cook and housekeeper. What I loved about Nancy is that she was so happy and lighthearted even though her life hasn’t been the easiest. It was extremely easy to like her and then when she meets Gabriel well let’s just say that sparks fly! Gabriel has a few secrets which are revealed along the way and I have to say I loved their first meeting it left Nancy with plenty of questions ones that she was determined were going to be answered. As they spend more time together you see a more relaxed and less brooding hero although to be fair I am partial to a brooding hero 😉 This also goes to show how this pair really do bring out the best in each other.

The plot moves at a lovely pace and easily kept me connected to both the characters and the story. I loved seeing Nancy and Gabriel interact and slowly but surely form a friendship along with a sizzling chemistry that was so fun to see play out. In The Highborn Housekeeper there is a mystery, secrets and a dash of danger to make things even more entertaining. The romance is completely sigh worthy and left me with a smile as I turned the final page!

(paperback) So typical of me to find this series and then read number one three FIRST. Not that it made any difference because it can be read as a stand alone. Which means is, now I have closed the book with a satisfied sigh, I can go on to read books one and two in the near future. So what did I think of it? Nancy is a spirited heroine in the Georgette Heyer mould and then some. She has to be as modern a miss as is possible, given the period she is living in, in order to provide the perfect foil for gorgeous Gabriel, who (sometimes) is more Demon than Angel. Their verbal sparring keep the pages turning and in some places, asbestos gloves are recommended as she proves his match in and out of the bedroom. But there's more (which came as a surprise to me). There are secrets and government plots which take the book in a whole different direction. A couple of times I had to read a passage to make sure that I hadn't misunderstood what was happening, plot wise. So many twists and turns, revelations and 'blimey' moments that I was hooked from start to finish. My first Sarah Mallory but certainly not my last. Beautiful written, intelligent use of language and well researched . Now all I have to decide is whether I read the other two books in reverse order, too. Decisions, decisions . . .

3.5 stars: Regency romance: low spice. Story of Nancy and Gabriel and her mean, nasty father and his soon-to-be new wife. This is a romance of convenience that turned into the real thing …all while they try to retrieve stolen government papers and thwart efforts to send Nancy to an asylum so her father can get her inheritance. I just so wanted that horrible father and wicked fiancé to get their just dues! Ha! Entertaining enough but could’ve been more exciting. I’d try another book by this author.

Nancy is an independant older heroine, which I liked who rescues the hero, Gabriel, nurses him to good health and then helps him solve a mystery about missing government papers.

There is a sexual relationship but I think this book would really be viewed as a fairly clean read. I usually like more but I didn't miss it with this story.

A great read. I might chase up the other in this series.

I liked the characters and the storyline, which involves espionage and the tiny humptydumpty country I am from. However, the tension was lacking in some moments in the story. It started exciting, then murmured, became exciting for a brief moment and murmured again.
