Dozy Bear and the Secret of Sleep is the perfect bedtime book for toddlers and children. As an adult, I even enjoyed it. What makes the book so neat are the vivid colorful illustrations against the darkness of night. The animal descriptions and story literally put you to sleep. This is one of my favorite children's bedtime books this year.
While Katie Blackburn's idea is interesting, I'm not sure it will work for little listeners. She introduces several sleep inducing techniques through the story frame of a young bear trying to fall asleep. Dozy gets advice from both parents and grandparents about how to fall asleep. Much of the text is lyrical and rhythmic which fits the goal of the tale, but the addition of the mixed media illustrations doesn't enhance the text. I recommend this only as an additional purchase for public libraries that need more bedtime stories for young children.
Miss 3 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
This was a sleep themed picture book that I chose. I understand what the author is trying to achieve but I found this book so incredibly boring to read, I wish it came with a CD! Miss 3 asked to have it read again so I guess it kind of worked for her although it certainly didn't put her to sleep.
This is a great book for helping children fall asleep if they toss and turn a lot when they lay down at night. Although the drawings are weird (a face is just drawn on the bear instead of it having a snout), the message is fantastic. The mother bear in the story talks her bear through tensing and relaxing his muscles to go to sleep and taking calming breaths to calm his body down in preparation for sleep.
So, I was looking for a book for pajama storytime and this one was perfect. Kids and adults alike will understand Dozy Bear's problems with going to sleep. There is so much to think about! But his mom and dad give him some advice that's sure to work for a lot of little bears - and their parents.
Enough 'action' words and movement narrative to use as an action book for Storytime readings. Book is perfect for themes on nighttime, bedtime or sleep.
Dozy wants to go to sleep like all the other animals, but he doesn't know how. Mama and Papa give him sleeping tips, Nana and Grampy teach him some sleep secrets. Soon Dozy is asleep too.
Dozy Bear couldn't fall asleep until he learned the secret of sleep. This is a clever way to help children learn that secret, too, and to calm themselves into sleep. Nicely illustrations.

With each review, I provide Content Considerations, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

The illustrations are soft and quiet, but I really don't see small children sitting through this book about sleep. While his parents give him good sound advice on how to fall asleep, the story is just a bit longer than what I like to read to younger children at bedtime. I might try this book with early elementary aged children who have a little better attention span than those of a younger age.
I liked this book for incorporating movement before bed, vocabulary, and having illustrations that helped tell the story. Dozy Bear was relaxing, wiggling, and getting settled. Vocabulary examples are "snuggle down", "sink into the bed", "body feels settled", and my favorite- "...put his little paw into the cool spot under the pillow..." As a child, I would go to my pillow to see if that were true. A fresh bedtime book or story to act out during a story time.
Summary Katie Blackburn's Dozy Bear and the Secret of Sleep is an innovative, beautiful, and rhythmic picture book about a little bear named Dozy who wanted to sleep but didn't know how...Combining proven sleep and relaxation techniques with Richard Smythe's gorgeous, dreamlike illustrations, this is the perfect companion for any parent who wants to turn naptime or bedtime into a calming experience.
