Gamma Flight was too late. Shadow Base is infiltrated. Crusher Creel is damned. And the One Below All walks upon Earth. Now, in the place he was born, the Immortal Hulk is the last thing standing between the world of the living…and the GREEN DOOR.
I first get into this new Hulk series because of the psychology of it all. We are far away from that now and I don't think we'll ever going back. Too bad... The story is still good enough, but we're now in a very action based comic, which is way less original then what it started from!
As surprising as it is Macabre. This feels like the natural progression for the spirit of things like the Universal monsters or B movies on the 50's. Going full circle from radioactive mutations into Gothic doom. This is a dark and engaging story that is sometimes a little heavy handed in how and why certain personalities and certain objects even are (what is the significance of David Banner? Why a Green Door? What is this building towards? A moving epiphany or another reason to punch monsters in the face). The ride is too fun for me to really care. As far as "it's about the journey not the destination" narratives go, I'll take it. As it stands I devoured these last 5 issues like they were the first and last stories I ever knew. Not much really got answered but I'm just as excited. How rare is that?
Immortal Hulk has been consistently impressing me with every issue it comes out with. The series started out with this wonderful horror tone that fit so perfectly with the Hulk…and now it’s progressed into something evens stranger. It still carries that tone of horror, but it’s changed in subtle ways. I think part of that is because we’re getting a better understanding of what has actually been happening (well, sort of). This series ties in very heavily with what happened in the last issue, so you don’t want to skip issue 9 here. Crusher Creel was an interesting pull for this plot. Last issue when they first introduced him I kind of rolled my eyes, but that quickly changed when I saw what they were up to. Now I’m just horrified and dare I say that I feel bad for the guy?
The horror of the Hulk just keeps getting darker and darker. The art is superb in this issue. From the action sequences to the color, this issue was outstanding.
The Hulk fights a distorted version of Creel while Gamma Flight and General Fortean watch from a distance waiting for their turn. Then the Hulk realises that something bigger us behind everything... The story takes a turn to the supernatural with this issue.
Alpha Flight now has a little brother. Welcome to Gamma Flight, dedicated to tracking/stopping the Hulk. Warning: this issue is INSANE and ends on a giant CLIFFHANGER!
Immortal Hulk #10 – “The Green Door” Bruce, Hulk, and Sasquatch are all connected by the Green Door, which leads to a realm of gamma-powered hell. The issue is a trippy, metaphysical journey into trauma, death, and what lies beyond. Hulk confronts spiritual evil, and Banner relives the abuse from his father. The Green Door mythos turns Hulk’s powers into something cursed and biblical.
